Very interesting method. Very different from most modern repros. Of course, it helps illustrate the need for reenactors (of all periods) to look at original sources instead of slavishly replicating always the same modern repros. Thanks, Santee.

Hey Santee. Been watching for a few years now, just wanted to give you some well wishes from a former Texas boy now holed up in the middle of nowhere in Missouri. Your videos here on the Arizona Ghostriders channel has helped me more than you know in getting my old west knowledge up to snuff, and it makes for some interesting conversations with my dad. Keep up the good work!

The folks at River Junction are great, I’ve been making purchases since they opened many years ago. As a matter of fact, while cleaning out my re-enacting stash, I found one of their catalogs, #1 to be exact. I have been eyeing that very belt myself, looks nice and like you said a heavy leather loaded with 40 44-40 cartridges gets heavy quick! Good luck on the new job!

Last week I just replaced my everyday custom leather gun belt (without loops) after 10 years. Still looks and works great, but I lost a fair amount of weight so I replaced it and got a ranger style belt. I have to say I like the leather tongue that goes under and into a loop -- it takes the pressure off the buckle and I find the belt doesn't try to roll over. Great topic. Thanks.

My gun belts have usually been Amish leather work belts with belt slides added for cartridges as I need them. The buckles are usually held on by what looks like rivets, but they are actually screws on the backside, so the buckle can easily be changed. Gotta have my fancy silver belt buckles with real preserved scorpions encased in them.

Awesome! I like that red leather. I got a regular red leather waist belt that was made in Mexico and is heavily embossed with flora designs. A lady in SoCal imports them and sells them. I pocket carry so I just need the belt to hold my breeches up, don't need them around my knees.
Anyway, a famous Colt advertisement from the 1890s shows a ranch girl wearing a plain pistol belt and the holster itself has 6 loops for spare cartridges. I've seen an antique original version of that holster too.
I can't imagine how heavy a belt would be with loops end to end! Especially a Mill's style Prairie Belt with .45-70 Government.
    👍😎

Did you know that by soaking the belt leather in water and letting it dry out in the sun it will shrink the leather to tighten up the bullet loops, the whole belt itself (so you don’t have to keep punching new holes) and lighten up the weight. Afterwards use febings leather conditioner sparingly on the grain side rather than grease or neatsfoot oil. Oil and grease make leather stretchy.
I enjoy your channel, I always get at least a chuckle.

I learned a lot about different gun belts from the old west.
Great job and well done, keep up the great work.
I got a lot of inspiration for the old west and retrofuturism inspired story/series I’m working on writing.
I’m definitely going to be adding different old West gun belts to my story alongside old west frontier attire.
There’s also going to 90s and 2000s retrofuturism attire in my story as well.
My story’s main character Mercia Hawkins will mostly be dressed in old west attire , well except for when he works at the main building of Gamelan investigative agency inc, where he is employed as one of the Mystery Z Files investigators.
In my story Mercia is both a lawman deputy and a investigative-agent who investigates anomalous paranormal activity.

I can't believe that I missed this video. But the timing was on target. I have a holster that was made in the 1880-1890's. And no, I ain't the original owner. I was thinking about how much I need a cartridge belt for it. I have a modern made, heavy leather one. But that's not something I figure even the old cowboys would wear as it would make for an uncomfortable ride if you had a bedroll pressing that stiff leather into your spine all day. I'll look at the site of which you spoke. Thanks for always pointing us in the right direction.

Brother, I understand walking around with the heavy gun belt. When you're carrying 20-30 lead bullets around, it gets heavy fast. I'm trying to find a lighter weight alternative to lead for my dummy rounds.

@@ArizonaGhostriders I've thought about using some JB Weld in a bullet mold. Just gotta make sure the JB Weld doesn't 'weld' the mold shut.
