- Tennis Footwork - 5 Drills To Improve At Home
With over 2 billion people living under lockdowns worldwide currently, many tennis players around the world are struggling to stay in shape at home. Tennis clubs are closed, gyms are closed and many countries have a very strict policy on people leaving their homes even to exercise or visit parks etc.
These five tennis footwork drills should help you stay light on your feet and help to mix up your home workout routines.
Drill One
Start off with your feet together and jump into a wide, split step position and do a double split step on the spot before returning to the starting position. Repeat for 30 seconds and then have a 30-second rest or go straight into drill two.
Drill Two
Hop and split step. Start off on your right leg and hop into a split step, then hop onto your left leg and repeat the split step and hop cycle, alternating between the right and left leg hops. Go for 30 seconds at a high intensity.
Drill Three
Fast feet in a wide base. Have your feet in your normal ready position or split step stance and sprint on the spot whilst maintaining that wide stance. Go for 30 seconds at a high pace.
Drill Four
Side shuffle steps on the spot. Go one side shuffle step to your right then one step to your left and repeat for 30 seconds at a high pace. Focus on staying low when you change direction.
Drill Five
Runners with a wide base. Start off once again in that wide athletic stance, imagine one foot is in front of a line and the other foot is behind it. Jump change and swap the feet over and repeat for 30 seconds at a high pace.
Once you complete all five drills, that would equal one set.
Go for a minimum of two sets but you could also do three, four or even five sets. It all depends on how much time you want to dedicate to these drills and how fit you are currently. Спорт
With all the craziness that's going on worldwide right now, it can be very hard to find the motivation to train and stay in shape at home. Hopefully, these five drills will help you improve your footwork at home and help you mix up your home workouts. Stay safe and stay active!

Thank you Simon. These drills are useful even if the conditions were normal. I often find myself stationary mid point and since I started these exercises I improved my shot placement a lot since I am much less late on the ball. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Yes, I am having a troubles playing a pusher. I am an offensive player but the guy I am playing against quite often is a pusher and he gets all the balls back. I tried slicing him to get him to the net but the problem is that he is really good net player. He places the balls with power and accuracy once when he is on the net. What to do here?

Great job mann!! Maybe as a tip for you.. try to relax your upper body with this drill. this will help you because while playing tennis you want tension on the legs, but your upper body to relax. So great way to do that while doing this drills😉

Great footwork exercise. Just what I need for the lockdown. Guys we have 58 days before the courts open outdoor. Indoor tennis is closed. That will be a cornerstone for my preparation. 58 days, the days are getting longer, the winter and darkness will go away. And we will play tennis with a hunger and passion like never before. Let's promise that we will play tennis with a love and dedication like never before. And the beer afterwards will taste delicuous
I love your outlook 👍
Where are you based?
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Actually I am a guy, I made that account for my grandaughter :-) I play Viennese Amateur Championship in a club team since 10 years. We are all highly tennis addicted. We play 35+, 45+ and 55+ Age groups (already uauaua). Normally without Covid19 we have a tennis drill with teacher the whole winter once a week indoors. But due to Covid all indoor sport got banned beginning of October 2020. So we didn't play for 4 months, which is a horrible long time. Mid April the outdoor clay courts will open again. We are all competitive and take tennis very serious, but after each game, we sit together, drink beer, analyze tactics and have fun. It's really a community thing. Great channel you have. Love your instructions
Great work!

Hey simon.
I was thinking of working on my shot speed(both forehand and backhand) during my summer vacations. I live in india, we are having summer over here. Is there any drills that I can do at home? If there is, could you help out?
Thank you so much. Stay safe.
Sometimes you ask what do you want us to see in the next video. I want to know different grip tightnesses on the strokes. For instance how tight should grip be for slice backhand. 3 at first, 6 at contact and 4 at follow through... please make a video on that.
Thanks for watching
I'll keep that video in mind

Thanks. And boy, these 5 drills are more intense than it looks. I did 1 set for starters. Today I am making 2. How long do you suggest the pause between the sets to be? Thanks and stay safe! ;)
I like the 90 seconds rest rule, similar to a change of ends
Nice. I will work on it and combine your drills with Alex's 2-cone drills. ;)
Im going to try doing this workout and I will do 5 sets

Sure sir

Simon I was having some trouble about my open stance forehand lately before the quarantine days of course 🙂 My right foot was always ahead of left as reflex preparing for open stance forehand. (right handed as you may guess) Could you give some advice me to correct it?
It sounds like you may be too open with your body, which would lead to that foot position.
Start off the swing by coiling the upper body properly and run to the ball with normal running steps in a side-on position.
Work on using the neutral stance more often for a while, or event the semi-open
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Thanks a lot Simon, will try it as soon as I get back to court.

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Thank you sir!!! I'm going to get promoted to the advanced batch 😁😁 And I owe it to you guys..... my single backhand especially is sooo good now... I've started hitting better than most two handers!! and my coach is really happy about me bouncing between every shot, and I saw your video on return of serve too, that enables me to take the fastest serves 😎....... and your 15 min tennis workout was pivotal in keeping my swings in action..... so once again, thanks a lot 🙏🙏🙏 Would like to meet you and Alex sabinsky if I ever come to europe 😊😊 Thanks!!!

Great drills....but jumping around at a mansion with plenty family living underneath doesn't seems wise in my case! any others advice??
If you live in a mansion, you should have a good size garden. Build a small court if you can and play with your family.

How much does the strings affect topspin?
Massively
From string type, poly vs gut etc to tension and string bed patterns
Does this drill also help with faster reflexes?
Not exactly with reflexes but with first step speed etc
6:24
Would you say it's safe to play full strength against a outer home wall?
That all depends on the house and your maximum power levels.
But in reality, you don't need to hit against a wall at full power, you can do most drills at 60%
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I didn't really listen to my parents but will do from now on. It's important to remember that strength isnt everything. Thanks!
Footwork = agility and agility is about training the brain through the body. All the exercises that you are showing allow the brain to get on cruise control. Circuits where you have to focus on performing unrepetitive movements are how you train for agility.
Sure
What shoes are those?
Nike running shoes
Top Tennis Training - Pro Tennis Lessons do you know which specifically? They look really cool!
Especially in tennis, training for agility is marginal unless you train for agility that responds to a stimulus. Randomly hearing a cue (a number from 1 to 3) and performing a specific foot drill associated with that cue is training for agility adapted for tennis. With practice, the number of drills can increase from 3 to 4, and from 4 to 5... You get the point. Avoid drills that allow the mind to get on cruise control.
What’s your channel called?
Fast feet is the most difficult one, I do not understand why!
