Oh yeah, they usually look at Africa as just one and because there are a lot of West Africans in the US, I think they use them as a reference when they look at Africa. I for one, was shocked to discover that in West Africa, they do a lot of their shopping at the open markets and negotiate prices because there's usually no fixed pricing.
Also, some of them get to South Africa and become shocked that we're not walking around wearing "traditional clothes", some say how they would have liked to se us more in African clothes instead of Western clothes.
It's forgivable to an extent because I think Americans have been closed off from the world and have been taught that Africa is poor blah blah blah, but on the other hand, the internet is full of information, they are just reluctant to learn.
What am I supposed to wear then? I can dress in Traditional German clothes maybe since I'm half German South African. You will never see me in "Volkspele klere"😂
We have 12 official languages. South African Sign language has been accented into law by PanSALB (Pan South African Language Board).

It is embarrassing unfortunately Americans on average know little about the rest of the world. Such curiosity is generally not encouraged and the media landscape has always put little to no effort into educating the public about the world outside of the USA.
I would say people know very little outside of where they live. The U.S. is a large nation and I’m always surprised at how many people don’t go 500 miles beyond the area they grew up.
Currently in the process of or considering being an Aupair and you’ve been such a great help with some questions I had ❤️

Very interesting and true. I'm from the US and always made sure to educate myself about Africa as I knew I wasn't getting the true information in America. Yes many people in the US are unaware of the development in many areas of Africa. I have visited Africa and now live here. A lot of people here believe all Americans are wealthy and live fabulous lives. They believe if they come to American they will be wealthy. I have even been asked if the streets were paved in gold! We have a lot to learn from each other and fortunately I've seen much progress over the years.
What country is that? Can't be SA, we're not that ignorant.

Fun fact I'm South African and I went to middle school grade5-grade7, but it was standard3-standard5 back then. It seems like government is doing away with that though, cause all the middle schools that I know are officially primary schools now.

I used to complain about all the malls we had, in roodepoort I can count at least 7. Now in the US they are becoming less due to online shopping. I miss malls. I was talking to a fellow Saffa about shootings, he was defending the US, by saying that SA has public school vandalism. I would rather have that than shootings. Unfortunately we do have a lot of suicides but so does the US. Liked your video.

Not but so does the US we as a region SADC countries basically make up the top 10 highest countries for suicide rates. We need opportunities thats the biggest difference between us and the US they can put syrup on ice and that's a thriving business while we struggle for scraps

Amen to that! We have the friendliest people in the world, the best food in the world, great sense of humour, we actually know how to celebrate especially when the Springboks won, we are friendly to strangers, we have the most beautiful nature in the world and most definitely the smartest people in the world. And the best weather in the world! I thought I kinda liked the idea of visiting Europe, but most of them are super rude and they have bad weather. Maybe Greece, but sure not as friendly as South Africa.
About the political parties I always question myself if it is necessaty to have so many because there it is all about agreeing or opposing govt. I agree with America on this one
The U.S. could use a couple more parties. The way the system was constructed it basically was made to keep a white male racist patriarchy in place.
Most national institutions (legislative and judiciary) were formed to protect slave owners. How at this point in time the system hasn’t been updated speaks to the fact that the political will of the people is thwarted by a few.
Racism helps them maintain it because white people don’t get that they suffer almost as much as Black Americans. As the late President Lyndon Bains Johnson said (and I paraphrase), “Just tell the poorest white man he’s better than a Black man and he’ll do and give you whatever you want.” How pathetic is that?

Growing up we used to attend 3 different schools in QwaQwa. Primary, Intermediate and Senior Secondary school.
We also have lower Primary which is Grade 1-3 in multiracial schools. Where I used to live it was Grade 1-4 and it was a black school so we also had 3parts to it but they have chosen to merge the Grade 1-3 schools as part of the rest of Primary
You are right when I arrived in this country somebody asked me if I had clothes on I told him I was naked and I was sitting next to an American I don’t entertain stupid questions like that

In Eastern Cape they still have primary school, junior secondary schools and high schools.
We have lower primary grade 1-4 then higher primary 5-7 then high school 8-12. However some schools do combine primary schools grade 1-7 however not all schools do that
Not just Americans many countries have a different idea of Africa.i remember in grade 12 we had this students from Norway one of them told me she was shocked to find my town this developed
They have also senior secondary schools besides high school

We do have elementary but no middle school.
When I still worked in marketing I went to an international military airshow to work there at the South African exhibition stand. There I spoke to a lady from Texas who's in the military and when she heard that I'm from South Africa she asked me if we have people who cleans up the ostrich poop in the cities after the flocks of ostriches flew over. I had to explain to her that ostriches are flightless. As I spoke to the Americans I found them to be so gullible. Many Americans think that South Africans are barbarians that still run around naked in the jungle.

I am from Pretoria I attended middle school from grade 7 to 9 even now they still exist.though I know in south africa we don't have majority of middle schools. But we do have Pretoria north is where u will find such. I am from there and attended them

I am South African. Once someone asked me "How can your mother drive?" I said "what do mean?" They then said, "didnt you ride on elephants in South Africa?" Like, why would we be riding on elephants? Hmmm? We have cars 😂 Also another time we were welcomed in a new school in a new country with a song. They sang it in Zulu. We dont even speak zulu, we speak Afrikaans. It was still very sweet of them to welcome us in the language that they thought we were speaking. 🤣
Afrikaans is of Dutch origin. Zulu is more South African and African than a Dutch derived language. Probably that's why they spoke to you in Zulu

It is a mixture of Yes Dutch, but also German and Hugenotte French, Cape Malay and Zulu, Sotho, Xhosa, Ndebele and even a bit of the San language. Afrikaans is an African language and Afrikaners are Africans.
@Stephan Erasmus What word in Afrinkaans is Zulu or Xhosa? Dutch people, Cape Malay people, French etc are not native to South Africa so how can a language that has their dialect be South African?

Regarding the political part. Personally I would prefer less. maybe 4 would be enough.we do not have many different political poles, with these new political parties now it's just a matter of dividing votes. with offerings being similar variants of major political parties.
The crime rate in SA is exaggerated by the media in comparison to the US South Africa is a walk in the park. Im fom Soweto now living Emlazi its a peaceful place. When one incident happens ull hear about it for years to come and thats how a place gets a bad name. In reality SA is far more peacefull.
We used to have " active shooter" and bomb drills in schools in the 1970's and 80's because we were a country at war at the time and bombings did happen.

Completed my matric in 2005 and we have Primarily school, Middle school where you learn around 10 - 12 subjects as a preparation to high where you choose streams and High School where you choose a stream eg Commercial subjects, Science and Physics subjects ,History Subjects, Geography subjects and Travel and Tourism subjects. If you didn't want Mercantile law you would swap it with Travel and Tourism
My high school subjects
1. Setswana first language
2. English second language
3. Afrikaans second language
5. Accounting
6. Business Economics
7. Economic
8. Maths ( not pure Maths but commercial Maths)
9. Mercantile Law

@@AngelHutchinson as you said, we have no middle schools in SA unless he is referring to a secondary school. In the olden days some shools ended with Form 3 (now grade 10) but they dont exist anymore. The name "secondary" might still remain but all those schools now go up to Matric level
Middle School is NOT a thing in SA.....even if you went to a school that had this distinction.
But y'all can't deny or debate the setup of where i schooled because it's same till date.

Africans must never take pride that we conduct business in foreign languages, the fact that we use foreign languages proves a certain level of deficits. We should learn English, Arabic, Portuguese and French to understand them. Language means more, it is a unifier and forms part of your Identity, which is why we have Francophone. .

We actually have people in jail right now serving a sentence on terrorism its not that it doesn't exsist its just not normal. Plus our SWAT teams the STF is just as good as their American counterparts just that our guys can do what they do in half the time. Only 2% of STF recruits passes selection they train to be a paramilitary in a police setting for ultra high risk scenarios best of the best only about 100 of them servicing the whole South africa the 25th largest country by landmass.

No beloved English is not the first "official" language. All 11 languages are "Official" they were voted Official languages. That's why In our Parliaments we can debate in all 11 languages 12 by sign language.
Years ago Afrikaans was the "Official" language and English was just the second language.

South Africa is the only country in the world where all 11 languages are official languages. Afrikaans was the official state language prior 1990.
I can tell you are young. 😂 1995 was when most things in South Africa were changed and decided. Mandela also made sure that police do not brutalise people.
