- Classic Game Room HD reviews RED FACTION GUERRILLA from THQ and Volition. This is the 3rd Red Faction game but is it the best? The series returns after nearly a decade and takes place decades after the first game. No longer straight forward first person shooter, this new Red Faction allows the player to run around a huge environment on Mars and destroy practically everything in sight for salvage to help them free mars from the EDF. This CGRHD review of Red Faction Guerilla (not Red Faction Gorilla or Red Faction Gurilla) has gameplay from Red Faction on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 (this is the Xbox 360 version, not PS3 version of Red Faction). It has a large storyline and many, many missions and guerilla actions to play out. Destroy things with a variety of cool weapons that can be upgraded along the way. Drive vehicles and wipe the Martian floor with EDF soldiers after smashing them with a huge sledgehammer. While CGR still prefers the original masterpiece, this new Red Faction is a lot of fun thanks to solid programming and GEO MOD 2.0. Yes, Geo Mod has stolen the show and is the engine of destructive mayhem within Red Faction Guerilla. Blast buildings, explode trucks and bring down structures with explody goodness and flying shards of metal. Red Faction delivers Geo Mod 2 and makes CGR want Geo Mod 3 soon! The 360 version has achievement points for Red Faction Guerilla and the PS3 version has Playstation trophies. Coming soon to PC, no word on the Vectrex version yet though.
I had a lot of fun playing this game! I love that you can destroy absolutely everything you see and generate some chaos everywhere! And near the end of the game, you can even get a jetpack! Awesome!
Each game in the series is drastically different from the one that preceded it, save for the geo-mod, which ties them all together nicely. It's an outstanding series.
EDF! EDF! EDF!
I always enjoy these reviews!
I dont know, but always when I watch classic game room review of the game I own, it makes me want to go play it :D
So im gonna go and play RF guerrilla now :)
This is definitely my favourite Red Faction, an open world sandbox game done right. As for the story it serves it's purpose by supporting the gameplay.
Where as the story in Red faction 1 was terrible and the gameplay was a mixed bag some parts good and some really terrible. Where as Guerrilla is a far more even and interesting game. A sequel and reboot that surpassed the original in my humble opinion.
I'm getting this on Steam tonight! Can't wait!
I was thinking how can a game 8 Years old on xbox 360 look almost better then present game like fallout 4 on xbox And both games seem to have a similar looking engine Take the movement and walking it really remind 's me of fallout 4 ..Am I the only One thinking this ??
Yeah, take a look at Shadowgrounds! That's one of the old games that nails the graphics department really well! I don't know why can't newer games be like these old games where even the shittiest PC can run such delicious graphics.
The thing that strikes me about Red Faction: Guerrila is that, well... it's GOOD. It's a genuinely good, well-made game, and one that you can tell almost as soon as looking at wasn't just pumped out to make a quick buck or two. Remains one of the most underappreciated gems of this generation if you ask me. Plus, I like how it runs in 1080p on the PS3, looks stunning.
GotY 2009 without question for me. I respect Volition because they made a game which great technology and a perfect multiplayer (in my opinion) that challenges all the clichées and conventions of normal shooters by giving us a dynamic arena.
Ohhh, so good! Oh the destruction!
A shame that I can't buy it at the moment as I'm short on cash and on a tight budget, but when I get the chance, I'll be sure to buy this!
that robot at the end looked epic!!
Hey Buddy, Great Review (As Always of course) I am Re-Watching this as well as your Review of RF1, You reminded me of RF1 here so now Im Downloading it to See how GREAT it is as you say, Can't wait to play that Game :)
I remember back when THQ was synonymous with shovelware. Now they're pretty awesome.
This game is so much fun. I spent probably about 30 hours playing it, even after the main story was over. Red Faction: Armaggedon was fun too and I enjoyed it but this one is even better.
Excellent review.
Thermobaric rockets and jet pack adds even more layers to this great and addicting game. Just don't be afraid to set it on easy - this game doesn't mess around after the first map.
I thought that, too!
Because i saw this review yesterday and now it's up again.
I love Mark and all of his reviews, but this one honestly seems more like I comparison (to the older Red Factions). I played this game all the way through and it never got old. Very entertaining and complex. I loved it, and I think it should have been reviewed in a better sense.
heh Mark is all about the Vectrex now. That's awesome! I was wondering what he thought of this game because he really enjoyed the original Red Faction. One of his funniest reviews ever.
man i love your reviews, you don't need to give games a score, you just say what it is and what it offers, all i need to decide if i want it or not.
waiting for next review xd
@TwoFriends878 geo mod is the name of the physics engine that allows full destruction in the game.
it's a huge sandbox game, so yeah, you can go whereevr you want and do whatever you want
This is one of the best games I have played in a while! The Campaign is brilliant and the multiplayer is to die for...
Love the recall reference ;)
I was amazed when playing the ps3 demo. blowing up a buildings foundation and the see it slowly crumble in the dust was epic.
i'm just gonna go pre-order it for my computer (getting the first 2 games with it :)
I just finished this game last night and it's awesome. The battles at the end of each chapter are epic LOL. Good review as well.
See, people who don't see the true heart of gold that lies at the core of this game, which is the ability to destroy each and every object in the game. People take for granted what is lying right before their eyes.
Red Faction kicks ass. No other way to put it.
Not so much in CoD 4, you are able to shoot through specific objects.
Destructible environments always brighten up a game to me.
This brings back good memories when I was a kid🥲
Great game with great destruction. The worst part however, is that the buildings dont come back after getting destroyed. They need the reconstructer from multiplayer in single player.
@surrealgeorge ok so Volition is the developer of both, but the engine is different.
Saints wor used havok physics engine, red faction guerilla uses volitions own geo mod 2.0 physics engine, which allows full destruction of nearly everything.
I had fun with this. Best destructible environments ever featured in a videogame. My only gripe is the low ammo limit, the constantly respawning anemies and the last few missions which are INSANELY hard and will make you pull your hair out.
Other than that, fun game.
very few games use real time physics and this game nails it perfect and has enough action packed into it to make up for it's faults case closed.
Oh man! Red Faction 2 was so damn awesome!
I love how he says "lets take a vacation!"
um nordic games bought the series and will probably be continuing it as well *hopefully*
I rented this game a few days ago and im having alot of fun. The breaking things never gets old. I wish they had a free mode online though.
@MrSomeGamerdude I watched the review for Armagedon after this one but cheers for your help
this game is so AMAZING normally hit and run games are boring but red faction gurrilla is a whole new look to hit and run games........................ they also say direct attacks are suicide but i go in for direct attacks and own them all
this game definitely has the best mechanics for any game i ve played
I agree. I didn't really mind the 3rd person, though. I thought it worked well. But I would have liked the option of going to FPS, kind of like how Fallout does it, I'd like to be able to switch.
That being said, I freaking love the sledgehammer :D The first Red Faction and Guerrilla are my 2 favorites in the series.
@GAVIGANman not really, there are some references to the first game but the main story pretty much stands on its own, what there is of it (Not much).
I wished BF1 have this level of destructibility...
They try lol.
I really really hope that every sandbox games adopt this kinda engine, imagine how GTA and saints row can blow up buildings, damn that's legit !
Of course the setting and feel is different. The world has changed. No longer do you fight against Ultor, you fight against the EDF who were once good but now are corrupt. A terraformer has been set up and now you can walk around without an envirosuit and no longer stuck in mines are caverns and stuff. You are a rebel fighting in an open all out war against the EDF to beat them and their rule. The game is perfect, it would have been stupid to have the same setup as the first did.
@THEBIGGESTSKI11ETFAN Oh it was a console that was released in 1982. It was a comercial failure, but it was a kickass system. It used vector based graphics which I can't really explain but they were really nice for 1982! :)
It's like GTA with destructible buildings that are spread far apart, so up to you man.
This dude never care about graphics nor frame rate issue, original gamer!
@MrTURBOJOHN Yes, available on Steam. I had found it for $5 on a sale and it is so worth it.
Game of the generation! This game is WAY TOO MUCH FUN (at least on the PC) :P
Time Splitters 4: The Red Faction on Vectrex would be the best game ever!
I love how you refer to Red Faction 1 as like the ultimate game :D
Mark has a serious hard-on for the Vectrex. It seems that system is mentioned in every other vid lol
Nice Review.... this game looks awesome.
same i love that u can blow up a wall were the target is in and just destroy the whole building
Mark you make my day
I have gotten over 500 kills with my sledgehammer. It is by far the most addicting weapon
@MasterPhilbo yeap. and theres a demo out for it. for you can try out. in the new red faction game. it has to do with underground than above. and that theres new enamys.
i love red faction on the ps1. i cant wait to play its later games. idc if they suck
You know that cutscene that's at 1:15? You can hear the Wilhelm scream in it.
I really liked this game, as well as the one after it!
To me this is the best game I`ve ever played!?! Got to love geo-mod!?!
here is the thing i am worried about once you destroy everything will it just be empty or does the buildings respawn to be destroyed again?
Just can't bring myself to fight against EDF. EDF!
Did it not get HD the first time or something so it had to be re-uploaded?
good review glad you reviewed it
@Mikemc No, I'm not. From what I've seen, they tried to make RF:A in a similar environment to the original RF but still use the new 3rd person idea then add monsters.
Red Faction Armageddon will be the game that kills the series, it looks god awful, they took away the over-the-top action, took away the massive fun building destructions, took away all of the fun free roaming, took away any kind of interesting story and didn't bother to add anything new.
This is a sad day.
@mushfarm it's blazing bullet that goes through wall and human DNA shows that it's really useful but i think they are kinda wrong but you never know right so it's weird but it's not hard to find i hope this helped you
This game is just explosive and fun the entire time, but you didn't mention the one flaw that I found most annoying while playing. It is a huge open world, but it is always so empty. You can find these huge, complex, awesome looking structures but they only show up every once in a while and the rest is gas stations and empty houses.
Bought it yesterday for $5, i am happy.
The ability to switch would be awesome, and to be fair I haven't even played this one yet c:
I love this game so much.
@koolaid5684 It doesn't change them. It just gets them out of the way for later.
10 years already
I loved this game for one reason, i could just always go back and have a hell of a time destroying mindless shit :D
i played the second game first and loved that game i played the first one second and then grew on that and this game looks amazing im gna borrow it off my friend soon i hope
This game is practically Saints Row 2 re-textured and a few extra mechanics. Don't get me wrong I enjoy it, the building destruction physics are awesome but the longetivity sucks due to unimaginative missions and story. I wish they could have incorporated the free roam design, building destruction mechanics with Red Faction 1's environment destruction all wrapped up in the furious FPS combat of Red Faction 2.
I can but dream
@Mikemc im sorry, underground in the mines fighting aliens (or possibly mutants from the second game (possible plot twist)) doesn't appeal to me.
cool review, and wow game looks awesome!
i heard somewhere that you can rebuild stuff on the newer red faction games? is that true?
Damn I didn't even know Mark reviewed Red Faction Guerrilla. Know I'm more convinced to get it for my PC in September and yeah won't care much for the plot just want to destroy in different ways the buildings. It's kind of disappointing the fact that the first Red Faction had terrain destruction which this game doesn't. Maybe they knew what they were doing but it would of been cool to dig under a building and destroy it from underground. Oh and Mark should really review Saints Row 2.
I have this game and its just funny playing it on multiplayer.
wait wtf? This was Up already last night, how come he deleted it and re-uploaded it? is it a different version or something?
Nice Total Recall reference
HD worked fine with the original video. I don't know why it was re-uploaded.
I just love your reivew even if I have got the game! :D Also while playing it today I blew up a large tower and obviously it collapsed but it collapsed towards me so i ran under a little awing type thing thining " I will be safe here" -__- I died laughing! :D
@TIMEBENNER yes it is.
Why do only the CGR videos not load very fast for me?
What I really wanted to do most is running around with a freaking Heavy walker and going trough building, also sticking bombs and swinging sledge hammer also before swinging just yell: "STOP HAMMAH TIEM!1!!"
Free on xbox 360 in november for gold members yaaay :D
One reason I enjoy this game (well, the demo, anyway... I don't have the full game yet) is because it is NOT for wusses. Sure, you can blow everything up, slam people with sledgehammers, and drive large trucks through buildings, but it's NOT an easy game. I died more times than I care to admit before FINALLY getting to the walker... then it was a cakewalk!
Just bought today off PSN and it's owesome
7:55 its just funny watching that guy run about with a charge on his face
For the memories of a lifetime...rekall...rekall......reeekkkaaallll...😅
@TIMEBENNER no problem
But when i said "So sad the series died" i didn't mean that they killed the franchise by adding more of a open world feeling, i meant that it really died. They announced that they weren't going to make any more Red Faction games after they made Armaggedon D:
7:57 Now that's what I call a sticky situation.
Now I gotta ask, can you do bots in multiplayer like Red Faction 2? That was half the fun making idiot bots while fighting friends.
i love the first red faction when you are parker it was my one of the funnest games i play
Really great game.
8:33 why use the door when you can smash the wall in with a giant robot?
they fired the main writer who was responsible for Red Faction 1. I think his name was Mike Breualt or something like that
