Right after the Vietnam War ended, I found helmets with writing on the helmet covers. One had the names of all the landing zones the previous owner was at.

Back in the day we used G.I. window cleaner (Windex), to wet the cover down on the helmet and form it to the helmet. One note on graffiti on the camo covers, they were a DX item in Unit Supply. If your supply sergeant was an ass he might refer you to the 1SG for some sh*t burning detail if you some FTA crap on it. After you finished you could go DX your cover. lol!

Normally with the older and more used covers you don’t have to wet them since they been in helmets before.

Where did you get your head strap at if you don't mind me asking. I've got an old helmet and would like to restore the band

If you are talking about the headband, I just bought a nos one on ebay. It was in a multiple item listing so there might still be more. They were all dated 72 or 73
