Hi Donna, I had the pleasure of meeting you, Elise Winters and many of the other Polymer Clay Pioneers at the New York Polymer Clay Guild classes at the Fashion Institute Of Technology back in the 90's. I'm so glad to see you're still teaching us new tricks, and I wish the Guild still had in person classes vs "Zoom" meetings. BTW, I actually still have some canes and veneers from back then, as well as my first Mokume Gane pieces from a class Elise taught. I always wondered how she did those beautiful, sinuous and sculptural pieces of wearable art, it's too bad there is no record of how she did it. I know she must be smiling down at you for making this video, and keeping her work alive in our hearts. Thank you for all your beautiful and innovative work, and all you've done for PC over the years, it is appreciated!!!
Oh, my, FIT! Well I remember those days. I had just started teaching…wow. Elise was such a wonderful person, she did so much for our medium. I wish her innovations were not lost. It happens, and it’s really a shame. I think I know basically how she did it but the scale of her work was amazing. Lol. I could make a mini Elise! Well, take care of yourself! Hugs, D
I feel we can all learn from each other no matter how much experience we have or how long we have been in business. I'm all for sharing all of my knowledge and experience. I learn things just from teaching newbies! And I love that!
It was wonderful to hear you mention Nancy Banks. I was a member of the South Bay Polymer Clay guild with Nancy when we lost her very suddenly (I can’t remember exactly when but definitely pre-Covid). She was a joy and an inspiration and always willing to share.
I loved Nancy. She was a hoot. LOL, we used to smoke together! Don't smoke now but many conversations happened next to dumpsters in the freezing cold! Her work with the foils was really innovative stuff. She was the one. Nancy Banks was one in a million. Hugs, D
Great tutorial, Donna! In general Metallic Acrylic Paints are much Stretchier...if that's a word...lol. The regular "opaque" colors will just work better. Like you said I don't know what they have to put in the Metallics that's not in the Opaque colors but in my experience the Metallics just don't crackle as well on their own. I've had my YT Channel for many years & have done many types of Crackle but your explanations are right on point. ❤
Donna, you remain one of my favorite teachers and people! This technique has my wheels spinning with so many variations and ideas. My Mochi magnet from the last Clayathon is still on my bedside lamp and I think of you fondly when I see it.
You are adorable 😊 Somehow, you showed up on my feed. I am not even a clay artist. I just thought I would watch the beginning and check it out real quick. Your personality and teaching style drew me right in, and I watched the whole video 😂 You truly talented ❤
Brava Ms. Donna!👏🏾👏🏾🙌🏾🎉🎉. Another awesome video and technique! Your beads turned out fantastic! Thank you for taking the time to go through all of the details of your experiment so we know what to expect with each of the mediums. Off I go to try this covering unfinished wooden beads for my macrame projects. This should be interesting. Lots of love to you, dear lady🥰🥰🤗🌹 (and your furry friends too🐱🐶🥰🥰)
Great comparisons! I love how your paint diamonds turn relative to each other. I have a memory of a tutorial for that Elise Winters style from years ago. It involved a texture plate with very low relief. (An earlier poster mentioned this.) I've been trying to remember where I saw it and whether the texture was applied before or after the paint...no dice. It was genius. The high spots had more clay, so the areas spread differently and the paint broke to pattern when the clay was flattened with the pasta machine.
I really like the comparisons. This was very useful information! The acrylic one was really interesting and it’s nice to know the cheaper stuff is better! ❤
My pleasure, Barb! I think the tubed paint does give you more working time, though, I think the binder does that, too! Most of the time it won't matter, just if you're taking days to do a thing! Hugs, D
Can't say this enough but you make my week ❤ I'm so happy to se end lern from you but I aways miss your live😊 this one seems to be a technique for so many tings. 🎉thanks for all you do for the community not hiding what you know and learn along the way. I would love to see you join insiders om blue bottle tree. I think you know alot of people there. We might have talked about you from time to time ❤ all good things. I love putting on a long tutorial with you 💕
I am so glad you enjoy! I don't know much about Blue Bottle Tree but I can't keep up here kid!...I'm trying but I seem to have maxed out my time! I fall behind in answering you guys. I will try to be better. Hugs, D
Hi Donna! Thank u so much for the video! I love the way u do comparisons and the detail to which u use to explain the process. I also love how u recognize artist that used polymer clay processes in the past. Your snake skin bead was spectacular! I know u mentioned coloring some pieces with alcohol inks and I agree it is a terrible mess most of the time. There r little dobbers that come with alcohol inks sometimes. I wonder how using the dobbers to apply chalk pastels would work on clay. Of course it would have to be sealed in some way but at least u could perhaps have more color options with less mess! Thank u again for the video and I’m eagerly awaiting the next!❤
I have been wanting to learn this technique for ages. Artist Jana Hannerova does beautiful pieces with what appears to be the controlled crackle. Thank you.
Hey Donna! Enjoyed seeing your clay experiment progressions & hearing your thoughts, ideas, and explanations! Your diagonal cut beads are giving dragon egg vibes! 🐲 I have some small sharp leather cutters in circles, squares, etc - will have to give it a go & see what cool patterns emerge! Yay, for science! Thanks, Donna!
I am so glad that you finally put on your big girl pants and figured it out! lol You're awesome Donna. Not only do I learn things from you every tutorial, I get to laugh with you as well.
I am sometimes very good at avoidance...I was very good at avoiding this whole topic! I'm thankful for you guys who really are the reason I faced up to it! Hugs, D
I think that the liquitex (from my experience) would be prone to stretching before cracking. I wonder how something like a chalk type paint would react.
I thank you for your experiment! Although, at first I couldn't follow the 'why' of it...? But as you have devoted your energy to the polymer clay media I decided to just take a ride with you! As usual, your thorough ways have brought to light a very interesting phenomenon! Actually might spend a little time thinking about these things today... and hopefully making a couple beads!😊 TTFN 42:41
Add a little water to the liquitex gold paint. I've added as much as 30% water by volume/weight and not had acrylic paint chip. If you think it out some it may crackle better. And yes one of the differences between craft paint (Americana) and art paint are the binders in them.
I love this technique, the silver bead is stunning. I want to join your master class but I have not been able to find it. Could you please send me a link? Thank you so much ❤
Hi Christine! I don't have a master class but I do have a member's classroom. It's a subscription on youtube but you can join and exit on a monthly basis if you'd like. Most stick around and it's not expensive. You choose your level, all levels get the same thing, If you're still interested, here's the link, kid: ruclips.net/channel/UCeRlb3K2k-_b1QAGYDuW1IQjoin
Hallo Donna ! Some problem happened with my Paypalaccount so that I lost my memebership and all the membershipvideos ! Can I see them again when the problem is solved ! Beacuse I love them ! As this new one ! I have had bad experience with acrylic paint on polymer clay. I used Liquitex on a bead and cured it but the paint remained sticky for 6 months ! And on another one I had made an impression and painted the low parts and after baking I needed to sand on the uprised parts and then I wanted to wash of the dust from the sanding and used a little brusch ( for fingers ) to clean away the dust - and the paint came of very easily ! What a disappointment ! It was not Kato-clay, maybe that´s why !
they even from color to color! Solveig, no worries, the tutes will always be there, they don't leave. Now, it's all chemistry, kid. I know Elise used a paint with extremely long cure time - it did eventually dry but it retained its sticky for a long time. Are you reading the members fb page because I will go there and ask everyone to include the clay they use and the paint brand. That will help everyone. Hugs, D
Mmmm we can see all the details on the AAA card, I hope you have some way to keep it secure still. Chris Taylor on his Nerys 3D printing channel has a video on this for keys being able to be 3d printed from an image. Fyi. Laurie. NZ.
So in theory say if you ran a textured roller over the paint instead of cutting it with a blade it should also be able to crackle into that shape? If so that could open up so many different designs to be utilised.
Hi Janet! I have. Foredom foot pedal! Some people find their sewing machine pedals work and I have a friend who uses this Christmas tree light ball thingy. I have to find THAT. ❤️
Hold on. Do you use authentic leaf? Real metal? We muggles use synthetic leaf, which is made of some kind of plastic and bonds well to polymer clay. And it’s cheap.
I just tried this and could NOT get it to work :( I am using super pigmented metallics (Decoart Extreme Sheen) and applying very thinly and waiting for them to dry. These metallics are so stretchy. Everytime I ran them through the pasta machine they would NOT adhere to the clay and I ended up with paint on my rollers. It was even hard to do the cuts. I also tried to do it with metal leaf and when I ran it through the pasta machine the line cuts did not separate into nice little squares. They just all blended back together again and all the cuts vanished. I have no clue lol.
Hello. I am on day 3 of trying to watch your video. We have been busy. Anyway, you used HTV? Now there is a whole host of possibilities. I like that. :) :) :)
Hi D I hope you are well. I recently sent you an email and a text message but for whatever reason I didn't get a reply. Please give me prove of life *lol* Your channel gets better every day, btw ;)
Yeah! You are the G.O.A.T. of polymer clay. So happy to watch another of your tutorials.
I love goats! Big hugs, D

The controlled crackle is brilliant!
glad you like it! It's simple but effective, I think. Hugs, D
Excellent and useful tutorial. We will use these advice when we will make the crack technique, for sure. Thank you for your dedication Donna ❤❤❤❤
thank you, Sar! Hugs, D

Hi Deanna! Clayathon was great. It’s got a new name, right? I hope it comes back. Hugs, D
Awesome!!! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us!!! 🙏❤

Had to be texture first! I do the same with my overprinting technique! Good tech. Thanks for sharing!
Love this…thank you! I have worked with acrylic paint/clay and enjoyed it but this is new to me. I really appreciate you, Donna! Thank you so much!❤️
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I truly appreciate you.❤

Sadly, paint formulas vary between brands and within brands. The only way to be 100% sure that any given paint will bond is to make test pieces.
they even from color to color! Solveig, no worries, the tutes will always be there, they don't leave. Now, it's all chemistry, kid. The grey looks like Salmon skin ☺️
Nom. I ate salmon tonight Sal! 😊❤️
So in theory say if you ran a textured roller over the paint instead of cutting it with a blade it should also be able to crackle into that shape? If so that could open up so many different designs to be utilised.
It pushes the paint down into the texture. You can still see the pattern! 😊
Donna when you were using the acrylic paint on clay-did you rotate the edge you fed into pasta machine? Or does it matter?
It does matter! This Sunday’s class has a demo, kid. Can you wait? It should clear that up. Hugs!❤️
Hey Donna I am getting the Atlas wellness 150 with motor where did you get your foot pedal may I ask??

Try the tech with regular non metallic paint and see…
