Most of my Chinese friends can't stand the place and complain that they'll never go there again. The commentator was right to point out how Southeast Asia is a more 'pleasant and affordable option.' I returned from Hainan with an ear infection from the hotel pool.

This September,2023 I drove 2700km back forth to Hainan, with two ferry trips. I cannot confirm the waste issue. No beach had piles of trash. But Chinese in general don’t pickup their,trash. Very disturbing.

While everyone else who usually wants to avoid confrontation will just quietly leave, ignore, and not saying anything and not return. Yes the price gouging in Sanya is truly horrific. I remember being quoted 10,000 kuai per night for a hotel room back in 2015 during 春节. Absolutely ridiculous and I vowed never to go there. The place has shot itself in the foot and if it is now suffering then it has learned from the maxim "payback is a 婊子"!
I recently ordered a hammock off Amazon for my business and it was a whole foot shorter than advertised in length and 8" in width. I avoid anything made in China as much as possible. Capitalism is when both sides get a fair deal, Not when one side gets scammed.

Wow this place reminds me of Las Vegas. Booked a hotel room for 400 a night. Then got a bill for 600 - they charge this mysterious “resort” fees. Forget about the added parking charges at each of the resorts. I know you have to pay extra for tourist hotspots but now they have all sorts of hidden fees. I don’t mind paying but I find it really upsetting get up charged. Unfortunately, there are so many places have adopted these hidden fees. I booked a hotel room near the fisherman’s wharf in San Francisco. The advertised rate was 139 a night. I thought that was really cheap. After checking out, I ended up paying 300.
For Hotels in the US, you've got to call the hotel and ask about local taxes (not advertised) as many cities and counties charge hefty taxes on things that the locals won't necessarily feel in their wallets (to get pissed about); hotels and alcoholic drinks usually have hefty taxes attached.
I went to a tourist spot and on the way back to the hotel, the tour guide made us all get out to a marble factory. Sure, some nice statues and stuff but how can I buy one and take it home?

i'm from Singapore. My elderly mom went to Hainan with a group tour via tour agency recently. They had a cheap promo package - just after their golden week hols. She was raving about it, and i guess compared it to a cruise ship trip - cheaper overall + good food esp seafood, and service. The circus like shows, sea park and disney like village disguised as their local minority group's village felt quite artificial to me when my mom described them/ showed me photos. I was a bit disturbed by how she described how well trained the belugas in the sea park were, in doing the show for them... I guess its ok if going there for 5 star treatment, food and ok to pay. I asked her if it was crowded and she said not really. + she described the place as clean. Maybe they took the old feedback and adjusted alrdy
