@Aiden Macleod Casuals are those who don't/won't have the time to immerse themselves in the game world. That's why you'll find many of them renting per hour at internet cafes and playing on the go on mobile instead. And no, especially these days, cut scenes are actual scenes with voice and acting. Even back in the days of the first PlayStation when voices were limited and one has to rely on texts, there were still cutscenes. And story bits using the game engine still had animations, and the context were still presented.
Just finished playing this, my first Yakuza game. Story, voice acting and OST were incredible, was completely blown away. The combat is as complex as you want it to be, there are a tonne of abilities and stylish techniques to learn that make you feel like a total beast, whereas if you want to just mash square like an utter dingus, you're free to do that too.
The ceiling for the combat is so high. I saw uploads here on RUclips of dudes chaining combos where they’re switching styles mid combo. I still can’t get the timing.
"It's basic it's very simple" "While it feels very button mash-y" Compared to GTA 5, where they all have the same moves, no combos and you just press one button, it's pretty complex.

the all mighty and powerful ass ketchup no it's ok not trash but also not the best they just made a fail with the things you could do in the game (Features) but for the rest the story is great and long and it's not that dumb story like Yakuza 0
I don't understand why people skip cutscenes, and they skip them end through the first play through because they just want to beat shit up or they just want to get to the action parts, even if they are thrown into a place where they don't understand how they got to because they skipped the cutscene.
Omar Miralles tbh i find gta has nice stories and characters, really fun moments if you pass de bs of "beating shit, stealing cars and nothing else", but i agree yakuza series has a fucking great and appealing story, its basically stupid skip the scenes in this game cause has great moments
@@diegosotomiranda4107 I see your point on that. I feel like the review didn't do the game justice saying that *it's a game that a lot of people would probably hate on* I think it's because of Sonic and not taking the game seriously that makes them put out that kind of review. For me, this game is my favorite because it balances the gameplay and story, great characters and excellent world building. The only flaws are the Cat Fight minigame and the battle system is a bit overpowered, but nothing major. I recommend for the people who can't buy the game to watch NicoB's lets play since the guy is new too, he also makes excellent voices and pretty enthusiastic so if you like those kind of RUclipsrs you'll like him. Overall, this game is great and under rated. Everyone should try this game out.
A bit late to the game here. Ive just started Yakuza 0 and I love it. Its definetly different and full of WTF moments. Looking forward to going through the series. (im a 61 year old gamer btw)
The voice acting is incredible! Reminds of the Witcher 3 and TLOU with their amazing lip syncing, Story so far is great even though the beginning is mehh, but it picks up and gets so good(currently 10 hours in) it's worth the buy people! Oh and there's some really badass sequences, one of them you can watch in Angryjoe's review that just leaves you in awe lol.
Rehanlbp We'd I like it, reminds me of the 90's japanese beatemups with a touch of modern, and feels great, Kiryu has Brawler (a balanced style similar to the one he's used in the previous entries), Beast (a powerful but slow style that allows him to use heavy weapons), and Rush (a fast boxing style that emphasizes mobility) while Majima has Thug (a balanced style), Slugger (a weapons-oriented style with liberal use of a baseball bat), and Breaker (a tricky style utilizing dance moves).
Special K Console exclusivity sucks, So I understand, and this is also exactly why I bought a PS4 pro, So I can play exclusives games a lot of which are Japanese games, I even have a japanese account primarily for regionlocked ones, PC for everything else, lol.
Special K For one game? No, However, If you plan to buy Bloodborne(favorite game in the system) Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank and other Sony exclusives then absolutely yes.
This video needs to be remade by someone who isn't bland. "There's not much combat"? Dude, 8 different playstyles, over a hundred different unlockable moves, countless heat actions and insane number of abilities. If that is "not much combat", then I have nothing to say to you. I love most of your videos but this one is a no-no.
Vergil furthermore, you get attacked every ten seconds when in freeroam and most missions contain combat in some regard. The longest I ever went without getting in a fight in freeroam was a 75% lap around Kamurochu.
People tend to forget this game was released in Japan in March 2015 on both PS3 and PS4. Graphics has always been the issue; yet the westernization of this game was almost 2 years later. The game is an awesome game, if you wanna see it's real potential, look at part 6.
Never played any of the Yakuza games before, but I am absolutely loving my time with this game. Just started chapter 7 and the story is really, really compelling. It's just a little jarring having 4 different styles of cutscenes, but that's a minor gripe. All around it's just a really fun game with tons to do outside the main story from darts to bowling to pool to karaoke to disco dancing to watching softcore erotic videos to betting on catfights; and that's only some of the things you can do. This game has it all and it shows that Sega is still quite capable of making fun, compelling games.

venky mk exactly, it's not exactly wise because games have such a huge spectrum of variety, some are more gameplay, some are more story, but they all usually have some balance of both, even board games have stories sometimes.
People should mention that it runs at a rock solid butter-smooth 60 frames per second. Don't be surprised it doesn't look THAT next gen. It was a PS3 game to begin with.
gameranx looks cool but I hate reading subtitles. I look away for a sneeze or a drink of water and I lose what they said. Other than that it looks interesting
I gotta say- I've been an Yakuza fan for a very long time:. The positive press this game is getting is kinda surreal. It's like finally people are "getting it." For years now fans outside Japan has had to deal with a torrent of frustration getting these games. Yakuza 5's skeleton localization and download only release will always confuse the hell out of me, especially when other companies are able to release and localize on a regular basis even obscurer things from Japan. To give some perspective: The first two games were given HD rereleases on PS3 in Japan, both have already been localized in English for PS2, but we couldn't even get those to come over. Not even downloadable. Why? It's easy to say "Because Sega", but clearly there are other factors at play(?) Regardless, as a long-time fan I can say this is a great place to jump into the series. The fact that the remake of the first one is still on track to get an actual boxed release, I mean- this is a great opportunity if you've been holding back to jump in. It's different, it's fun, and I hope Sega actually thinks about PS4 rereleases of previous entries for new fans jumping into this one.
Nick Blomgren I'm a new fan for 3 months and I love it, the reason that the series is underrated is because they think of it as Japanese GTA. I thought of that too until I just decided to binge watch on a let's play with a RUclipsr (Nico B) and I fell in love with it, I would love to say that right now I'm super excited to see Yakuza Kiwami 2 and looking forward to the remake of Yakuza 3 to 5 :3
Nick Blomgren one of the most weird, unique and fucking fun game ive ever played, and its great to see the remakes are coming and the hype for this great story, kazuma kyriu its one badass mofo who needs more love for the "gamers"
The game is a game for the ages. When I spend money I want a game with a good story and not a game I'm going to beat in a one day sit down. You definitely get your money's worth out of the yakuza games. I honestly think they are better than gta but that's my opinion and everyone has their own opinion. But its good to have people like us who support the games that way they give us more of them.
I've been playing video games since before kids that are gonna hate on this were even born, and I can honestly say the Yakuza series is my favorite series of all time.
Hugely story-driven, well-developed characters, hilarious dialogue, satisfying combat. Wise to start on Yakuza 0 if you want to start on the series. One of the best games i played.
Story first gameplay second? Might be because I'm a huge Yakuza fan but seriously the balance of gameplay and story in Yakuza is top notch and I'm even a fan of Metal Gear and its ridiculous cut scenes that can sometimes get in the way.
the game is a straight up masterpiece . Doesn' have a down time and keeps you interested the entire time with get substories to create a deeper bonding with the protagonists and the surrounding characters.
I've heard of these games before but never interested me, now that I know it's heavy on story, it sounds like a game for me, I love the Metal Gear Solid series and my favorite part were the cut scenes.
Yakuza is one of the best games I have ever played. Story is interesting, kind of unique. Combat is easy to start but extremely hard to master. Graphics are good for game released in 2015(if I remember correctly). Good optimization. good port for pc. Anyway, how can anyone say it is bad game? It is good, better than most. Well.. if COD games are good for you(good graphics and everything else is bad) then I can guess how you all come to this conclusion..
NAL Do tell?...I want to see if this is worth buying I Love Dynamic combat can you dodge or counter?...After watching this review and seeing you have to run around a dude to punch him before he punches you I dont like that.
yea you can dodge you can lock on to a target you can counter attack and also you can use awesome heat actions (google it if you interested) this game has one of the most complex and complicated fighting mechanics in a whole beat em up genre
4 different fighting styles, each with their own huge RPG Skill Trees, thousands of weapons to either buy, win or craft, tons of secret techniques to unlock, a secret 5th fighting style, every button does something (dodge, taunt, lock-on, punch, heavy punch, kick, throw/grab etc). Taunting is for intimidating/scaring opponents or angering them (changing their aura color and behavior) and increasing your Heat-gauge which is your super meter basically and unlocks devastating and awesome finishers like dragging a guy to a car door and bashing their head in or doing a Jojo/Kenshiro -style "ORAORAORAORAORA" attack. It's so fucking bizarre how many reviewers claim it's not deep when on screen all you see is said reviewer lazily mashing the kick button over and over, NOT even trying lmao. Also, keep in mind there's 2 characters so everything I listed doubles because both characters are very different in playstyle. The other one (Majima) has an awesome weapons-based extra fighting style that has unique moves for each of the gazillion weapons not available in other styles etc. The game's fighting system is so complex and in-depth you can't unlock even half of it on the first playthrough. So they designed it in a way where it's rewarding to start New Game Plus or just freeroam after the main story campaign is done.
@Aiden Macleod sleeping dogs combat: light and heavy attack, right click to counter. easiest shit i've ever played. yes i did play the game 3 times on hard + all the DLC yakuza 0 combat has actual depth and requires more than an IQ of 60 (the ability to right click when an enemy glows red in sleeping dogs to counter is really all you need) for you to pummel enemies without taking a beating. and sleeping dogs' upgrades are extremely straightforward, simply expansions of combos (omg now you can do 5 light hits and end off with ANOTHEr heavy attack omfg!). i really don't know how a sane person could say sleeping dogs' combat requires anything but an attention span and the right click button and i don't know what you're going on about with sleeping dog's "interactive story", not to mention no one even fucking mentioned anything about story because the conversation's about combat. wtf buddy
@@hitoshura7 people often use that term to indicate that the game is unpopular... But actually it means it is more better than it was claimed to be.... This video really undersells how good the mini games/side quests are, imo they are the main appeal of this game. Also, no mention of the businesses, which this game does better that just about any other game. I guess in a game like Yakuza, where it opens up slowly and you don't unlock major features till later on in the game, a lot of stuff will be left out of reviews. You can't expect reviewers to put in over 20 hours before writing a review (gotta get those day one clicks). But if you're still on the fence about this game, go listen to someone that's completed the game talk about it.
I actually really liked this game 1.Amazing plot 2.All those side mini games and side quests 3.The combat was kinda laggy but it isn't so repetitive. I would give this game a 9/10.
This is one of the most surprising games ive ever played. Starting with this, being my first ever yakuza game, i have experienced something ive not found in other video games. Yakuza has sooo much variety, insanely good acting, and one of my favorite stories in gaming. This game is almost as good as The Witcher. Lots of attention to detail, and tons of extra content. Cheers to my xbox brothers who are just now experiencing it for themselves too.
Man, yakuza 1 & 2 are The most amazing games in PS2, so much things to do, a game with a perfect story full of twists and sad moments, good gameplay... Simply a game full of fun, I've completed the game 100% 2 times, and I just can't get enough
Never heard of this series until I played Yakuza 5. Then I ended up watching the live action movie. Now, I'm waiting for Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza 2 Remake.
Why do a lot of people complain about the graphics. I’m a gamer and I’ll play anything and everything just to appreciate all the hard work they the developers have poured in the game.
I have never played a single yakuza game but I want to get a PS4 just for this, the upcoming remake of the first Yakuza game and Yakuza 6. That's just how cool this game looks in reviews! I saw an hour of gameplay too and got hooked on the story! I've never even played a JRPG or anything either so I know, it's kind of weird lol.
did you play shenmue? it is exactly like this. Its an awesome vibe that you get. The only real downside about the game is that there is no English Dubbing which is annoying, but after a while you get in sync between listening to the Japanese dialogue and reading the English subtitles and after a while you wont even recognize that you are reading and it will feel like you understand Japanese because playing a lot of this will get you in sync between the subtitles and the Japanese voice acting. Most young People on here dont know what Shenmue is and end up making dumb comparisons between yakuza and sleeping dogs or GTA lol, the game is nothing like these games and it is not really an open world, nor can you drive.
TheEgyptianOne I am aware of Shenmue but I've never actually played it. I am aware that there's no driving and it's not a totally open world. I've watched several reviews and an hour of gameplay and I feel like I would love these games. The story looks great and the mini games look hilarious! I will get a PS4 to play these games at some point. Obviously with a bunch of other exclusives too though like ratchet and clank, the last of us games and the uncharted series for starters.
@@TheEgyptianOne i wouldnt really consider the yakuza series and the shenmue series alike at all, sure they're both jrpgs and have minigames i guess, but that's where the similarities end
I've been in love with this series since Yakuza 3, and as a veteran, Yakuza 0 IS actually a great place to start. If you have interest in playing other games in the series, I recommend getting Yakuza 4 or 5, they are both amazing.
I love this game! The story really seems to pull the player in, while the combat and mini games are actually quite "charming" fun. I guess you can say...
Really incomplete review , didn't show any heat moves neither the minigames, karaoke, disco dancing, underground catfights, perv videos...damn you miss A LOT of stuff dude. Also no fighting? lmao
You can literally feel more aggressive the more you play the games, lmao. I was once angry in real life, and turned on yakuza instead of fucking my wall up. Worked wonders.
I've spent about 70 hours with this game I'm about half way through the story it's the first yakuza game I've played I'm lovin every minute playing this game there's so much content in this game I wish more game developers made games like this.
Long-time fan of Yakuza games here, and I agree with most of your points except the one about there not being lots of combat. Yes, there's many segments in the game with no story-related fights, but even while you're just walking around town doing side-missions or moving from one objective to another, you'll come across plenty of random encounters, unless you knowingly avoid them, or run away from enemies. The chapters also usually end with huge action scenes, so you won't be beating the game by ignoring the combat. People have said that the system isn't as fluid as something like Batman or Assassin's Creed games, but Yakuza never aimed for something like that, it has very arcade-like fighting system, and feels like a game, like you said.
I've always gotten bored with the combat in Batman and Assassin's Creed.. just hit the attack button then counter when an enemy has an icon over their head. I've never been bored from Yakuza's combat. I spent a few hours just beating up thugs in the recent Yakuza 6 demo.
I love the Yakuza series. I've been playing it since the original on PlayStation 2. I'm still stuck in Yakuza 4 and began playing Yakuza 5 a few months ago because it was available free with PlayStation Plus in August last year. In Japan this series is much more popular. Yakuza 0 was released on both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 over there. I don't really blame Sega for not releasing the PlayStation 3 version in the west. The graphics look great and I look forward to getting it after I complete the other Yakuza games in my collection. Fun fact Yakuza 6 is already coming out in Japan in a few months while we're just getting Yakuza 0!
I can't believe I waited this long before jumping the gun, but I am *so* glad I did (also convinced my bestie to give the series a shot by putting the emphasis on the story telling that is absolutely brilliant IMO--that's what sold me). I wish I'd known earlier about this series, but at the same time, I currently have access to all the game in the series in remastered and/or next gen quality, *in actual chronological order*, was able to snag physical copies of everything (for cheap) *and* they keep making more of them. Honestly, as long as the writing will be top notch I'll keep buying/playing.
I've never played a Yakuza game before. Just picked this up and holy cow where has this series been my whole life?! This game is nothing short of amazing. Phenomenal characters, story, acting, action, and progression. The graphics can get weird at times but the game is awesome! Oh and I HATE JRPGs. This is NOTHING like a JRPG to me. No turn based combat. No weird and over the top story lines. No overly quirky weird eccentric characters (granted I'm only a couple hours in). This game is great partly because to me this is nothing like a JRPG.
It's funny how some people don't want to try out the series due to the lack of English voices smh. Reading subtitles and hearing different language is not that bad, western fans.
I just copped this and I’m in the first few hrs and it’s def much more movie cutscenes than fighting so far. It’s basically like watching a very long movie with fight segments in between them up to this point

A game that constantly makes me check and think "am I still playing the same game?" The combat system gets increasingly more fun as you continue playing, the sound engineering for the entire game is wonderful and makes the atmosphere of Sotenbori and Kamurocho deeply convincing. 2nd best storyline of the series just behind 5 IMO. While I completely understand when you say a game is 'very Japanese'. Is that really the attitude we should have towards Japanese games as Western audience? What do you think a game reviewer from Japan would say about American games? It's 'very very American'? I feel like the reason the minority of people you point out who doesn't even try out a game like this is because their ethnocentric perspective categorizes these kind of games as a niche market, when it shouldn't be.

I agree, I feel like he didn't credit how deep the combat can be enough.
The ceiling for the combat is so high. I saw uploads here on RUclips of dudes chaining combos where they’re switching styles mid combo. I still can’t get the timing.
"It's basic it's very simple"
"While it feels very button mash-y"
Compared to GTA 5, where they all have the same moves, no combos and you just press one button, it's pretty complex.
Yeah but in GTA V the main focus is on weapons and vehicles where as Yakuza is basically just hand to hand

@@diegosotomiranda4107 I see your point on that.
Special K Console exclusivity sucks, So I understand, and this is also exactly why I bought a PS4 pro, So I can play exclusives games a lot of which are Japanese games, I even have a japanese account primarily for regionlocked ones, PC for everything else, lol.

did you like the 6th part ?
Never played any of the Yakuza games before, but I am absolutely loving my time with this game. Just started chapter 7 and the story is really, really compelling. It's just a little jarring having 4 different styles of cutscenes, but that's a minor gripe. All around it's just a really fun game with tons to do outside the main story from darts to bowling to pool to karaoke to disco dancing to watching softcore erotic videos to betting on catfights; and that's only some of the things you can do. This game has it all and it shows that Sega is still quite capable of making fun, compelling games.

Simple combat...what gameranx fails to tell you that is how deep the fighting system is...that's why I hate watching gameranx videos
@Aiden Macleod sleeping dogs combat: light and heavy attack, right click to counter. easiest shit i've ever played. yes i did play the game 3 times on hard + all the DLC
yakuza 0 combat has actual depth and requires more than an IQ of 60 (the ability to right click when an enemy glows red in sleeping dogs to counter is really all you need) for you to pummel enemies without taking a beating. and sleeping dogs' upgrades are extremely straightforward, simply expansions of combos (omg now you can do 5 light hits and end off with ANOTHEr heavy attack omfg!).
i really don't know how a sane person could say sleeping dogs' combat requires anything but an attention span and the right click button

Trust me, this is one the greatest game I ever played. It’s up there with persona 5 for me
So you're telling me it's like GTA, Saints Row, and Shenmue had a 3 way
I love the Yakuza series.

Every game in every other genre aren’t JRPG’s…who would have known?
It took me 100 hours to beat the whole game and it was worth it

hey! hey! hey!
Has me deeply excited for the remake and 6 releases in the West.
i've seen and heard of this series before but...still....the graphics and areas you visit are beautiful....
nice review
if your still debating on this game I'd suggest angry Joe's review he gives a longer and in depth review for anyone still debating
Brandon Molina Indeed
Worth it just for the other Joe dancing.....
Angry Joe has saved me some money with his reviews lol Yakuza is fantastic though, BUY IT
I’ve now played the first 5 chapters of Yakuza Kiwami. It’s my first game in the series that I’ve ever played, and I’m absolutely loving everything about it. Can’t wait to get Yakuza 0 when I finish Kiwami, and can’t wait to see what else the series has to offer :D
Same. It’s a breath of fresh air compared to other games I’ve played (cough FF15). It’s almost like the Durarara video game I’ve always wanted.
Bought it 2 days ago, no regrets so far! (So basically this is an "after you buy" video for me)
Can't wait to get home and play some more :-)
Should've known Japanese games are my kinda games, but I am relatively new to this (game)genre...
"there's not much combat"
what
every corner there's some mf waiting to beat me up
Go buy Yakuza 0. The best story line I have seen in years. The ending is so emotional and ardent
playing on pc in 2022, the story is really fun and the graphics looks much better than the ones in the video. worth a buy if you want to follow a long anime style story
Heard so many good things about all these titles will be ordering and playing them after Xmas this year since they seem to all be relaunching on the Ps4. Thank you for highlighting this.
I had a Yakuza game forgot which one but while the ending credits was scrolling down one of the songs that played was amazing grace
My brother is Breaking Za Law by skipping all the cutscenes
When you realize you have been watching gameranx everyday for almost 2 years now
i've played yakuza 2 and 3 and i'm so excited this game came out it's what playstation needed to have in the next gen console in my opinion!
Such a underrated franchise
your reviews are the only ones I pay real attention 2 anymore thanks for being informative and really going in deep with the games
Im so drop dead gorgeous that when I ask girls out they turn me down because they don't feel worthy enough
Been a huge yakuza fan for a long time and the only complaint I really have about the series is the fact they never bring the original openings over. I feel like they really help set the tone before the game even starts.
PsychoHaro that intro of the YAKUZA 1 if you remember..... damn NOSTALGIA.
was waiting for u to compare this to sleeping dogs
me too
Szycrotic same
sleeping dogs is way too cool if u ask me
There's nothing to compare outside of them being asian. Yakuza's an action JRPG and not a GTA ripoff
Szycrotic this has nothing to do with sleeping dogs, it's a game franchise as old as 2005 and WAY more story driven and overall better
