  • This is a very inexpensive way to easily baste a quilt using PVC pipe that can be broken down into different sizes for easy storage. A different spin on assembling a quilt.

    I really appreciated your video, now to head off to the plumbing supplies to get some poly pipe. This quilt is queen sized so the basting chore will be made so much easier . ❤️👍🇦🇺

    I am so relieved that I have watched this. I will certainly be trying this for my next quilt which I have been agonising over how to get everything so smooth before I baste it. Thank you!

      It really does work well for me, and I love how I can make it as big or small as I need it to be. I have had many comments about the music, it was one of the first videos I made, and I have since learned less is more when I speed up video, I don't use to much music anymore, lol

      @@SewingAlchemy The music isn't bad for the fast forwarding part but I was really glad you didn't have it playing while you were talking. I know some people don't mind but I find it distracting in other videos I've watched. I have only completed a baby quilt so far and am getting ready to baste my first large quilt. I will definitely use your method. Thanks so much!

    I have that same picture of the little girl with the dog and the same frame too. My grandmother gave me that picture. Thank you for the advice on how to use pvc pipe. I just finished a huge king size quilt and basted it on the floor. After I was done my knees and wrists killed me. I forgot this idea.

    I use a similar setup but use PVC pipe insulation that I have cut into approximately 1 yd sections, which are easy to store. I tape the sections together with painter's tape so I can add or subtract a section depending on the size of the quilt. I tape the edge of the fabric to the insulation with painter's tape. I agree -- this method works well!

    I like the PVC idea. Most of the quilts I make are large and pool noodles just seem like a lot of trouble hooking them together. I don’t have a lot of storage places for long glued together pool noodles.

    • @SewingAlchemy

      It's nice because you can put the pieces just about anywhere, and if your just doing a baby quilt you only need one small piece for each layer. It's versatile!

    Very similar to the method Sharon Schamber used (ruclips.net/video/bhwNylePFAA/видео.html) and I think rather than hand sewing (as Sharon does) or pinning (as you do JoAnn), you could spray baste section by section. Thanks for this! A great way to control the layers on a large quilt and avoid basting on hands and knees.

    Do you roll the top from the right or wrong side? Looks like you rolled it on the wrong side and unrolled it from the right side??

    • @SewingAlchemy
      @SewingAlchemy  5 лет назад +2

      You are absolutely right! I thought I had edited that out of the video, I did roll it wrong in the beginning, this video was one of the first videos I had ever recorded, and I was nervous. I rerecorded that, and still managed to put the wrong way in there, I am really sorry for that. I didn't even catch it. I does need to be rolled on the right side. Good Eye!!! I think I will have to make a new version of the video soon. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

    Great tip. Thanks. But what size diameter pipe did you get. It looks like it might be 40mm to me. Not sure what that is in inches but 1” = 25mm. So is your pipe around 1.5” ?

    • @SewingAlchemy
      @SewingAlchemy  5 лет назад

      I do believe the pipe is 2 inch, but you could even go a little bigger, I will double check it. Home depot cut it for me, but you can go with any lengths your comfortable with.

      @sehryn 5 лет назад +1

      JoAnn Harvey Thank you. Yes please check thanks.
      As soon as I know the size I’m ordering it. Such a great idea. I appreciate it because Ive got a stack of tops Ive been reluctant to baste because of getting creases in the layers.
      But I don’t think I will be getting any of those once I use your method. I cant thank you enough

    • @SewingAlchemy

    Looks great, but why not roll ALL 3 pieces on a single pipe and then pin? That's what my mother did. What are the draw backs?

    • @SewingAlchemy
      @SewingAlchemy  5 лет назад +1

      Wouldn't that mean she has to get the layers laid out flat first and put them together first? That method works good for her, this method just works really well for me.

  • @crazy4doxies440
    @crazy4doxies440 5 лет назад +1

    Liked the video but would suggest that you don’t edit with music as it is very distracting and I always mute and I know you were speaking at times but I wouldn’t hear it because I muted. Also, the other thing i would be really interested in is seeing the back after you basted it to see if there were any bubbles and then the finished quilt so we could see how it turned out.

    • @SewingAlchemy
      @SewingAlchemy  5 лет назад

      I completely agree, that was i think the second video I ever made, I have since taken it very easy with the music, lol
      I have been strongly thinking about remaking that video, and I have another video where I quilt that actual quilt, but I dont think I showed the back. I can say I had that thing folded up for at least 6 months got it out gave it a shake, and there wasnt one wrinkle on the back. I can post a couple pics on my Facebook channel that's linked on my main RUclips page if you would like.
