buffer? spend $20 extra on cards and the buffer is great, i shoot CRAW and i can smash 140 shots (9+ seconds) of pics on EFC mode or something like 80(2.5+ seconds) on electronic shutter and the buffer clears in 5 seconds or so, if you need to shoot more photos than that i have no idea what you are doing

@@syllycatface I would take a look at the video that he produced about the r7 buffer size and impact to auto/continuous focus. I've experienced this greatly with this camera. Hence is only my B camera for professional work and my travel camera. Primary cameras the Canon R6 Mark II work. I have worked with Rudy and others at Canon and they have confirmed the concerns that I have experienced and Jan. Since I also do professional cycling I like the extra reach of the crop sensor.

I just want the R7 II to come out so the original R7 becomes more affordable. It would be great to have a faster sensor and better EVF on the R7 II but even better would be getting an R7 for cheap.

As a bird photographer, the Canon R7's rolling shutter speed and high-ISO capabilities could be further optimized for capturing avian subjects. A potential R7 Mark II addressing these limitations would be a compelling proposition.

I'd much prefer a Canon R7 mkII, than a R6 mkIII. Generally, I prefer crop sensors for reach, whether it be birds or macro (every time I use a FF camera, and I own them, I realize how much closer you need to be). The R7 is a great little camera, and I've even got to like the dial around the joystick. Resolution is good, and I like the camera in general, but it obviously has the limitation of rolling shutter, and a lower resolution EVF, which isn't too bad. But give it a stacked sensor, a decent buffer, and just a moderate EVF upgrade, and it would be a killer wildlife camera. I mean, if it was 32mp or better, had a better pre-shooting implementation, and a stacked sensor, I wouldn't be looking for anything more. I could see my days out, with what Canon has now, but welcome more.

they certainly have a lot to improve on the R7; would like to see them drop the MP and go with different shutter assembly. 26-28mp would help a lot with the horrible hi-iso performance, and more gentle curtain action would help minimize the shutter shock/# of soft images this camera produces .. This camera for me at higher frame rates creates far too many images that lose critical sharpness and become unusable. going into a shoot knowing arbitrary images will be unexplainably soft makes me hesitant and promotes overshooting, these are two variables no photog wants to add to a shoot!

Add some legit video codecs, gyro data, snd gorgeous screen/EVF, I’d gladly throw $2k+ at this. Don’t need global shutter, don’t need 35mp, don’t need IBIS, don’t need to record 30 min at a time at 4k120, etc etc. be a good move on Canon’s part to make a Pro R7 body alongside the normal style crop body they produce.

I agree with you, R7 is a good camera with some some significant shortcomings, yet it was a commercial succes with the prosummers wildlife photographers.
An R7 mk ii with a fast readout sensor and improved autofocus would be a great combo with the rf 100-500mm or the 200-800mm and would be very interesting for the growing segment of wildlife photographers.

The kind of upgrades that are needed would catapult this camera into a completely different price point. I don't see that happening. Probably a few small incremental upgrades to keep people buying. The buffer is horrendous, autofocus and IQ mediocre and ISO performance lousy. Probably see the same exact camera with all of these parameters marginally better to keep the price close to where it is. Most bird photographers eventually move on to full frame because they realize the shortcomings of these crop sensor offerings.

    • @PaulBawby
      @PaulBawby 3 месяца назад

@@christophercarlimages9003I didn’t say anything about maintaining the price point.
Canon has proven, yet again, that there’s a market for an APS-C pro-summer wildlife camera and many wildlife RUclipsrs have mentioned that though the R7 currently has shortcomings it could be a great camera when reach is critical (like with small, fast moving birds) with some significant upgrades.
Yes there are drawbacks to cameras with APS-C sized sensors, but cameras like the venerable Nikon D500 are the proof that full frame isn’t necessarily the only way to go.
As someone who’s had a great number of photos published in national publications I can tell you that the customer doesn’t care about what format you use, it’s mostly about the emotion conveyed by the photo (and I have shot with MFT, APS-C and full frame). I’m not saying that IQ isn’t important, but it’s not their main concern.
If you don’t like the idea of an R7 mk II, that’s totally up to you, but by making such a camera, Canon could position themselves as leader in a very lucrative growing market by offering products that others don’t have. And yes eventually some of the R7 buyers might even see the light (pun intended) and may decide to get a full frame camera, but by then they’ll probably already be significantly invested in RF glass…

@@christophercarlimages9003 "The kind of upgrades that are needed would catapult this camera into a completely different price point." I don't think I said anything about the price point of the R7 mk II. I'm usually fine with paying for quality gear.
"The buffer is horrendous, autofocus and IQ mediocre and ISO performance lousy." I think it would be fair to say that you don't have a high opinion of the R7. Having used the R7 since it first came out, I find your evaluation to be generally accurate about the shortcomings but overly harsh. Of all my cameras, it's not my favorite camera but, if you know how to use it you can get some amazing results despite it's shortcomings.
"Most bird photographers eventually move on to full frame because they realize the shortcomings of these crop sensor offerings". There's no perfect camera system, there's always a compromise it's either cost, weight, ISO performance,... Having shot with MFT, APS-C and full frame and having had numerous photos published nationally, I can assure you that the clients don't care about the gear you use to make the shot, the care about the story the photo conveys. Nowadays with all the fancy software that exists, high ISO shots are not as much of an issue as they use to be. I find that crop sensors cameras can be a valuable asset when shooting smaller fast moving birds or animals. The venerable Nikon D500 is a fine example of how good an APS-C camera can be.
Despite the shortcomings of the R7, Canon has proved that an APS-C camera geared towards pro-summer wildlife photographer can be a commercial success. It would be nice to see them push the R7 forward by addressing it's shortcomings like they did for the R6 and like they're rumoured to be willing to to do for the R5 and the R6 mk II. It's good to have options and choices.
Happy fourth of July and cheers mate

Because honestly I would pay near double the current R7 price for an R7mkII that has an updated sensor with better low light/DR and autofocus and current R5 levels of rolling shutter in electronic mode even if they dropped back to 20-25fps in electronic mode instead of spending possibly AU$7000 for an R5mkII. Fuji have that in their high end crop camera, so Canon should be able to do that too. Specially because they make their own sencors. I am currently using the r7, and yes, the read out speed is terrible. But the quality of the files, when it's not showing it really great. I would rather prefer a 24-26mp stacked than the 32,5 that we have now. Think that could work out very well, and give it a even better low light performance.

I'd say that the R3 is a dead duck. There's no point in it when they have an R1 and R5II. With the R5II and R1 it makes sense to upgrade to a R6III. The new sensor will also further differentiate the R6III from the R8. I've got an R6 and R7 and would probably go for the R6III. A couple of reasons Canon may want to introduce a new R6iii… One- as you mentioned, the ability to use the new battery grip with cooling feature designed for the R5ii. Two- the ability to fully host the new Canon lenses with an aperture ring like the 24-105 f2.8. That’s in addition to normal process of iterating to stay ahead of your competitors.
Of course the problem is, if you can get a R6iii with a stacked sensor with the likely improvements in AF, rolling shutter, view finder black-out, etc…. do you need a R3 or R1?
I’ve believed for some time the R3 line is already dead. Though put the new 45mp stacked sensor from the R5ii in a R3-like body and you’ve really got something. Call it the R2…

It is interesting that Canon considers a 24MP camera their 'flagship' model, as you said it seems that sports photographers are their most influential/targeted users. Maybe it makes business sense, but definitely leaves a bad taste for those who want a higher MP camera that is weather-sealed. It would be interesting to know if sports journalists even use RAW or if JPG is sufficient if speed to submit images is most crucial.

One infuriating thing about the R6-II is the inability to save settings to a card. This could be easily fixed in firmware, but I doubt it will be. R7 mk ii needs a new sensor. That sensor has been around for several years, in the 90D and M6ii. It shows its age in noise and rolling shutter. 30MP with a fast readout would be optimal. At the same time, the mechanical shutter is too loud and affected by vibration. Personally I’m happy with the size and ergonomics, and don’t need a battery grip. Keep it small!

As you somewhat alluded to, perhaps they might also be considering offloading the excellent R3 sensor that is already proven with BSI/Stacked configuration to allow the next R3 to have a global shutter.

As much as we’d think an R7ii is needed for the reasons you laid out, unfortunately none of the direct competitors really “beat” it outright: they all have strengths and weaknesses. The a6700 probably comes the close to being overtly superior, but even that has ergonomics, single card slot, menus, screen resolution, sensor resolution, and overheating issues that the R7 compares favorably to. From Canon’s view there’s probably no need for them to rush out a sequel.

    • @christophercarlimages9003

It's a big seller for them precisely because of the price point and lack of competition. I doubt they do anything substantial in a MK2. The price point has to stay where it is so they can continue their new business model of high volume value cameras. Anything substantial would raise the price to the point of the R6 which is a far superior camera.

Well the original R6 took it's sensor from the Flagship Canon DSLR so maybe it's fitting that the R6iii takes it's sensor from the R3. Nor do I think Canon can just sit back and wait with the just Released Nikon Z6iii and the pending Sony a7V. I doubt Canon feels really rushed in the cropped Arena since neither Nikon nor Sony are really pushing boundaries there either. Their Bread and Butter is their R5/R6 series so certainly that will be their Main Focus.

spot on re: R6II; while i wish it had 4k120, gotta say i end up with pretty great results using Topaz to upscale the HD 120/180fps to 4k. Certainly not optimal and adds another step, but most of the time works incredibly better than expected. made the decision to get 2x R6II vs 1 R5 for nearly the same money, and overall could not be happier with this decision.
where the R6III would be advantageous is if they. improve the buffer, don't like to rely on CRAW to get usable bursts. while CRAW is handy and useful in a lot of ways, i just don't like the IQ degradation beyond iso6400 or so.

Great video and information. I am about landscape and big animals (bears, wolf, moose...) I have r8 for weight/backpacking and R5 for landscape on tripod/wildlife. I am tempted buy the r7 for the effective reach - 33mpx in apsc is equivalent to 85mpx cropped on R5 with lessor a/f performance. But sometimes in wide open spaces (arctic, Yellowstone) in good light even my 600f4/1.4x is not long enough. 2x sucks. I really don't find r6ii or iii attractive (limited crop) at 24mpx (and heavier and more expensive than r8). But better a/f, bigger buffer and/or iso on r7II would likely push me over the edge, especially with my rf100-400, 200-800, 200-400f4 and 600f4.

As an R3 owner, it's quite annoying that they have not added any major features beyond the "Panning Assist" function added last year. Given its big buffer, I have no doubt they could have added a proper pre-capture function. Also, still no focus breathing compensation for video either, or better video tools like waveform or more customizable zebras (color and stripe size for example when using Zebra 1 + 2). They are almost playing the Sony game with a total lack of updates at the top of their model line.

Hi Jan, with R1, R5ii and maybe R6iii all taking over stuff from the R3, it looks indeed like Canon is not expecting to sell much more of this Canon tech pioneer until maybe next years they'll bring a global shutter R3ii .. although I'm not sure whether the R1 will leave enough room for it.
People wanting to stick to SD cards didn't yet experience the much better value for money provided by CFxB cards. The only downside is the need for an external card reader, while SD cards have a slot in my laptop. When also the R6iii would get CFxB, I fear the only real reason for the R5ii to only get 1 CFxB seems to be the heat management. So if you have a CFexpress Type B Version 4 card which theoretically supports up to 4GB/s and your camera only supports Version 3 cards (max. 2GB/s) you may have a faster card which could be used but run slower on your camera than a faster Version 3 card. And I doubt at the moment that there are any cameras which support Version 4.

    Nice video Jan,
You love 24MP cameras don't you?
I really like my R6ii especially paired up with my RF200-800 which for me is nearly ideal for my bird photography but I would definitely buy an R6iii if it has a stacked sensor and a CF express card as this would fix the 2 main limitations of my R6ii : rolling shutter and small buffer.
24 MP is plenty: I'm not at all interested in higher MP as this would just slow things down with huge files and I see almost no benefit.
I would also love higher frame rates in both stills and video and even better autofocus and tracking.
I would like the stills/video switch on the righthand side where it belongs so you can reach it with your right hand and the power switch can be on the left out of the way and just get rid of the idiotic lock switch entirely.
A new battery grip with the multi controller in the same place in vertical as in horizontal would be welcome too.
A useable pre capture option would be welcome too and I'd like an option to customise the shutter button so that half press would be single shot or slow frame rate and full press would be high frame rate.
The 6 series is very popular and it's in the most competitive segment of the market so I think it makes a lot of sense to have better performance than the competition. Canon replaced the original R6 after only 2 years for the same reasons.
The R7 was very disappointing with terrible performance in many ways and weird controls which probably work fine but why change what's not broken?
A new R7ii with a stacked sensor and normal canon controls like an R6 would be popular even if that made it more expensive but personally I'd never buy a crop sensor camera again.
    Cheers

Most comments are about a potential R7.2 Thats what I am excited about as well. One with no rolling shutter, quieter, bigger buffer, a third wheel, better AF. Not asking much

From what I’ve heard from the photographic community in Hong Kong, the R6 II is hugely discounted due to poor sales performance. It hasn’t sold well since its release, where as the R8 did exponentially better. People did not think the R6II at its original rrp was worth it but at its discounted price now it’s definitely a camera worth getting. I bought mine early this year at the discounted price and I’m happy with it, it’s a camera I can grow with, it’s my first full frame camera. I wouldn’t be upgrading again unless Canon comes up with a full frame 30+mp. Canon is really lacking in this area, sure hope they release one within next 2 years.

I skipped the R7 because there was no battery grip. Seems trivial but it is what it is. A 6III does sound interesting. As far as what cards I go for, I am so ADD with that. I got some of all. Junk on up.

I realize that different people probably develop bodies and lenses but it feels like canon lenses are in much higher demand than new bodies in general. 35mm f1. 4 is good but there is still such a gap for f1.4 and f1.8 lenses.

I'm excited about the R5m2 coming soon. I currently have a R6m2, but would be looking for a higher MP sensor and the use of a CF express card. By the way, can you all help me understand why all cameras aren't switching to using CF express cards exclusively? As understand it, a CFe card can write to a card about 2-3 times faster than to a SD Card. Wouldn't/Doesn't that mean we would be able to take more photos before hitting the buffer/"Busy" downtime?

I’ve wondered the same thing. And in cameras that do have cfx cards, why do they only use one instead of 2, especially since the camera is limited by the speed of the sd card? I wouldn’t think it would cost more money to put cfx slots in instead of sd slots.

They seem to think SD cards are convenient since most laptops have a reader built in unlike for a CFx card

@@christophercarlimages9003 possibly, yet I would bet most serious photographers, both amateur and professional, use card readers. Either way, I wish they would switch to dual cfx cards.

That to me says that Canon is marketing these cameras to hobbyists and not anyone very serious about photography.

Hi Jan; Really nice video as always Jan, I want to know which camera is better for bird photography, the R7 or the old version of the R6. What are your thoughts? I think that even though the R7 has more megapixels I still think that the R6 has better image quality and sharpness because of its full frame sensor. Your videos are so helpful and clear to understand. /Bird Photographer from Switzerland 🙃

I would be tempted by the R7 in that case, but it comes down to if you prefer reach or better IQ and handling

In case Canon actually brings a canon R6 III soon. they would have brought out two Mid-range priced cameras before Sony has updated the A7 IV... That would be kinda devastating and exposing for Sony...

I already thought the R6 Mark 2 came way too soon after the R6 Mark 1. Still feal a bit robbed as I took the lifecycle of canon cameras into account before the release of the R6. Things are followed up way sooner these days, and firmware updates with new features is a no go for canon on my R6. Hope Canon realizes this for their loyal customers with cameras which still are great and now just 4 years old (and no real updates anymore…)

They need to roll out a lot more firmware updates for legacy users but they won’t, as it doesn’t make any money for Canon to do so 😢

overheating, rolling shutter/image wobbles hopefully much better buffer and working pre-capture

I'd like Canon to repeat their strategy similar to the 5Ds and 5Dsr series offerings.
They offered a camera model with, and without, a low-pass filter.
Most wildlife and landscape photographers aren't too concerned with moire.
This also would make Canon more competitive against Sony and Nikon.
I'd love to have an R5ii option without the low-pass filter.

I'm still very happy with my 512gb card from Sabrent. 150€ for a CFe Type B of that capacity is pretty good and the slightly slower sustained speed of 500mb/s or so it's plenty fast enough for my Z7 II.

Canon has the R6 series on the cell phone cycle schedule. Everyone saying they want a refresh of a R7, a mid 2022 camera, tells me canon is underperforming. .

You lose all touch screen functionality on the R6 II if you use an external monitor too. I haven’t seen any reviewers talk about this problem.
