I just upgraded my wife’s camera from the R7 to the R6II and then taught her how the back button eye detection and then the spot auto focus worked, and she was blown away! The smiles were well worth the upgrade! I was a game changer. I no longer have to hear her getting angry and cussing, because her camera wont focus anymore! Thanks for all your help fellas. Cheers!
Very clever, as it makes her less likely to critique your new gear :). Seriously, though, my wife and I just went on a long birding trip to celebrate our 40th anniversary, a relationship sustained in large part by our shared interest in birding and bird photography. Thanks for sharing an uplifting story..
Whenever there are several birds in the frame, I either use spot focusing or the control stick to focus on the one I want, and then I press 'start/stop whole area AF' in order to lock the AF to my target. After that I can recompose all day long while the focus stays put as long as it still sees the bird. That makes focusing on a specific animal in a group super easy. The function can be set to any button in the customization menu. When my R6mII can do this, the R5mII surely can do it just as well. Hope this is helpful. Have a good one! :)
Just finished and yes I absolutely did 🙏🏻 Amazing captures from your trip. What do you think about the pre burst. Are there any problems with the focus in this mode like it’s to slow or something and you get images that are not sharp ?
Really enjoyed the show! As an enthousiast bird photographer, I can really relate to your experiences. Also, I'm really happy you guys got to bird together again, health and costs permitting. Australia is awesome, I visited the west coast 15yrs ago when I was not a birder but merely a nature enthousiast. I learned a lot this session (again). Enjoy your time together, guys!
Hi Jan just wanted to jump on and say I bought your Masterclasses and I absolutely LOVE them. I have really only just started but I have learnt some really valuable editing tips already so I am one very happy customer.
That what l love about this camera is l set it to 5 fps then set up a boost button so if bird takes flight the boost button can be pressed going to H+ which l set at 20fps so l don’t end up with hundreds of the same photo.
Great to see you both together and trust you had an amazing trip. I have received my new Canon R5 mark ii and set it up based on your guide and Jans video. Then a couple of days ago I went out to use the camera for the first time. It is the rutting season in Denmark right now so I photographed some red deer stags. To my frustration, the camera struggled a lot when using the auto eye detection and I often had to use the single point focus on the eye. Hopefully, this is only related to this specific subject. Best Steen
Excellent work guys. For birds in the bush/tree I am currently setting eye detection = auto, whole area tracking = OFF, limiting AF areas to point focus *with* eye focus and point focus with *no* eye focus, and assigning a button to toggle between these two; this prevents the eye focus from wandering away from the bird. I'm still experimenting with the best button setup for this.
Another excellent video. I was smiling throughout the video as you guys had so many similar experiences like I have with this camera in past one month. More files to scan through, pre capture, high iso in low light, autofocus struggle etc. I hope your camera setup guide is same as it was on day one.
With respect to Glenn's comment about not knowing if you'd upgrade to the mark 2 if you shoot mostly macro at 31:43. The mark 2 supports flash while focus bracketing with user selectable timing between shots. For many macro photographers, this is an important feature.
Hi Jan and Glenn, Thank you for this great Video! 👍 I got my R5 Mark II on August 22, 2024 and I am very satisfied. Later I also got the CF-R20EP battery grip/fan and three additional LP-E6P batteries. Unlike many others, I enjoy photographing and filming mammals the most. Birds and other animals too, but of secondary importance. In my opinion, the noise behavior is no better than the R5. Basically I turned off all assistants like noise reductions. I've (only) two R5 and I saw no real different. But the autofocus on the R5 Mark II was significantly better in low light. But in the twilight after sunset, the R5 Mark II did a good job. R5 Mark II + RF 600mm f/4.0 L IS USM + RF Extender 1.4x Wild boars in front of a bush and the R5 Mark II's autofocus had no problems. The R5 already had problems here. This are the main reasons I bought the R5 Mark II. Better autofocus and better video features and capabilities. I will definitely continue to use one of my two R5s. For me the R5 is still a very good camera. So I don't know yet whether I'll ever buy a second R5 Mark II. Thanks for this nice video and I look forward to seeing more of your videos! 😎 Greetings from Germany Uwe
Great and informative as always. Even though I'm not a Canon shooter, the techniques to taking good images are fairly universal. Really enjoy the field stories and experiences!
Something I find funny: when the R5 was released, everyone would only talk about how "bad" it was. Now it is revered. "They made it too good; it can't be topped. Yes the R52 has better autofocus, but the mark 1 has better dynamic range." 😂
Great video guys, thanks for the files. Manual focus on video is useful sometimes, especially for those tricky small birds in amongst branches, the peak focus helps a lot too
Great to see you together! Received my R5 mk ii yesterday (upgraded from the R5) and used your setup guide today. So far, so good. Thanks for the excellent help and a wonderful episode today.
Awesome vid guys so good to see you together at last! I finally picked up an R5 instead ive been shooting 5D4s for 8 years and pulled the trigger far too late, the R5 has blown me away and I got a really nice used one here in the UK for £1700 which was a complete steal! Il pick an R52 up when they come down in price but so far even the R5 to me is a complete game changer especially with older lenses and tele converters. Lenses and tele combos I would never use before have been unreal! I have a 70-200 F2.8 MKII and a MKII 2x extender but would never use it as I have a 100-400 MKII but ive been in Orlando covering an event but wanted to get into the wetlands and already had 20kg of gear, brought the tele and had an incredible time with it! So flexible and the focus is unbelievable even with an old MKII 2x. Im sure the RF lenses are unreal but still a bit too expensive for me.
Such a nice tour of northern AU birds! Size of bird and lack of contrast in low light can be frustrating with R5 focus sticking on the eye/head. Sunrise is when the best action happens here! One day I was capturing tiny dragonflies and had to manual focus, then shift to my C2 programed settings finally seeing the dragonfly and getting the focus right.
I love these informative videos from the bird show duo. Thanks for putting this together guys, I've been waiting for these in-depth r5 2 reviews. In addition to my r5, I also shoot with a sony a1 that can do 30 fps. To avoid the excessive photo issue, I keep it set to 20 fps. I still get more photos than I'd like to sort through. Cheers fellers!
Looks like you had a great time together. Always so inspiring to listen to you both even though I'm getting my next picture her in the autumn / winter time around Munich. I'm so excited to get my R5 II. Greatings, Bernd
Two new Ambassadors for tourism Australia Glenn and Jan, if that doesn’t get you excited to come Down Under, more than just unbelievable Bird photography. My favourite part was the boat missions and not too forget the hot springs to cool down Glenn, maybe some AirTags for your batteries mate there can be the odd snake in the grass ready to pounce on your battery. 🥂
Good video guys! I have shot with the R5 for years and now have the R5II. The focusing system in my experience is far superior. It tracks the eye on birds in flight whether the bird is flying straight at me from the side, etc... You would think that 20 FPS would be plenty but with 30 FPS I am capturing more favorable wing positions. (yes there's a lot of culling!) I am able to get shots now that would have been impossible with the R5 and yes, I am keeping the R5 for landscape photography...
Fantastic episode, guys. I thoroughly enjoy the way you bounce off each other with the Mickie taking. It's very similar to myself and two bird traveling mates as we are constantly winding each other up!! Keep up the good work it's definitely making me save harder for the R5ii!!!
Not interested in the R5 II, but I always watch your vids for the interesting birds, the back story of your shots, and the perspectives on editing. Thanks.
Great show , loved the countryside ..what a trip you guys had ! Boy you two have come along way from the early days when Jan would ride Glen about his fanny pack !
Jan, I just recently read a great write up on Canon Europe explaining the different stabilizer modes and mode 3 may have solved your issue? Here’s an excerpt Mode 3 is especially useful for sports photography where you are likely to be moving between subjects quickly. In IS Mode 1 this can create a bump or jump within the viewfinder as the IS races to keep up with the lens movements. Instead, by not activating until the shutter button is fully pressed, it saves the system trying to compensate for random, rapid lens motion and compensates only at the point you are taking an image.
Great to see you two both in the same room! I've had the R5 MK II since the day after release. Definitely taking 2 to 3 times as many pictures in a given day than the original R5. I took the new camera to Cape Cod this week and it did very well on a whale watch. With the boat moving at full speed I was actually able to get sharp shots of some shearwaters somewhat far away. I did notice that with single-point AF the eye detection sometimes wants to jump to a different subject. Have you had any video IBIS issues with the 200-800? Sometimes it makes this weird rotational jerky motion. It also happened to me with the 600 f/4 EF MK II lens. The old camera allowed you to edit the videos in camera, whereas this seems to be missing in the new one. The old camera sometimes jerked side to side with that lens at the beginning of a video, and it was easy to trim that out in camera. I broke the memory card door on the Mark II as it bumped up against a metal pole, somewhat of a freak accident. The new camera is now with Canon for repair, and I asked them to check if video IBIS is really working properly. I am now using the original R5 and it did well photographing a rare Little Gull during a ridiculously high tide right up against the shore yesterday in New Hampshire. It was with hundreds of other gulls, and with single-point AF and back-button eye detection, it usually stuck onto the Little Gull. As you were talking about frenzied photos with finches, the same thing happened with these hundreds of gulls feeding and trying not to get wiped out by the gigantic waves. Turns out I got some nice flight shots that didn't even register with me as they happened! Jan, I noticed you are using a 1TB Wyse CFExpress 4.0 card. I tried other brands' 1TB and 512GB 4.0 cards and found it could take up to three seconds to fully wake the camera from sleep, which causes missed shots. I went back to my Sony 256GB 2.0 card and the MKII wakes up in about 1 second or so. I know someone with the ProGrade 512GB 4.0 card, and he says it wakes the camera up in one second.
It depends on the cards and how many images are on the cards as well. The 1TB card seems to be a bit slower than the 512 and 2 TB I use as well. The prograde ones I use wake up fast unless there’s a lot of images on them
I traded my R5 in for the R5 Mkii and have absolutely no regrets except the non availability of spare batteries. As I was travelling overseas, in frustration I purchased 2 power packs that recharge the batteries on the go - just plug into the camera with a c cable - cheaper than spare batteries. Works . This info maybe useful for others also waiting for spare batteries to become available
Loved the video and the humor. I am to weak to handhold my R5 II, but I have used a monopod on various boats, including canoes, with good success. FYI, I purchased a portable power bank with 120 V output AC that cost less than one Canon battery, thinking I could charge my two batteries when I was in the field. Unfortunately, although it worked fine with the Canon charger, it charged less than two batteries although, with the stated output, it should have charged ten. I returned that power bank but would get another if I thought it would work better. Seems outside your area to test and review power banks but I wish someone would.
Thank you for this interesting and informative video. Sounds that the new Canon is a step in the right direction for wildlife shooters. Thank you Jan also for his fantastic new Lightroom Masterclass. Best wishes Roland
Reprogramming the DOF button to use as a speed booster does work, but it does require the use of a third finger (pinky) to hold down the DOF button if you are using back button focusing at the same time. It is a little awkward, but doable. I found it to be too awkward, so instead added the continuous focus speed menu option to “my menu” with the “my menu” screen prioritized to display right away. To avoid having to reach over to the other side of the camera to activate the menu I programmed the set button to also activate the menu. Any functions that I need to get to right away are also added to the “my menu” screen which is displayed right away by pushing the set button. If you still want to program a button as a speed booster without using 3 fingers, you can do it if you have lenses that have function buttons on them like the Rf 200-800 or 600 f/4. They usually come preprogrammed as AF on/off buttons, but can be reprogrammed to be “boost” buttons by assigning the “switch ES continuous shooting modes” function to them. Once you select your desired boost speed / frame rate, it will remain at that setting . The lens function buttons are activated by holding them down, once you let go, you return back to your slower speed. When you aren’t using a lens that has function buttons, you can revert to using the prioritized “my menu” method
Thanks for a fun video. I watched another video featuring a professional photographer using the R5II at the Olympics. He said that he shot about 10,000 images each day for two weeks. He better be a good culler.
I’m always looking forward to your shows, and this was a great one again! As a norwegian I can relate to Glenns experience with the hot conditions. While you lack batteries but have an abundance of bodies, I’ve had batteries and a grip sitting on my desk for three weeks, but still no body. And, the supplier wanted feedback on my experience with my new equipment 🤣. Hopefully it will show up soon… I currently shoot R5 and R3, so the big question is what to do when the R5 mkII shows up. Which one will have to go? Or both, and go for an R1? Or some other solution? Difficult questions to ponder the rest of our autumn before this winters big birdtrip…
Great show. My results with the R5 Mark II are pretty much the same as yours. I note that, for bird photography, the shutter speeds used are on the low side. The pre-capture is awesome and it works well for insects such as butterflies and dragonflies. My order for the camera was completed within 10 minutes of the open window and I got it in the first wave, including the 2 extra batteries I ordered. No mention of eye control. Does anyone think that someone, somewhere will figure out how to use it in real life wild situations? I did not sell my R5 and intend to use it as a backup and for low light situations. A perfect combo, I think.
I use it sometimes, can work well in a group of birds, but it sometimes just becomes really inaccurate and needs to be calibrated a lot, so it's not something I use a lot
I haven't tried the Mark II yet so thanks for all the good info. I had the chance to visit the Atherton Tablelands almost 20 years ago and it was well worth the trouble of getting there from the USA. I do recall it being very dark but the variety of wildlife and the prehistoric flora were amazing. I was shooting with the original Canon 5D so needless to say my low light pictures aren't great. Sad because I don't know when I'll get another chance to photograph a platypus. If I was going to be shooting in those conditions on a regular basis I think I'd probably give up the crop/reach and go with either an R1 or R3 and hope I could get a little closer. I really hate culling but I finally feel like I have a handle on my back catalog, I'm not sure I'm ready for those frame rates plus precapture. I'd likely have it set to a lower FPS.
We were up there a few months ago down at the coast at the Boulders a Platypus swam in a large pool of the river for over half an hour. With people swimming about 20m away. First time seeing one in the wild, and I am 68. They are normally incredibly shy.
@@andrewkeir2282I visited a park that was known to have platypus but I honestly never expected to actually see one. I can't recall the name of the park. Australia is a great country. I've always meant to go back for a return visit.
@@jan_wegenerYes. Maybe Canon can dial the high ISOs and DR in a little better over time in firmware. If not maybe the RAW software will improve. I get it on the MPs. I don’t want to go back to 24 MP
Jan, my husband and I just spent some time on the Atherton Tableland for the first time in many years. We were trying to photograph Victoria’s Riflebird. We ended up finding one to photograph, but it was very high in a tree and a long way away. i was blown away by the Riflebird photographic opportunity Glenn and yourself enjoyed. We are happy to pay for an opportunity like this one you had. We will be returning to the Atherton Tableland again, in a much shorter time frame than previously. However, as we live on the Sunshine Coast it is a special but long journey north. Can you please share the details of where you managed to get your closer encounter with the Riflebird? We would be so very appreciative.
I am thinking of taking a trip up to the FNQ and Darwin for some of the birds you have photographed in this show. They are on my bucket list especially the Rainbow Pittas. I would appreciate it if you could share where in Darwin you shot them at this close range?
What a relief! And exactly what I would have expected from the two of you. There are so many RUclips "influencers" who have simply refused to acknowledge what you said in your conclusion. "There is no perfect camera." With the others, if anyone dares to point out something less than perfect about a camera, the hosts (and disciples) descend on them with fury. There is nothing wrong with an objective look. I may have missed it, but when you were shooting the R5II in the heat (very much like the South Texas heat where I live) were you using the cooling grip? My R5II overheated at a very strange time when I wouldn't have expected it. But I didn't have the grip yet, so maybe that is a factor. I sent mine back. Not because it wasn't a great camera. It was. But I realized that it wasn't the big step up I was looking for in most areas. The AF being the big exception - but I know my R5 so well that AF is rarely the limiting factor.
@@jan_wegener It did. I'm not making a huge deal out of it. But it's truth, and I think that we can help each other by sharing truth instead of emotional responses.
@@jan_wegener There are three different spots in your video that look like you had the grip on your camera. But I asked because I didn't know if you might have recycled some old footage. If you did have the grip attached, it seems like that might have had an influence on the overheat situation. For my part, I think it has a lot to do with air movement in addition to just ambient temperature. But we also regularly run 80%+ humidity. I don't know what other factors might be different. I have a couple of colleagues who are working pros who have both had their R5II's overheat. I'll see if they want to drop by and add their names to the list. But it's not a question of whether it can shut down. It did shut down.
@@RBusinessSchoolI did have the grip on it, but I managed to get my second body to get to 5 bars in quite cold weather, when it was attached via wifi to my phone and in standby for video. I have no doubt that it can overheat, but it does less than the old one
As always guys great job and super selection of birds and seeing you working together. Jan, so now you have used this and the A9 111 and asking as a bird photographer which is best? especially for Af recognition, Regards.
Bust my savings on the R5 which gives me all I need. Yes the mkii is better and I would love one but for me the R5 is fine would need to be a massive improvement for me to consider something.
Fun video to see you both together in real life! Did you have any issues with "freezing/locking up" with the R5ii? Will you be offering a photo tour of Australia in the future? I got my phone call from Camera Canada that my R5ii was in but no extra batteries available so I decided to wait for the next shipment of R5ii and wait for the extra battery.
Really awesome video, thank you. Two questions if you don’t mind, the first is will you be updating the set up guide as you discover more? Second question where did Glenn get his lens hood?
Thanks for the detailed real world use of the R5II. A few weeks ago I decided not to upgrade for the reasons mentioned near the end of your video. I don't photograph birds very often (I do enjoy it) and shoot mostly stills. That brings up an interesting question. Are all your shots prior to you using the R5II not very good or defective? I believe they look stunning, so for us hobbyists like me this a lot of money to spend for an upgrade to get better autofocus and maybe some improved video features.
With this new cameras it's all about the in the field experience. The "old" R5 files are totally fine and sometimes even better, but this camera allows us more of an edge when shooting action in particular and there's no more of these annoying image wobbles and not much overheating and a much better remote connection for instance. So for someone like me that's a huge upgrade, but one that not necessarily shows in the actual images
Hi Chaps. Great show I really look forward to. I have been playing with the eyeball tracking and trying to work out whether it is helpful and in which situation. Have you found it helpful choosing a subject? What is your own experience?
Hi Glenn & Jan, great you got together talking and using the R5ii. As for me I would like a full frame camera, but with 30 megapixels. I don’t really need large files that the R5 and R5ii create. Canon seems to drag their butt in putting out a 30 megapixel camera other than the original R first mirrorless camera. Would the R6 Mark ii fill my needs for wildlife at 24 megapixels ? I currently use the Canon 90D & the Sigma 150-600 C combo and would like to move up too a full frame camera with the proper lens. Love watching your video’s as I do learn to better myself. I’m a senior and my budget is limited, just can’t wait for Canon too come out with a 30mp camera, and I’m not interested in the R7 at all. Wishing you both well and seeing more video’s Brian
I notice a little more noise in dark, low-light areas with the R5 II than the R5. I've read that the mechanical shutter produces less noise than the electronic shutter. I might switch to that next time out to compare the results.
@32:25 Glen ! Couldn't agree more ! I hated that my R5 didn't have an option for sound in ES mode ! Granted, I run my R7's on the quietest setting, and that's fine. But zero sound was a fail.
I shoot a lot of pics from a boat and it does offer some unique opportunities. I am still on the fence about upgrading my R5's... I think I will wait until batteries are readily available and they have had the 1st firmware update under their belt to clean up the minor bugs. Now that DXO is upgraded to manage the files do you think the high ISO images are better ?
A little bit better, but dxo also cannot add missing detail. High iso and being forced to underexpose or with very dark birds will remain a challenge, but it’s not something you’d necessarily do a lot
Great review. Pretty much in sync with my own experience. The R5m2 is a better option for birds in action. I think that pure raw does a pretty good job at cleaning High ISO images. Topaz AI is still not accepting r5m2 images so not sure how it will peform. I pre-ordered 4 additional battery with the grip with my R5m2 and Camera Canada delivered them without any delay. Too bad you live so far from BC Jan as I would lend two of the extra batteries without hesitation! Looking forward to seeing more of your extraordinary captures!
Once again an excellent video and some fantastic photography. Thank you! I've been shooting with my R5 M2 since release day and I agree with what you have to say. Not at your level, but I have put quite a few thousand pictures through the camera. The lowlight performance has given me the most worry and I was anxiously waiting for DxO Pure Raw. I wish you could have tested out Pure Raw before releasing this, but it only came out a few days ago. I was using Adobe Enhance and Topaz (by converting to DNG) on some images but in my opinion DxO is doing a superior job. Also, I use Capture One instead of Lightroom but was using it before Capture One came out with support and then continued using Enhance and Topaz until the DxO release. IMHO, the color from Adobe looks good, but without Enhance high ISO files have significantly more noise than from Capture One. I believe when the R5 came out it took a while for Adobe to optimize the processing and I suspect this will improve for the R5 II as well. I'm also hoping that some of the annoying limitations for the R5 II will be addressed with a firmware update. Fingers crossed! Finally, I had my 3rd battery appear yesterday, I hope you already got yours or will soon. Looking forward to your opinions on Pure Raw vs the competition for the R5 II files and a fresh comparison with files from the R5 after noise reduction.
Yes Pure Raw seem to be better at removing the noise for sure, but there’s still not that much more detail in the problem areas. I’ll make a video about it soon
@@jan_wegener That's great. I've also been shooting Electronic First Curtain and uncompressed Raw at high ISOs when I don't need high frame rate (I set up a separate C setting for this). It seems a little better to me. I would definitely be very interested in your take on this!
Hi Jan and Glenn, thanks for another great video. I have downloaded your files and passed them through DXO Pure Raw. I'm not impressed with the ISO 12800 quality: as you mentioned, there is a lack of detail / microconstrasts / plasticky look in the cleaned pictures. Will you ever use ISO 12800 with the R5 Mark II, or limit it to 6400 and compensate with a lower (and dangerous!) shutter speed?
Great video, Jan and Glenn. Is there a noticeable difference with the 14-bit RAWs using electronic shutter on the R5 MKII vs the 12-bit ES RAWs on the original R5?
A Canon rep told me the delay with the new batteries is caused by having to sea freight them as airlines only allow a single battery with each camera and no battery only shipments. Ideally if they could have shipped them before the cameras would have fixed this but perhaps that wasn't possible?
Hi. I plan to upgrade my EOS R6 to an EOS R5 II. I Also have an EOS R5 that I plan to keep. I have downloaded your example files and imported them into LRC. I specially was interested in the file JCW_20240825_6377.CR3 with ISO 12.800 to see what it would look like after using Topaz Photo AI, but also the Denoice AI function in LRC. My impression was that the Denoice AI function in LRC did a better job on this one than the Topaz. I saw that the original file had a lot of noice, specially in the black part of the bird where I also detected a lot of squares when zooming to 200%. I still want to go for the R5 II which seems to be so much better. Greetings from Norway
As of now, the new DXO RAW converter is better than Adobe Camera RAW on many of the shots I've taken. The R5M2 files are noisier than I was expecting in some scenarios. Above ISO 4000-5000 isn't that usable most of the time for me, especially when cropping very much at all. I wonder if Canon is trying to get people to subscribe to their NR service this way. I'm having the same issue losing eye focus on certain birds. Canon will have to correct this. I know there's already a firmware upgrade coming but I don't know what it's supposed to fix yet. I try to do a lot of BIF shots and it's a big step up from my R7 for that. I don't seem to see much rolling shutter. I use super fast cards and haven't hit the end of the buffer yet, I agree you have to be very careful not to take too many shots. Nice video.
Thanks for detailed honest review. I've been waiting to upgrade from my 7d Mk II (birds) and 6D Mk II (landscape). I was hoping the R5 Mk II would be an all around replacement for both bird and landscape photography. I haven't seen any reviews on image quality for landscape photography yet. Did you guys do any testing for landscape photography and if so what were your findings. Thanks.
For landscapes the original R5 would be a good choice as well. At low iso and with EFCS both camera will do well And are a huge step up from your current gear
What did you think of the IQ at high ISO. Duade seemed to be quite disappointed with this. He compared the dynamic range of the R5.1 to the R5.2 and found the R5.2 had gone backwards in performance in this aspect.
It’s good but not as good as the original R5 when using the ES. This mainly shows when you underexpose and use very high iso. In flat clean light with even dynamic range it’s fine
Great video, thanks Jan & Glen. I do a fair bit of near water/in water photography (not underwater!) and often struggle keeping the AF on the birds/insects eye when there are water splashes that distracts the focusing. Can the r5ii be set to stick to a specific eye without jumping off when there are water splashes? Cheers, George.
@@jan_wegener Thank you. The quick change in scene composition is quite a challenge so I will have to keep adjusting the settings until I find the sweet spot. Cheers and thanks for your informative videos, George.
How come you guys got multiple R5 IIs and Camera Canada still hasn't delivered mine on order since July, Waiting patiently Another thing I noticed with my R5 when photograghing leopards in South Africa is that if the leapard has his eyes closed the autofocus system doesn't know what to do with many different reactions Good show -- Thanks
Nice video and tons of info! 👌👍 Jan, you are mentioning both Topaz and Adobe's own noise reduction but not DXO Pureraw. Are you (still?) having issues with DXO? I do! I use my Canon EOS R5 MARK II, and there are still problems when imported to Camera Raw. Jan, DK
Great as usual and good to see you guys together. I noticed you are both mostly using the RF 600mm and I am assuming your discussion on low light performance is mainly based on this lens combination. I would be interested to know how you rate the low light performance using the 100-500mm with the R5-2. I have had nothing but cloudy weather since I got my R5-2 and with the 100-500mm i find the noise pretty high, could well be user error but would love to get your take on this from your experience. cheers.
We used it a fair bit with the 100-500, too. Glenn;'s 600 is the EF version II. Low light with ISO above 6400 and strong dynamic range challenges is not the R5 II's main strength when it comes to IQ, the AF is very good in this situation, but it's harder to lift the shadows
Good question. I'm in the same situation. Is there a summary of changes for the guide? A list of changes made from the time it was published a couple of weeks ago?
Thanks for the delightful video. Does anyone know why the only way to use the Intra-frame Compression Method is with XF-AVC S YCC422 10bit recording format? Otherwise one is forced to Long GOP, or RAW. This is not a setting / feature / card limitation.
Yes, that is very annoying, I have the same issue. And it's not even very well explained in the menu. If you select HEVC first you don't even know intra is there
If you want to try some fantastic boat stuff, the Chobe River in Botswana/Namibia is amazing. Pangolin Photo has gimbal mounts on the boats for each person but had better luck handheld. You and Glenn definitely have to go to Africa and the Chobe.
Hi Jan and Glen, do you think there is a chance with 30 FPS that 2 or more frames will be identical so could be stack in PS thus decreasing noise in high ISO shots?
Why does R5 have this overheating conversation attached to it. Do other equivalent brands have the same overheating issues? What about Sony, Nikon, Olympus ? Do they have same issues as Canon has been trying to address on R5 ?
Some do some don't as much. The main reason is that Canon announced the original R5 as an 8k filming "monster" and then it could hardly do it without going up in flame, so people are quite aware of it. But even in normal circumstance, the original R5 tended to overheat somewhat quickly in certain situations
I upgraded to the R5ii from a RP so my batteries dont swap, I have been waiting for my spares to come (To NZ) orderd at the same time at the body, but it looks like they wont come in before I travel, without a backup seems I am going to have to buy some of the old r5 ones, just because its the only option. Better to have something no longer relevant than run out I guess.
@@jan_wegener Interesting point. I travel with a power bank (And spares of a lot of things). If it can be boosted off that, its an idea. But since I mostly shoot at night, and am always on the move, it could be awkward.
Wonderful episode guys. So much to comment on but I'll keep it to a couple thoughts. I bought your set up guide and I've been using your ProSets for a while and they work well with this camera. DXO Pure Raw 4 just added support for the Mark II and is an integral part of my workflow. I'll be interested to here your thoughts because I think I'm seeing a bit more sharpening at default settings and it's not darkening my images as much as previous versions. I've set my H shooting speed to 15fps and programmed my DOF button to trigger H+ at 30fps, that way I'm not firing off a million shots when it's not necessary. It's a bit of a reach to hold 3 buttons at the same time but I'm getting better at it each time The Mark II is a terrific upgrade for us bird photographers and as always you guys help me get the most out of the camera system. Cheers
@@jan_wegener yes it does. So it’s like a speed boost button. If you watch the screen you’ll see H then push DOF and H+ appears until you let off. It was Ron @ Whistling Wings that showed this tip.
Cheers!
ha! That's great!
Very clever, as it makes her less likely to critique your new gear :). Seriously, though, my wife and I just went on a long birding trip to celebrate our 40th anniversary, a relationship sustained in large part by our shared interest in birding and bird photography. Thanks for sharing an uplifting story..
@@wellingtoncrescent2480 we just celebrated our 42. Cheers!
My god i can’t believe my eyes ! Two superstars in the same room together! Best day ever ! 🎉
Glad you enjoyed it 😀
DXO just added the r5 mkii and results are great.
You're not only two most amazing photographers and masters of your cameras, you're just as awesome show masters!!!!!! Great show in every way.
@@heidiwegener7614 100%
R5II is outstanding for bird photography. Period.
Always a good day when you upload! The nuthatch was truly a worthy shot to get featured, I personally know the photographer and he's a great guy!
Wow some really cool birds! You guys are truly blessed.
So good to see you both together and taking some great photos. Thanks for putting together such a great show.
Our pleasure!
43 minutes that I have been waiting for 💪🏻
Great to see u both together. 🙏🏻
Hope you enjoyed it!
Just finished and yes I absolutely did 🙏🏻 Amazing captures from your trip. What do you think about the pre burst. Are there any problems with the focus in this mode like it’s to slow or something and you get images that are not sharp ?
@@foreverphoto_jr It's good, but it doesn't seem to excel at birds taking off
@@jan_wegener ok thanks for the information, hopefully it’s just an firmware update to make it work better.
A great summation of the new R5 Mk 2. Can't believe how much ground you covered while creating this video. Very well done.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Finally, you guys together ! Ready to see all those pictures from that trip .❤
Did you hear how many they took????😅
Just a few more (50k 😂) to sort through
Hi Jan just wanted to jump on and say I bought your Masterclasses and I absolutely LOVE them. I have really only just started but I have learnt some really valuable editing tips already so I am one very happy customer.
Wonderful!
Great show having you photographing together. Those little finches are just so adorable. Thank you for the tips, as always.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Upgraded to R5ii and yes it’s hyperactive!
Trying your settings..thank you!
Nice to see you guys together, well done.
That what l love about this camera is l set it to 5 fps then set up a boost button so if bird takes flight the boost button can be pressed going to H+ which l set at 20fps so l don’t end up with hundreds of the same photo.
Fantastic video guys. You made me feel like I was visiting the NT all over again! It was a pleasure to meet you both at Fogg Dam too! Great work! 😎
Thanks for sharing! certainly an interesting camera
With respect to Glenn's comment about not knowing if you'd upgrade to the mark 2 if you shoot mostly macro at 31:43. The mark 2 supports flash while focus bracketing with user selectable timing between shots. For many macro photographers, this is an important feature.
ah, good point!
Hi Jan and Glenn,
Thank you for this great Video! 👍
I got my R5 Mark II on August 22, 2024 and I am very satisfied.
R5 Mark II + RF 600mm f/4.0 L IS USM + RF Extender 1.4x
Wild boars in front of a bush and the R5 Mark II's autofocus had no problems.
Greetings from Germany
Uwe
I have R5 and R5Ii. Great cameras.
Great and informative as always. Even though I'm not a Canon shooter, the techniques to taking good images are fairly universal. Really enjoy the field stories and experiences!
Great to hear :)
been missing you guys !
great you had an adventure together !
thanks for sharing 🙏
Our pleasure!
Something I find funny: when the R5 was released, everyone would only talk about how "bad" it was. Now it is revered. "They made it too good; it can't be topped. Yes the R52 has better autofocus, but the mark 1 has better dynamic range." 😂
We didn't realise how good it was I think :D
Great video guys, thanks for the files. Manual focus on video is useful sometimes, especially for those tricky small birds in amongst branches, the peak focus helps a lot too
Great to see you together! Received my R5 mk ii yesterday (upgraded from the R5) and used your setup guide today. So far, so good. Thanks for the excellent help and a wonderful episode today.
Great to hear!
Yes, 5D to R5 is a monumental jump up
Such a nice tour of northern AU birds!
I don't regret switching from the R5 1 for a second. Precapture has allowed me to take bird photos that I have never taken before.
Thanks for sharing
Fantastic episode, guys. I thoroughly enjoy the way you bounce off each other with the Mickie taking. It's very similar to myself and two bird traveling mates as we are constantly winding each other up!! Keep up the good work it's definitely making me save harder for the R5ii!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Not interested in the R5 II, but I always watch your vids for the interesting birds, the back story of your shots, and the perspectives on editing. Thanks.
That shot of Jan at the hot tub is epic. 😂
You can keep both eyes open while looking the viewfinder. Like looking through a scope.
I think you both work well together presenting. Thanks for the tips and suggestions.

Adorable presentation!
I changed my Canon EOS R and RP and R7 to my Canon EOS R6 MII and R5 MII and i am so soooo happy!!! This was the right way!!!
Great show , loved the countryside ..what a trip you guys had ! Boy you two have come along way from the early days when Jan would ride Glen about his fanny pack !
I won't be doing extreme shooting like this, so I'll stick to my R5. Thank for the great observations.
Jan, I just recently read a great write up on Canon Europe explaining the different stabilizer modes and mode 3 may have solved your issue? Here’s an excerpt
Mode 3 is especially useful for sports photography where you are likely to be moving between subjects quickly. In IS Mode 1 this can create a bump or jump within the viewfinder as the IS races to keep up with the lens movements. Instead, by not activating until the shutter button is fully pressed, it saves the system trying to compensate for random, rapid lens motion and compensates only at the point you are taking an image.
It may help, but it’s actually really hard to handhold long lenses with TCs and the IS not stabilising.
Always a trade off
Great to see you two both in the same room!
The prograde ones I use wake up fast unless there’s a lot of images on them
Epic trip. Love the video.
Great video, thanks for sharing. I’m in love with it. Now I gotta go back and cull through my 10,000 images I took yesterday.
Haha! Enjoy
Yes I did that too!
IME, the "non availability" of the LPE6P batteries is a non issue. I got them from Walmart (yuck) of all places.
Wonderful video. Just a word to help I have the fan grip and wow what a game changer no issues at all in the heat at 100 plus degrees.
Thanks for sharing!
Excellent thanks for taking the time and effort
Our pleasure!
I’d really like to see a comparison between the R6mkII and the R5mkII - same subjects photographed with both cameras.
Upgrade from a 5dMii, oh the auto focus. Great to have so much additional speed. a 12 year leap
Hi Jan and Glenn!
Thank you for this interesting and informative video. Sounds that the new Canon is a step in the right direction for wildlife shooters. Thank you Jan also for his fantastic new Lightroom Masterclass. Best wishes Roland
Glad you liked the video and classes 😀
Yes, I am going the my menu way, too
Thanks for a fun video. I watched another video featuring a professional photographer using the R5II at the Olympics. He said that he shot about 10,000 images each day for two weeks. He better be a good culler.
Yes, I have been doing something similar for over two months now :D
It’s a difficult trade off for birds atm. MP vs dynamic range
Crater lakes cottages
Sincere thanks Jan. . 😊
In my experience, using the new version of DxO PureRAW 4.4 works much better than Adobe Enhance to get details in the blacks with high ISO images.
That's great and was my expectation as well! This was filmed just before it came out
I am thinking of taking a trip up to the FNQ and Darwin for some of the birds you have photographed in this show.
Did yours actually shut down without the grip?
@@jan_wegener It did. I'm not making a huge deal out of it. But it's truth, and I think that we can help each other by sharing truth instead of emotional responses.
@@RBusinessSchoolinteresting. I have not managed to get it past 5 bars, but I am sure it can still shut down
@@jan_wegener There are three different spots in your video that look like you had the grip on your camera.
Yes, it’s probably freezes once per day
Really awesome video, thank you. Two questions if you don’t mind, the first is will you be updating the set up guide as you discover more? Second question where did Glenn get his lens hood?
If there's any meaningful changes we will make and update.
@@jan_wegener Understand. Thanks! What you describe is what I call "keeper ratio", those worth of saving or publishing.
Hi Chaps. Great show I really look forward to. I have been playing with the eyeball tracking and trying to work out whether it is helpful and in which situation. Have you found it helpful choosing a subject? What is your own experience?
I used it more at the beginning, but it tends to be a bit unreliable. It should be good with a group of birds
Excellent video again. ❤ I bought your paper instructions when it first came out, so after your excursions are you going to update the instructions?
If there's anything significant we will send it out for sure
Wishing you both well and seeing more video’s
Brian
I notice a little more noise in dark, low-light areas with the R5 II than the R5. I've read that the mechanical shutter produces less noise than the electronic shutter. I might switch to that next time out to compare the results.
Yes EFCS, too but I find it annoying to use.
@32:25 Glen ! Couldn't agree more ! I hated that my R5 didn't have an option for sound in ES mode ! Granted, I run my R7's on the quietest setting, and that's fine. But zero sound was a fail.
Can I have a moment of silence please 😂
@@jan_wegener 😄 lol
Thanks!
Thank you!
I would gladly take those 😄
Great Vid
Ironically it seems like at very high iso the R5 does a bit better
A Canon rep told me the delay with the new batteries is caused by having to sea freight them as airlines only allow a single battery with each camera and no battery only shipments. Ideally if they could have shipped them before the cameras would have fixed this but perhaps that wasn't possible?
Interesting, although whatever it is, it’s not good enough atm
Nice video.
Thanks for sharing! :)
At low iso and with EFCS both camera will do well
And are a huge step up from your current gear
@@jan_wegener Thx. I guess I need to get on the waiting list.
I don't think so
@@jan_wegener Thank you.
I got mine in Australia, Glenn just got the one
Nice video and tons of info! 👌👍
Jan, you are mentioning both Topaz and Adobe's own noise reduction but not DXO Pureraw. Are you (still?) having issues with DXO? I do! I use my Canon EOS R5 MARK II, and there are still problems when imported to Camera Raw.
Jan, DK
No I love dxo and will use it, but it wasn’t available when we filmed
@@jan_wegener cheers. Heading to Scarborough, Ontario, Canada next week to catch the Raptors. Will see how it goes.
I have the setup guide as of two weeks ago. Will you update the guide with your latest discoveries?
should be all in there. The video was filmed a little while ago
If you select HEVC first you don't even know intra is there
It seems like the R5ii is an R5 with better sports and action af. Is that worth the $1800-$2000 more?
Depends what you do
If you want to try some fantastic boat stuff, the Chobe River in Botswana/Namibia is amazing.
I doubt it
Why does R5 have this overheating conversation attached to it.
Might be better to get a usb-c battery pack than the old batteries
It's a bit of a reach to hold 3 buttons at the same time but I'm getting better at it each time
The Mark II is a terrific upgrade for us bird photographers and as always you guys help me get the most out of the camera system.
Cheers
What did you select in the menu for the button to shoot at H+ when being held down?
@@jan_wegener I chose‘Switch ES cont. shooting modes’ then in Detail set I chose H+. I may have gotten this tip from ‘Wild Alaska’ channel
@@dav14pawestand the. It goes to H+ while holding down and back when letting go?
@@jan_wegener yes it does. So it’s like a speed boost button. If you watch the screen you’ll see H then push DOF and H+ appears until you let off. It was Ron @ Whistling Wings that showed this tip.
@@dav14pawestok, thanks for sharing
