Not having kids was the key to it. He was divorced from his first wife when he served and the second one just died of natural causes later on. He was a WW2 vet that served in combat, probably the most stress he ever faced. But he came back home at a time before veterans couldn’t get benefits unless they’ve been shot. He just went on about his simple life in East Austin indifferent to all the changes of the city and gentrification and inflated living costs that happened the past 20 years of his life.

I remember growing up and every year we'd travel to rez to see our heroes all up on a float during the fair. Larger than life and, despite their gray hair and tired bodies, they maintained that famous Navajo sense of humor and always smiled when meeting us kids.
Now... there's so few left. It truly hurts to know that my kids (when I get around to having some) will probably never get to meet them or any WW2 veteran in person...

And as a black man that didn’t complain and worked hard, he had to take it in stride even more. They didn’t have equal rights back then and in the back of the line.
