    Thanks for posting this! I just built one based off your idea. I think it will really help with my energy savings. I used to feel a little draft when sitting on the outer hearth. Not anymore!

    Well done my man! I use close cell insulation all the time and never thought to use it for a fireplace blocker. I’ve got a few scrap pieces that’ll probably fit perfect with some cutting- Thanks!

      Thank you for watching. :) I was thinking for a whole year how to plug this fireplace up with insulation but the plain insulation would look so shabby, and so would painting it I think. Diaper blanket wrap to the rescue!

      It's called Foam Backer Rod or Foam Crack Filler. Some little bits of masonry, cement, grout, whatever, were sticking out, so I smoothed things out a little. Most people probably won't have to do that. Thanks for watching. :)

    Would a canvas work for this?

    • @AytwitEngineering
      @AytwitEngineering  2 года назад

      Probably, the main thing for me was not having any noticeable wrinkles or ripples, so I chose dark stretchy fabric. Purely a visual thing.

    Does this mask the fireplace smell??

    • @AytwitEngineering
      @AytwitEngineering  3 года назад

      Yes definitely! My fireplace in particular was smelly on hot, humid days and this did the trick. Obviously the more airtight your seal, the less the fireplace smell will get through. Thanks for the question. :)

      @@AytwitEngineering can i please confirm if it was an anti draught material that you applied after putting the plank in?

    • @AytwitEngineering
      @AytwitEngineering  2 года назад

      @@olayiwoladamilola4188 It was some tubular foaming I had on hand. I think something like this: www.amazon.com/uxcell-Rubber-Weather-Diameter-Meters/dp/B07ZNH2Z8H/ref=sr_1_49_sspa?crid=36JALUUWAZF88&keywords=window%2Binsulation%2Btubing&qid=1672628534&sprefix=window%2Binsulation%2Btubing%2Caps%2C104&sr=8-49-spons&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzOU9VSTVZQTdWTUlCJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUExMDM1NDM4MlZNVVU5WVlUN1FKViZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNDY0NTU2M0ZZQUtURUlNQk81SiZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0Zl9uZXh0JmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ&th=1 It shouldn't matter shat you shove in there as long as the draught stops. Use a candle or wet your hand to detect leaks.

    Where to buy the insulation board?

    • @AytwitEngineering
      @AytwitEngineering  2 года назад

      A big box hardware store or lumber yard. In the USA Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, that kind of place. Smaller hardware stores might have it but it's hit or miss.

      Thanks for the question. If you're in America, you get can these 4 foot by 8 foot boards at Home Depot or Lowes. They're too big for my car so I cut them in half in the parking lot.

    • @AytwitEngineering
      @AytwitEngineering  10 месяцев назад +1

      It may not be useful in your home. In my home it was 4 things: (1) the fireplace was very drafty and let in a lot of cold air in the winter, (2) it smelled like rusty burnt metal, (3) it was an eyesore, and (4) we never used it anyway. Thanks for watching. :)

    Hi what type of fabric did you use?

    • @AytwitEngineering
      @AytwitEngineering  3 года назад +1

      Hmm don't know, I picked up the blanket from the thrift store for really cheap. It's definitely synthetic and a bit stretchy. Any fabric will work though. Synthetic or natural, stretchy or stiff. The only factor with the blanket material is whether it matches your room. It doesn't serve much function really besides maybe preventing a tiny bit more draft around the edges and corners. I would have gone with a less stretchy fabric in hindsight, to make the wrap cleaner and tighter.
