      It is necessary to start from the beginning to understand the IMMENSE, THE COLOSSAL role of Pink Floyd in the history of music in our time. And what better way to get back to the basics, so that a young person like you can grasp the precise time when the influence of this group was felt. There is no greater testimony than the recording of the historical video of Pink Floyd in Pompeii (1 and 2) to capture its full scope. Why?... Because this is the exact moment of the changeover. Middle, of which Echoes is a part, was made at that time. But what people have to realize is that in 1971, the world is still under the yoke of the Beatles and the little melodies 'Yeah. . . Yeah. . . Yeah'... Commercial compositions, short in time, and without any pretensions. And here comes this band!. . . . . Celestial. . . Interstellar. . . A music that comes straight from the edge of the universe. Can you realize? The Beatles in 1964 and 7 years later Pink Floyd. UNBELIEVABLE!. . They literally opened the musical skies to other bands like Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Metallica etc. . . . They are the first of our time to build a bridge between the long works in musical duration ( 18, 25 min. etc. ) such as Beethoven, Mozart. A melody of Elvis, the Beatles were all very short and of a commercial nature. One last point. . . Before them the shows were minimalist. Very little sound, visual and minimal lighting support. They really revolutionized these aspects too. . . Also they are the biggest band of all time. In three, four hundred years, they will still listen to them and have the same reactions as you

    In case you guys were curious, the music you hear on this video was the *actual* music recorded during that session on film. Pink Floyd insisted that that be the case with the film director prior to agreeing to do the film. NO post-production music over-dubs. That's why you see their entire 1970's production and recording set on the ground in the video. IT'S THE REAL THING.

      @holomatrix 3 года назад +4

      @@Skraboing649 Not sure about miming, but with the scenes in the studio of David overdubbing Eclipse, (and I think also Roger on the Synthi AKS doing On The Run) it's true that they'd already finished DSOTM by that point which was in the process of final mixing, so they just basically went in the studio and played some stuff.

They were using a quadraphonic sound system and the music was swirling around the hall. Mind blowing to say the lease. Saw them twice again during the Dark Side of the Moon tour. Yeah, the one that is so perfect it could never, ever be improved. Let's take that and fucking ruin it with the world's worst CGI. Is there anybody out there who had discovered this band in the 70s without the use of drugs?really soooo cliche.i doudt those who connect always those two things could ever understand and apprecciate this music from oxford students.very smart music for such a wasted generation.literally.if you dont believe me listen to what other -ahead of their time- bands have to say about this topic,such as the who and jethro tull.its like when you send a message as an artist (baba o riley) and everyone is so trully wasted that noones gets the irony of it.you need to reach a certain age to understand irony.imagine to try it with drugs.you ll be a laughing stock for generations to come.unless they take drugs to.a perfect way to ceep a whole generation comfortably numb.

    • @Amanda-si1qz
      @Amanda-si1qz 3 года назад

      Μαρια Χουρδακη , You ask about discovering PF’s Meddle without drugs, we’ll yes I did, given I was only thirteen at the time but in reality after listening to it I was naturally as high as a kite and certainly wouldn’t have needed anything to smoke or to take anything else to achieve the overwhelming power and effect the album had on me after my initial first listen. I’m not sure if it was my age and no doubt raging hormones may have contributed also, maybe? Who knows. Neither can I say it remained that way when I grew up and left home though. During the early seventies drugs were everywhere, nothing as evil as today though except for heroin. Heroin was the worst by far but then only in one major city in our country. In small towns like mine it was never seen. Weed or dope as we referred to it back then was extremely easy to come by and more often than not homegrown, not saturated in ‘God knows what’ as I believe it is today. But at least that was relatively short lived time of smoking for me, unlike my eternal love of PF which will remain forever. So many years now have passed but they still remain number one on my desert island disc list, closely followed by Radiohead. :)

    The Pink Floyd - Live at Pompeii DVD should be part of every Floyd aficionado's collection. Not only do they do Echoes and other tunes from Meddle, but you see them actually in the studio laying down tracks for this new album they've been working on called Dark Side of the Moon, and playing around with all the new fangled electronic toys they have at their disposal to make some of the weird sounds you hear in "On The Run" and elsewhere. I think you see a little of Gilmour laying down some of the "Brain Damage" guitar parts as well. There's also a few really spaced out sounding interviews in there. Lol!

    There was 1 audience member. A kid who snuck in. They found him 45 years later and interviewed him for Gilmour's concert there. Also, worth noting a teenage Black Strat sporting a white pickguard makes its appearance. Little did it know that it would go on to have the career it had ending by being auctioned for $3.9 million just a few weeks ago. This guitar featured on Atom Heart Mother (1970), Meddle (1971), Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii (1971), Obscured by Clouds (1972), Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), David Gilmour (1978), The Wall (1979), The Final Cut (1982), About Face (1984), David Gilmour Live at Hammersmith Odeon (1984), Live 8 (2005), On an Island (2006), Remember that Night (2006/07), Live in Gdansk (2006/08), Bryan Ferry, Olympia (2010), The Orb, Metallic Spheres (2010) and Pink Floyd Endless River (2014), Rattle That Lock (2015), Live at Pompeii (2016).
    There is a part 2. Part 1 and part 2 bookmarked the the beginning and end of the Pompeii film. Part 2 is a little annoying in that the director chooses to silhouette the band during the albatross guitar section. Music's still great though.

    I always dig the amp/speaker stacks!
    This reaction is suited to your style of a straight listen. Part II will complete the trip!
    P.S. - was at that amphitheater in '95. It is the oldest surviving Roman amphitheater. Modern amphitheaters and stadiums even used the designs of the washrooms.

    I didn't know much about Floyd. Then a friend and myself went to a Midnight showing of "Pompeii", in the 70's. This was the opening song. That was the clip, that truely introduced me the the band. It has a special place in my musical heart. Thanks, ASAP Hollywood

    A great reaction guys. It's great to see Nick Mason channelling his inner Bill Ward and the harmonies between Rick Wright and Dave Gilmour are so haunting. Rick is a sad loss of a great talent. You must do part 2 in fact do the whole Pompeii performance awesome.

    Excellent reaction. Love the duality: grooving the music, grooving the visual. Most PF fans know that Echos was a glimpse into what was to become next: the premier concept recordings ever: Dark Side of the Moon. One the charts for over 700 consecutive weeks (look it up). The rest as they say...is history! Love your channel! Keep it up!

      chris b and they recorded it in pieces. If they didn’t like a take, they re-recorded the part.. they would finish a section, go listen to it and decide to continue or re-do the section. True perfectionists.

    I haven't watched it in a long time....but there is a DVD of that entire concert. They did the FULL album out there. I believe the crew had to run power cables a couple of miles out thru the jungle to reach the amphitheater.....and supposedly, a couple of backpackers stumbled across them, as they were filming this, and were allowed to just hang around & watch. How cool would THAT have been?

    Hold on guys! Pink Floyd delved into the movie industry also and this was just 1 scene from 1 of their movies. Pink Floyd Live in Pompeii is a full feature movie and you just listened to part of 1 song. I experienced the show on a full screen movie theater with surround sound at the midnight movie series that my local theater was showing. You need to watch the entire movie on the largest screen you can find. Yes there's another movie 😁 Obscured By Clouds. Have you died and gone to heaven? They have other awesome music videos and their epic production of The Wall. 🤭

    • @flubblert
      @flubblert 5 лет назад

      back in the '70s the midnight showing of Floyd at Pompeii was the only way many of their fans actually got to see them since they did no American TV and so rarely toured the states. The midnight showing of Pink Floyd ran for years in theaters all across America. This was the first music video/movie I ever bought back in 80...81? somewhere in there. (they actually did do an 'American Bandstand' back in the '60s but none of that really registered at the time with post Dark Side era Floyd fans.)

    Pink Floyd couldn't have come up with a more unique venue to play this fantastic track - the ancient arena at Pompeii, what a place to make music ! The ancient Romans would have loved it ! Excellent, pure joy. Now guys, you must see David Gilmour and friends play "Comfortably Numb" at the exact same place in 2016, it is a breathtaking rendition of one of Floyd's best tracks ever. 😘

    Alex wouldn’t look out of place if he went back in a time machine and joined the band at the venue. It’s often been said that looking at Nick Mason with all the hair and moustache etc. - now THAT’S what a proper drummer should look like! Great revue as always, and I agree, I was disappointed that we only got about half of the piece. But great live playing and nice to see early (ish) Floyd live.

    I saw this film in the late 70s and the movie splits the 2 halves of the song. If I remember correctly part 2 was the climax and ending to the film, but I could be wrong about that.
    But just imagine you're me - a 16 year old in a theater at midnight madness circa 1979 watching this movie. It was surreal.
