Very clear and easy to follow, thank you! I found a wireless MIDI cable, check them out it works very well and has been pretty convenient for drumset and as always any input lag off MIDI I just Q it out later!
Thanks for this. I was bashing my head against a wall last weekend because I had no idea I had to add a "keyboard" instrument to get the signal in. I figured it out on my own, but wondered if it was the right way to go about it. This confirms it. Much appreciated.
I set my TD-17 set up, but I keep have problems where my drums trigger my synths and my midi controller triggering my drums. I need to figure out a way to stop that from happening, do you have any technique’s, because you had to of had this happen too before, right??
Did you ever tried Hertz Drums plugin? The story behind it is that I have triggers in my drum set, they go in to the DDTI module (from ddrums), then to the computer with Studio One 6. I do have signal from the triggers, but some how I have a hard time with the sound coming from Hertz which is like Ez Drummer. Sometimes I heard the sound loud if done with the mouse, but veeery low with the trigger of sometimes no sound at all. There's a 14 day trial, if you want to experiment the issue I have and figure a way out.
Thank you! I am connecting an Alexis Surge Drum Kit via USB to my Studio One. When I went into “ADD” I chose “NEW INSTRUMENT” instead of “NEW KEYBOARD.” It did not work. I went back and selected “NEW KEYBOARD” and everything worked great. Thank you for this very helpful video.

Have I been confused this whole time? Is it not possible to record MIDI using the drums, and use the same sounds that are coming from the drum kit? Do you have to use a VST for the actual sound?
I tried this same exact procedure in Studios One 5 Artist with Superior Drummer 2 and an Alesis Nitro module. No luck so far

Is it possible to use a yamaha dtx 402 kit as a midi controller to trigger ez drummer sounds and record that into studio one? Or atleast record the midi info and then change the sound into the sounds from ez drummer?

Why record as audio. You Drum controller should have a usb port. Connect the USB cable from drum controller to computer directly. now you can record as Midi, and you EZ Drummer. You can easily record into separate channels that will automatic split into tracks

Yes you can use usb. I’m simply speaking to my Roland TD11KV and I always use midi because of latency issues.

Hmmm, I’ve followed along with your instructions and Studio One has found my kit etc but when I open up EZ Drummer and click on the top right yellow thingy, my drum kit doesn’t show up 🤔Can anyone help me out please?

@@AdLaceStudios thanks so much for getting back to me. I did manage to work it out. You have to add your drum kit as a keyboard, not an instrument (go figure). Once I did that, I was able to get it working :) Thanks again!

I have an issue with my roland td1 dmk and the assigantion of some notes in Midi.
I manipulate Studio one as I need/learn.
I specify that I am on the free version of SO (studio one Prime)
I managed to record a guitar, keyboard (for violins) in Audio in the behringer UMC202HD sound card.
I am a drummer at the base and it seemed normal to me to also record the drum track in "real".
I have a Roland TD1, I tried an audio connection (mono because I didn't have the double jack), the sound is dirty in SO.
So usb wiring and there ... hassle with the MIDI.
I re-watched the tutorials, assigned the Roland module as a new instrument, opened an instrument track, sent PresenceXT into it to use the provided drum kits (no Impact module on the free version of SO), and oh miracle I managed to have very nice sound, not annoying latency by minimizing the sample blocks in the audio interface, only BIG problem, I don't know how to "re-assign"
MIDI inputs to the sound I want.
Basically my bass drum when I kick, plays the A1 note well (for example) on the presence keyboard (which is a bass drum) but my alto tom and my ride sound crazy (like alto tom for reggae rototom and ride for curly snare drum).
Do you know how to tweak and above all can we tweak?!

Thanks! This filled in some gaps for me. I've got an old Roland TD-3 kit that I wanted to try out with EZdrummer. Your video answered a lot of questions about the hookups. I found an old midi cable and was able to successfully use a Presonus Audiobox USB to connect to my PC using Studio One. Much appreciated. Next step is to actually demo EZ drummer and see how it works out.
Finally! I found a video that showed how to do this! The part I was missing was the input for the track. Thank you!!! Liked and subscribed.

Superior Drummer is a product made by Toontrack but you don’t need it to record drums. You can use your QWERTY keyboard, a midi controller etc. or you can just draw the notes in with your pen tool. You will need to load a vst instrument such as the MaiTai or Presence as a sound engine or sequencer though.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I have a Donner DED-200, its not the highest end kit, but it feels GREAT! The downside is the module is, well, what you pay for. Being able to connect this to Studio One as a midi controller is a dream!!
Is there anyway to do this without the interface? Can I not just plug my module into my computer and it recognize the module? Press record and hit the drums and it record?

In Studio One can each drum be custom edited? Example a tighter and not so wide open sound on the toms. At this time the toms are sustaining too long. Im trying to get a shorter sustain and tighter sound. Thank you great video. BTW, I'm using Steven Slates Drum modules inside Presonus.

Do you have the driver for the td11 installed on your machine? That may be the missing puzzle piece for me.

You need to make sure that your midi output settings in your drum brain are set to follow host. That might be the missing component.

my drums arent triggering midi sounds in my daw. they trigger midi when i have superior drummer open but trying to get it to do midi in my daw through ssd3 doesent work
You will need to drag that instrument onto your track
@@AdLaceStudios so I have it as an instrument track with my td-07 kit set. Then when I drag the superior drummer it replaces the td-07 it won't let me have both in the track and my drums don't trigger the midi sounds
What drum set are you using and the approximate $$$ of it if you care to share. I want to do exactly what you are doing here.

I use Roland TD11KV that I purchased new about 8 years ago for $2000.00.
I’m sure you can find a decent used kit a lot cheaper than this though.

@DiggingUpThePast - actually you will want a drum kit with a midi output if you’re planning on using 3rd party engines such as Superior Drummer or EZ Drummer.
Pretty sure a USB output will only support an audio file such as a going into your DAW.
Having said that I’m also pretty sure that all electronic kits do have midi in/out.
Your cable will be a midi to USB for connecting to your computer.

I was having a heckuva time getting this to work in Studio One (I had it going fine in Ableton, but wanted to switch things up...) Thank you for your excellent directions! I am using an Alesis Strike module on an A2E conversion kit connected to a Focusrite Scarlett 1818 via midi cable with Studio One 5 and Superior Drummer 3. It's a killer setup and now it sounds terrific!!! Thanks again - you earned my sub.
The one thing that was hanging me up (and you didn't mention in your video) is that you need to select your drum module as the controller in Studio One's dropdown menu in the upper right of the plugin. Once I found that little nugget, I was golden!

You will need to have a trigger device setup via midi to achieve this.

@@AdLaceStudios I'm in the same situation as him without EZ drummer trying to use the defaults, and even though everything is connected my kit doesn't trigger any response from the digital instrument. Swollen means buff that's how gym bros joke around with eachother.

It sure is. Just have to make sure you are selecting the brain as the source for your midi out.
I'm using a TD 30 but not Superior drummer. How do I get the instrument track to play my TD 30 back to me? Can't seem to find this info anywhere. I've set up an additional audio track for the outputs of the TD 30 so I can hear it when I play. I can see my recorded midi on the instrument track but it won trigger the TD 30 on play back.

@@AdLaceStudios Thanx for getting back to me. A little late, but I appreciate the effort. My problem was with the external instruments settings in Studio One. In order to get playback I had to change the input to "none". Otherwise I could see it but not hear it.
@@AdLaceStudios Actually I figured it out. I was thrown off by the way Studio One routes the midi signal. I was confused about the difference of "new instrument" vs, "new keyboard" in the set up menu. As it turns out, I have to record the midi as a "new instrument" but to have it play back on my MOTIF XS or on my Roland TD 30 I have to set the instrument track from "new instrument" to "none". Otherwise it will not play back my external midi instruments. Took me awhile before I accidentally figured it out. There was no mention of this in the product manual or anywhere else I looked.

Most of the tutorials and things I've read on this always assume you use a virtual instrument when playing back midi. I have some great virtual instruments but I also have some great sounds on my keyboards and e-drums that I want to make use of.

Is there any benefit to getting a high end Roland kit, say a VAD503, versus a TD11 if it's going to be a midi trigger?
The only benefit of buying a high end kit like you asked is if you plan on using the brain in a live situation. For example if you are just using it for recording in a home studio then you will most likely be using Superior Drummer or something similar to use as your tone engine in your DAW.
Having said that if you are looking for velocity and feel when you play your kit you will want to at the very least get a kit that has mesh heads in my opinion. Try to stay away from the rubber pads if you can.
The brains on these are pretty good but you will get more use out of your DAW and Superior or EZ drummer.

I never used SD3. Is it a resource hog? I'm just getting into MIDI triggering for drums and I'm trying to sort out if my older machine can handle real time processing. It's a 2013 Mac Trash can. It has a 2.7 Ghz 12 core Xeon E5 and 32 GB of 1866 Mhz DDR3. Older hardware but do you think I'll get any lag? It runs TH-u Overloud fine but I suspect triggering a full kit may be more demanding.
Perhaps a question for the SD folk?
By the way your video was enormously helpful. I also run Studio One. I would have never figured out how to configure a midi kit on my own.

Your 2013 should be ok. It looks like you have it hot-rodded out pretty good from the specs.
Yes SD3 is a resource hog. I run SD2 and EZD2 with no problems as far as resources go. I have upgraded my Mac but I ran this on my 2009 Mac for years with no issues.

Great instructions. Does this work with the free Prime version SO 8? Everything is OK until your virtual drum kitt showed on screen and mine didn't (using a Carlsbro kit) seems to be connected OK but nothing seems to respond after that. Hoping you can help. Thanks again.
