  • The Chinese “beauty economy” is poised to be the biggest in the world, with growth dwarfing that of other nations. But this blockbuster rise in chemical treatments and plastic surgery could be cut short if Beijing decides it doesn’t fit with President Xi Jinping's “common prosperity” doctrine.

      What this video never asks is “whose beauty standards”. It tries to pass off blame on local “influencers” but doesn’t ask what influences the influencers. If you look at the type of surgery being requested, it’s double eyelid, it’s higher nose bridge, it’s sharper jawlines and facial features. Basically, trying to look more western because looking more western is looking beautiful. Maybe this was less of an issue when surgery was confined to the rich, but with the price of surgery dropping and becoming more accessible, now common everyday Chinese people can ponder how they can look more western too. And that is the core of the issue. It just goes to show the Asian races are still unconfident about the things that make them Asian and rather than trying to make such features as monolid, flat nose, or soft face be considered beautiful and desirable, they just adopt western beauty standards instead. And for Xi jingping, this is something worth cracking down on.

      This issue is the consequences of unchecked capitalism: they force you gently to consume stuff by making you addicted to certain standards. For example, why should I need BMW? Because the medias subconsciouly instruct me to buy BMW if I want to appear "strong man". I'm happy that President Xi has put a check on those capitalism behaviors. One day, in China, engineers, doctors, scientists... will be much more respected than the kinds of BTS and the likes...

      There’s no such thing as “doing if for yourself”. Beauty standards would not exist without society and they differ from culture to culture for that reason. Nobody is making themselves prettier for themselves, because without others and the masses, “pretty” would not exist and “pretty” would not matter. You can’t choose to place yourself somewhere on the scale of beauty if the scale does not exist, and it was not created long before anybody living now was alive.

    • @ataraxia7439
      @ataraxia7439 2 года назад +2

      I think we need to learn to make more nuanced distinctions than just doing something “for you self” vs “to satisfy societal standards”. Some ppl want to fit their cultures idea of beauty for just for themselves, it’s not one or the other. If a culture had a long tradition of face tattoos and someone from that culture wanted to get those tattoos, it would feel really weird to just default to saying that’s a negative thing.

    • @sanskritibarman4928
      @sanskritibarman4928 2 года назад +2

      @@ataraxia7439 what about the age old Chinese beauty standard that required women to have tiny feet and hence make them fit into uncomfortable iron shoes? Someone might believe its a way to celebrate their culture no matter how negative the impacts are, biologically. Even tattoos can have negative impacts on health. So it's a matter of unbiased choice rather than what u r led to believe u can choose (subliminal messaging). Just a discussion tho, nthg against it. I love getting henna tattoos (mehendi) during festive seasons as its been an integral part of my culture and is considered attractive.

    I’m so lucky to have Chinese parents who never held any beauty standards for my brothers and me. My mom was born and raised in China, but was in a rural area very south of China. My dad is Chinese but was raised in Vietnam, also in lived in a rural area. Because their families were too poor for a TV and lived far from the city, they were never exposed to all these beauty standards. My mom told me that it’s a blessing in disguise, because she never had to worry about how she looked because she had no one to compare to.

    • @sanskritibarman4928
      @sanskritibarman4928 2 года назад +11

      @@zuzanazuscinova5209 it's very rare to find 100% symmetry even with fillers or other cosmetic procedures. Plastic surgery has to do more with the socio-economic situation according to that logic. Social media and technology is the biggest culprit and facial familiarity is the biggest driving force here. We want to replicate what we consume on a daily basis for eg. Following influencers known for their looks, and with increasing amount of ppl generating more incomes they'll obviously want to get it invested in smthg that appeals to them.

    The reason that beauty is considered beautiful is because it is rare. If everyone is beautiful, will it still be considered beautiful? Maybe traits which were once considered to be unattractive will become more coveted because they will be unique. I disagree. I don't think uniqueness has much correlation with beauty. I'd argue unique features are actually uglier
      It's partially about how easy it is to see all your features at a glance, so symmetry & basic structures are generally more beautiful. Then it's about which features are masculine or feminine.

    • @ChocolateMilkyYummy
      @ChocolateMilkyYummy 2 года назад +15

      Its impossible to know the full scope of the effects of the evolved ability to perceive beauty, but it likely has been evolved to select for superior mate selection. And mate selection might not be the same for everyone. Meaning some people might make a better match evolutionarily and some might make worse, this can potentially explain why men are attracted to "Exotic" women, they are subconsciously attracted to women who are genetically different from them, conversely if they were attracted to people who looked very similarly to them, they might accidentally do inbreeding, which would not be evolutionarily advantageous, so over time the trait of being attracted to people similar to you might slowly be sanded down by time and generations, while the trait of being attracted to different people may spread.

    The less funny thing is the fact the fillers are collected in the skin, they don't get disolved entirely and the more you put, the more prone to having bumps and uneven face you become. So getting fillers into the nose may result into something quite ridiculous in the long term. But I guess, people who are thinking about NOW are not really interested in it. Or maybe they are not told or are even lied to by the surgeons.

They can look very attractive in their own way which we for sure cant achieve or mimic and that makes them stand out. But whenever they go overboard copying the western beauty like dying hair yellow/orange, wearing colourful lenses and wearing a ton of make up, literally makes me cringe. It's all just brainwashing, just like foot binding on Chinese women was the epitome of beauty in the 18th century, ...now it's viewed as very sad, painful and disfiguring. Society creates the false ideal of beauty for both men and women, and we're all trained to adopt that viewpoint from an early age with constant media messaging of what that standard "should" be. So then we spend money and aspire toward it. I hope that someday we can all wake up to understand that beauty is in the bravery of being true to oneself with complete self acceptance. We're all far more beautiful than we give ourselves credit.
