Hello Melanies family I hope you are doing well and maybe your hearts are healing as best they can. I think of her often and wonder about y’all. Thank you for leaving her teachings for us here I greatly appreciate it and we can still see her beautiful face . God bless you all ❤️
I've watched seven videos on basting tonight and yours is genius! The other ways were so complicated. I'm headed to buy my roller wood tomorrow. Thank you so much. You cannot imagine how relieved I am to see your video. I've been procrastinating basting for weeks because I know how hard it is to tape a huge 98" by 86" quilt to the floor with no puckers. A friend was going to show me what other friends say is a great way to baste but the coronavirus scurge put a halt to that. You even have a way to spray baste with your rollers. Even though I will still be working on the floor, at least I think it will turn out better. (I might sneak into my church's building and use some of the old tables in the basement and not even have to work on the floor.)
Thank you for sharing this technique. I bought 3 pieces of PVC pipe, had them cut to size for free, and was able to pin my quilt so, so easily. It is the best basting I have ever had and nice to sit at the table to do it. Highly recommend!
How do you get the fabric to pull evenly as you roll? Mine tries to slide to one side or the other and my table is not wide enough to pull in there. I should mention it’s felts so it has a bit of stretch to it.
Hi Everyone! I recently taught this method inside my private quilt along class, but I loved it so much I wanted to share it with my entire audience! I hope you enjoy! If you want to see what things I currently have available, you can visit melaniesmakers.com!
As soon as I saw this video I went straight to Lowe’s. I just happen to be at this stage with the quilt that I am working on. I am happy to report that this worked technique works great. Basting the quilt went quickly and it definitely saved my back and knees. Thank you for sharing.
Great ideas. I am new to quilting and am starting with a large block pattern and a yarn quilt tying. I had no idea how to get the backing and the batting aligned and pinned together, and here you are with an answer. Thank you. Lynn
Thanks so much!!! This is definitely a technique I am going to use for my next quilt!! I live in a small apartment so even floor space is hard to find for basting my quilt but trying to hang everything from the wall is very unpredictable and uncomfortable to do all the stretching!! I thank you for sharing this amazing technique as it is going to be a game changer!!!
What a great idea!! I just don't have the floor space in my house (we have mostly carpet). I've spent way too much "knee-aching" time on the floor and it will be nice to come up on the table and get a smooth quilt sandwich. Nothing more aggravating than spending all that time on the floor pin basting your heartfelt quilt only to find out you folded a small part of your quilt and didn't catch it! Thanks
I want to tell you (fyi) that worked, I also use regular LG. safety pins to baste, I took all my corks and cut them into pieces now I use my straight pins with corks at the tips they work Great!!! and cost me a little time I find they are easier when sewing. I saw the little colorful pin corks for sale (expensive) and thought about my bag of corks it worked. Also when embroidering on my small hoop (and doing appliques) I use used dryer sheets I have not had any problems yet yeah!!!!! Love your videos
Thank you so much for showing this technique! I am pretty much a self taught quilter and my current method of trying to lay everything on the floor was not working well for me! You are the best!
Pure genius, thank you for sharing this, I'm really restricted on space so this is going to save me so much time and energy and most importantly it's going to save my back and knees from basting on the floor! Love the quilt too, beautiful combo of colour.
I love this idea! I wish I had seen this video earlier today before I moved furniture and spent the afternoon crawling on the floor while pinning my quilt. Oh, my 66 year old back hurts! I will definitely try this idea next time. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing this tutorial, Melanie! I noticed that you used squared rollers instead of round. What made you choose that instead of other rollers? Is it easier to use squared boards over let's say a regular, round foam roller? Thanks again!
I'm about to baste the first quilt I've ever done. Its a twin size. I was not looking forward to crawling around on the floor with those safety pins! I'm going out to get some pool noodles or dowel rods right now!
I've been trying to decide safety pins to use, but all brands have negative reviews of the pins being dull and worthless. I was wondering what brand do you use and what your thoughts on those negative reviews. Thanks! Thank you for your videos. I'm new to quilting trying to battle anxiety and to donate my quilts to charity.
What does the back look like after you have pinned? Mine is very wrinkly, even though I kept smoothing as I went and the top stayed really flat. I can’t use spray basting because of a chemical sensitivity. Thanks!
Hi Melanie! This is a great video. I'm definitely going to try this!! Question: What are the dimensions of your work table to get the whole quilt to fit?
Where was this last night? I was on the floor pin basting with each layer taped to the floor 😳😂 thank you for sharing I also know what to do with scraps of trim.
I've used this method in the past. It's actually my preferred method to baste since I don't have a big enough floor space for most of my quilts (plus they're mostly all carpeted). My quilts almost never fit fully on the table unless I'm making a baby quilt. I let the excess quilt hang over the end of the table as I'm rolling the quilt. If it's too heavy and starts to drag then I'll put some chairs up at the end to 'catch' the quilt. That also prevents my cats from playing with it. My quilts often don't fit width-wise either. I just try to center the quilt on the table as much as possible. Once you get a few rolls in, it seems to stabilize itself and the overhang doesn't really make a difference. If you google 'board basting' there are loads of different blog posts and videos that give more tips.
This is great, thank you for sharing this method, I will get better results now as I have rheumatoid arthritis and can't do it on the floor. I do have a question, now you have the long arm machine and frame, why are you safety pinning your quilts? I thought the rollers did that same job on the frame. Or, are you just showing this to us to help us? :)

Great method! I know my back always kills me when I get up from pinning on the floor. I LOVE the bright, neon-ish colors in your quilt! Beautiful! 💕

Finally ! somebody has shown me a good example of how to put the darned thing together. Thank you so much.

Your wonderful technique has been a super answer for sanwiching my big quilts....
Tons of thanks
So glad I came across this. This will save my back from the one part of quilt making that has always bothered me. Thank you so much.
This is genius! I will definitely be using this method, I don't have enough floor space to lay a large quilt out so this is perfect! Thank you.
God bless your soul! I am still learning even though you are no longer with us! You are missed!
Thank you. I cherish all that you shared with us.

Thank you!!! You make the best quilting and sewing tutorials!!! 👍🏼👍🏼
That's the Best Thing I've seen Since Sliced Bread!

This is great, I don't have a hard floor in my house so I'll use this method moving forward.
Thank you for sharing this tutorial, Melanie! I noticed that you used squared rollers instead of round. What made you choose that instead of other rollers? Is it easier to use squared boards over let's say a regular, round foam roller? Thanks again!
Thank you very much for doing that.
I am looking forward to trying this.
Your quilt was beautiful
I use this method. It works really well. Great tutorial!!

Love it! Thank you, your video was very helpful.
I love this method! So going try this out! Thank you for sharing this.
Rip you will be missed praying for your family 😢
Thank you! This a great method!

Hi Melanie! This is a great video. I'm definitely going to try this!! Question: What are the dimensions of your work table to get the whole quilt to fit?
Thank you for the demo. I will be trying this soon.
Something I will try with my next quilt.
Where was this last night? I was on the floor pin basting with each layer taped to the floor 😳😂 thank you for sharing I also know what to do with scraps of trim.
What a great idea!!!!
I like this, but I do mine in the garage, so its hard to keep it from touching the floor. Any ideas?
Hi Melanie!! Could you tell me how long your boards are? Thanks so much!!
Great tutorial. I'm working on a t-shirt quilt and now I won't be on the floor. Thank you!!
WUT.
OMG you may have just changed my life.
This is great!! But what if you don’t have a table long enough to fit the whole quilt?
I've used this method in the past. It's actually my preferred method to baste since I don't have a big enough floor space for most of my quilts (plus they're mostly all carpeted). The quilt I did today was too big for the table so I put my ironing board at the end to make more flat space.
I did this earlier today using pipe insulation.
Hi, Melanie. What a beautiful quilt. I hope you have a great Halloween.
are you going to put this on the frame and quilt it with your longarm?
no I am quilting this on my home machine for the class ;)
See.. I should have read all the comments before making mine. lol. This explains it. Thank you :)
I have my boards now can't wait to use this as I have a bad back and a lot of unfinished quilt tops Thanku
Great! Thanks. 😄
Do you prefer the 1 x 2 vs a round object?
This was what was available to me and small to store. I have seen both so I think you can go with what you think you would like better.
Thanks Melanie. I appreciate your time teaching , especially as a busy mama, wife and friendly to all!!!!
How long were your boards?
Thanks that’s very informative

Isn't that a long arm machine to your right?
Wow, ❤🌹👏👍👌
l love you.
