I think the guy falling out of the pickup got hurt worse than the pilot. The pilot did a good job for the situation he was in, he knew it was gonna flip.
I am thrilled to see that, at least, everyone was able to walk after. Planes can be fixed and brought back to life. People can't. Every landing you walk away from is a good landing in my book.
Was a little surprised the air speed couldn't have been reduced more on end of approach, plus an extra flair to hold it longer on the good wheel. However, glad pilot was OK and - plane looks repairable, except not sure of how much damage may have occurred to that upper right cylinder and whether crank got hurt.
Agreed... it was way too hot. I'm coming in with a busted wheel carriage... I'm floating down just above stall speed and then flair it as it nears the ground. He probably would have pancaked softly and not damaged the plane so bad... and then that poor guy wouldn't have fallen out of the truck either. I think he knows it too.... watch as he crawls out of the cockpit, he pounds the ground violently with his fist.
Wow. That was scary. Glad the pilot walked away! Seems like an eventful field. I recall a Sopwith Camel ground looping and hitting one of the buildings on the far side of the field.
Was that the Fleet Trainer? I saw that when I visited in 2000. I missed that last airshow by one week, darn. I built a model of the Fleet from plans in a 1942 magazine, (the year I was born).
No offense meant by this comment but I would have tried to come in as slow and low as possible while using just enough power to stay on the starboard side tire to make the eventual nose-over with the least amount of energy possible.
Wow way too fast, been to ORA many times, that looked north of 60 at least, flare and stall 3 feet up and get the prop stopped, saw the Bleriot get caught in a cross breeze, got the prop stopped, but damaged the gear hitting the white fence, was there when Tony Nasta died, had a running joke with him "How's your Anzani been?"
Looks like a Fleet, not sure, but the damage is fixable although expensive. And of course this assessment comes only after knowing that all concerned walked away from it.
I hope everyone was okay after this! I couldn't help but think of one of the first scenes in the movie "The Great Waldo Pepper". What a scary situation to be in!
Sad day. Look like he was able to walk away he did his best, I bet the plane will fly again you can fix anything if you have the desire to do so. If he had no radio they would flash lights at him warn him of a problem with the aircraft.
I sort of thought so, allowing myself to be separated from the moment. In reality, that was an upsetting moment for anyone involved and that chap took a hard fall on his back. I hope there was no permanent damage.
That Fleet is a tough old bird. It protected pilot and passenger when it flipped. Not going to comment about landing speed because l do not know what landing speed is.
hot doggin on takeoff. Tried to get it off the ground from the small rise at the south end of the runway before reaching the bottom of the rise. Basically a stall on takeoff that busted the gear when it came back down but he was still able to get it airborne.
Not that rare an incident in early aviation aircraft landing on dirt fields. It’ll be rebuilt likely in a year or so. Damaged, yes, but repairable. Fortunately nobody was killed. I wonder who does this guys maintenance? FAA is gonna have fun with his mechanic.
The left landing gear snapped on take-off, and the right one snapped on landing. Pilot and passenger were ok, so also was the person who jumped out of the pick-upResponse time: the local Fire Company was notified of the situation and the plane flew around burning off fuel while they arrived and setup.
An aerodrome is: a location from which aircraft flight operations take place, regardless of whether they involve air cargo, passengers, or neither. And this location is the living aircraft museum the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in Red Hook, New York
Well that sucked. I think the guy that fell out of the pickup truck got Hurt more than the guys in the airplane.LMAO. New propeller new spark plugs. "NEW" bolts for landing gear oops!!!
The speed kept in approach and in the flare was very high, moreover it kept the engine on . . . and therefore it had not closed the fuel circuit. All this makes me think that he had no radio on board . . . and therefore he had not noticed the damage to the gear.
Glad there are so many experts commenting! Rhinebeck is a fantastic place if your close enough to spend the day you should do it then make comments from your excperance!
He new the gear was damaged on take off, he flew around burning off fuel and waiting for the fire dept. to get staged before he attempted to land. You would know this if you read the description.....
My guess is that it's his plane or he has a stake in it. Not only in money but possibly also in time restoring it. Takes a lot of passion to restore an old airplane and if he was in on that he may have felt it was his fault or that he could have done something better, or possibly just disgust at the fact it happened. Just a guess. I agree that the aircraft looked a bit fast at touchdown, however since I was not there it is not my place to comment on the job the pilot did in landing the aircraft, especially in the condition it was. The most important thing is that they walked...although the dude falling out of the pickup almost didn't. LOL Believe the aircraft was a Fleet 16? Anyone who knows the aircraft/was there care to chime in? Are they going to restore it?
HONDARIDER...If you look at the wing during the walkaround, you'll notice that there aren't any holes in the fabric on that section of the wing....he was just punching the ground, apparently. abro....Yes, it's a Finch 16-B, and to my knowledge they've simply placed it in storage, presumably in a queue for restoration at a later date.
I think the guy falling out of the pickup got hurt worse than the pilot. The pilot did a good job for the situation he was in, he knew it was gonna flip.
hope everyone was OK! Including the guy that fell out the pickup!
That’s what I was thinking. He took it like a champ though
And god bless the man who summersaulted out the pickup in all his excitement.
I am thrilled to see that, at least, everyone was able to walk after.
Planes can be fixed and brought back to life.
People can't.
Every landing you walk away from is a good landing in my book.
For some reason it seems like they are very experienced in handling a situation like that. Not the first time I presume.
that top Wing saved his life it could have been much worse
Excellent emergency response time !

He was way too fast.
My thoughts too......
Lacked the hind sight we have!
still would have flipped

Really? Darn, I guess if those old birds get landed often enough, no degree of effort and skill can avoid an eventual mishap.
I went up in that plane once....It was awesome day and a great flight!
Was that the Fleet Trainer? I saw that when I visited in 2000. I missed that last airshow by one week, darn. I built a model of the Fleet from plans in a 1942 magazine, (the year I was born).
The guy in the white shirt did a forward loop out of that truck....He must be pretty tough or hides pain very well....Glad he is ok....
Forgot the gear down and welded part of the landing checklist.
The idiot falling out of the truck in his urgency to be a "hero" added comic genius.
No offense meant by this comment but I would have tried to come in as slow and low as possible while using just enough power to stay on the starboard side tire to make the eventual nose-over with the least amount of energy possible.
Glad everyone is okay. Sure turned into a big production. Who was flying?

Awesome Landing job
Did you put your microphone in the engine of some plane idling nearby?
How did the gear get busted up
Looks like a Fleet, not sure, but the damage is fixable although expensive. And of course this assessment comes only after knowing that all concerned walked away from it.
Taking off is optional, landing is mandatory...
ÓTIMO TRABALHO !! FROM BRASIL.
I hope everyone was okay after this!
I couldn't help but think of one of the first scenes in the movie "The Great Waldo Pepper".
What a scary situation to be in!
One of my top 10 movies for sure.
I love the fact that it takes three ambulances for one pilot.
1:14 guy does flip out of truck lmao
23:09 What the hell is the woman in the pony tail doing.? I never seen so many dumb asses in one place.
@@textech4056 She was at at 15:40 too, let me see where is the place with the least amount of leverage, aha right here.

Why did the gear fail? Was it damaged on take off?
He did well and Lady Luck helped a little
Isn't that the old purple kite that they use for the paid quick flips around the field??
no
The guy falling out of the pickup truck backwards and nobody helping him at 1:12 was damn funny.
xDDDDDDD
abundantYOUniverse LMFAOOOOO i just now noticed that
I sort of thought so, allowing myself to be separated from the moment. In reality, that was an upsetting moment for anyone involved and that chap took a hard fall on his back. I hope there was no permanent damage.
Favorite moments. 1:14 The Keystone Cops arrive on the scene. 1:20 the pilot does his best Charlton Heston, "You maniacs! You blew it up!"
My Waco ASO had safety cables on the landing gear struts in case they pulled apart....
Or was that my Fairchild 24G....It was a long time ago....
That Fleet is a tough old bird. It protected pilot and passenger when it flipped. Not going to comment about landing speed because l do not know what landing speed is.
does anyone know how the landing gear got in that condition?

lol’d at the guy tumbling out of the truck🤣

Went from an air cooled engine to a dirt cooled engine in 1 second flat.
what happens to the gear? - take care if you jump out of your pickup
The left landing gear snapped on take-off, and the right one snapped on landing. Pilot and passenger were ok, so also was the person who jumped out of the pick-upResponse time: the local Fire Company was notified of the situation and the plane flew around burning off fuel while they arrived and setup.
That's very smart!
We firemen get us on the v8deo
Old Rhinebeck is doing pretty good, there almost averaging a crash a year.
It's the only reason I go 🙂
I would have torn the other side off, yes that could easily have been done. It would have been a much more stable touchdown.
Wonder what that felt like
The clown somersaulting off the pickup?..... embarrassing as hell I'd imagine
That plane will fly again. Probably already in air by now...
Bumps acdaziey its enugh to make you weep
"incendent"? and "areodrome"? But okay, they did a terrific job of recovering it onto the trailer - even the firemen helped.
An aerodrome is: a location from which aircraft flight operations take place, regardless of whether they involve air cargo, passengers, or neither.

Oh now I see you were just insulting the spelling. You needn’t concern yourself with such minor issues
Two guys could lift the tail and give them room to get him out....
worse things have happened at sea, back to the drawing board.
Pretty shire he hit landing gear flying head to head with red Barron brushing his top wing , my bad that was Waldo. Glad this flyer is safe good save
BRASIL OK.
Waldo Pepper anybody?
197 like.so sad...

You are right, the only communication was by texting between the pilot and the ground
Fred
@@fred61640 Thanks Fred. Really unpleasant, the pilot could perhaps have limited the damage to this beautiful aircraft.

He came in very fast for a landing on that gear. Not good.
