- In the middle of a pretty awful 1961 martial arts exploitation film titled "Karate - Fist of Death" we find a rare gem: a five minute sequence showing training at the first post-war Shotokan Honbu dojo. Kanazawa, Nishiyma, Okazaki an other karate masters are shown during free sparring, kata, and self-defense demonstrations. To a karate historian this sequence from this movie is priceless: we see the interior of the dojo (which some of us may recognize after reading Moving Zen), plus we see the by-gone masters in their prime.

At 7:45 seconds, the center karateka is Master Takayuki Mikami, 9th Dan, Founder and Chief Instructor of the JKA/AF. He resides in Metairie, LA
Awesome, thanks!
What a find, thx for sharing it! The style has evolved a great deal. Surprised not to see Sensei Nakayama there.
Thanks! I thought that I watched every publicly available Shotokan historical video until I found this. Hopefully there are more out there!
Hello, from minute 6:20 the partner of Nishiyama is Hiroshi Shirai, the father of Karate in Italy.
Thank you! I didn't recognize him, even though about 25 years ago attended an awesome seminar with him.
It ’s a very interesting video. Thank you. Oss.
If I'm not mistaken, that was Mikami Takayuki leading the group while performing Hangetsu.
Yes, that is Mikami sensei.
Nishiyama was a BEAST in his youth!
No, just dedicated and very intelligent!
Compared with some of todays karate people, he would now appear weak and poor at both kumite and self defense. Sorry to break your bubble.
I really enjoy watching these old videos & enjoyed C.W. Nicol's 'Moving Zen'. On other instructors - I am pretty sure Nishiyama Sensei's partner was Shirai Sensei.
The Sensei sitting on the chair might be Hiroshi Shoji
In the kata trio, the Sensei at the middle might be Takayuki Mikami
At 5:23 the defender at the sitting position I'm pretty sure is Shoji Hiroshi
The Sensei attacking Nishiyama might be Hiroshi Shirai
their hq has changed a bit, fascinating piece of history
Thank you! One of my goals is to find films from all 4 historical Shotokan - JKA honbu dojo that clearly show the interiors. I think I have them all, but still need to verify and put the video together.
Sensei NISHIYAMA - of course he is a intelligent gentleman- great master. founder of ITKF.
He was, but is no longer with us. He was also a heavy smoker and drinker and lived his later years in poor health. Not a great role model for our youth.
