This was recorded at the amphitheater in Pompeii. The song refers to the people of Pompeii lost when Mt Vesuvius erupted with 9 feet of ash covering it. Echoes from voices lost long ago. A Pink Floyd masterpiece. Check out live version from Pulse concert. Truly amazing.
I agree, music of this stature has faded into history. All you get now is computer generated garbage with no soul. Be sure to check part 2 of this amazing music. Thanks for sharing and exposing this music to your audience.

I always felt that Pink Floyd was a genre of their own. Never saw this video with rain on the lens, though. I'm glad you were emotionally moved by the performance; It is truly mesmerizing and brilliant.

You have watched only the first half of the video. It really is a long song and some of the RUclips videos have it split in two parts. The second one is more of their playing the song and ends that great instruments in hard to describe ways ) It is a long piece at 23:33 seconds. It ends with the camera doing the reverse of how it came in to film this. No Pink Floyd has always given me a feeling of leaving the body and floating in the air, into space or with this particular song swimming in the depths of the ocean hearing whales and such singing. And I fear actually being in water but feels good when it happens to the song. Every one has their own feeling to their music.

The Pompeii Amphitheater was built by the Roman's in 70 BC and buried in ash from the great Mt Vesuvius Volcano eruption in 79 AD. Pink Floyd had to get special permission from the Italian Government for this performance. A concert played to an audience of their own technicians and sound engineers. EPIC!!

That was only part one. There's a part 2 to this as well. There is a video that plays them both together or you can just look up Echoes Pompeii Pt. 2.
BTW, that's where they are..... Pompeii, Italy. Read up on it. The whole town was taken out by a volcano eruption some 2,000 yrs ago. Pink Floyd were the first band to play that ancient coliseum since that time. They are playing to the ghosts of Pompeii.

My Parents thought the1950s Rock-n-Roll was the greatest of all time and, they may have been right.
(Especially since Rock-n-Roll essentially started in the 1950s)
However, my personal belief is that the greatest Rock-n-Roll of all time was created in the 1960s and 1970s.
I may be biased since I turned 13 in 1973 and graduated High School in 1978 but, those were most definitely
the greatest years of Rock-n-Roll of all time and, I believe many millions of true Rock-n-Roll fans out there would agree with me.
Pink Floyd IS my all time favorite band however, through the 1960s and 1970s there were many, many others as well.
    Just my 2 cents worth.
    Anyway, great reaction my Man.
    Keep up the nice work.

This was filmed the first week of October 1971 as part of a movie that Adrian Maben was filming. The Floyd usually performed live along with a cutting edge light show. Here, they were playing almost completely stripped down. Echoes Part 1opened the movie and Part 2 closed the movie Interspersed with some of their classics like Saucerful Of Secrets and Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun, they pulled some tunes from their recent album Meddle and also some footage as they worked on Dark Side Of The Moon. The eerie sound of the piano is from it being played through a Leslie speaker cabinet. There are three. They are the short brown cabinets behind Rick, Nick and David.

When, as a teenager, I saw this film, which had previously been shown in cinemas, on television for the first time instead of a pop show before the holidays, the music confused me but at the same time fascinated me, something from another planet.
I rarely experience such a “musical revelation”. I didn't realize that this was the same band I heard on the radio with the two 60's single hits Arnold Layne and See, Emily Play. Shortly afterwards, Dark Side, my first PF album, came out. Only then did I find out that Echoes is a side on the LP Meddle. You still have part 2 ahead of you in this unique, tragic Pompeii; Volcanic eruption Vesuvius ¨79 AD (last in 1944 with 26 dead and around 12,000 evacuees).

They're in an ancient Roman amphitheater in Pompeii Italy that was covered by Ash in 79 ad by an eruption from Mount Vesuvius! It was absolutely perfectly preserved by the Ash and it was only uncovered a little over a hundred years ago!! Definitely look into Pompeii Italy there are unbelievable things like mosaics on floors buildings even human forms that were covered by the Ash and archaeologists filled holes they were coming in contact with with plaster and when they took the ash away they were perfect forms of human bodies who had been covered by the ash but their body had completely dissipated and left an impression for the plaster!!

Loved the reaction…but please realize this is literally 1/2 of the song. Listen to the 2nd part, together they may be my favorite piece of music of all time.
Don’t fight it…let it take you over, it’s supposed to. And don’t apologize, just enjoy in your own way.
One slight disagreement- I can’t call this Rock and Roll, it deserves its own category.
The lyrics get lost, but go back and read them…pure poetry.
The long jam session with the intense bass line is remarkable. (my interpretation) - it’s mirroring life…multiple influences coming together (work, family, health, etc) with the periodic chaotic interruptions (Gillmore’s guitar blasts) each is different and when it’s past, we settle back into the rhythm of life.

Are we in for a ride! I saw this at a drive-in back in the 70s. Back when reading was encouraged. Folks were more advanced back then. Progress was afoot. And lookit. No need to apologize. The folks at Led Zeppelin were surely among those other giants who would go to see Pink Floyd at the London Underground, where a splendid time was guaranteed for all.

Enen though this is from the early days of Floyd, even back then they were putting on some wild live shows. There were some critics who tried to put the band down as just having to rely on their gimmicks and light shows. So they proved them wrong by doing this set in Pompei with no audience and just them playing.

Gilmore just auctioned off about 20 guitars from his personal collection and gave the money to charity. If I remember right I think he got 4.5 million for the black strat in this video. Depending on your age, country of origin, or ethnicity everyone has an image of "cool" locked in their brain. I think David Gilmore, shirt off in the Italian sun, wailing on a black strat should be the picture next to "cool" in the dictionary.

No it's not. That false narrative has been out there for a long time, but is false.
It's about time, nature, and the human condition. It reflects on the interconnectedness of humanity and the importance of empathy and understanding.
It explores the cyclical nature of life. The repeated line “And no one sings me lullabies / And no one makes me close my eyes” symbolizes the solitude and emptiness that can be felt in the face of the inevitable passage of time.
Besides, the theory of evolution is nothing but nonsense and the more w learn about DNA and microbiology, the more nonsensical it becomes. Probably the biggest lie perpetrated om mankind.

First performance in the original Roman ampitheatre in about 2,000 years....too fragile to let a few thousand spaced out drunks to dance all over it, so NO audience allowed.
Pompeii and the amphitheatre were destroyed by Mt Vesuvius 83 years BEFORE the Coliseum was built in Rome.
I'm sure you have seen Vesuvius applied to Italian food or pizza.....meaning HOT ?
A reference to the volcanic eruption that destroyed early Romes play ground city and beach resort. lol

You didn't listen to the last half. I now have a big empty hole I have to go fill.
By the way Pompeii is one of the oldest amphitheaters in the world had you heard the end you would have heard all the spirits of those buried by Vesuvius🌋 rise as they were finally appeased.
