    There are lots of times people question what is the difference of autism vs social anxiety? Or is there really a difference between autism and anxiety.
    The fact of the matter is when it comes to autism vs special anxiety there is a huge difference and this is what that difference is.
    With anxiety, it stems from mental health issues caused by past external sources, this could be past trauma, an existing underlying mental health condition or a current trauma that produces a social anxiety disorder.
    With autism, it is a neurological developmental condition that is originated in the fusion and creation of neurological paths in the brain, that create alternative paths for how the brain interactions with communication signals.
    Autism produces similar characteristics of social anxiety but this is due to two factors.
    First difficulty in understanding social interaction and social conventions due to the communication difficulties present in autism.
    Secondly, there is a sensory processing element that is caused by over stimulation from outside sensory input, like biking in noisy busy places with lots of people and smells and lights etc.
    Please add a comment below if you have anything to add to this discussion, I’d love to know. Also please follow @TheAspieWorld for more autism content.

    What about childhood trauma caused by being rejected and mocked my others for your strange/likely autistic traits? I feel that those experiences would both give you a trauma anxiety response and could also be caused by discomfort with social communication that you've tried to mask your whole life.

      ptsd have some stuff similar to what autism has (at least seeing from outside), same as autism has some of same/similar to adhd. the difference is that trauma can be healed by therapy, emdr especially and pills, autism itself is different brain so even if u can treat anxiety and depression being autistic - u will be autistic till u die, no matter if with masking or without.

    Probably I have social anxiety, but it comes from a place of “I don’t know what to do next” “I don’t know how to socialize” or childhood trauma (not having any friends, feeling depressed and suicidal thoughts in elementary school). I always felt like I can’t actually socialize. I don’t understand it. It’s confusing if it’s just anxiety or I’m on the spectrum.

    I have diagnoses for both autism and social anxiety. I was diagnosed with social anxiety in my 20s, and after another 20 years, with autism. The years between, I went through all kinds of therapies and medications but my issues prevailed, and that's how I ended up seeking the autism diagnosis. I'm pretty clueless in social situations, and I have sensory issues, and I assume they are heavily linked with my social anxiety. The trauma that caused my anxiety is due to failing at communicating with other people, and feeling like an alien among them.

    • @Leena79
      @Leena79 2 года назад +1

      @@allthingsglam8545 I live in Finland, so the system works differently, most likely, to other countries. I have been going to psychiatrists and therapy since my early 20s in public healthcare, for social anxiety initially. The added awareness of autism in girls and women led me to research the subject on my own at first, and the more I read, the more familiar things sounded. I talked about it with my therapist and my parents, and finally with my psychiatrist. In public healthcare, the chances of getting to see the same doctor every time are slim, and the first doctor I suggested the idea of autism to wasn't one bit convinced, and basically just brushed the thought off, but a year later, the doctor was different, and she actually listened to me and directed me to an evaluation with a psychologist. I filled out tests, answered a lot of questions, they interviewed my mom, and finally, after three sessions, gave me the diagnosis. I know some people get diagnosed in the private sector, but fortunately, I didn't have to pay anything for my diagnosis - and because of my lomg history as a patient in the psychiatric clinic, they already had a lot of knowledge about my situation, and basically just connected the dots.
      Getting a diagnosis this late, I've often thought about how differently my life could have gone, had I known this in my 20s, but I'm glad I know now. Things make so much more sense, and I have more tools to avoid getting anxious in certain situations. I still have the anxiety, but it's not running wild, it has a leash most of the time.

    My understanding is that anxiety does come along side other conditions often. Like depression for example. I've heard it referred to as a disorder. Not to say that you're wrong that autism based anxiety is different. But non autism related anxiety can be pretty debilitating for some people, too.
    I get around my autism based anxiety by trying to avoid triggers for it as much as possible. 🤣

      I have multiple brain issues as well as a lot of traumatic experiences, & have been seeing Dr.'s & therapists off & on since I was about 15. This may seem silly, but I heard something on a TV show that helped me deal with the issue you're talking about. It went something like, "if I've been shot in the chest with an arrow, I don't need to know who made it, what kind of wood they used, was it an accident or not, etc.. I just need to get that arrow out...". Understanding everything about your conditions & knowing exactly how they all started and fit together might not be possible. Sometimes you have to let go of knowing why you're struggling & focus on how to heal or work around the "symptoms".

  • @waffle2529
    @waffle2529 2 года назад +75

    I think the confusion around social anxiety & autism stems from the fact that social anxiety can trick a person into thinking they have poor social skills.
    *Fix:* instead of focusing on the communication side of things, look at other ASD traits. Are you sensitive to certain textures/smells/sounds/temperatures/changes? Are you hyper or hypo empathetic? Are you a picky eater? Do you have “nervous habits” that you even do when you’re not nervous? (stims) list EVERY trait you can think of. No potential autistic trait is too insignificant.
    Focus on:
    Childhood/adult repetitive behaviours (spinning, jumping, pressing eyes, sucking hair...)
    What you would get told off for as a kid [for me it was looking at the floor all the time, avoiding eye contact]
    What started your social anxiety? Do you feel physically suppressed somehow when you are around people? (this indicates masking) [for me my social anxiety started when people started picking up on the fact I was “too blunt”, “always oversharing”, ”too loud/quiet/mumbling” “too boring/serious/intense”...etc]
    I promise this will help!

    Dan, could you do a video on dealing with someone with ADHD who can't stop interrupting or talking over others? It completely derails my train of thought when it's my turn to speak. That is a tough one because it’s inherently hard for someone with ADHD to stop it. It’s like a knee jerk reaction. And if they do manage to stop it they most likely won’t be able to follow what your saying at all because they are trying not to forget what they need to say because working memory is a huge struggle for people with ADHD. Just like you loosing your train of thought because of being constantly interrupted by someone with ADHD during conversation. It’s like that inside the mind of someone with ADHD all day long because of competing thoughts that can’t be held long.
      Interrupting is like them trying to keep up with the conversation even if they digress from the subject. Which they most likely will.
      I can imagine it is pretty draining being on the receiving end of a conversation like this. I guess when people are saying to be understanding perhaps the understanding part for you might come in the form of more research on why it’s happening. That helps me when I’m frustrated with something or someone, especially when I can’t change what’s happening or who they are. It would be cool if Dan had additional strategies to suggest though. I’d take that on board.

I’m not an expert I just know how my brain works but perhaps a set of clear rules which might look like specific times when they are assigned to speak. I know it sounds very school structured but it works for me and I it might for other nuerodivegent brains who like rules and know what to expect. Takes the stress out of trying to figure out social rules or ones struggle or self control to follow it.
      There are also ADHD and ASD associations that might have some suggestions as well. I’m sure Dan will have some great ideas as well.

    Its crazy this video was posted hours ago, as I do have social anxiety, but was always unsure about the possibility of aspergers or autism. I decided to do some research today and found your channel, which has been very helpful so thank you so, so much! I listened to a few of your videos while filling out the AQ test in fact, though I am still very indecisive about a diagnosis. You've made me more confident in wanting to get one (as my first attempt was recieved harshly by a doctor), so thank you again!

    I have had social anxiety for years, it can and has caused problems for me with friends and family alike. Have seen several You Tube videos recently on Autism and it suddenly become apparent that my anxiety and several other behaviours i have may be caused by Autism. I spoke with a councellor about my social anxiety and the first words she said were "have you considered that you may be on the spectrum?" After taking several different online Autism tests it seems this may be the case. To be honest it would explain many things in my life, a little unsure of next steps though. Do i try for an official diagnosis?if so will it help? If not would it still be possible to get potential help from the Autistic community?
    So much to think about. Anyway great channel, its been very informative and helpful, thanks.

    i always thought that i just have sociophobia since birth so i tried socialising after i went to college with this tutorials that was meant to be for people with social anxiety and there's always was that quote that the more you practice the less you fear but for me it turned out kinda opposite
    what i did is that i became highly aware that i don't know a thing about social interactions, that i started unconsciously masking and observing people hundreds of times before i could do anything by myself when someone sees me (i was even afraid to go outside of my house!wtf!)
    so i think i wasn't actually sociophobic until i started socialising, i just wasn't really interested in socialising, i figured it out before i started learning things about autism and found out every single experience in my life when i was asking myself "why am i like this?" can be explained by autism

    I am waiting on psychologist appointment for my son (almost 10, diagnosed high functioning asd) His anxiety around school and social issues is through the roof. We have been through child mental health here 3 times for counselling and many programmes for tools to help him. He’s missed 8 days of school this term with the physical symptoms of anxiety and refusing to get in car. Natural oils etc overwhelm him with the scent. Do you think medication is something to ask for or is a positive road with him being so young?

    I'd say that covers a lot dude. I actually experienced this situation myself recently, I spent half my life believing I had anxiety. I knew of my ASD well after being told I had anxiety. So age 26 when working with a counsellor she made a brave and bold comment and suggested that perhaps I'd been treating it all wrong for years and actually is all down to the ASD. for me that's been the case, I'd been doing everything right for an anxiety sufferer but not for an ASD Sufferer. Yes, I know, ASD and anxiety go hand in hand but the actual mechanism is all very different once you are aware really.
    It's very liberating when I'm getting the start of the the "shop stress anxiety", to stop for a moment and realise I'm actually just massively getting sensory overloaded, I just now try to keep my attention on myself (breathing etc) and know I'm fine. Genuinely makes a big difference understanding WHY you feel a certain way. Anxiety doesn't work in the same way at all.
    Having awareness of all my triggers when I'm out and about is definitely helpful to at least recognise it coming on

      This video was invaluable for my family at this point. I have a 14 year son who was told he had anxiety years ago, and was medicated recently. I don’t think it’s just anxiety, I think he on the Autism Spectrum. I would see him as Aspie, but he would not accept this. A previous psychologist queried ASD and his psychiatrist stated that he displays ASD differently to his younger brother (ADHD/ASD/SPD). But now, is it worth having him completely assessed or just try to explain it to him by myself. I don’t want to ‘label’ him for want of a better word. I just don’t want him to end up in his twenties, not really understanding how he thinks differently, and there’s nothing wrong with that. I also don’t want him to be on a SSRI for too long, especially if it’s not going to do anything. I’m from Sydney Australia. Thanks Dan for all your videos, I’m a huge fan!!

      Yeah, some people watch these videos on autism and are like "oh it all makes sense now", I (diagnosed with ADHD-PI and anxiety) am like "uhhhhh, I mean maybe, but not all of it?", because some of it just doesn't describe me. I know what to theoretically do in social situations, it's just that I'm either anxious or,if I let my guard down, blurting out some thought that'll make me cringe for the next decade even though nobody actually *said* anything about it-- you don't have to tell me, I knew how I came off there, I just didn't think it through, because if I think things through, the moment passes and I contribute nothing.

    I don't understand how my ADHD was so overlooked growing up. My memory and executive function suffer. I wear my keys on a lanyard to keep track of them. Stress out cuz I keep losing my phone and glasses getting ready to go to work. All my adhd work friends have been treated and they have not had to suffer job loss like in my case my memory was too bad to remember the all steps to activate a phone at the phone store. After 20 steps I couldnt remember the next 20. My memory reached capacity. They wouldn't write anything down or let me take notes to help me learn. They made me do it by memory. Its hard to converse with people with a spotty memory. Trying to remember their name or recall events. I have 100 plus coworkers. Smells, loud voices, barking dogs n certain high pitch sounds set off my anxiety. Ive never tested for autism but I seem to share a lot in common with them. Its hard for me to get courage to say hi to neighbors so then they think Im stuck up. Socializing is a nightmare. Only loud aggressive people are popular at work. Im the opposite.

    I got social anxiety probably because of how "unpredictable" social situations were and are to me and it resulting in many bad situations :/ even though I'm pretty much researching and studying human psychology and behaviour to such a degree that logically I can explain alot of social/psychological things , perceive them and act accordingly, but it doesn't come naturally so it still happens that i miss cues when they are too subtle and/or too quick and it's alot of work to maintain it....

    I’m generally bad with emotions. It’s pretty impossible for me to read any masked emotions. I can get generalized things, like crying means someone’s sad, or shouting typically means they’re angry, but hidden emotions, I don’t get at all.
    It’s very difficult for me to wxplain my own emotions and express them properly or appropriately, and it’s hard for me to explain my thought process on things. For example, if I have an essay on mood/tone from the school, where I have to explain an author’s emotions and then my own emotions, I- usually just take a 0.
    I have incredibly severe social anxiety. I was too social as a kid. I’d interrupt people to soeak, or intrude in something people are doing (for example, I would walk up to a couple having breakdast and speak with them as if I knew them). But when I hit elementary school, I was bullied, so now, I just *can’t* talk to people. It’s like walking through a brick wall. I can’t do it.
    I’ve been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, adhd, & depression. I’m being sent by my therapist to a phsycologist in June to test for autism. Should I be concerned about anything else? Or does this even sound like it may be autism?

    I loved how you explained neurodivergence! Suddenly it makes more sense and it wasn't the typical way which, I feel, puts a major focus on it being a disability. "Different, not less."

    • @RosscoAW
      @RosscoAW 2 года назад +1

      For what it's worth, neurodivergence is 104% about it being a disability. A *social* disability. We aren't less, we're different; but society and social conventions, ie others, disable us. It's a disability by virtue of regulatory and legislative failure, and, more importantly, moral failure, on the part of neurotypical society. Still very much a condition of disability, but by virtue of being different from the expected standard and norm, not lesser than everybody else that fits those norms. A la, Dan's summation in this video isn't any different from other explanations of neurodivergence, it's just less detailed/more simple than usual, because the context of this video isn't really *about* disability so much as it's about the differences between social anxiety and autistic anxiety (which is a social disability). Anyway, just me being pedantic, lmao

    I wonder how common it is for people on the spectrum (especially females) to be misdiagnosed with social anxiety... I started suspecting I had Asperger's roughly 18 years ago. I discussed it with my doctor who brushed it off. But I still felt that way and noticed several signs. I went in for an assessment 10 and 7 years ago. First time I talked to the psychologist (who was one of the only ones in the area and was NOT a specialist in autism) for about 5 minutes who said I COULDN'T have autism because I could make eye contact and could hold a conversation (hello masking! I learned from a fairly young age to act a certain way because my mom was demanding and, like, little girls can be mean!). Went back equipped with notes from assessments i had in childhood and my early teens where they thought i could have ADHD (I don't have that) and stated the possibility of high functioning autism. All of the personal testing I had done (RAADS, AQ, CAT-Q, etc...) also pointed at a high probability of being on the spectrum (I know they aren't the be-all-end-all but they can be a tool). The (same) psychologist agreed I COULD have autism but because he thought my social skills were "too developed" he dismissed it and didn't recommend any proper testing. He thought it was more likely I just had social anxiety because I stated I hated crowds, and I didn't have a lot of friends. He didn't really give me any time to really discuss things such as the communication issues I did have, my lack of understanding of certain aspects of socialization, and my sensory processing (ie: high sensitivity to noise, lights, smells, and certain textures. They were worse n childhood. Like I would absolutely freak out and cry at loud/certain noises, my mom couldn't brush my hair or dress me in many clothes because I hated the feeling. I was a very picky eater. My mom took me to doctors because of how I acted, but that never really went anywhere, so it was generally just brushed off as me being "difficult"). I never went back after that because it just felt pointless... So here I am, several years later with no solid answers.

    Okay so Im more confused actually haha. I know for a fact a have social and general anxiety partly due to family trauma growing up, infact I started getting worse from puberty onwards. I dont remember too much details from my childhood just events. What makes me question if I might be autistic is Ive always been quite and more wothdrawn than others. I had weird outburst when I wad younger in elimentry where I would occasionally slap froend on the face when I got upset which continued to adulthood. I alsom stim, rock back and fort, play with my fingers and blow inside my shirt onto my chest at times which I rarley do cause I got called out for. Im terable in social interaction and events and as an adult I dont have a best friend. I was really really bad at eye contact and small talk but in the past to years seem to be improving alot ( im 26 ). I remember doing weird quirks like writing words I see or hear with my finger repetadly in difrent font wich was impulsive and couldnt stop but I grew out of it. I hate textures of most smoothis and yoghurts and medicine you mix with water to the point I gag. And loud noises of cars hurt me physically almost give me panic attack.
    I belive that I get socials cues and can understand people well, but lately Im finding people percive me diffrent than I tought. Some said that they tought I didnt like them by the way I interect while I tought I was doing nothing wrong and being polite.
    Can this all be due to trauma and anxiety or can autisim be the issue? Sorry for long post but i've been trying to find answers for quite a while now.

    Do you see a therapist to see if you’re on the spectrum? Or what kind of specialist do you see?
    I saw a therapist maybe twice right before the pandemic. When I was younger, I saw them but I wouldn’t say much so it never went anywhere. From the one or two sessions, the therapist said I have social anxiety. But as a kid I recall I didn’t approach people because I was afraid, like I didn’t know what to say to them. It was more a person decides to approach me, they seem safe/cool, we have similar interests and so I then approach them. It was always a thing where even if I got into a conversation with someone, if we didn’t have a similar interest I didn’t know what to say and it’d be awkward and they always saw me as a weirdo. My ex when we would talk a few times meanly told me I was autistic. I told him I’m not, and he’d say that no I’m pretty sure you’re autistic. And lately I’ve been wondering now that I’ve been seeing traits explained more. Since I’ve never really understood what autism actually is.

    What do you say to people who say this: “Everyone is a little bit autistic!” I usually don’t know what to say back to them, to tell them exactly how wrong they are 🤦‍♂️ wish I could articulate it in the way you just did! Very informative and as someone who is on the spectrum (and still trying to learn about things all the time) this was a great video 👍

    While often times autism can disguise itself as social anxiety (and it very often does), the opposite can be true. I grew up with a stutter, creating a PTSD-mimicking reaction every time I spoke to someone. I thought for a long time that I was autistic, due to the social stunting I experienced during childhood, yet I realized I never experienced many of the hallmark signs of autism, like sensitivities to smells, fabrics, brightness, loud bangs, etc. The only time I experienced overwhelming anxiety and sensitivity was only I’m public or speaking to strangers. I’m not saying anyone who believes they have autism is wrong, but look at all possibilities before making assumptions, and see a therapist before drawing your own conclusions. Cheers, best wishes

    Ok so, I think I have autism, but what should I do. I don't know what to do anymore. I struggle with anxiety 24/7, I really wanna be participant in conversations and be like others, and have fun but I have so much difficulty with social situations and without ADHD medication or any form of medication that makes me more stable it seems to be unmanageable, I'm so awkward and it creates more anxiety

    At first I always thought I had social anxiety, but when I learned about autism and Asperger Syndrome, i started noticing another symptoms, like my very specific alimentary routines, my need to rotate pencils between my fingers when I am sitting, my hobbies of studying every detail of geography (every country flag, capital, outline, population, etc...), my habit of going in circles while eating or hitting one object with another to better concentrate, and my terrible social skills combined with my very above average QI

      I’m so glad it’s not just me who has some strange obsession with geography. My partner and kids cannot understand why I stuck a giant 4ft square poster map of Africa upstairs behind a door. I also have actual A5 sized African flags stuffed at the top of the wardrobe that I like to pull out and name. (I’ve hidden them so I don’t look even weirder than I already do)
      … I’m not African, not planning to go to Africa, I just must do this! It’s so calming.
      One day I’m sure one of them will find my flag stash and think WTF! 😫💀😂.

    You are so many layers of wrong about clinical anxiety and mental health in general
    1, not all anxiety and mental health conditions are caused by trauma or any other sort of adverse events. Trauma can cause problems, and moreso it can exacerbate pre existing underlying tendencies.
    2 Biological/neurological hardware is at play in pretty much all cases of any mental health disorder. In many cases there are strong brain based "hardware " reasons for the anxiety, and in many cases these are specific genetic problems a person is born with which are causing it and or at least contributing to it.
    Also, there is no behavior or ideation without the brain being involved. ALL mental health is a hardware or hardware meets functional problem ,because there is no human mind or emotion or behavior without a body being intrinsically involved.

  • @nellywolf8908
    @nellywolf8908 Год назад +2

    This is unfortunately wrong information. Anxiety also changes the neurological paths in the brain, it is not due to a chemical imbalance and is very hard to "cure".

    I think I have social anxiety both based on mental health trauma from my mom being overly controlling and critical, and fear of messing up what I want to say (dyspraxia), and also possible autism/not being good at conversation and relating to other people.
