There's a fine line of disrespect between a bit of ribbing and actual out of pocket behavior. If you fly off the handle everytime someone makes a joke at your expense you become an asshole nobody wants to be around as well. In an odd way this reminds me of an alcohol class I had to go to. I was 19 and we were camping.. long before cell phones.. and my buddy dropped a log on his foot. It split his foot in 2 like a ostrich foot. Shattered and pouring blood. I had literally had 2 bartles and James wine coolers... as i was rushing him to the hospital, again there were no phones to call for help, I was pulled over for speeding.. not swerving. After the ambulance came for my buddy the cop said he smelled alc and had me blow a test.. I blew ..06.. buy since I was under 21 they took me to JAIL.. for saving my bros life and foot lol.. they made me do 3 months of alcohol classes.. I wasn't even a drinker. And I kept popping off that I shouldn't be in the group. Guys were talking about getting drunk every night and beating their family. Guys were talking about selling their blood once a week to get vodka money.. ect ect.. where all I did was have 2 coolers while camping and had no choice but to get my bud to a hospital before he bled to death.. the council kept saying we were all the same.. NO.. WE WERE NOT THE SAME..

But he ended up having multiple surgeries .. kept having to put new pins through his ft. Was in a wheelchair for a year.. then crutches and a boot for a year. He was walking ok after that. Not sure how it effects him now that we are middle aged.. old injuries come back to haunt you at My age
I was riding my motorcycle home one night after the bar. I was drunker than shit. There was this bum lying in the middle of the road. He was going to be run over if left there so I pulled over knowing full well that this action would result in an interaction with the police at some time. I stopped anyway. I helped the guy out of the road shortly after the Cops showed up. They asked me what was going on, by this time there was a crowd and what not. Right before I got back on my bike one of the Cops asked me if I wanted him to follow me home to make sure I was ok. At that point I knew they could smell the booze. I said no thanks and got on my bike. They did nothing. If they had taken me to jail I still would have been ok with my decision to stop and help that man. Doing the right thing sometimes results in you getting screwed. But that does not change the fact that It was the right thing todo. You have morals, honor and convictions you should be proud of yourself.
As a Security Guard I can relate to what Ray is saying. A lot of people have become so rude because they have never felt any consequence for their actions.
Don't know about that, we can't quite say exactly what it was like to be a warrior in the worlds of old. We do our best on the research, but I always wonder what it was like just day to day, being a man in a world where people would shove a gladius in your gut instead of having the technology to mercifully just shoot you. I wonder if having to invest more sheer effort into ending a life hand-to-hand if you ever had beef with anyone, lent itself to a greater mutual respect? These days you can't even punch a guy in a dark alley without being recorded from 30 angles, so how much more careful were people in picking their fights or who they dished bullshit out to when it could come down to a dark, bludgeoning, rock-beating brawl in the dirt on the outskirts of the village, where nobody will be coming to rescue you but the actual man-eating wolves?

Yes, he does make some reasonable points and has a code of sorts, but the guy can't get through life in a healthy way. The counsellor is obviously a bit of a knob, but he's right in that you can't assault everyone who supposedly disrespects you (especially when a lot of the so-called 'disrespect' goes both ways, or is just a matter of opinion). The young guy he batters here had it coming, but the point is that this is Ray's normal way of dealing with problems, and it doesn't work for him. (SPOILERS) The fact that he puts his girlfriend's brother through a plate glass window at a family gathering is the case in point. Was the guy being a knob? Obviously yes, he was. However, the fact he couldn't take a deep breath and walk away is telling. The moment there's any kind of disagreement (no matter how petty) Ray goes to guns. He knows no other way, and it ruins his life.

It's not true, though. In many cases Ray is 'right' in that he's dealing with bad guys who deserve their comeuppance and don't respond to anything else, but in other cases (for example when Ray gets in an argument with the guy crossing the road and goes to prison for it) it's a two-way thing. Ray is not blameless, but he thinks his logic is perfect and anyone disagreeing in a heated moment deserves violence. In heated situations, it's so easy to get the wrong end of the stick, overreact or do something you later regret. Ray's way of dealing with things through violence sabotages his life and relationships.

There’s something about how he smiles with his mouth but not his eyes that gives you the feeling this is an extremely dangerous man, but only if you eff with him. Ray is one of the best well-written protagonists/antagonists of modern television, and the actor does a superb job in the role. So glad they turned this into a series.
People sent his way are more likely than not remorseful and he can exploit these weaker men. Ray wasn’t weak, the counsellor couldn’t bully him into submission. I mean, he tried, in the end, with his sarcasm. To make them all laugh at Ray. He’s playing with fire, knowing how volatile Ray can be. But he can’t help himself, it’s ingrained into his character.

You've somehow turned an inedadequate and underfunded counselling session into the counsellor "bullying" his group into submission because he joked about Ray's belief that he's doing society a favour by assaulting people he considers "assholes". Just an astonishingly wrong oversimplification of an otherwise fantastic and meaningful scene you would expect from a literal teenager.
@Jomchen, are we looking at the same scene? He is,subtly attempting to bully Ray into submission. He makes assumptions about the situation Ray describes: "youths," assuming Ray assaulted the men at the slightest offense (the ice cream), "you did it with your daughter standing there," etc. Every question is an attempt to make Ray seem like the bad guy. When Ray refuses to let the counselor mold the narrative, the counselor can only make a snide remark to recover his failed moral appeal. You can really tell which people actually understand reality when discussing this show. Immoral people will call Ray an antihero or a villain protagonist. Those with wisdom understand that, although Ray isn't perfect, he is mostly a hero who operates outside of the law only as a result of a government that is filled with moral busybodies.
The guy's using leading questions, loaded statements, and refuses to see the side of his counterpart. That is bullying, and if you don't see it, you are probably a bully too.

I agree with the "respect me, and I respect you" idea in theory. The problem with this in practice, is that "Respect" has multiple meanings that get interchanged in the same sentence. Often those that say this phrase are actually saying "show deference to me as a superior and I will afford you status as a human being." If everyone meant it and implemented it the way Ray does here, the world would be a better place.
Another problem is that he went for a completely disproportional response to the "disrespect". He escalated the situation. When he's the one "in power", sure, he can do that - but the _second_ he isn't, he should very quickly see why a disproportional response is a terrible thing. Imagine him hitting someone for "disrespecting" him - and the other person retaliates by killing his daughter. In _their_ eyes, it'd be exactly as justified as him hitting the guy, they just escalated one step further.
I agree with your first few sentences. There's a reason we have laws and courts. So many guys think they have to assert themselves, and small issues are escalated into big ones. The bit where Ray batters the guy at the crossing is a good example of this. Both parties made mistakes and went too far, but Ray casually beats the guy over a minor altercation. The guy who ends up on the deck would likely say the same thing as Ray here: he felt disrespected and like he was in the right. We're all human. You can't always be in the right. Ray's attitude means there's no room for error.
You are right. In my first year of high school, I was literally the 125 pound shrimp. Then I got tall, so I was a skinny tall dude. I got picked on all the time. Later in high school, I bulked. up, not alot, but enough to be able to defend myself. I got in fights, still, all the time. And it amazed me...I would try to talk my way out of a situation, and still get shoved, and then would roll my eyes and ok... I would hit the guy. Then he would stop bullying me. It's as if people don't understand something unless they get hurt. Handsome, popular guys with good grades would do it too, not just the class scum. And I would have to hit them in the face for them to finally get it. Finally in my senior year people laid off, but I spent most of my junior year hitting people. I think I hit probably 25 guys in my junior year. How totally screwed up is that?

In prison you're taught (often brutally) that every action/word has a corresponding reaction. Treat people with respect and dignity one reaction. Treat people with disrespect and ignorance another reaction. You'll learn quickly which reaction you prefer. People also choose who they mouth off to as well whether consciously/unconsciously. I remember a time when the Police use to belt up people for just looking at them strange or mouthing off. It’s so true I will give you a real world example. Standing in a line waiting to be served a women is next but a guy pushes in front. The lady to scared to say something, so I step in and say “Excuse me this lady was next” Generally the bloke backs down but I’d he doesn’t I push back and say “ How about being a gentleman” as a ex veteran respect is everything most assholes when challenged are cowards and back down . The counselor or whatever was disrespectful from the get-go. He was just trying to prove his point that Ray was just acting out for the sake of violence and that he revels in it. So he never tried to listen to what he was saying and kept trying to confront him but Ray was not having it so he topped it off by being sarcastic and making fun of him.
Ray's logic is solid. In a later exchange between him and the group counselor Ray (again) wins the debate by pointing to a case of justifiable violence: WWII.
"How many therapists have you assaulted?" "I don't answer questions." And I'm done commenting on Inbetween videos, it feels too easy. Great show, fantastic dialogue. The reality of its unreality is a problem.
Ray is right. That's how you deal with those people, the only way they understand. If someone is bullying you they won't stop until they're lying in the gutter. I don't like hitting people either. The truth is, it hurts. Punching someone hurts quite a bit actually, but I've done it and I never felt bad.

There's a fine line of disrespect between a bit of ribbing and actual out of pocket behavior. If you fly off the handle everytime someone makes a joke at your expense you become an asshole nobody wants to be around as well. The interesting thing to me is that the group leader is treating Ray like he's a sociopath. The actual fact is that Ray is oddly enough, very moral and ethical in his own way. Unfortunately, his way is frowned upon by polite society.

In an odd way this reminds me of an alcohol class I had to go to. I was 19 and we were camping.. long before cell phones.. and my buddy dropped a log on his foot. It split his foot in 2 like a ostrich foot. Shattered and pouring blood. I had literally had 2 bartles and James wine coolers... as i was rushing him to the hospital, again there were no phones to call for help, I was pulled over for speeding.. not swerving. After the ambulance came for my buddy the cop said he smelled alc and had me blow a test.. I blew ..06.. buy since I was under 21 they took me to JAIL.. for saving my bros life and foot lol.. they made me do 3 months of alcohol classes.. I wasn't even a drinker. And I kept popping off that I shouldn't be in the group. Guys were talking about getting drunk every night and beating their family. Guys were talking about selling their blood once a week to get vodka money.. ect ect.. where all I did was have 2 coolers while camping and had no choice but to get my bud to a hospital before he bled to death.. the council kept saying we were all the same.. NO.. WE WERE NOT THE SAME..

But he ended up having multiple surgeries .. kept having to put new pins through his ft. Was in a wheelchair for a year.. then crutches and a boot for a year. He was walking ok after that. Not sure how it effects him now that we are middle aged.. old injuries come back to haunt you at My age
I was riding my motorcycle home one night after the bar. I was drunker than shit. There was this bum lying in the middle of the road. He was going to be run over if left there so I pulled over knowing full well that this action would result in an interaction with the police at some time. I stopped anyway. I helped the guy out of the road shortly after the Cops showed up. They asked me what was going on, by this time there was a crowd and what not. Right before I got back on my bike one of the Cops asked me if I wanted him to follow me home to make sure I was ok. At that point I knew they could smell the booze. I said no thanks and got on my bike. They did nothing. If they had taken me to jail I still would have been ok with my decision to stop and help that man. Doing the right thing sometimes results in you getting screwed. But that does not change the fact that It was the right thing todo. You have morals, honor and convictions you should be proud of yourself.

Ive always thought a 4th season with Ray as a taxi driver come hitman would have been spectacular.
As a Security Guard I can relate to what Ray is saying. A lot of people have become so rude because they have never felt any consequence for their actions.
Women can be bad for it, cause they know you're not gonna hit em. That's why I'll only ever marry a woman who can throw a punch for me ow and then.

Don't know about that, we can't quite say exactly what it was like to be a warrior in the worlds of old. We do our best on the research, but I always wonder what it was like just day to day, being a man in a world where people would shove a gladius in your gut instead of having the technology to mercifully just shoot you. I wonder if having to invest more sheer effort into ending a life hand-to-hand if you ever had beef with anyone, lent itself to a greater mutual respect? These days you can't even punch a guy in a dark alley without being recorded from 30 angles, so how much more careful were people in picking their fights or who they dished bullshit out to when it could come down to a dark, bludgeoning, rock-beating brawl in the dirt on the outskirts of the village, where nobody will be coming to rescue you but the actual man-eating wolves?

@@glennwatson3313 agreed. On various occasions, Ray beats people for minor infractions. He is not a role model. Yes, he does make some reasonable points and has a code of sorts, but the guy can't get through life in a healthy way. The counsellor is obviously a bit of a knob, but he's right in that you can't assault everyone who supposedly disrespects you (especially when a lot of the so-called 'disrespect' goes both ways, or is just a matter of opinion). The young guy he batters here had it coming, but the point is that this is Ray's normal way of dealing with problems, and it doesn't work for him.
(SPOILERS) The fact that he puts his girlfriend's brother through a plate glass window at a family gathering is the case in point. Was the guy being a knob? Obviously yes, he was. However, the fact he couldn't take a deep breath and walk away is telling. The moment there's any kind of disagreement (no matter how petty) Ray goes to guns. He knows no other way, and it ruins his life.
This show was over when I started watching, truly amazing, one of the best of all time.

It's not true, though. In many cases Ray is 'right' in that he's dealing with bad guys who deserve their comeuppance and don't respond to anything else, but in other cases (for example when Ray gets in an argument with the guy crossing the road and goes to prison for it) it's a two-way thing. Ray is not blameless, but he thinks his logic is perfect and anyone disagreeing in a heated moment deserves violence.
In heated situations, it's so easy to get the wrong end of the stick, overreact or do something you later regret. Ray's way of dealing with things through violence sabotages his life and relationships.

Rays ways of making amendment was to give some stupid apology letter or some compensation on a mail to that man’s family. That’s how much of an ahole Ray is. He is a twisted narcissistic psychopath.
This was a criminally underated show, the ending was succinct and perfect. I gave it a watch solely based on this clip from this channel showing up in my recommended videos. So thank you for putting this out there. I binge watched it after the first episode!

There’s something about how he smiles with his mouth but not his eyes that gives you the feeling this is an extremely dangerous man, but only if you eff with him. Ray is one of the best well-written protagonists/antagonists of modern television, and the actor does a superb job in the role. So glad they turned this into a series.
The anger management counselor looks really angry that Ray isn't agreeing with him.
People sent his way are more likely than not remorseful and he can exploit these weaker men. Ray wasn’t weak, the counsellor couldn’t bully him into submission.
I mean, he tried, in the end, with his sarcasm. To make them all laugh at Ray. He’s playing with fire, knowing how volatile Ray can be. But he can’t help himself, it’s ingrained into his character.

You've somehow turned an inedadequate and underfunded counselling session into the counsellor "bullying" his group into submission because he joked about Ray's belief that he's doing society a favour by assaulting people he considers "assholes". Just an astonishingly wrong oversimplification of an otherwise fantastic and meaningful scene you would expect from a literal teenager.
@Jomchen, are we looking at the same scene? He is,subtly attempting to bully Ray into submission. He makes assumptions about the situation Ray describes: "youths," assuming Ray assaulted the men at the slightest offense (the ice cream), "you did it with your daughter standing there," etc. Every question is an attempt to make Ray seem like the bad guy. When Ray refuses to let the counselor mold the narrative, the counselor can only make a snide remark to recover his failed moral appeal.
You can really tell which people actually understand reality when discussing this show. Immoral people will call Ray an antihero or a villain protagonist. Those with wisdom understand that, although Ray isn't perfect, he is mostly a hero who operates outside of the law only as a result of a government that is filled with moral busybodies.
The guy's using leading questions, loaded statements, and refuses to see the side of his counterpart. That is bullying, and if you don't see it, you are probably a bully too.
@@CleetusGlobinto be fair this guy usually deals with wife beaters, child abusers etc, real pieces of trash whose choices and decisions led them to do bad things in anger. He’s not used to dealing with people like Ray who commits predetermined acts of violence (most of the time) in a controlled state of mind.
I agree with the "respect me, and I respect you" idea in theory. The problem with this in practice, is that "Respect" has multiple meanings that get interchanged in the same sentence. Often those that say this phrase are actually saying "show deference to me as a superior and I will afford you status as a human being."
If everyone meant it and implemented it the way Ray does here, the world would be a better place.
Another problem is that he went for a completely disproportional response to the "disrespect". He escalated the situation. When he's the one "in power", sure, he can do that - but the _second_ he isn't, he should very quickly see why a disproportional response is a terrible thing. Imagine him hitting someone for "disrespecting" him - and the other person retaliates by killing his daughter. In _their_ eyes, it'd be exactly as justified as him hitting the guy, they just escalated one step further.

I agree with your first few sentences. There's a reason we have laws and courts. So many guys think they have to assert themselves, and small issues are escalated into big ones.
The bit where Ray batters the guy at the crossing is a good example of this. Both parties made mistakes and went too far, but Ray casually beats the guy over a minor altercation. The guy who ends up on the deck would likely say the same thing as Ray here: he felt disrespected and like he was in the right. We're all human. You can't always be in the right. Ray's attitude means there's no room for error.
He's 100% right. Some people just don't learn unless they're beaten unconscious, then have to look at their face in the mirror for the next week.
You are right. In my first year of high school, I was literally the 125 pound shrimp. Then I got tall, so I was a skinny tall dude. I got picked on all the time. Later in high school, I bulked. up, not alot, but enough to be able to defend myself. I got in fights, still, all the time. And it amazed me...I would try to talk my way out of a situation, and still get shoved, and then would roll my eyes and ok... I would hit the guy. Then he would stop bullying me. It's as if people don't understand something unless they get hurt. Handsome, popular guys with good grades would do it too, not just the class scum. And I would have to hit them in the face for them to finally get it. Finally in my senior year people laid off, but I spent most of my junior year hitting people. I think I hit probably 25 guys in my junior year. How totally screwed up is that?
Here's the problem though, sometimes people decide people are assholes and they are wrong. Like when he brought up the whole thing about prison? He's full of shit, because inmates are always being pieces of shit and trying to justify it.
God, what a beautiful scene. I've never seen this show, this clip just popped up randomly. Him trying to explain morals and respect to his peers in a situation where his opinion should be heard and reflected on. Instead he's mocked for his honor and it fades out to somber music with him walking home alone. This is how you make good television.

I work in a grocery store in Stowe, Vermont. Australians came into our store and I told them how much I enjoyed this show. They had no idea what I was talking about I had to explain it to him I told him to look it up when I get back home because I really enjoy it.

I have never seen people showing quiet respect for each other as I have at a gun show. Guns everywhere and not a single foul word used, or a temper lost. Go to any church and you won't find that level of mutual respect and politeness.

This counselor just like the ones' we have in this country are one of many problems we have in Society. A man needs to defend himself or his family's Honour . those two young men Learned a very important lesson. never to disrespectful, to anybody. Another I'm certain of they will never do that again.

I'd saying beating me up for something relatively minor is a massive show of disrespect. So now, according to his own reasoning, he should face consequences for disrespecting me, and much worse ones since he showed much worse disrespect. So just beating him up is obviously not enough. I agree 100% with his explanations. If there were truly more consequences for bad behaviors there would be far fewer bad behaviors. Fairly simple cause and effect. Too many Apologists are simply cowards dressed as elites.

In prison you're taught (often brutally) that every action/word has a corresponding reaction. Treat people with respect and dignity one reaction. Treat people with disrespect and ignorance another reaction. You'll learn quickly which reaction you prefer.
People also choose who they mouth off to as well whether consciously/unconsciously. They will size their opponent and decide if its worth it. Now those who will challenge anyone is just plain stupid and is only alive because society is too understanding and actively saves them.

I'm 72, grew up in Liverpool, Green Valley area, South west Sydney, the pubs in the area were bloodhouses, but respect would get you through, it did mean though that you had to learn to fight. Dickheads and idiots didn't last long, ahh the good ol' days, when men were men and women? They were real women.
I remember a time when the Police use to belt up people for just looking at them strange or mouthing off. As kid my mate and I were chucked in the back of a divvy van for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. We shat ourselves and we were petrified on what our parents were going to do. Fortunately a 6’3 Sergeant an axe handle wide open the door , read us the riot act and told us that we had 10 seconds to get out of his sight. Best thing that ever happened to me!

It’s so true I will give you a real world example. Standing in a line waiting to be served a women is next but a guy pushes in front. The lady to scared to say something, so I step in and say “Excuse me this lady was next” Generally the bloke backs down but I’d he doesn’t I push back and say “ How about being a gentleman” as a ex veteran respect is everything most assholes when challenged are cowards and back down . If not happy to take to the next level. Ps as I get older I have less tolerance for unsocial behaviour. I guess I’m becoming a crump old man. 😅

You've got a lot of shit stewing in your head from your youth that you haven't confronted if those are your favourite two characters. Somebody fucked you good. If you make progress with your anger issues Tyrion should be your favourite character.
The counselor or whatever was disrespectful from the get-go. He was just trying to prove his point that Ray was just acting out for the sake of violence and that he revels in it. So he never tried to listen to what he was saying and kept trying to confront him but Ray was not having it so he topped it off by being sarcastic and making fun of him.
He's right. Twenties is not youths. We've turned people into candy-asses.
It's always the people that indirectly enjoy the fruits of others labors that sit there and take for granted the world that is provided for them.

Ray is right. That's how you deal with those people, the only way they understand. If someone is bullying you they won't stop until they're lying in the gutter. I don't like hitting people either. The truth is, it hurts. Punching someone hurts quite a bit actually, but I've done it and I never felt bad.

That therapist perfectly represented character who is only book smart educated person...and theoretical knowledge only has value WHEN combined with experience...that dude probably would tell kid who gets bullied to just tell the teacher about it or ignore it...xD
In my experience people who are looking for trouble are not prepared for someone who is ready for it speak softly and be prepared
He says he is all about respect...and his own therapist...isn't listening to him. The therapist disrespects him at the end.
