As soon as I saw the trailer for this movie, I was like, “Oh, Sony is just trying to make another stupid reboot of Spider-Man attempting to make themselves relevant again.” Then, I watched it, and I was pleasantly blown away. It was an absolute blast from start to finish and a work of art. Can’t wait for the sequel!
People always use the term “comic book movies” but I’d never thought it could be taken so literally until this film came out. Spider-Verse is a master class in animation.
Watched the second movie twice, and it is so beautiful. Gwen’s universe constantly changes colour palletes and is less of a comic and more of a painting with literal brush strokes!
her story almost made me cry both times, i was on the verge of tears. not only because im currently relating to it on a personal level but its the most beautiful form of portraying emotion ive seen. the entire screen was filled with brush strokes across an imax theater screen. its so risky, ingenious, and pays off.
@@myweirdsecondchannelwithap9070 Spiderman 2 is a maybe, but it does not beat out no way home. thats movie is amazing, most fun ive had at a theater probably ever. but the first act of no way home is not great at all.
Into the Spiderverse is such a beautiful movie. They also, I think, lowered the frames per second on certain parts, which allowed for some of the jerkier movements that are a huge part of the style.
Spiderverse and Arcane are the only 2 animated work I can think of that really fit the idea of "every frame a painting" and it's amazing how they achieve it in different ways.
I find it interesting that in the examples you provided of hatching and half-toning "substituting" traditional lighting, there is also clear use of that traditional lighting. Particularly the latter; there are clear gradients on Miles' face, and the spider itself looks more like a digital painting than a from a comic book. I wonder if they sacrificed a complete adherence to the comic book look in order to increase readability. That'd be amicable, in my opinion.
All I know is experimental films are centered in an objective, deadlines are not the primary focus, and because of it we've gotten such gems, like this movie for example, Avatar, X. They're released only when they're finished and are better for it. Marvel is having these deadlines from Disney and it shows in several aspects of the several movies they've pushed out in recent times. I'm glad Marvel/Disney isn't the only one working on Spider-verse 2 so it's not rushed and ruined by deadlines like so many other movies.
It’s a revolutionary movie that I’m glad is inspiring other movies to do the same and tear through what was previously established to make something unique
The Spider Verse art style is cartoony and comic-like. It’s insanely unique and experimental. Not to say that there aren’t other movies with comic like traits, but to say that this is one of the first of its kind. It’s wacky, crazy, insane and I love it. It also captures the lighting and affects, it really shows just how much quality they put into this movie. They even added 4K graphics and it’s amazing.
This is what I was trying to tell everyone when I first heard about this movie. The amount of love put into this movie is insane and I want everyone to know it
I find it so interesting how each universe has a really strong vibe to it and hopefully we’ll get to see more of them with the new movie Also, favorite spider is Noir, I just love the 60’s detective vibe
I want to see even more movies in this art style, it's amazing. I'd even say it's the best looking animated movie ever. I don't understand why people used to want to make hyper-realistic animated movies when that already exists in real-life movies. Animation is meant to be stylistic, and when you do it correctly you get a masterpiece like this.
I already knew this movie was revolutionary and spectacular but this video helped me to really understand why it is so, on a technical level. Thank you so much!
I think the measure of a strong visual style is when you can grab a screenshot from literally any point in the film's runtime and have it be instantly recognisable.
The clips they showed at Annecy Film Festival were amazing! They were able to show us 3 different clips (completed and still in progress) and announce the title for the 3rd film. I love where the story is going and how they explore it. Miles really grows as spider-man and as a teen
This movie gets me more and more excited and fascinated every time I find a video like this!!!!! Like the part about focal points-that was so lit! I thought they added in misprint color leaks to confuse people but nooooooo it’s a live acting COMIC BOOK, it needs this!
Just saw across the spider verse and it is easily one of the best films I’ve seen in awhile. It is a must watch and I can see this trilogy being one of my favorite
the thing about spiderverse is that it helped popularise different animations, It allowed to experiment and take the risks and be innovative and make art, it doesnt have to be perfect, it doesnt have to be extremely releastic, it Just has to make us Feel It
just saw across the spiderverse a couple days ago and it absolutely lived up to my expectations, the mix of artistic and animation styles is ingenious and the way the shots are framed and “filmed” is immersive and attention grabbing and its one of the few sequels to an animated movie that really feels like its a solid next step in the franchise instead of just hanging off of it like a money keychain
Spiderverse is still one of my favorite movies ever. Awesome storytelling and visuals that just blew my mind watching it in theaters. I hope there's a sequel in the works
I'm a recently-graduated animator. I went into college hating 3D animation for how soulless it was and how it's just been a way for Disney and Pixar to show off their computer software and make hyperrealistic CGI horror shows instead of well-thought-through feature films. Into the Spider-Verse changed my entire perspective on 3D animation and made me excited for it again. It showed me new possibilities for stylistically creative CG animated feature films. This movie changed everything for me - it's a masterpiece and I'm so glad it exists.
One of the rare cg films I have ever had.., that feeling about that “yeah, this is going to be the must have experience of the year” and made it the must see of my schedule. I’m so glad it beat out incredibles 2 that year.
I grew up watching Pixar and their films. Toy Story and the rest of the classics but only Spider-Verse has made me truly think "this, THIS is what 3d animated films should be like" Break the mold, challenge the medium, that's what they did and I'm glad more studios are following suit like the recent Arcane and their impeccable art direction
i admire and adore this movie to no end. every piece of hard work put into it really shows and it’s one of those movies that i can watch again and again and never get tired of
Into The SpiderVerse is truly a masterpiece in my eyes. One of my favorite, if not my favorite animated films to date. And I'm not even a comic book or Marvel person. But watching this film from an artists perspective is truly incredible, it did what no other animated film had done. You can really feel the love, care and passion the animation team put into it. Amazing video, truly enjoyable to watch. Reminded me of how much I love this film.
I remeber when I first saw the trailer of this- I was watching I don’t even know what in theaters, and I thought to myself “Y’know, I’m not sure how this’ll turn out, but even if the story sucks I’ll watch it because it looks frickin’ gorgeous.” Now, i keep coming across videos like this one describing the visuals, and explaining just how they enhance the story, and the way the characters express themselves, and it just makes me so happy that this out-of-box art experiment ended up being such a masterpiece that the franchise will continue. Great video y’all, I had no idea that the depth of field was created via the doubling, and it totally explains how even the most innocuous of screencaps of this movie still maintain that comic-book-like effect even when a character doesn’t take up like half the screen. It’s great. Thank y’all for this!
Oooh you weren't kidding about this video! I love this so much. I feel like every day I learn about someone new who had a massive impact on shaping something I love. This instance being Roger Deakins' consultation on Walle and how that shaped future animated films. I wish these impacts and their contributors were more obvious to the general public (me lol), but at the same time there is something beautifully novel about discovering it in a more minute fashion like watching your RUclips video. But I do agree, I am extremely excited for the further investment into a animated film franchise that has an entirely different take on the now a-typical camera-realistic animation style. And that doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of the quality storytelling that was/is Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse lol.
Yes! I mean it’s fantastic that we get the best of both worlds across all the amazing animated movies that come out each year. What artists are capable of is just insane. Anyway, I’m glad I’m able to share some of these factoids with people who care but don’t already know. Because that’s pretty much me in a nutshell. I learn a thing that amazes me, and all I want is for other people to know it, too.
@@CinemaStix Completely insane. Thank you for sharing! It is definitely a wonder of humanity for sure lol. That we can just be excited about something and want to share that with others.
Yeah sorry about that. The first couple hours are crucial for a video, so I change a bunch of stuff around until I hit a title/thumbnail combination that’s optimal. It’s annoying. But usually worth it in the end.
It’s really a gem on its own, also the use of different frame rates per character as a development arc is so awesome. (Miles has an lower frame rate when slinging through the forest and still learning, and the older more experienced Peter has a higher smoother frame rate while slinging because he knows what he’s doing. Making miles look visually and literally more choppy)
What a beutiful video. Short but one of the most eye opening video essays i have ever watched. The break down of what makes comic book great. The masterfull way you quickly explain how they did their shading, lighting, and blur effects while explaining them all in a quick yet effective way. Absolutly masterpiece of a video.
Just thinking about how this amazing work of art is allowed to exist and reach its potential makes me so emotional. Like, to live in a world where the people who wanted to make it, who had this vision for it, could, when they might have been restricted or shut down, leaves me so hopeful for the future of cinema in a way i haven't felt in years. Great video
The aspect of using misalignment as switching focus feels akin to how Cuphead (the game) uses background art (complicated) to mean 'interactless' and interactive art (simple with thicker outline) to mean 'interactfull'.
I literally LOVE how they made this Spider-Man movie. All of it is just a masterpiece. The art, the graphics, the sound effects, the VA’s, etc. all of it is just one big masterpiece.
Kin pin's design is so cool as he just straight uo block 80% of the screen into full blackness, sending pressure just with all the colourful background disappeared
Thanks for pointing out those details about the art style of Into the Spiderverse.... it's sooo freakin cool. I really never noticed those things before. I also went frame-by-frame just then and realized they animated on two's. Never realized that before....crazy. :)
I didn't know it was coming. hadn't seen any trailers on it. So imagine my surprise - seeing this for the first time as a finished product. the attention to detail... the various layers of storytelling. things like Miles running like his uncle the Prowler and not swinging as the typical Spiderman does. ART! Sony didn't need to do all these things - but they decided to. they could have gotten away with less... but they had something to add to the collection of art humanity has been building. I rewatch it every 6 months or so just to remind myself of what ART looks like... and to remind myself to do the best that I can... leave nothing in the tank.
I'm so thankful for lord and miller pushing the boundaries of animation in film that had become so...samey. Certainly a pixar film a disney film and a dreamworks film all have their own look but they ultimately have very similar over all styles, but since Lego Movie and Into the Spider-verse studios have been more willing to experiment with the styles. I mean Disney is still doing it's own thing, but others.
"the first theatrically released animated film to depict an Avenger" wait a minute. I didn't realize until now how true this is. Aside from CGI in live action movies, theres been no full length animated mcu films until now.
there are so many details in this that i don't think i realized the first time i watched Spider-verse where i absolutely cannot unsee now, and i appreciate each and every one of them, from smear lines and frames instead of motion blur, to that misalignment idea in replacement of standard camera focus. they went all-out with it and it completely paid off
This reminds of Guilty Gears transition from 2d to its iconic 2.5d graphics in XRD where Arcsystems basically animated everything frame by frame like 2d sprites with little to no keyframes. So every frame of an action is basically a photographed pose to give the illusion of 2d in a completely 3d game.
Spider-Verse isn’t just another superhero movie, it’s a piece of cinematic history. Even Puss in Boots took elements from Spider-Verse, even though initially, the Shrek universe had a fairly realistic style.
I bet the Shrek Universe (if produced today) would have had the same comic-style animation Puss in Boots had. It was, unfortunately, limited by the advancement in technology at the times… but it is essentially still a fairy tale
This is my favorite movie of all time. I'm obsessed with it. I think it's brilliant in countless ways and I enjoy something new every time I watch it. I have a room full of collectibles from the film and can't wait for the two sequels to arrive! ❤
It's crazy how the art and direction in a film can make anyone fal in love with it. Different backgrounds, ages and im turn things we look for in a movie. But the beauty shown in every example in this video fills me with a feeling of joy found in few other places.
With the success of Spiderverse I really hope that means we get a whole catalogue of comic book movie. Imagine the crazy stuff we’d be able to see come to life.
Agreed. I also highly recommend Cartoon Saloon’s movies (WolfWalkers, The Breadwinner, A Song of the Sea, and The Secret of Kells). Absolutely gorgeous hand drawn animation.

🫣ITS FINALLY HERE🫣
There's literal limitless potential with digital art and yet they so often hold back
As soon as I saw the trailer for this movie, I was like, “Oh, Sony is just trying to make another stupid reboot of Spider-Man attempting to make themselves relevant again.” Then, I watched it, and I was pleasantly blown away. It was an absolute blast from start to finish and a work of art. Can’t wait for the sequel!

People always use the term “comic book movies” but I’d never thought it could be taken so literally until this film came out. Spider-Verse is a master class in animation.
6:10 nearly 6 years later, and I still get chills watching that scene. A testament to how good this movie is.
It was my absolute favorite
Watched the second movie twice, and it is so beautiful. Gwen’s universe constantly changes colour palletes and is less of a comic and more of a painting with literal brush strokes!
her story almost made me cry both times, i was on the verge of tears. not only because im currently relating to it on a personal level but its the most beautiful form of portraying emotion ive seen. the entire screen was filled with brush strokes across an imax theater screen. its so risky, ingenious, and pays off.
Best spider-movie ever made. I'm really happy that the existence of this movie pushed cg animation as a whole towards a more drawn and painted look.
imo spiderman 2 and no way home were better but valid opinion.
@@myweirdsecondchannelwithap9070
Spiderman 2 is a maybe, but it does not beat out no way home. thats movie is amazing, most fun ive had at a theater probably ever. but the first act of no way home is not great at all.
@@demifolk8940 I've changed my opinion since then, now soiderverse is my favorite spiderman movie ever. And no way home is 4th.
Try "Loving Vincent" 🤭🤭🤭
Legend of Korra does it too.
@mildlyobesegoat7262 ehhh...not really. It's a really dynamic aesthetic, BUT it's not the same level.
They wanted to see how well they could replicate a comic book and they really *nailed it*
I find it interesting that in the examples you provided of hatching and half-toning "substituting" traditional lighting, there is also clear use of that traditional lighting. Particularly the latter; there are clear gradients on Miles' face, and the spider itself looks more like a digital painting than a from a comic book.
I wonder if they sacrificed a complete adherence to the comic book look in order to increase readability. That'd be amicable, in my opinion.

I love your observation.it’s defiantly not just a great Spider-Man film it’s one of the best animated films ever made.
Totally. Such a unique take on both the genre and the medium.
Spider-verse is one of the more recent examples of animation being a medium and not a genre. It’s time these artists get the respect they deserve
A movie is always good when you can frame step through the entire thing and see the love and detail in it.
fancy seeing you here
@@greataxeblade Great minds think alike, and have the same videos on their RUclips recommendations.
Incredibly concise, deliberate and thoughtful work put into a contemporary video essay in under 10 minutes. Outstanding.
Wow, thank you! Just happy you enjoyed it :)

I absolutely loved this movie in theaters. It’s such a great embodiment of Spider-Man
The Spider Verse art style is cartoony and comic-like.
This movie made comic come to life, and they did it in a cartoony way
This is what I was trying to tell everyone when I first heard about this movie. The amount of love put into this movie is insane and I want everyone to know it
Literally every second of this movie can be used as a wallpaper
I find it so interesting how each universe has a really strong vibe to it and hopefully we’ll get to see more of them with the new movie
Also, favorite spider is Noir, I just love the 60’s detective vibe
I want to see even more movies in this art style, it's amazing. I'd even say it's the best looking animated movie ever. I don't understand why people used to want to make hyper-realistic animated movies when that already exists in real-life movies. Animation is meant to be stylistic, and when you do it correctly you get a masterpiece like this.
I already knew this movie was revolutionary and spectacular but this video helped me to really understand why it is so, on a technical level. Thank you so much!
:)
I think the measure of a strong visual style is when you can grab a screenshot from literally any point in the film's runtime and have it be instantly recognisable.
I feel like people call the MCU comic book movies, but Spider-Man Into the Spider Verse is the only movie that deserves that title
It is a must watch and I can see this trilogy being one of my favorite
the thing about spiderverse is that it helped popularise different animations, It allowed to experiment and take the risks and be innovative and make art, it doesnt have to be perfect, it doesnt have to be extremely releastic, it Just has to make us Feel It
This video was very well written, never thought I’d be hearing about how the spiderverse revolutionized animations but here I am
just saw across the spiderverse a couple days ago and it absolutely lived up to my expectations, the mix of artistic and animation styles is ingenious and the way the shots are framed and “filmed” is immersive and attention grabbing and its one of the few sequels to an animated movie that really feels like its a solid next step in the franchise instead of just hanging off of it like a money keychain
I like how the SFX sound for the donut thrown as “DONUT”. Hilarious lol
It isn't just the ground-breaking visuals. They nailed the soundtracks too.
One of the rare cg films I have ever had.., that feeling about that “yeah, this is going to be the must have experience of the year” and made it the must see of my schedule. I’m so glad it beat out incredibles 2 that year.
I grew up watching Pixar and their films. Toy Story and the rest of the classics but only Spider-Verse has made me truly think "this, THIS is what 3d animated films should be like"
Break the mold, challenge the medium, that's what they did and I'm glad more studios are following suit like the recent Arcane and their impeccable art direction
okay, fine, i'll rewatch into the spiderverse
i admire and adore this movie to no end. every piece of hard work put into it really shows and it’s one of those movies that i can watch again and again and never get tired of
Spider-Man noir is my favorite of the bunch, hands down.
Honestly I’d be hyped for a film dedicated to each alt Spider-Man
This movie was literally one of my favourites if not my absolute favourite. Between the sound track, animation and style it was a masterpiece
This was a great video! I'm surprised it doesnt have more views already, usually a video of this quality blows up quick
Thank you so much! Yeah.. my videos never, ever do immediately. But it’s only been half a day, so we’ll see.
Any time I see a video about spider-verse on any capacity, it always being a smile to my face.
I hear that.
My favorite part of that morbius comic strip was when morbius said “insert quote here”
Oooh you weren't kidding about this video!
"other comic book movies are doing it wrong" I was so confused when I clicked on it and it had a different name
Yeah sorry about that. The first couple hours are crucial for a video, so I change a bunch of stuff around until I hit a title/thumbnail combination that’s optimal. It’s annoying. But usually worth it in the end.
i love that spider pigs nose blinks at the same time.
This video made me appreciate this movie to a different level.
Definitely deserves more views
They definitely did their best to take a comic book and translate it as truly as they could into a movie. It is genuinely impressive
What a beutiful video. Short but one of the most eye opening video essays i have ever watched. The break down of what makes comic book great. The masterfull way you quickly explain how they did their shading, lighting, and blur effects while explaining them all in a quick yet effective way. Absolutly masterpiece of a video.
this and alberto mielgo's love death+ robots style is so beautiful and feels like my truly ideal kind of aesthetic, it's so refreshing and different
into the spiderverse was one of the sole motivators for me to pursue comics/animation
Great video
Honey wake up new cinemastix video dropped
:)
The aspect of using misalignment as switching focus feels akin to how Cuphead (the game) uses background art (complicated) to mean 'interactless' and interactive art (simple with thicker outline) to mean 'interactfull'.
Why does everyone talk about spider pig from the Simpsons movie instead of the fact that spider ham existed before that movie even came out
These films, on every level, are absolutely incredible.
they need to make more movies just like into the spider verse it's still one my my favorite animations out there
Literally why Spider-Man: Into The Spidervese is one of the most beautiful animated movies I’ve ever seen
Who else got recommended this vid after seeing Across the Spider-Verse?
"the first theatrically released animated film to depict an Avenger" wait a minute. I didn't realize until now how true this is. Aside from CGI in live action movies, theres been no full length animated mcu films until now.
there are so many details in this that i don't think i realized the first time i watched Spider-verse where i absolutely cannot unsee now, and i appreciate each and every one of them, from smear lines and frames instead of motion blur, to that misalignment idea in replacement of standard camera focus. they went all-out with it and it completely paid off
Such an incredible analysis and a very entertaining video!
:)
Spider-Man into the spider verse was amazing can’t wait for the next ine
This is the most comprehensive summary I think I've ever heard. Thank you for this video coverage!! 💯
Cannot wait for the sequel

Honestly, I'm surprised it took someone this long to make a movie with the art style of a comic book like Spiderverse did
It's crazy how the art and direction in a film can make anyone fal in love with it.
Different backgrounds, ages and im turn things we look for in a movie.
But the beauty shown in every example in this video fills me with a feeling of joy found in few other places.
I really loved the idea of using the comic book style for the movie
With the success of Spiderverse I really hope that means we get a whole catalogue of comic book movie. Imagine the crazy stuff we’d be able to see come to life.
my favorite spiderman is spider-noir he's so much less generic and more serious yet still maintains humor through his contrast with others
Really well crafted video. Makes me love this movie even more.
Alberto Mielgo did insane amount of work on the visual style of that movie.
Into the spideverse and arcane are the best animation the west has done in years (from what i've seen)
Agreed. I also highly recommend Cartoon Saloon’s movies (WolfWalkers, The Breadwinner, A Song of the Sea, and The Secret of Kells). Absolutely gorgeous hand drawn animation.
@@sludders ill be sure to check them out 😊
Black and white Detective Spiderman is probably the best spiderman design in my book. Mainly because it's dark and that popped collar looks amazing. I love the style and I often wear a similar look in real life.
Also that rubics cube joke was good.
Into the Spiderverse was a P E R F E C T movie
I now have even more respect for the people who made this movie, and the movie itself
raimi's spiderman 2 will always be my favorite, from a kid first seeing it to now as an adult, it still holds up so well.
