Old timer here. I remember the early tv dinners from the fifties. They were in foil trays with foil as the seal. One hour in the oven and they were pretty good dinners. They also had way better choices back then than is available today. Years later I worked construction and if you've been out on a winter job and it's 35 degrees with no place to get warm you don't want a cold sandwich for lunch. I had a very ancient electric skillet that I would keep in the gang box at work. I'd pull it out at morning break and set a tv dinner in it on top of an inverted metal pie pan. Set it to 350 and let it heat for two hours. At lunch it would be steaming hot and better than cooked in an oven. My feeling is that keeping the moisture in the dinner is key to getting vegetables that are hot and still moist without over cooking them. Now as a senior I don't want to go to much trouble for a tv dinner meal but I do make one change. I put the dinner in the microwave at twice the recommended time and at 50% power. It cooks the dinner more slowly allowing everything to get hot all the way through without over cooking the vegetables. Not as good as oven cooking but better than microwaving at 100% power. You do have to tweak the time to match the power of your microwave. Regardless of your method I think the real issue is the tray and seal on todays dinners. Foil was always the best way to keep these dinners much fresher but then that won't work in the microwave.
I'm with you, I was working in a steel mill just before they all went to plastic trays and my work station on a rolling mill was about 50ft away from the annealing furnaces burning at 2800°f to temper the coils of steel. They had big water jackets they lowered onto the stacks of steel that had gauge clusters on the side and we would set the aluminum trays on top of the gauge hood and the dinner was ready to eat in 10 minutes.
Foil can work in a microwave, if used properly. Back in the day during the transition to plastic trays, the microwave cookbook that came with my oven (I believe it was an actual Amana Radarange) had instructions on how to work with metal in the oven. The recommendation was to remove the foil and then put the metal tray, back into the box before putting it into the oven. I recall doing that several times before everything was put into plastic trays. Being in the box, arcing was kept in the box. Maybe just keeping the dinner in the box while microwaving can take care of the poor seals?
@@allenparke5874 Yes, as long as it doesn't touch the sides and it's not over 3/4 inch deep and uncovered it's safe in a microwave. Just don't use metal unless it's encased in glass or ceramic like a baking dish with a browning plate in the bottom layer similar to an induction dish.
