- Lance and I travelled to Sanya, China, to go to the FINA Gala, where I won Male Diver of the Year! It took us ages to get there, but we got to try some interesting food when we were there!

Heyy Tom. Congrats on the award, you deserve it after all the hard work you put in. I just wanted to say that obviously I have known about you for a while, but recently I discovered your youtube channel and was immediately hooked. I was ill the other day so probably spent around 12 hours binge watching your videos and speeches again and again. These videos make me so happy, and most importantly have helped me to realise that I can make a difference in the world if I try. I am totally obsessed with you and Lance- you guys are so cute and funny. You are also extremely inspirational as recently I have felt less motivated to make changes in the world- but now I have found the confidence and passion again to know that even at a young age I can chance society and discrimination- even if that is changing one mind at a time. So thank you so much- sending to and Lance so much love and support. Keep doing the amazing work you are doing. xxx
Just to let you know that during the ceremony, when you were talking about "my husband Lance", the Chinese Interpreter simply ignore that sentence and give some random translation which was completely unacceptable.
News outlets simply put “family” on their reports.
Oh and the live interpreter simply skipped it.

@@itsquix1111 It's the older generation who's like that, right? I had a few friends from China who were openly gay at college but I think it was only because they were international students. They could be part of the lgbt community without fearing their parents, that's my guess.
Thierry Ko yeah. It’s mostly the older generation, but also most people who still live/ or grew up in mainland China. Because you’re not exposed to western culture in china, so any idea of being LGBT isn’t talked about or recognized as much as it is in western media. But if you grew up in a western community, like I was, you are exposed to a lot more, and it isn’t a ‘taboo’ subject like it is in China. So a lot of the older generation isn’t comfortable with it. And the younger generation growing up there too. My cousin grew up in china, while my parents went to New Zealand and raised me there, and I’ve told some of my close family in China that I was dating a girl and they just skipped around the subject. They won’t say anything really bad about it, they just tend to avoid it
