This is pure inspiration and motivation. This pandemic sent me up to the heaviest weight I’ve ever been in my entire life (40 years old), and have been struggling to take it off (about 25 pounds). Oddly enough, I decided to take up tennis as a form of exercise. However, it’s difficult to get people to play with me, so I don’t play nearly as often as I would like. I’m going to try this routine out, since I have a practice wall nearby and a tennis court in my HOA. Thank you for this 🙏
After I retired from a mentally stressful and sedentary job as a physician I started physical training again. Cycling hill repeats every other day and push ups and pull ups every other day on non-cycling days. Exercising every day keeps me motivated not to drop a day yet allows ample recovery. Started with legs cramps slow in lowest gear on hill number one and only 3 pull ups. Currently climbing 4 hills out of the saddle fast 3 to 4 gears higher, and with a 20 lb weighted vest doing 27 pull ups in a row and 27 foot raised push ups. Lost 12 lbs and dropped BMI from 25 (borderline overweight) to 23.2 (healthy) and gaining muscle mass. This spring, I plan on adding tennis wall work outs to build coordination, balance, and neuro-muscular connections. My wife refuses to play tennis with me after I learned forehand top spin.
When you immediately started cursing after running and then wondering why you got out of shape I cried laughing because that is LITERALLY what I’ve been doing trying to get back into my tennis form. Cursing myself for getting so out of shape. 😂
This is a good video. Some notes: - Go metric: make it 1500m runs (or even 2×800m or 4×400m track laps). - Try doing "Jimmy Connors" but in the service box. Do that until it kills. - I went for steep hill hikes as an alternative to running, to lessen impact stress on the legs & feet). Went on to trekking mountains. That includes sprints up some staircases en route. - Sand kills my ankles, so I avoid it.
this is one of my favorite videos on your channel! The editing was phenomenal and I loved how you invested a lot of time and energy into making it. The results were clear, and I felt like I learned a lot about tennis conditioning. Awesome!
That’s a very good point about how tennis players shouldn’t run too long, but rather fast. A friend of mine is running 5km several times a week for tennis and I’ve been trying to tell him he’d be better off with a mile a day or something like that. Maybe I can show him this
@@maxpowers4436 yeah good point, I wasn’t saying longer runs are bad, but they may be wasting training time which could be used more effectively targeting tennis, if of course that is your goal. It can even have some adverse effects on agility but that’s somewhat debatable and likely pretty minor
Good lord ... my respect for what you are doing here is off the charts! I think many tennis players underestimate how important doing band work is, great to see you had that in your bag of tricks.
This is exactly what I’m gonna do. Just like you, I played in college for the varsity team but getting back to it now after ~ 15 years. Footwork and getting in position for the ball is one of the main things in tennis! Great channel btw, keep it up!
Great video. Very inspiring! I have played tennis all my life and am in the 50th now, and it seems that regarding the back, the muscles, the arm etc. the rule is more and more ”use it or loose it”… A hard tennis match is like an exam for the body, and normally you have to prepare for an exam 😊. Well, because of you, I am off for my run! 😊
I was looking for this video and couldn't find it. Just saw your email notification regarding a new video and I was so lucky to get this one too! Thanks a lot Nick!😊
Thank you for sharing this helpful, motivational, inspiring video. As usual, practical recommendations with realistic expectations. This could truly help anyone, regardless of age, keep their fitness level at what is right for the individual. Got to say how much I wish we had tennis walls like those here.
Coach Nik! I really appreciate your videos. I used to play a lot of tennis as a kid with my dad but as I grew up I fell in love with the game of basketball. Now that I’m a father, I wanted to teach my kids the game of tennis and I ran across your videos. These are helping us so much. Keep up the good work!
You should call it the "Andre Agassi", not the "Tommy Haas." Andre's biggest foe to stay in shape was The Hill, pushed by Reyes. Good stuff, thanks for the tips!
8:41.... hmmmm 20 push ups... sure... XD.... but in all seriousness this is really good, I think I will start too. I like that you slowly build up the intensity over time... starting off with 1 mile runs then slowly adding more exercises, I often get carried away and start too intense and burn out, buidling up the intensity over time builds dedication and repitition which are the keys to success imo, thanks for the great video! #championsinspireothers
Best Tennis channel! Great quality videos and quality drills. I will try to implement some of this into my training. Thank you Nick! Viele Grüße aus Deutschland.
Great video coach Nik! You put your self in a hot spot by saying that you feel out of shape and being this your own channel you didn't have to. You could have recorded and released a video with any of your students showcasing a few drills to get in shape. But again you went the extra mile and that is not only entertaining and useful but also inspiring. Congrats!
Ya, all of the walls by me are very short, and doesn’t work well for practicing higher top spin that aims higher above the net. So you have to practice flatter lower shots which are less realistic nowadays. Still ok for those types of strokes.
it's because one high topspin shot and you lose the ball. not great for practicing real modern ground-strokes. flat shots would work for sure. maybe slice? I've never tried
I travel for a living and I hit every day against a wall. I just google a commercial building for lease and hit against it usually in the alley behind it.

Hi Nikola, I have seen all your videos and enjoyed them all but have never commented before. This video though is so in sink with the way I try to stay in shape being 50 years old that it made me write down few words I live in Vegas and get to play tennis at least three times a week. On my best day prolly 4.0 player. I also like to run three miles on my treadmill and have been able to finish under 24 minutes. This is great. I am coming from a similar place. in 1991 I was metro schoolboy campion in my town.. I was 16 then and started to dabble at the ITF challenger level but went nowhere.. Today I am doing something very similar to this program to regain some fitness and form on court. Not easy. But boy do I love the hill sprints and speed work for the feet using stairs and the old ladder trick as well as diagonal sprint drills. As a serve volley player, I notice these days how much harder that journey into the net is after the big serve. My wheels at 46 just aren't what they were at 20. Still, I love the training process and feel so much better. I need to drop another couple kg - this is all about diet so time to lay off sugar and fat for 6 weeks - and I'll be very happy and beating most guys half my age at the local club this Aussie summer. One other important thing in the 40s are the rest days to let the body recover and get ready for the next session of set of matches. Thanks again for the inspiring video. Stay fit and enjoy your tennis
Hi Nicola, Great to see your transformation! Cheers!!! Can you also tell us about the diet you follow while you are training intensively? Thanks for sharing your experience!
Inspiring. Finished vid and jumped on the family elliptical for the first time…and yes, we have owned it for YEARS! Skill can beat fitness, but I don’t ever want to lose because I ran out of gas!
Started today with 1/4 mile walk, 1 mile run, 1/4 mile walk. 4 Jimmy Connor’s. Serve practice. 6 ball transports, more serving, 6 45 sec sprints. Then finished with the wall.
Nik could you please add to the description a weekly-daily routine and time for each type of training? Thanks! this is one of the best videos so far, can't stop watching it
Hi David Thank you I wasn’t too clear in the video but running the mile and hitting the wall should be a daily thing and then add 3 times per week of strength/speed training with days of rest in-between
Amazing, tons of cardio and some bodyweight workout done. But strength training is important too for the speed, agility and explosiveness & prevent injuries
A few pointers, I'd like to give. It's okay, we are all learning. I've been a serious runner for the last 15 years and a tennis player for the last 34 years. What I can tell you from my experience is that long distance running definitely has its place in tennis training. In tennis, you need both endurance and speed. If you only try to run 1 mile as fast as you can you won't be gaining any endurance from that, or not what you will need for 3+ hour tennis matches. When I was my fittest I could run marathons under 3 hours which is 6'52/mile for 26 straight miles. I can tell you that I would never ever tire in a tennis match at that time. I would NEVER lose a tennis match because of my fitness. I could actually go run a 15km run before a tennis match and still win the match against an opponent that was at my level. I also played D1 college tennis in the USA and back then my fitness was not nearly as good as when I stopped playing college tennis. The fact is that you need to mix up your runs and not only practice speed but also do longer slower runs. To make things simple, I would just say that you need to run one interval session a week (could be a fartlek, intervals (200-400-1k repeats), or a tempo run) and the rest of the runs be 8 to however many miles or km you have time to run. In the off season, you can obviously run every day or mix it up with some biking to avoid putting too much stress on your body. When playing tennis on a regular basis, I wouldn't run too much because it can actually cause some injuries with the impact, especially on hardcourts. Mix up cycling and running with at least one interval session to work on speed and the rest of the sessions being endurance sessions (30 min up to 2hrs staying under 70% of maximum heart rate.)
Hey, that's pretty great, good job! Can you make a video about diets? what do you recommend for recreational tennis players when it comes to what/how much to eat? Thanks a lot!
Very simple obviously no processed food or junk food. Fruits and vegetables that are low glycemic which allow the slow release of insulin into the bloodstream. Also lean sources of protein as well.
Great job putting in the work!! And I appreciate that you are showing players what they can do on their own. I agree that long distance running shouldn’t be a mainstay of training for tennis players, however I do believe that occasionally doing a long distance run is vital for the mental toughness side of tennis (replicating a tough 3 setter). It can help give you a mental edge over your opponent. Thanks and great job!

Inspirational 👍👏🙏 and informative 🎾👍
Nice video and shape Nikola. I like your new video montage style. What should tennis player eat to be in a better shape?
Very simple obviously no processed food or junk food. Fruits and vegetables that are low glycemic which allow the slow release of insulin into the bloodstream. Also lean sources of protein as well.
I’ll make a separate video on tennis nutrition
Gotta do this in 4 weeks. Let's hope for the best.
After this no one can beat you i mean wth this was all killer workouts tough. Thank. U
Thank you Turbo! many ppl can beat me but no one can beat the my desire to improve 🙏
Seriously love this video, very motivational!!
Very nice content ❤❤❤ thanks Nick!
