  • Forrest Gump: Just felt like running
What’s happening in this Forrest Gump movie clip?
Sitting on a bench waiting for his bus, Forrest (Tom Hanks) tells the story of how he ran for years through the states of America just because he felt like it.
Rent or buy Forrest Gump here: amzn.to/3g9uHAE
What’s the movie Forrest Gump about?
Stupid is as stupid does, says Forrest Gump (played by Tom Hanks in an Oscar-winning performance) as he discusses his relative level of intelligence with a stranger while waiting for a bus. Despite his sub-normal IQ, Gump leads a truly charmed life, with a ringside seat for many of the most memorable events of the second half of the 20th century. Entirely without trying, Forrest teaches Elvis Presley to dance, becomes a football star, meets John F. Kennedy, serves with honor in Vietnam, meets Lyndon Johnson, speaks at an anti-war rally at the Washington Monument, hangs out with the Yippies, defeats the Chinese national team in table tennis, meets Richard Nixon, discovers the break-in at the Watergate, opens a profitable shrimping business, becomes an original investor in Apple Computers, and decides to run back and forth across the country for several years. Meanwhile, as the remarkable parade of his life goes by, Forrest never forgets Jenny (Robin Wright Penn), the girl he loved as a boy, who makes her own journey through the turbulence of the 1960s and 1970s that is far more troubled than the path Forrest happens upon. Featured alongside Tom Hanks are Sally Field as Forrest's mother, Gary Sinise as his commanding officer in Vietnam, Mykelti Williamson as his ill-fated Army buddy who is familiar with every recipe that involves shrimp, and the special effects artists whose digital magic place Forrest amidst a remarkable array of historical events and people.

For more people than I would've thought possible, it often comes down to something as simple as that. For one endurance event, a guy said the only thing that kept him going to the end was just putting one foot in front of the other. For the other guys in his team, it was as simple as "if he can keep going, then so can I". If it works for you, then it works.

The one thing that always bothered me about this scene is around 2:58 when the news anchor refers to Forrest as a gardener. He’s a CEO of a major fortune 500 company with Bubba Gump, a war hero, and former all american football athlete, you’d think any half decent newscast could figure this out.

Oh my gosh how stupid can you get lol? ITS A MOVIE!??? He didn't ACTUALLY RUN the WHOLE DISTANCE, are you actually an idiot or something!? Do you honestly think Tom Hanks would have been able make it across America all four times if he was in a dead sprint the entire duration? It's fucking impossible!
Its a simple matter of conservation stamina over distance, dead running for that kind of distance is impossible for a build like Hanks, even without proper training. Hanks clearly used some type of alternating running technique in order to make that kind of distance during the shooting timeframes of the movie. Look at 1:45, my man is clearly jogging up that pier. Its obviously just a movie, I get it, but for people to honestly believe Hanks ran the entire width of the USA without proper endurance training and coaches are actually complete morons, I swear.

I'd like to think that this running phase of his was him venting out everything. He has settled, he made it. He survived a war, a hurricane, lived through so many eventful parts of his life. Jenny just left him. His mom passed away. Part of him feels as empty as the house he has. Part of him still felt... unfulfilled.
So he got up and ran. He ran, like when he did when he broke out of his leg braces. It was what gave him freedom. It was the event that started his path in life. And he ran. Alone with his thoughts, witnessing America. Reflecting on his life. On the people he met. On his accomplishments. He didn't fully understand everything, but he knows hes been through a lot.
That's my take on this. I'm probably wrong, but that's how I've always viewed this. He's finally clearing his head after everything we bore witness to in his life.

He entered a new phase on his journey. His leg braces, them braking away, his football cleats, his army boots, they find a boot when trying to catch shrimp and then the storm came, his running shoes. And then there is Lt. Dan's magic legs.

Forrest running is such a superior narrative. You have instant movement for the camera and the character has this task we can all relate to. Why he was running? He was running for Jenny and himself. He was trying to reconcile his life in how it didn't amount to much under his definition. He wanted to provide and learn to be brave and take risks and he did all that but it still didn't bring Jenny to him. He didn't know how and we all relate to this kind of feeling of disillusionment. Then you get to the ending in what Jenny actually does, making decisions wo consent then leaving him holding the bag. Such a warm feeling.
