Hearing the haunting soundtrack of ODST and just mindlessly wandering the empty, ruined streets of New Mombassa gives me a series of emotions I can't possibly hope to describe
ODST is the Halo that stands the test of time. It has all the best aspects of CE, 2, 3 and Reach. The music; the art style; the game-play; the difficulty; the multiplayer; the co-op; the characters; the story. They cut the fat and kept what matters most. It is a perfect Halo game.
ODST & Reach are my favourite Halo games (closely followed by #1). I much prefer to hear the stories of other characters in the Halo universe, not just the story of Master Chief. Both of these games also have their own individual charm rather than simply being the next in the series, a series which i love nevertheless :) A lot of people seem to dislike ODST & Reach, not that it affects my opinion of either (and certainly not the reason i prefer them), but could someone enlighten me as to why?
Just discovered this guy and i instantly subscribed. His dry humor when he reviews is hilarious, those sections where he says nothing to force that awkward silence is funny too.
this is my favorite Halo game yet, it is so well put together. It may not be that original or ground breaking compared to other Halo games but the way it was put together was much better than previous Halos.
I must praise you here mark. this is the most well informed and honest review ever. you havent showered the game with praise. thank you for being human!
I have yet to play any of the Halo games in the series. But if the games are similar to the one featured in this video I can see why the game is so popular. I like how you showed the different style of gameplay in the video. Time to check out part deux!
It's only 4 hours if you speed through it as fast as you can, paying no attention to anything. It's 6 hours if you pay a little attention, and it's 8-10 hours if you enjoy Halo games. Plus, you can replay it at least 3 times if you like Halo games cause of all the audiologs and all the little references to things in the Halo lore. Plus, Firefight can last forever and it is so much fun. Put the IWHBYD and Grunt Birthday Party skulls on and then play firefight, trust me, it's awesome.
I'm not really a big fan of Halo but my friend bought this game and it is pretty fun. The most fun part was just killing each other during the missions.
@orkkilla there are Bo elites because the elites left the covenant at the end of halo 2. Its kind of a main part of the story. I dunno how you missed it.
@doodv49 agreed. this campain's story was much more engaging and cooler than Halo 3's campaign. this actually showed the effects of the covenant invasion of earth.
Great starter game for people first buying their 360. ODST holds incredible value for those first timers, considering in how It has a terrific campaign, and the whole multiplayer along with all the DLC maps. Its value, however is overlooked by people who ALREADY purchased the DLC. The only thing I got from this package, was recon, three new maps, and an awesome sweet but short campaign. Thats it. Not really worth the price tag if you're in the same situation as me.
I think ODST is quite a good game. Most of all because it IS different. It has a different style, different storytelling and not to forget... different main characters ^^ THATS what's making it good. And I really like the way of the storytelling. Flashbacks, different views and bringing it all together at the end. Not to forget the additional story you can find inside the game by collecting the audio-fragments. It just is far to short :) pardon bad englisch, greetings from germany
i love the whole trilogy equally. i like odst and wars too. but the main trilogy is my favorite game of all time though i do seem to have a soft spot in my heart for halo 2 but again, i like them all equally.
this is my favorite of the Halo series, nice atmosphere (when doing the city exploration bits as Rookie), fitting soundtrack, pretty good shading, playing as a normal human...so what if i like this game? it's my opinion, the only way an opinion can be wrong is if someone genuinely enjoyed an entire playthrough of Sonic 06...unless they've never played a game before and did not play any afterwards..or something
It was an enjoyable game, indeed. I look at it in the same fashion as I look at Devil May Cry 2. It's not a game that tries to be better than its predecessor, it just tries to deliver a different experience. And it succeeds at that.
I really like the way you review, as I'm a reviewer myself. Its great how you add lots of humour an your opinions really seem like your own , an from a gamers perspective. Its a shame you left a big brake of commentary through the first half of Part 1, I wish it had kept flowin an didn't have any brakes between 1 an 2.
@ ShakingAtTheKnees. Yes, Playing online is awesome. It seems that online multiplayer with the first Halo 3 is being phased out. There are still alot of players on there, but ODST has priority gaming over the first Halo 3 (such as weekend experience points and more game modes). I wish the Halo industry doesn't trample over their previous games again , like they did with ODST on Halo 3. I'm not going through this cheap excuse for them to make money again! Go for OSDT!
i doubt that. bungie even said that halo reach is not likely to be the last game. halo reach is a prequel to halo 1; it covers the events that happened on reach..they will prob have a halo 4 to tie up the cliffhanger at the end of halo 3.
Contrary to that remark the game's campaign is as long as Halo 3's then you get firefight along with that which is incredibly fun. Add in the multiplayer disc which includes all maps that if totalled up in MS points would be about 25-30 dollars your looking at an awesome deal. Im not disagreeing with your GOTY comment just saying it has a great value that keeps being overlooked =P
@audallas841 after u get close it says "the beacon is nearby" then you have to look around and it doesnt light up or anything u just have to w8 for it to say ""press X to inspect"
Its dumb how you can't kill the elites in this game. I'm glad they brought back the health bar from halo 1. Its like if the marine has a shield of his own, but the annoying bleeping noise bugs me when the character is low on health.
@Itachihates the brutes "Attacked" the elites at the END of halo 2. This takes place only 6 hours after the explosion in the 2ND LEVEL. The elites were still mutual with the brutes.
It looks much better with Halo 3, it actually has a degree of a stylized look, it's just a shame that it's very much borrowed from Aliens and other such things
hi mark I finally played and finished this game just minutes ago because I watched this review years upon years ago and it finally went on sale on the steam store it was something special. I absolutely adore the music, style, and storytelling. it really was something, even though I've seen plenty other of your reviews and other games go by, this one has always stuck with me. It was definitely that special soundtrack and the way you gave it credit. I know CGR hasn't been the same for a very long time, but for whatever reason, this game and your review, stuck with me for a very, very long time and if it wasn't for you, I would have never played this special game. so, thank you.
@pkfire343 loved the campaign style... that style just isn't something i wanna see in other halos but loved it.. it was something fresh and the MP disc was cool
Old ducks sing tunes anyway this was my second favorite halo next to reach this really showed a more human side of the war where you really wanted to know more about the city the characters and the rookie the cheif is getting kind of old they really need to change it up for the next game
Yea, even though i'm a halo fan and not a COD fan. i'll agree with you. ODST was rushed. It was just gonna be a DLC but then they decided to make up there mind. Honestly it's not game of the year material.
Hearing the haunting soundtrack of ODST and just mindlessly wandering the empty, ruined streets of New Mombassa gives me a series of emotions I can't possibly hope to describe
Geoff Janes this is my favorite Halo game
This was also my favorite halo. I think its soundtrack is entirely underrated compared to how much praise the other halo games get
Bought this game based on this review, really glad I did! Best Halo campaign on the 360 by far, and Ive played them all.
ODST is the Halo that stands the test of time. It has all the best aspects of CE, 2, 3 and Reach. The music; the art style; the game-play; the difficulty; the multiplayer; the co-op; the characters; the story. They cut the fat and kept what matters most. It is a perfect Halo game.
perfect halo? halo 2 is way better
ODST & Reach are my favourite Halo games (closely followed by #1). I much prefer to hear the stories of other characters in the Halo universe, not just the story of Master Chief. Agreed, ODST is my personal fave, just wish it was longer.
Hell, ODST and Wars are my personal favorites since they did the thing that you said.
Oh ya and the music was amazing with slow smooth dark jazz emphasizing the lonliness and then old classic halo music highlighting the chaos
I wish Halo ODST was a franchise all it's own, the atmosphere & art design makes this my favorite Halo game, to this day.
I agree, the atmosphere coupled with martys music was incredible, I loved it.
I must praise you here mark. this is the most well informed and honest review ever. you havent showered the game with praise. thank you for being human!
Excellent music indeed. Adds to the atmosphere quite well, Reminds me of some of the Resident Evil "safe rooms" themes.
You know i love the film/sci-fi noir influences its a nice touch. it kind of makes me feel like the cities are future vegas.
I have yet to play any of the Halo games in the series. But if the games are similar to the one featured in this video I can see why the game is so popular. I like how you showed the different style of gameplay in the video.
Time to check out part deux!
I the love music in game when ur walking in the city all alone wondering what awaits at the next corner!!!
It's only 4 hours if you speed through it as fast as you can, paying no attention to anything. It's 6 hours if you pay a little attention, and it's 8-10 hours if you enjoy Halo games. i remember this was my first halo game and i still love it :)
the music at 2:30 reminds me of the music played in the safe rooms of older resident evil like 2... googd memories
the "line" you see around the enemy's is an option the shoktrooper has to see better in the dark, it can be turned on/off
Master chief & the arbiter aren’t overrated, they are the coolest(unlike anything from sega)these are facts.
Marine brutally splattered at 6:55
I'm not really a big fan of Halo but my friend bought this game and it is pretty fun. The most fun part was just killing each other during the missions.
That's a good point but they've also improved upon FPS's for present day like with Timesplitters.
@orkkilla there are Bo elites because the elites left the covenant at the end of halo 2. Its kind of a main part of the story. I dunno how you missed it.
halo odst and firefight is on the first halo 3 matchmaking, forge, theater, and custom games(uncluding all the maps) is on the second
I loved the atmosphere to this game & to top it off, it's some of Marty's best compositions imo.
Heres my fav halo games:1. reach 2. ODST 3. CE. BTW, this guy reviewing is the best reviewer i've ever seen..
If only all the Halo games had the feeling of ODST. Still love it!
if you look at the slip space portal on the right you'll see inaberclad. from halo 2.
i loved the music in this game.
@doodv49 agreed. this campain's story was much more engaging and cooler than Halo 3's campaign. this actually showed the effects of the covenant invasion of earth.

"Trying to kill bad guys here"
LOL xD

My all time favorite game OST, so atmospheric and moody. #2 is RE Umbrella Chronicles
I like your reference to one of my favorite directors; Akira Kurosawa.
You know, I used to hate this game, my least favorite of the halos, but now that I see your point of view on it, it's really a great game.
It's not about steam. It's just that both of those games were greatly awarded, hl2 was even rewarded as the best game ever.
It was an enjoyable game, indeed. I look at it in the same fashion as I look at Devil May Cry 2. It's not a game that tries to be better than its predecessor, it just tries to deliver a different experience. And it succeeds at that.
@citiboy150 don't forget they did include the full multiplayer experience
I really like the way you review, as I'm a reviewer myself. Its great how you add lots of humour an your opinions really seem like your own , an from a gamers perspective. Mastercheif is the man
I definitely wasn't a huge halo fan before this. I only played the first one but this one got me hooked dont the series.
that's what makes it unique.
bravo CGR loved your review
@ ShakingAtTheKnees.

Go for OSDT!
@lukemyster14 the maps are on the disc itself
i doubt that. bungie even said that halo reach is not likely to be the last game. halo reach is a prequel to halo 1; it covers the events that happened on reach..they will prob have a halo 4 to tie up the cliffhanger at the end of halo 3.
Music reminds me of a mix of old school resident evil, and the Sega CD version of echo the dolphin.
IMO the list of Halo campaigns are
1. Halo CE
2. Halo 3 ODST
3. Halo 2
4, Halo Reach
5. Halo 3
at 4:56 that song sounds a lot like welcome home by coheed and cambria
O.D.S.T-Old dogs sipping tea xD

Everyone should do that, they are some best shooters evert
this game is my second if not favourite halo game xD
Yay! you mentioned Rashomon!
ODST on the PC would be so kick ass.
@spacod4 I totally agree with you. Halo ODST had a good movie-like story, but Halo Combat Evolved is still the best.
i think out of all the halo games the best single player experience i had was from halo combat evolved
you and me would make an awesome online warthog driving team lol
@audallas841 after u get close it says "the beacon is nearby" then you have to look around and it doesnt light up or anything u just have to w8 for it to say ""press X to inspect"
this is my favorite halo game
EXCELLENT REVIEW!
buy it if you neevr bought halo 3 dlc maps because it has all of them included ina second disk
1 of da best halos cant wait for reach
Halo 3 ODST: It for once takes a turn telling the story from a normal soilder instead of a super strong, psychopathic batman wannabe spartan.
the antialiasing in this game is pretty funny
halo 3 odst had the most emotional campaign.....poor rookie he's so lonely
Same here. I think the game is a good contender for game of the year, but it isn't worth the price tag.
Its dumb how you can't kill the elites in this game. I'm glad they brought back the health bar from halo 1. Its like if the marine has a shield of his own, but the annoying bleeping noise bugs me when the character is low on health.

Bought this game at Target on clearance for $9.00 recently. Yeah, that's right. :)
Oh
Damn
Sailing
Tailor
It looks much better with Halo 3, it actually has a degree of a stylized look, it's just a shame that it's very much borrowed from Aliens and other such things
I didn't buy this game but it would be awesome to talk about film theory.
This is a really cool game, although I like Fallout 3 a lot more, this is still a really cool game.
hi mark

actually ive heard it has 6 hours and fire fight a type of co op survival is new to the online
I'm done with the Campain and I thought that it was really short.
@pkfire343 loved the campaign style... that style just isn't something i wanna see in other halos but loved it.. it was something fresh and the MP disc was cool

he reviewed doom
i'm sure he will get around to it
but i have no problem seeing what he has to say about new stuff
1:10
He said Halo 4... GUESS WHAT COMES OUT IN TWO DAYS?! :D
graphics-wise: this is great. even for a ps3 fanboy like me.
@hardcoreLazors when it first came out it was a full 60$
There are a lot of shooter elements of fallout 3.
Fallout 3 is just a shooter with rpg elements attached to it.
I think iknow what the piano music is for.
It to help gamers relax and not end up like the angry german kid
Obsessive Ducks Sent Torpedos
It's on the first disk.
@Wedwickboy if it takes place between 2 and 3 and it serves as prequel to 3 then it should have been 2 odst
Old ducks sing tunes anyway this was my second favorite halo next to reach this really showed a more human side of the war where you really wanted to know more about the city the characters and the rookie the cheif is getting kind of old they really need to change it up for the next game
yeah, Bladerunner!
odst has the best music ever!

HD needed! The current video quality's not so good.
Yea, even though i'm a halo fan and not a COD fan. i'll agree with you. ODST was rushed. It was just gonna be a DLC but then they decided to make up there mind. Honestly it's not game of the year material.
