- In tribute to Shearer's contribution to Newcastle United over more than ten years, the club erected a large banner of Shearer on the outside of the cantilever superstructure of the Gallowgate End of St James' Park. The banner measured 25 metres (82 ft) high by 32 metres (105 ft) wide, covering almost half of the Gallowgate End, aptly placed above the club bar, Shearer's, opened in his honour in 2005. The banner depicted Shearer as the "Gallowgate Giant", with one arm aloft in his signature goal celebration, with the message "Thanks for 10 great years", and was featured in the media coverage reflecting on his career at the club,[53][54][55][56] with the banner being displayed from 19 April 2006 until 11 May 2006, the day of his testimonial match. The banner could be seen across the city and as far away as Gateshead across the River Tyne, standing taller than the iconic local landmark, the Angel of the North.
Shearer was awarded a testimonial match by the club, against Scottish-side Celtic. All proceeds of the match went to charitable causes. Because of the injury he sustained three games earlier at Sunderland, Shearer was unable to play in the whole match; however he kicked-off the game and came off the bench to score a penalty, winning the game 3--2.[57] The match was a sell-out, and saw Shearer perform a lap of honour at the end with his family, with his young son notably covering his ears due to the volume of noise produced by the crowd in tribute.
This was the only game as a celtic fan i didnt mind losing. Amazing atmosphere that night. Shearer reminds me of Larsson, different types of players, but world class and could have moved to bigger clubs, but they had loyalty. Something no players have these days. Loyalty is what makes people remember. Celtic were real good sports this night. Good game

Love Shearer. I was down for the beardsley testimonial and I'm sure peter got a soft pen to mark his big night to. Miss the trips down to play the english sides. Loved seeing the famous stadiums and hearing the english fans opinions on football etc. Swap a scarf and buy a badge. Get the feeling things have became to divisive in the UK these days for celtic to travel in big numbers without EDL types getting upset and the younger celts being a bit to hardcore at times.

Newcastle fans do prefer Rangers overall. It has been sought to be that way over the years. That being said. Good on you for supporting a decent team in Newcastle. The more fans the merrier. Pretty sure more fans would be unbaised to any old firm team in general down in England but just kinda basising my initial premise off of word of mouth at my end.
I'm a Newcastle fan that supports Celtic. Dont listen to the drivel about rangers below. No one supports rangers that i know of. When i was a kid we had scarves with Celtic and the toon on them. No blue in sight.
god bless you for that, we had a great night at Ally McCoist's testimonial where both sets of fans got on great which will explain a lot, most of us are unbiased and just like Glasweigians in general I guess, my dad used to work there and spoke well of the people, so i know i do.

Jackie Milburn and SuperMac are two names EASILY ahead of Owen for striker berths in a All-Time United XI IMHO.
in fairness there's not many people behind Owen for those positions - Owen isn't close to making the greatest XI's of any club he played for and even when he was with us he wasn't a shoe in (Viduka and Shearer being miles better, Ameobi and Martins probably more useful, Carroll more effective)
