I know this is an old vid, but My condolences. Lost mine about two years after this. I built a car to take my mind off it a little. Unfortunately dad went a year later, and step mother a little less than a year later after. We all do what we have to, but we never forget that loss. Great work, learning a lot and putting it to use on my Rot boat I thought was a deal. Thanks for the time spent.
Great Job! By far the best restoration work I have ever seen. So close to being done. Can't wait to see what kind of a challenge you take on next. Mike
Glad to see you're back. Best collection of memories that I have with my dad was working on projects, whether it was rebuilding the porch to their house or pulling the engines to my collection of Lotus cars..
Man way to tackle a tuff project ! Got a Lemmon and you put your head down and made lemonade excellent save ! I’m more impressed with your character and solving a problem then the massive project . Great Video and project
We are very sorry to hear of your Mother's passing. We would like to pass along our deepest condolences to you and your family . Our thoughts and prayers are with you. I'm very sorry to hear of your loss.
Sorry to Hear about your Mom been watching since your first vid and looking forward to the finished boat and sad you had to rebuild it after just buying it! But lesson learned and time to get er done! GG on great restoration!
I know your videos is six seven years old but my heart still goes out to you about your mom RIP I hope you still have the boat and everything is well I lost my mom 3 years ago and God bless you
@tasmania105 I have to work on this outside, and the wind was always a problem. An HVLP gun still has over spray, and it would have gone everywhere. The roller worked fine. The other issue we were having is short working times. It was kicking at 5 to 10 minutes.
Boat builder here: If that is 2 part paint (epoxy based), usually with an isocyanate driven solvent, please wear a full suit and professional ventilated mask and paint in a ventilated booth OR outside. You do NOT want to have that paint on your skin, or be breathing it AT ALL. If you can smell the paint, you are being exposed to it. An organic filtration mask (non ventilated like the one you guys are wearing) is not sufficient protection for those types of paint. If you are using a one part paint, it is generally less toxic, but you still need skin protection and a good sealing (non ventilated) mask, and be painting outside. I like your DIY attitude and determination. WAY TO GO! Please be safe!
If you use a foam roller it goes down nice. The cheap nap rollers fell apart. If I could have had a garage to spray in, I would have done so, but the overspray is HUGE!
You will be fine. Just sand the wax off. I used short nap roller and just rolled away, and there is no reason to wait 24 hours. The stuff cures in about an hour, and you can put another coat down right then.
You videos are great. I have a question for you. I’m gonna redo my boat this year. No serious problems, just want to get rid of the carpet, fix a few areas and put down a non skid. After I glass the plywood do you think it would be better to gel coat or use Awl Grip or Kiwi Grip? Or maybe gel coat then put a non skid on top. My original plan was just to put down the Fiberglas and use Kiwi grip right over that. I’m rethinking it a little. What do you think?
Sorry to hear about your Mom. Mine died 10 days before yours. I'm trying to restore the fiberglass camper top of my '78 VW Westfalia Bus. Is it possible to lay gel coat over the existing finish after sanding. Also how do you make the finish flat? Thanks for the info. Bob Pratt, Abington, MA
If you can smell the styrene when gel coating, change the organic filters in your mask, they have a limited life time an as soon as you open the packet they start working.
Enjoying this series. Is the gelcoat self-levelling? How particular does one have to be in prepping surface imperfections in the fiberglass? Also, what camera are you filming with? Thanks!
How long did it take you from start to finish and what was price on all the supplies because I have a ALL American Larson and I want to do the same thing to mine
Even 10% it flashes fast in those temps. Surprise you’re using such a small roller. If you do it again your best bet is to have batches all measured out and ready to catalyze and use cardboard to lay everything out as a work space and have several pairs of gloves and full size rollers and ready to rock ‘n’ roll. If you keep one pair of gloves on at all times, you can replace the second glove quickly because the sweat will not make it stick on your hand. I find using a large chip brush works the best and for anything but totally flat hard surface is a 7 inch roller works but usually it’s just one more thing to get in the way of the project and I just poured out of the cup on to the boat and spread around
You need another one I have a 1994 searay 200 series that needs interior work motor runs great . I will take 2,500 for it and I will throw in everything I have to finish the boat . I am in meridian, mississippi
@@FriscoBoatersGarage Thanks for the reply. By the way, I watched the whole Sea Ray overhaul series. You did a great job on that boat, and a lot of really good information and pointers. Thanks.
Hey love the videos I have watched several now and I thought it is Ironic that I have almost the exact same boat in the 20ft version with simiular problems. I have some qustions how can i contact you?
so could i roll on gelcoat on the bottom of my seadoo and then sand it? i know to go from more agressive paper and step down to less aggressive then compound then polish but would it be ok to roll the gelcoat on the bottom
Found these videos a few days. I also lost my mother and restoring my boat has been my healing process. Thank you.

Oh heck yeah!!! A new boat like this is around 60K with a big block and features. I have WAAAAAAAY less in it... and no payment.

Roller it is for my project !
Watching all these segments, was sure sorry to hear that you lost your mom. Hope you're doing well.

How many pounds do you think you have added to this boat from stock ?
completely surprised you didn't buy a Ez-up canopy to cover the boat for shade, work, fume dissipation, and keep a breeze rollin' through...
Merci beaucoup ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

@cuban571 I hope so, your boat has it all over the outside.
Did you scuff up / sand the first layer of gelcoat before applying the second layer? Or were you able to apply it straight on?
@vwfoolwhy I think I might tackle four wheelers this winter.
How long did it take you from start to finish and what was price on all the supplies because I have a ALL American Larson and I want to do the same thing to mine
@conroyz28
I know most of them, and they knew it was not permanent. It is at the storage place now.
How come you didn't use your HVLP gun or a cup gun to shoot the gelcoat, instead of rolling it on?
if i was to paint the motor compartment in my boat . what are the things i would need

jay how much did you had to spend fixing this boat .? was it cheaper than buying a new one with the total cost boat plus restoration ?
Is there advantage to using gelcoat vs base coat/clear coat ??
what purpose does gelcoat serve, and can u just aplly it on top of fiberglass.
Hey j just wondering if you used waxed gelcoat for the lot or just the top coat?
what paintings do you use and where can I buy it?
My OCD was saying "missed a bit" on that 2nd coat LOL

That's it gelcoat for me too : ]
is gel coat salt water resistant
Does your Homeowners Assc. not give you hell about the boat in the driveway. I live in Frisco and mine are complete a-holes.lol
Us- Composites. Much easier to work with.
@LaDolceVita54
I used it as 3/4% and only got about 15 minutes.
I use US-composites. It just works better.
Sorry too hear but love never ends !
Hey Jay, what's the brand of the gel coat you used? I'm planning on ripping the carpet out of my boat and going gel coat.
I really dont remeber. I have used a few different brands
@@FriscoBoatersGarage Thanks for the reply. By the way, I watched the whole Sea Ray overhaul series. You did a great job on that boat, and a lot of really good information and pointers. Thanks.

Шикарно!!!
Gel coat gos straight over plywood ?
After you coat it with glass and resin
so could i roll on gelcoat on the bottom of my seadoo and then sand it? i know to go from more agressive paper and step down to less aggressive then compound then polish but would it be ok to roll the gelcoat on the bottom
Shaine Fenwick Did you solve your issue? I'm also looking to redo the bottom. I just don't know if I'm going with paint or gel...
In 5 days someone will see your mom in they dreams if they do took her some flowers
Can’t you just spray the jell ?
Is gelcoat better for the inside or flat coat clear coat ??
Rick S gel
@big9286al Almost 3 gallons
Growers Luv bro
can you spray the gel coat?
Yes. You need a special spray tip.
can i use your boat name, a little different though?
Wouldn't it be easier to spray it on ??
Rick S either way. I wanted to have some texture for your feet. If I sprayed the coat it would have been slick.
sad for your lose!
Have you thought about Rhino lining it?
give me so advie on my boat l have to do the whole groud
You'll probably have more hours into repairing that boat than the owner will put on it in 10 years.?
.. LOL!!
I don't know you but sorry for your lost
Wrong respirator filters, Rust use inorganic respirator filters. You wont even smell the fumes.
Sorry. About your. Mom. Ray. Michigan. 🌷🌷🌷🌷
18 pinheads thumbing this down ? "why" ???
He doesn't explain anything about gel coat or the process. Leaves a lot of info out of other videos as well.
Rip
When u get true fixing the boat , all will be left is killing the guy who sold u it.
Sorry about your mom.
Not recommended.
