So I believe the Bealtes As Nature Intended was a bootleg that came out in 1986ish and it was made to look like a press kit for what let it be was supposed to look like. I'm not big into bootlegs but when I saw that record at a record show I had to pick it up! The only other bootleg I'm looking out for would be that Bealtes Black Album!

Illegal only after the Berne Convention and in the US domestically illegal after 1976 I think. I don't know about Italy's laws but in Japan copyright only seems to effect their domestic artists and not any overseas artists. That is why Shinjuku exists.
The thing I have about current vinyl bootlegs is that they must be from digital files. I doubt anyone today is making these bootlegs from the original analog tapes. If they do I would be surprised. I'd rather just get a CD bootleg these days rather than a vinyl bootleg. Old school vinyl boots is obviously a different story.
    Great collection there!

I've got a copy of Led Zeppelin IV that is on a label called Cinq Sounds Reno Nevada. The center labels on the LP are plain gray and say Crash Music Promotions. The cover is very plain, soild red with "Led Zeppelin IV" and the track listing on the front in black lettering. A message at the top says "This recording complies with all requirements of Title 17, sec. 1 and 101 United States Code. All royal ties (sic) required by federal law have been paid."

  • @Homebrew58

There are a couple different flavors of bootleg. Primarily they were/are recordings of live concerts. You had the audience taped shows with some very meticulous tapers who became famous within the community like Mike Millard. They taped and traded with other tapers.
Then there were the soundboard recordings that were taped right from the soundboard at the concert. A taper might pass the sound guy a little something-something to let him plug in or the sound guy himself might have recorded the show. A lot of Grateful Dead bootlegs originated this way.
Another source for bootleg recordings were radio broadcasts. The BBC sessions collections of a lot of artists came from such tapes as well as David Bowie's Santa Monica '72 (now an official recording). Someone along the line either at the radio station made a copy of the source they were given to air or someone recorded the broadcast off the air. If the recording was made from the source material it is often labeled "pre FM" which many collectors would prefer to own since they were not subject to the compression and processing from the transmitter.
As for the question of legality much of it in the early days was a grey area. in the US it was legal to own a bootleg tape. It was however illegal to copy or press to vinyl for the purposes of selling and illegal to sell. Many vinyl pressing plants were very small and when the owners got wind of a raid coming they could pick up and move to a new location. That is part of the reason there is very scant artwork on early bootlegs. The labels are plain with just a side number on them... or not and the covers were hand stamped. Side note: The Who Live at Leeds and Aerosmith Live Bootleg albums were made to mimic that graphic style. Copyright laws evolved since those early days and what were gray areas are now although as Dylan noted there are countries with more lax laws. But finding those early pressings from enigmatic labels such as Trademark of Quality, The Amazing Kornyfone Record Label and Wizardo Records holds as much appeal almost as the music on them.

I just found you the other day. I have crates full of old albums that I inherited from untold sources. Going through them has been one of those "I'm going to get to that one-day" projects. One day has arrived, and I am ashamed of the condition these albums are in. However, it isn't any fault of mine, with the exception of the records that belonged to my parents that I tortured as a child, which I do take "credit" for. So, the reason I was looking for someone like you and your channel is the "Big Record Project". I am digging the resources you provided with Discogs and Popsike. Do you have a code for Popsike where you get credit for people signing up? If so, hit me with it, and I will use it before I sign up for the paid subscription. Thanks.

Great show, great fun, thought I would never enjoy a show after the music (Jimi) died. Zep was out with the 3rd album acoustic set in the middle of the show and were at their best. Zep helped bring music in my life after Jimi died the day before. Love to have that boot.

It is still illegal however a lot of bands have loosened their views on them. They are more concerned about pirated material now.
Honestly it was the studio outtake stuff that really got the various recording companies in a fit.
The Beatles studio sessions , The U2 Salome aka Achtung Baby Sessions created a big splash in the water when it came out. These days boots are more accepted but pirated pressings of official albums is what they really don't like.

I remember a store in old town here in Chicago called bizarre bizzarre and buying boot leg lps the lps he showed in the box i had at one time excellent collection brings back a lot of great memories
