I am very tempted by this watch. It looks like one of the best vintage revivals I have ever seen. Perfect style for casual daily wear and has a utility feel too, as it would as a military piece. Its a winner.
I find it a bit too expensive for what it offer, may I suggest the Marathon general purpose mechanical and you can always add a 16mm nato leather strap to it. Other good choices are the Aquatico super Charger or the Hamilton Khaki Aviation Pilot Pioneer Mechanical .

One of my main criteria for purchasing a watch (everyone is different) is the dial. It's a big selling point for me and this sand blast dial is gorgeous. My watch preference has changed in the last few years from modern sport watches to a more vintage look. This watch looks amazing, just wish it was slightly bigger. The low water resistence doesnt bother me as it a watch that doesnt really suit a swimming pool. Have other watches for that situation. Thanks for a good review.
Richard, I wrote this in a comment here before... I also wish Longines one day will do the same watch in 40-42 mm in a 100 meter waterproof case with a woven textile strap matching the dial color...
@@WatchAdvisor with the exception of Rolex, it does seem that most brands are releasing new models with smaller cases. Seems to be the trend and what consumers want recently. So much more in your excellent footage than is conveyed on Longines' website (which like many [ahem, JLC], makes its watches look a bit flat and uninteresting). Wow, what a box-section! And that lume surprised me! I'd have loved it to be hand wind - using that big crown would be a pleasure! Once again a great review Alexander. This is a very interesting piece, by modern day looks the dial looks like it will have lume and the hands and hour numbers are dark (hands are actually blue as shown in your video) whereas the hands and numbers have lume and the dial does not. I really like this. I also love that retro look. The case having drilled lugs is also good should you wish to swap out the strap although that 19mm lug width will restrict band some of the options somewhat. That sapphire box crystal is the icing on the cake. I also find it interesting that the movement is a 25200 VPM from a 2892 derived ETA movement, the same as a lot of Omega movements over the years. I'm actually quite pleased that they did not just back it down to a 3 Hz movement for a smoother seconds sweep but should extend service intervals in theory. Price wise, it's getting closer to Tudor but I think it's priced OK for what you get.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! Interesting read... Hello Alexander, nice video as always! But there's a mistake is your comment: The "S" on the case back stands for sapphire crystal, the two lines underneath the letter for double anti-reflective coating. In this case on the inside, there are also lines above the "S" for external anti-reflective coating in case it was used. Longines uses the abbreviation "Si" for silicon hair springs. And although the MN has a silicon hair spring (L888.5), the case back is not marked for it. Keep on with your great work, greetings from Germany!
Thank you very much for letting me know... in the official technical description the sapphire crystal is described as being coated only underneath... so I never thought this would be used therefore... I am not a sales rep! I mentioned more than one time, and you may read it in the description of the video, that the L888.5 features a silicon hairspring and I know that the Swatch Group uses “Si” on its calibres to underline this. This watch does not feature a see-through case-back, so you won’t find the “Si” and therefore I thought the “S” does express it... Well, I learned something...

@@WatchAdvisor thank you. Coming to think of it, my watch has absolutely no lume. I’ll double check again, but the boutique confirmed the lack of lume. You must have gotten a special piece 😁
@@WatchAdvisor I charged the lume directly (with sunlight and a bright non-halo light). Will try again. @7:27: there is a typo. I believe that it should say “the L888.5 is COSC certified, the L888.4 is not”. Right? Any info from Longines as to why they didn’t go the extra step to COSC-certify? Cost-saving? Keep up the good work 💪🏿
Hi Alexander. I loved this watch and considered buying it but only 30 meters water resistant for a watch with military provenance? Don’t these brands learn anything from Rolex and why they are so successful. Thanks for sharing.
That's what I said in the video... 30 meters are not enough... It is important that many articulate this, since it will help to make changes quickly... Longines is very much listening to its customers...
@@WatchAdvisor I know I'm in the minority, but hand winding is what I grew up with in the 1960s. I wish younger people could experience/understand the simple pleasure of winding a watch a few times before putting it on every morning!
It’s ridiculous that watches can’t be made below 38mm but have no problem making 44+mm. People always say it wouldn’t sell well but I have yet to see a decent mechanical watch in the last 5 years made under 38mm. So how can we know? I have a 35mm Casio classic and it is one of the most sold watches of the decade.
For sub-38mm watches you may want to have a look at smaller brands. I myself just bought a hand-wound Smiths "Air Ministry" at 36mm. There is Stowa too that makes some 36mm watches. You should also have Tudor and Oris that both have a model in 36.
I like the nice compact size with the big crown and drilled lugs ; nice overall package. However 50 to 100 m water resistance would have been nice , along with possibly an off white dial that didnt scream fauxtina.
Thanks-you’ve done an excellent job-I especially appreciate how you use a pointer to show the viewer exactly what you’re talking about.... I love this watch but hate the strap-can you recommend a good metal strap in particular? Again, thank you very much.
Thanks for sharing your feedback with us and your kind words. Longines has no bracelet for it … the watch is meant to be worn with a strap… I wish I could recommend you a bracelet but I can’t - Sorry!
Longines released a heritage watch similar to this a few years prior; similar dial color and reissue dimensions. I think it was from a British army model? Not sure. I find this one kind of attractive, though. The blue hands with lume are a nice touch...
I have the original 1947 Nationale, approx 33.2mm diamter without crown, just curious what kind of value it can bring nowadays, original aged dial and no dents on case, beautiful watch.
Almost impossible to answer ... very difficult 😥 ... Can you try both at the same time? If yes, do it and let your heart decide... it won’t cheat on you...
Nice watch and real value for money. Swiss VAT is only 7.7 %. I think they took the right decision with the luminova. Personally I would just change the strap to match the khakis, while getting lost in the garden jungle.
I said it in the video... More WR would be it... But now, since we are in a lockdown, what is a 100m water restaurant? Is this a kind of hidden restaurant, by invitation only 😉😁
@@WatchAdvisor Firstly, not all the world is on lockdown. Secondly I happen to live on the Mediterranean))) Thirdly, I am not the tidiest man. And often when I wash my hands my watch gets some splashes on it. Being troubled it may require service due to hand washing routine is unacceptable for me.
@@yashav2949 Of course I know what you mean! I said it in the video... You didn’t get the point about the „restaurant“... I was trying to joke around with you about that funny typo... apologies if you thought I offended you...
When longines say the watch is water resistant to 3 bar it really does mean up to 30 m. You can swim you can do what you want with it. Longines water resistance is spot on and how many of us actually go deeper than 30 m?

Tastes are different... my recommendation is to try to get both watches on your wrist one after the other and then let your heart decide... it will not cheat on you... in terms of make and quality both are top notch...
@@WatchAdvisor i think the trend of smaller and thinner watches is returning. Look at the Ultra Thin APs, Bvlgaris and Piagets coming out. Dear sir, please tell me the differences between the 's' symbol on the case back of Longines Military Marines and Longines Hydro Conquest (L3.741.4.56.6) ? Because I believe The Longines Hydro Conquest does not have a silicon hairspring.
This was my mistake! I thought the “S” on the case-back indicates a silicon hairspring... This is wrong! The “S” stands for antireflective treatment of the sapphire crystal... I apologize for creating confusion...
@@WatchAdvisor Actually S stands fo " saphire " and the two lines underneath are for the antireflective coating: one line = one layer, two lines= two layers. At least this is what Longines says in the instructions manual
This, along with those instances where a date window spoils the aesthetic are virtually my only gripes with Longines. They just released a new gradient dial Legend Diver which is virtually perfect except for the date dial.
I clearly marked it beside the picture of the L888.5 and wrote it in the description: The L888.5 is NOT certified by COSC. That does not mean that it is as precise as the ones that go to COSC. Can you really define everything in mm? Is that one mm so essential? Isn’t the how-does-the-watch-feel-on-the-wrist that one and only criteria? Just thinking loud... I only decide if I had my intense touch and feel...
@@WatchAdvisor Dear Alexander, design and history of those watches is great. But it is a fairly simple three hand watch n a leather strap. I think Hamilton, Fortex, Monta or Christopher Ward offers more. But to compare online purchase and an brand like Longines would be not fair. If I forget history and reputation of Longines I see the watch at around 1300 max. I have a heritage diver without date. I was overwhelmed about the design when I bought it 2008 in Wuxi. Compared to the Military MN it offers a bit more. Nevertheless I enjoy watching your channel and looking forward to seeing more of your watch presentations or interviews with high level CEOs. Best regards, Matthias
In terms of quality/make no mentioned brand can be compared to Longines. Not even Hamilton, a sister Brand from Swatch Group. The L888.5 is one of the best and most accurate contemporary, mass manufactured automatic calibres equipped with a silicon hairspring. This is a quality designed by Longines and manufactured exclusively for Longines by ETA. The quality is at the level where Omega was before starting with the Master Chronometer certification. The same applies for the case, dial, hands, crown, ... The money you pay for this heritage watch is absolutely fair. What you get is unparalleled! No other brand offers anything comparable...
I own a Longines COSD reissue model, generally a solid and a good looking watch, here in case of the Marine Nationale model I would perhaps consider to add fat numbers on the dial to make the watch to look a bit more dated... I also dont quite like to style of black hands, but this is perhaps my subjective opinion only. I wish Longines would develop their own affordable and robust inhouse movement.. this would add a lot to value of their watches
@@WatchAdvisor It seems like an unusual colour for faux lume. Normally 'faux vintage' has a light brown colour, like the colour of radium or tritium paint which was originally cream/white but which has decayed over decades. Here it seems to me they have replicated the colour of radium paint which was originally black? (Or is it even the original hue that dark radium pain would have had?)
The 888.4 is COSC certified, the 888.5 not … we didn’t have a picture of the 888.5 so we showed the 888.4 … as written it is identical to 888.5 and on top COSC certified
I love this watch but really the faux aging (specks on dial and black lume) turned me away. I know it would look very ordinary a watch without these fauxtina on remakes of vintage watches, but that is really what I want. I truly just want a modern re-make of a vintage design, without the aging. Vintage designs are generally very functional and that is all I ask of a watch.
Either you stay loyal to the original design or not... If you do... this kind of lume is part of the game... Longines could use the attractive design and build a new and bigger version of the old reference 5774 ... then white lume would be appropriate...
@@WatchAdvisor what are your thoughts on the smiths military vs this watch? at half the price and anti-magnetic it seems legit, although I hear they're made in Hong Kong which is kind of a turn off as I would prefer Swiss or Japanese...but they're beautiful watches that are a pain to purchase
Same style and type of watch ... main difference is design and the L888.5 that features a silicon hairspring. Which one do you prefer? Longines offers also longer straps...
You will not find anything comparable - history, make, quality, design, prestige - sold for the same price... Longines offers incredible value for the money...
Welp, 'Swing and a Miss' from Longines...and they were doing so well. They reverted to their classic 30M w/r and the lugs are WAAAY too heavy for this case. The lug holes are too close to the case giving it that Girard Perregaux "Flying Wings" look(the real reason GP don't sell). If the hands are going to look black, why not just make them black? Pre-aged dial is hillarious! They should have called it the 'Train Wreck 2021 by Longines' Best served as a $600 US Quartz model. The kids love this shit. Lest I forget, military folk are hostages, general buying public can pick and choose. Did Longines sell this to the general public in 1947?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! There is not much room for manoeuvre if you want to stay loyal to the "Heritage" design of the Longines watch from 1947. I of course understand your points, but IMHO they are more to be seen as a constructive input for a new/different model... As far as I know the watch was "only" delivered to the French Navy...
Wow... yet again a miss imho, right size, great look but no practicality. Hard to believe they can’t pair the right things together to make absolute classics. At least 50m WR and you’re there🤦♂️

I hear you! Will put your input on the to-do-list...
@@WatchAdvisor Keine Ursache...;-) Ich finde Deine Videos generell sehr gut (auch die damaligen Interviews z.B. mit Herrn von Känel), das alles hat mich auch zum Longines-Fan werden lassen. I’ve been following the Longines military heritage range with interest for some time, but this the first time I have seen a watch and thought YES, I MIGHT NEED THIS! 👌

Great review. I bought one 2 weeks ago. Thanks for the info. 49mm lug-to-lug!!?? It sure wears smaller than that
Congratulations! Bravo! It wears perfect on the wrist! At least this was my impression... I don't give so much on numbers and sizes... I always let my heart decide, the latter does not cheat on me... May your Longines always show you HAPPY seconds, minutes and hours....
@@WatchAdvisor thank you. Coming to think of it, my watch has absolutely no lume. I’ll double check again, but the boutique confirmed the lack of lume. You must have gotten a special piece 😁
No issue with the watch I had for filming... Strange 🤷🏻♂️ Did you „charge“ it appropriately ... did enough light reach the dial during day?
@@WatchAdvisor I charged the lume directly (with sunlight and a bright non-halo light). Will try again.
@7:27: there is a typo. I believe that it should say “the L888.5 is COSC certified, the L888.4 is not”. Right? Any info from Longines as to why they didn’t go the extra step to COSC-certify? Cost-saving?
Keep up the good work 💪🏿

I will film all the brands novelties at the Longines HQ in April...
@@WatchAdvisor Looking forward to it!
I'm curious isn't 3 bar like a 100ft why do you feel that's not enough on a dress watch 🤔?
Simple beauty!
True! 😉
I LOVE this one
I loved it too! Astonishing what Longines delivers these days and what you have to pay...
@@WatchAdvisor i know. Basically there are more longines i would buy than the ones i would buy not...
@@user-do8ef4np7q I buy one a year... There is always one I like...
Beautiful watch, but it is a shame it wasn't given a manual hand winding movement, that would have been perfect.
A majority of buyers though wants an automatic calibre… but of course I understand you… 😉
@@WatchAdvisor I know I'm in the minority, but hand winding is what I grew up with in the 1960s. I wish younger people could experience/understand the simple pleasure of winding a watch a few times before putting it on every morning!
Beautiful watch, however the dial is too yellow and the lume is too dark for my taste. Otherwise great case and a wonderful reedition!
Is it yellow? Or beige? Or a sandy color? I was not able to define the color... this is why I filmed the watch in different lights for you...
This is what is selling. Most buyers don't have a problem with it, or else the watches wouldn't sell. It's as simple as that.
I like the nice compact size with the big crown and drilled lugs ; nice overall package. However 50 to 100 m water resistance would have been nice , along with possibly an off white dial that didnt scream fauxtina.
The dial looks like the dial did on the old reference 5774... It is a contemporary re-edition made slightly bigger... More WR? Yes, I agree!
Longines customers are spoilt for choice ... 😉
I have the original 1947 Nationale, approx 33.2mm diamter without crown, just curious what kind of value it can bring nowadays, original aged dial and no dents on case, beautiful watch.
Send me an email with pictures and I will forward it to a specialist at Longines who might help you…
heritage lines are gorgeous! one quick question. MN vs. sector dial. which one is preferred for you?
Almost impossible to answer ... very difficult 😥 ... Can you try both at the same time? If yes, do it and let your heart decide... it won’t cheat on you...
The lugs look kind of long for a 38.5 mm diameter watch. I wonder how it wears on smaller wrists?
You need to get the watch on your wrist! Only then you will know if it fits or not...
I wore the watch today and the lugs do appear quite long and don’t hug the wrist. They sit quite flat when wearing on the wrist
Nice watch and real value for money. Swiss VAT is only 7.7 %. I think they took the right decision with the luminova. Personally I would just change the strap to match the khakis, while getting lost in the garden jungle.
I hear you... had comparable thoughts already... I would choose a woven textile strap in a color that comes close to the dial ...
@@WatchAdvisor Yes. Me an olive Nato style
I love it. I would definitely look for a good deal for this watch - if only it was 100m water restaurant
I said it in the video... More WR would be it... But now, since we are in a lockdown, what is a 100m water restaurant? Is this a kind of hidden restaurant, by invitation only 😉😁

Firstly, not all the world is on lockdown. Secondly I happen to live on the Mediterranean)))
Thirdly, I am not the tidiest man. And often when I wash my hands my watch gets some splashes on it. Being troubled it may require service due to hand washing routine is unacceptable for me.

When longines say the watch is water resistant to 3 bar it really does mean up to 30 m. You can swim you can do what you want with it. Longines water resistance is spot on and how many of us actually go deeper than 30 m?

@@WatchAdvisor Thank you, sir!
@@WatchAdvisor Actually S stands fo " saphire " and the two lines underneath are for the antireflective coating: one line = one layer, two lines= two layers. At least this is what Longines says in the instructions manual
@@b.s.6381 Of course… this was my mistake … I was so obsessed about the silicon balance-spring 🤦🏻♂️ … Thanks again for clarifying …
Can i ask why, in 2021, we still have 3atm watches? What is the purpose to have a watch that might not fight a 10 time per day "hand sanitation"?
I said it in the video... I don't know! It should be more - yes!
@@WatchAdvisor yes, I did listen it 10 sec after writing my comment... 😁 Still, to me, 3atm should be abolished forever.
This, along with those instances where a date window spoils the aesthetic are virtually my only gripes with Longines. They just released a new gradient dial Legend Diver which is virtually perfect except for the date dial.
It looks rugged but is fragile, it makes no sense
One thing that is not entirely clear: is this caliber COSC certified? Or if not, does it nevertheless have chronometer-equivalent level timekeeping?
I clearly marked it beside the picture of the L888.5 and wrote it in the description: The L888.5 is NOT certified by COSC. That does not mean that it is as precise as the ones that go to COSC. The L888.4 (with COSC) and L888.5 (without COSC) are identical... No difference ion production/fine-tuning, only one goes to COSC one does not...
@@WatchAdvisor Alles klar. (However your description in the video reads: "The L888.4 is COSC certified, the L888.4 is not" Ein Widerspruch also... Es war mir wirklich unklar, was damit gemeint war...)
@@j.burgess4459 Typo! Sorry!
@@WatchAdvisor Kein Problem - Jetzt verstehe ich ;-)
The movement isn't COSC but the L888 is an excellent movement and often keeps COSC time anyway.
I like the watch. It falls very short in terms of water resistance. The 19mm lug width is the only other negative.
I understand the 30 meters... But what is wrong with the 19 mm?
20mm tapering to 16mm is best in my opinion.
Can you really define everything in mm? Is that one mm so essential? Isn’t the how-does-the-watch-feel-on-the-wrist that one and only criteria? Just thinking loud... I only decide if I had my intense touch and feel...
@@WatchAdvisor I respect your perspective.
The watch is really interesting and unique, but the value proposition is not so good. For nearly 2000 bucks I expect a bit more
Please name me any brand that offers more / a better quality in that price range.
Longines gets exclusive calibres from ETA meanwhile. The taylor made calibres used by Longines you won’t find anywhere else in that configuration…
@@WatchAdvisor Thanks for replay but this means that Longines is doing it to cut down the costs...am I right?
what is about the lume?
It is the discussion about "fauxtina" ...
Does anyone know where I can purchase this watch or know anyone who is selling? Thanks!
Not that I know… look online for it… be patient… I am sure you will find one…
In your opinion what would you suggest as a good price for one of these watches used, in excellent condition box/ papers included
No idea! I am sorry….
just sub'd! great review ive been waiting very long for this. May i know your wrist size?
17 cm
What is the diameter of the actual dial? 31.5mm? Smaller? The stepped bezel takes up quite a bit of real estate
Just - as you did - deduct some millimeters from the actual case size and you are there ...
The explanation at 7:33 is confusing, which movement is the COSC certified, exactly?
The 888.4 is COSC certified, the 888.5 not … we didn’t have a picture of the 888.5 so we showed the 888.4 … as written it is identical to 888.5 and on top COSC certified
@@WatchAdvisor ah okay great, thank you for the clarification.
Does anti reflective make it easy to scratch???
The outer side of the sapphire crystal does not have an antireflective treatment... only the inner side...
@@WatchAdvisor so that means it works like normal sapphire crystal ?
What is the daily rate, accuracy please.
-4/+6 seconds per day
I love this watch but really the faux aging (specks on dial and black lume) turned me away.
Excellent video... but no lume, 30m WR is not even good for washing hands and those extremely long lug to lug distance are a no-go.
It is a 1:1 replica of a historic Longines watch...
@@WatchAdvisor OH I thought there was no lume... beautiful indeed, just cut those lugs 3mm each!
It has lume.
How accurate is it? Is it better than +\- 25 sec a year? If it’s +\- 5 sec I’ll buy it🤘
This is a mechanical wristwatch, not a quartz! Less than -4/+6 seconds per day is what you get...
@@WatchAdvisor just realized I wrote year instead of day, that's great for a mechanical. thanks for the reply and great review btw

What is your limit/preference?
How does this one compare with the RAF military heritage watch? The strap looks short.
Same style and type of watch ... main difference is design and the L888.5 that features a silicon hairspring. Which one do you prefer? Longines offers also longer straps...
@@WatchAdvisor I slightly prefer the Marine Nationale. The face colour seems more vivid.
Is this good value for the money? It’s a simple looking watch but what aspects of it justify the price?
You will not find anything comparable - history, make, quality, design, prestige - sold for the same price... Longines offers incredible value for the money...
It is a nice-looking watch (I really do like it's appearance) but terrible value for money. At least half of the price goes for the brand and the box.
Longines is a very respected company that has great 👍 history
I hate the 19mm strap - everything else is great.
This should be your last problem, since there are hundreds of alternatives available...

Wow... yet again a miss imho, right size, great look but no practicality. Hard to believe they can’t pair the right things together to make absolute classics. At least 50m WR and you’re there🤦♂️
I said it in the video... a little more WR would have been it... this is not a diver and basically you are ok for daily use, but when you “push the limits” 30 meters soon aren’t enough
