An Aphex Twin reaction video posted April 14th that's not the song "Avril 14th"?! 😋
I love the song "Vordhosbn" off the same album. I would describe it as a frontal attack of dynamic drum/snare riffs that still maintain a very centered feel and drives the song forward, accompanied with underlying tones of melancholy and dissociation.
However, I always recommend "Alberto Balsalm
" for first-time Aphex Twin listeners, simply because it is fun to listen to and the iconic "table-slide" noise is very memorable.

    • @derekfletcher8934
      @derekfletcher8934 2 года назад +4

Hey you seem knowledgeable in Aphex Twin. I am not quite so lol. But maybe you can help me find a song of I describe it. It was on a burned mix cd someone gave me roughly in 2009 that I've unfortunately lost.
It was claimed to be an Aphex Twin track on the handwritten listing. The song is about 7 minutes long with the main drone being something that sounds like a didgeridoo. It's constant. Then as the song builds there are these clapping noises and eventually chirping. That's why it sounded like a didgeridoo song to me. The bass drone gets more and more complicated as well as the tempo of the clapping sounds and in the end it goes back to that weird croaking/chirping/crickets noise.
I loved training out to it and haven't been able to remember the title so any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could honestly make an entire channel out of digging into Aphex Twin's catalogue. His music is all over the place and I hear something new each time I listen through any of his albums. He's really in a league of his own. Some is chaotic and overwhelming and compositionally erratic, and some is beautiful and smooth, with surprisingly emotional content. It's difficult to recommend another track of his to check out because... they're almost all worth checking out.

It is one thing to create multiple layers that flow together, but to give so much detailed and cohesive variation throughout a piece is impressive and difficult to recreate. Really shows his mastery of the tools and his natural talent. He is an inspiration.

If you enjoyed this, Squarepusher is a great one as well. He's a a breakbeat/dnb artist that also plays bass guitar. Some of his tracks are almost offensive in how uncomfortable they make you, but he always manages to drag you over the summit and enjoy everything coming together in a more comfortable state. Ultravisitor is the opening track of the similarly named album, that lures you in with something fairly straightforward and exhilarating.. but compare that with Steinbolt, later on in the album and you could almost feel tricked as a listener. Yet for me that track has become my favorite on the album after repeated listening. It demands attention, but leaves enough to sweep you along.
Having said all that, Squarepusher definitely is a hit and miss artist for me. Some of his stuff just feels cheesy and off, though his latest album and ep's managed to get me back.

Great reaction! This is one of my favorite songs of all time because of it’s seemingly infinite emotional capacity to be melancholy, relaxed, atmospheric, energetic, and sentimental/reflective all at the same time. Only thing I would like to note is that while electronic musical instruments such as computers, synthesizers, drum machines, samplers, sequencers, trackers, etc… can be sterile, they are not necessarily always sterile. Sterile/synthetic/artificial textures can definitely be leveraged as an artistic tool, like with Chiptune, Vaporwave, Muzak, Elevator Music, etc… However, electronic musical instruments are not necessarily always sterile for multiple different reasons. One example is that not all electronic musical instruments are digital or binary. Many electronic musical instruments are analog, meaning they work with natural continuous variable number values that are not bound to a discrete digital system like 1s and 0s. Many analog synthesizers and drum machines utilize the same technology often used by electric guitar, bass, and keyboard amplifiers. Another example is the fact that just because something uses digital binary numbers, doesn’t necessarily mean that the end product is going to sound or look sterile. Digital synthesizers that sound sterile on their own can sound extremely natural and expressive if arranged in the right way. Furthermore, upgrades in both hardware and software can increase the discrete digital binary finite resolution of something to the point of being indistinguishable from the original natural analog continuous source reference.

Because Squarepusher was gonna blow out the speakers a third of the way through the first day. He threw a massive fucking tantrum and just played midi bass noodling for 40 minutes interspersed with him screaming at the sound guy 'd'you like that? Do you? Is it fucking loud enough for you?'

Very cool to see you doing Aphex Twin and some IDM in general. As much as I love the genre, "intelligent" dance music is such an obnoxious, pompous name which if I'm not mistaken James himself (Aphex Twin) has said he dislikes.
I'm sure you'll get more recs for this sort of stuff, but my hands down favourite I think you should try out is Bola, aka Darrell Fitton. He's got a fantastic sound and doesn't get enough appreciation imo, I think give anything from his '98 album 'Soup' a try. Another excellent electronic artist is Amon Tobin.
    Great vid as always!

Darrell Fitton is an excellent suggestion! Would love to see Geebz discover him, and I totally agree that he doesn't get the visibility he deserves.

Thanks for the reminder. I haven't listened to Bola in ages, but a favorite for sure.

You are correct intelligent dance music term is pretentious and elitist but IDM represents a very specific pool of artists - Afx, autectre, u-Ziq etc

Im a metal head and I've always thought aphex twin was innovative and way ahead of his time before laptops and he built his own equipment.

    Best Intro Ever.
I loved this analysis. I became obsessed with this song after hearing it in a slowed/transposed version, because I missed a lot of details the first time I heard the original one.
I'm glad RUclips recommended this. With Richard David James' music there's a lot to cover.

This was a welcome surprise for a change-up, I love this type of electronic music. I'll have to look a little more into Aphex Twin, this was very cool to listen to.

Richard is also one of the most cutting edge artist ever. You need to check Squarepusher as it can be similar music, but he plays bass to it.

This is one of my favourite Aphex Twin tracks. I love how fractured the breaks are while it still remains rhythmical and predictable over time.

Please do more Aphex Twin. The lad is among peak humanity when it comes to musical sonic arrangements. I recommend the song *Ziggomatic 17* from the same album.

i love the way you articulated his panning technique at the end. I never picked up on that, and i've been studying his stuff for over 10 years. You did it on your first run, props man.
