This video has finally helped me understand bur formation and identifying it by feel. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Thanks for this guidance. I can’t seem to get past “kinda sharp”. I’m using a Smith DCS4 Diamond Combo stick and a 1000/6000 whetstone. I keep a good 25 degree angle, but I can’t seem to develop a burr. I wonder if I’m stopping too early?

That has happened to me as well, but what I have found that some knifes get a bur pretty quickly, but others don't seem to get that bur... What I realized is that some blades are made of harder steel, and with those blades, you have to stay sharpening longer in order to get that bur, so continue sharpening until that bur appears, and like I say, some blades will require that you spend much more time on them to get that bur to form. Then once you have successfully created that bur on both sides, move to a finer grain stone, and do the same thing with each stone in the progression. Then at the end of all your stones, use the strop to finish it off to be able to shave a hair like he did in this video. With some steels, it just takes longer and more patience to get the bur.

@@Outside-In. Thanks so much for your response and encouragement. I added a 600/800 to rough up each side of the S30V Griptillian steel before using the 1000/6000. The other knives I have weren’t nearly as stubborn. I had to commit to more than an hour with all stone sides combined, but I got my burr. It’s holding up well too.

@@pedromiguel3227 Happy to hear that you have achieved your goal. After leaving the comment, I went and watched another video on the subject (because I love to learn) and realized, I should have mentioned trying a coarser stone to first achieve a bur to start. But glad you thought of that on your own.
Now that you have achieved your goal however, you could move up the sharpness by going finer on grit to say 6000, but the higher you go with your stones, the harder it is going to get to feel a bur, because the bur will still get there, but it will be on a microscopic level, so that is when I would just go say 10 strokes on each side, then 8 strokes on each side, then 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Then that is when you could use your stropping method and go say 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 on each side. BUT here is where the true problem is going to happen... Just be careful, because as you are moving your knife through the air (after you have sharpened it this way), you could actually split the time continuum, and slice into an alternate reality LOL... - Just sayin`

Yea, I understand. I’ve gotten some knives that weren’t ground great to start and they can be fixed, but it can take some decent effort to get them where they are supposed to be.
You can just contact the company and they’ll usually regrind it for you if you haven’t sharpened it.

This is where a ceramic rod works so well.
1 or 2 swipes and the bur is usually gone.
Rinse and repeat. And who wants that wire
edge gauging into your nice Shapton Pro
Glass stone? I'm a picky old bastard.
