I love this song, i've been playing it on an on the whole week. I personally not always need a huge vocal challenge or deep philosophical lyrics and i think that's why i enjoy it so much. Loving that kind of 90's Pet Shop Boys vibe. Funny fact those simply lyrics brought me back when i was been bullied at school and to me at somehow is like me singing that song to myself haha. An easy, catchy and danceable song that give me live.

The difficulty here is, for most viewers voting, that national final performance was their first time seeing the song being performed. First impressions are very important to make people wanna vote for you but I think who thought of creating that performance ultimately doomed Chérine's chances.

I appreciate this isnt going to be everyones cup of tea, BUT the Eurofans seem to foam at the mouth for anything that has a cultural flute or intense vocal gymnastics.
This is nothing like house music. It's pure unadulterated dance music. A house track wouldn't translate well to Eurovision.
This just channels all that was good in the 90's, puts it through a 2000's churning machine and reformatted it for the current musical market. Its pulling in on all the current 90's movement in music. Just look at the revival of the Nightcrawlers and all the EDM tracks recently that have rehashed the 90's tracks.
For anyone that lived through the 90's and 2000's, you'd know that Belgium was known for their dance music. Some of the biggest Eurodance artists emerged from that country so I can see the lineage for this type of song.
At first I wasn't a fan of this, but the more I understand where its coming from, what hes channeling and compare it to the other 'modern' but discordant songs that have entered the Eurovision contest this year, I've grown to appreciate and love just what it stands for.

I think it was a good bet. The melody is upbeat with a "New Wave - Disco" beat; catchy, remembering Boy George, with a touch of modernity if join the backing voices and the Gospel that introduces homogeneity to the whole.
The lyrics contain a message of self motivation and celebration, referring to the importance of the search for change, as a key element of acceptance to stop the conflicts and scourges that follow one another and that determines the need for an obvious orientation brought by self-knowledge/self-love.
The presentation (image) is complex; going to drink influence in the Flemish painting of the century. XVI, XVII, reflecting, (i think the brand image of the singer, Gustaph, represents the designs of the city of Antwerp's reputation in Fashion Design), along with what goes on behind the singer; pictures displaying watchwords, concepts, positioning in foreground and color, of the importance of the subject empowered with unique qualities with the security that allows experiencing simultaneously the everyday and the spiritual, involved in building a liberal society with an intuitive perspective. This was not on my radar as a potential winner of Eurosong, but I will say he climbed to my top 3 after I saw the live performance. He really elevated it, and this is not my preferred genre either, but I'm impressed by his and his backing singers' on-stage charisma + I find the chorus very catchy. He came 2nd in the televote over the 2 main (international) fan favorites. Only The Starlings got more televotes, but they were an established act with many domestic fans before the songs were even released. I'll grant you "Because of You" features trite lyrics, but The Starlings' song was arguably worse in this regard, and with a weaker hook. It could have gone a lot worse if Gustaph did not beat them. The Starlings would not stand out enough in a televote only semi final. Gustaph will have a tough time too, but I do see a path for him if enough viewers find him charismatic, if the staging is good (and that's a big IF with Belgium), if the semi final is ballad-heavy, and if the running order is favorable (in fact, I feel like his song lends well to being a semi opener or closer).
All I'm saying, while this may not have been the best choice overall, I would not count him out yet. Most of y'all did not think Belgium was gonna qualify last year, and they did, and would have even without the jury scores. I don't know... this strikes me as a little more televote-friendly than "Miss You".

The fact that the top 4 in this NF were within 10 points of each other, and this won by 1 point... This was no way within my radar of winning, but I always liked the snippet whenever it shows up in recaps. But I never looked into it until it won because the song didn't interest me.

It reminds me of Israel 2022: A good vocal, a good performer, good vocals, and an overall good package, it's just not great. Just very good, middle of the road. I could see it being bigger on the Eurovision stage and being really cool, but I don't have much faith in the broadcaster.
Especially since this is the same broadcaster that gave us Sennek's staging. With Belgium, you have kind of two countries under one name. The Wallonian broadcaster has been responsible for stagings such as Loic, Blanche, Eliot, and Jeremie. The Flemish broadcaster has been responsible for Axel, Laura, Sennek, and Hooverphonic. While they did manage to get the staging right in 2021, that was probably because of Hooverphonic being such experienced performers.
Overall, Belgium will struggle to qualify, but I could see it passing through barely, similar to Czech Republic and Romania 2022.

    • @AlesiaMichelle
      @AlesiaMichelle  2 года назад +3

      1. Last year wasn't a strong year
      2. Belgium really can't stage no matter who is responsible tbh. Eliot, Jeremie, and Sennek were not good... Hooverphonic was good because they did what they wanted to do. They were seasoned artists with vision. Let's hope Gustaph has some vision.

I think you are right actually. Sennek had one of the best songs that year and no doubt about her magnificent voice. But omg: the staging was absolutely horrible! What were they thinking!? How could they ruin such a beautiful song? Laura was ok though? But I understand what you mean. Chances of survival are low, but indeed, I hope vrt will not fxgk up the staging once again.

The guy can sing, the staging was well done, he needs to take the backing singers to Liverpool. The songs has great 90s vibes, people were dancing.
Gives me similar vibes as Laura Tesoro.
It was not my 1st choice but it's far from the worse they could have picked.
Chérine was a fan fave and the song is very catchy but her staging was so Junior.
Gal Dragot was very good but that type of song is hit or miss.
The Starlings won public vote with a nice but, IMO, not Euro compatible song.

It's not a great track, far from it, but then none of the Belgian NF crop were. The songs all lacked that special extra something. Not mad that this is what my country is sending this year. If anything I was really enjoying the WTF moment when Gustaph jumped over the Starlings in the voting. I would've maybe preferred Gala Dragot, but that would've been yet another moody one from Belgium. At least the fans in Liverpool will have a great time with this one. This national final was all about the artists with no thought given to the actual songs. It's the area where VRT can and should improve the most for a next edition.
For this year, the team should just go all in, guns blazing. And do some heavy camerawork-prep.

The thing about being polarising is that even if a group of people absolutely hate your song, there will always be a group of people who love your song and will support it no matter what. If people are indifferent about your song, they don't necessarily dislike it, but they won't be talking about it or paying attention to it, and so few people will be bothered to vote for it and as a result, it will not make the final.
