Back around the year 2000 my return trip from work consisted of jogging from midtown Manhattan, across the Brooklyn bridge, to DeKalb Ave subway station, where I'd then ride to Sheepshead Bay. This was all done after midnight. No one ever bothered me, either. (It was really quite nice.)

Hei Aleksi! I moved to Finland past June and, before moving here, I was very hesitant. Before making the decision to move, I watched our videos and helped me a lot to understand on what to prepare (I come from Spain, and life is pretty different down there!), so I'd like to thank you for that!
Anyhow, one year after, I'm finishing my first year of my PhD in Aalto University, I have an amazing group of friends and a woderful Finnish girlfriend. I'd recommend to everybody planning on moving here (specially Helsinki) to do so in the beggining of the summer, as meeting people then is quite easy because of the good weather and also multiple free events are organized weekly around the city! :D

Debt to GDP ratio for Finland is actually quite good. Although the figure of €138Bn sounds like a lot it’s actually less than 60%. It’s lower than most European countries including France, Germany, the Uk and Austria.
The problem in Finland is that debt and austerity are fetishised by politicians to hammer whoever runs the country when in fact Finnish debt levels are actually quite low by international standards.
Imagine if all your debts including your mortgage, car payments, personal loans etc amounted to less than 60% of your salary, I’d say you’d be doing all right.

I visited Tampere last March for two days. The airport was abandoned. When I landed, it seemed like there was nobody else waiting for the bus to take me to Tampere Dream Hostel. I went to the Lenin Museum and Werstas industrial museum. One display I remember was a college dormitory in 1992. I also visited a library there and a public sauna. I tried to jump into the pool after being in the hot sauna, but it was like hitting a block of ice. I also visited a K market and an S market. I tried villi because that was something I don't see in the US. I ordered a cup of tea at a shopping center across from the hostel I was staying in. I told the lady behind the counter that I don't understand Finnish. I thought "Ma on" was a short way to say "Mina olen..." but I was wrong. The woman behind the counter did not understand me until I said Mina olen... I also visited University of Tampere while seeing the city.

Unfortunately yes, more the further north you go due to the abundant swampland which is also funnily enough where the country's name comes from (suomi (old Finnish) > suomaa, lit. Swamp land/country)
A few years ago I was driving home to Rovaniemi through Ranua, an area littered with large swamps, and there were enough mosquitoes, midges and other such bugs flying around to form what looked like dust devils on the road. Had to stop every fifteen minutes or so to wipe my windshield by hand just to see where I was going due to the damn thing getting so caked up in bug corpses. That said, that summer was a bit of an exception due to heavy snowfall in the winter followed by high temperatures in the summer, thus leading to a lot of warm stagnant water pooled up all over the place. You do still want to carry some insect repellant if you're planning on heading out to the woods during summertime, but for the most of the year you don't really need to worry about the bloodsuckers thanks to the cold weather.

I know a few people in employment circles and the ageism issue is a problem but due to labour shortages it’s kinda sorting itself out. That said, it’s a problem everywhere.
It all depends on the sector of course. I’m daily life, I’d say people are pretty good to the elderly here. No worse than anywhere else really.

I’m thinking about returning to Finland. I have been living in Australia since 1978.I came here as an eight year old with my parents. TBH I have never fitted in. People talk shit, are ignorant and it’s becoming like a police state. Protesting is illegal and it is becoming extremely expensive. One bedroom unit in Sydney costs applied 300€ a week.

    • @bakeraus

I live in Finland as a Australian and you think you are controlled in Oz, it's a whole other level here. EVERYTHING is regulated alcholo, bank account, the colour you can paint your house, you walk on the wrong side of the footpath people lose their shit, the current Finnish government is trying to make strikes illegal and you can be fined. Some people in Finland are extremely ignorant, racism, xenophoba and descrimination is everywhere and here it's next level. The housing in Australia is a disgrace and need to be fixed.

What you said in first 5 sec is very true and people should only pay attention to those words , b'cos after the summer is over and then comes the darkness and cold you just wish you never known the place, only born Finn can love their country b'cos they never know how to live elsewhere as they never can change their ways, this is no hate but just the truth as a Finn would prefer. I never seen someone who have to promote their country so people can come and live, this message seems to be sponsor by state as they are running out of people who can live in such a heavenly place. I know many Finns who have chosen to live elsewhere if they able to afford [Sunnier place] . Sure there are high taxes but you do get most back IF you have kids. They'll look after you if you have invested your entire life paying for it and you can demand for sure. But in my eyes it make you lazy as you only do just enough to live and pay your fair share of taxes , there is no real incentive to excel or be a entrepreneur as you pay more taxes if you earn more. If you are immigrant then getting a Finn passport is next to impossible as they Finnish language is very hard to crack especially if you only started to learn this next to impossible language in your 40s. That maternity kit is tempting and Finns can't stop boasting about it but in the bigger scheme to things this is high price to pay , think about depression and metal illness that comes with lack of sunlight. Sure get a Solar lamp if you going to live there.
