This one was sooo much easier, I tried to install the 23.04 version, but it didn’t connect to the internet, it took a long time, like hours hahah, but this one was not difficult at all. Thank you for making these videos.
This worked great, thank you. I did have problems with the sound, but a change in the settings for the sound source fixed it. For people that are going to try this, follow all the steps listed. Miss one, and you can have issues. One thing I did notice, is a pretty high power draw when running the VM. Not enough to warm up the MacBook, but definitely would cut battery life by a significant amount, should you be running on the battery.

Either Firefox works or the system apps. If we use XORG, system apps like terminal, files, and settings don't work; if wayland is used, firefox does not. Wasted three hours figuring this out the hard way. Tried both direct installation and the server installation method. This is for M1 Pro Macbook on Venture 13.1. This is the best video I have seen so far, very clear and easy to follow. However, once I get into Ubuntu the desktop appears and everything but nothing works. When I click on anything to run it nothing happens, or the name of the application appears in the menu bar but no window on the screen. An as another user said, the Ubuntu installer just comes up with a black screen and again nothing happens. In Virtualbox I can’t even get as far as installing it at all let alone getting as far as the desktop. Not sure what to do now, looks like virtualisation is not for me.

Hey, I've faced the same problem. Apparently my UTM Machine settings were set to QEMU 7.2 ARM Virtual Machine, but I changed it to QEMU 7.0 ARM Virtual Machine (as in the video) before running the VM (Settings --> System) and it worked!

I was facing the same issue and the problem seems to be the hardware OpenGL acceleration. Try setting up the VM again, but without enabling hardware OpenGL acceleration - worked for me. Hopefully this will solve the issue! :)

There is a fix, its and issue with the graphics Card emulated. Go to your VM Setting -> Display. Then Change Emulated Display Card to virtio-ramfb or virtio-gpu-pci (not the GPU supported one)

100% you can create as many VMS as you want, but it costs more RAM, Storage and CPU Cores. You can install Windows by creating one VM, and the same goes with Ubuntu. You can also run parallelly at the same time but make sure heavy programs are running on macOS except UTM/

Personally I haven't experienced any battery draining issues. UTM is simply the best and keeping the VMs to use less battery.

This is the same for me - have tried rebooting and upping the CPU and memory too, but get a black screen hanging when I try and run the installer

Virtual Box on M1 is like roller coster. Use UTM
Inside UTM I was able to run Ubuntu but I can't install it since black window stays on and nothing appears when I perform the step at 5:12

you probably downloaded amd64 iso follow the download process of Ubuntu as specified

I fixed it: Delete current vm, create a new one and follow all the same steps, except enable apple virtualization.

You have to save the .iso file not in cloud drives just in the pc storage. I maid the same mistake.
