He was a penalty specialist in his day with 56 goals and a 83% conversion rate. They are players with higher conversion rates, but they've scored far less penalties. Thus wouldn't have been studied to anywhere near the extent Shearer would have been. Not to mention he was up against the best keepers for 10+ years.

The best penalty takers could tell you what side they were going to, and the goalkeeper still wouldn't stop it.

Shearer was simply awesome. Never seen a player anything like as good as him for England and being Scottish people often argue with me but I say he's one of the greatest of all time, even though he wasn't the most fancy, for a pure striker they don't come better.
Honestly I don’t see how you can hate Shearer. Mans a top guy, never scandalous, always professional. Good advice as well, cause it’s never easy. Not to mention he’s one of the best in prem history. Unless aguero plays regularly for another 4 years or Kane continues until his mid 30’s, I don’t see anyone beating Shearer’s record anytime soon. Class player

Without a doubt the best penalty taker I've ever seen. When he was at Rovers he was the best striker, the best header and the best crosser of the ball at the club. Shame he could never run quickly enough to get on the end of his own crosses and thrash the ball in the back of the net ;). Best player Rovers have ever had in my opinion. I don't think any of us ever got over him leaving.

Alan Shear took 75 penalties in his career and missed 4. Incredible I was always confodent he would smash in top left corner when he would step up
...Newcastle made him symbol of the club ..and for a top player (dedicated profesional)having such a freedom ,authority on the pitch ..is absolutely important factor of having such of confidence,on everything he did (penallty stats just confirm/and create an idea of the percentual of Alan Shearer confidence on the pitch.)

At its best, the Shearer penalty - hit hard and swept up to the left - was unstoppable. The goalkeeper would've needed to be 3 metres tall to stop it or would have to stand way over towards his right-hand post - in which case Shearer could've just slid it low to the keeper's left and left him chanceless.

Amusingly Alan Shearer holds the record for both the most penalties missed and most penalties scored.(within the premier league). Meaning he must also hold the record for the most penalties taken

@@Yong_Goh success rate doesn't matter. You could have a 100% success rate but only take one penalty. Most scored is the only relevant stat.
@@JG-ib7xk I can see your logic there… but if one fella scores 1000 out of 10,000 penalties it is a very poor conversion rate. But since there is no correct sample size that determines a relevant successful conversion rate there will always be room for discussion. What’s not up for discussion is that shearer is one of the best in the biz from the spot!
@@JG-ib7xk wrong... success rate is by far the most important stat, but as all stats, it's not accurate with small sample sizes.

Shearer was absolutely brilliant. If he went to United then he would be considered up there with the all time greats.
For a 5/6 year period in the 90s Shearer was the best striker in the prem.
In my opinion better than Cole, Yorke, Wright, Fowler, Teddy ect. Proved it at international level.... Tbh he could have played anywhere in Europe.

Matt Le Tissier was so good he didn't pick a spot. He would start his run up intending to put it to the keeper's left, and if he saw the keeper diving left, he wrapped his foot around the ball and sent it to the keeper's right.
He was class.
