Toy Caldwell was a Marine who got a purple hart in Vietnam.
God rest his soul.

I was born in 1961 in my opinion there's NO BETTER Music than the 70's and 80's
Amen! Late 60’s too!
Never realized how good I had it growing up and how bad it had gotten until I started seeing videos like this. There's still good music being made, but back then it seems like it was every other song.
I was born in 1961, too, and agree wholeheartedly
1960; rock and country
There isn't.
Lead singer Toy Caldwell (RIP) wrote this song during his time as a US Marine during the Vietnam war as his fellow Marines were getting dear John letters. Great song he is missed try Fire on the mountain and herd it in a love song great southern rock band
Heard it in a Love Song, another great song by Marshall Tucker
I love that song, best flute since "Locomotive Breath"
Yes, my favorite TMTB song!
The black and white live performance is indeed incredible, but this is also incredible. Glad you started here :)
Agreed it is a must. I personally didn't see it until decades later, after hearing it my entire life. I was astounded by the performance and how soulful he (Toy Caldwell) sings for his youth and how effortless he makes it look.
I love the studio version.. That black & white video lacks the piano, & I’m an air-piano player
I hate it when reactors start with the live versions. They miss so much nuance from the intended studio version.
Amazing!!!
Toy Caldwell wrote it, sang it, played guitar on it, and died WAAAY too young. These guys were right up there with the Allman Brothers back in their time.
Fire on the Mountain is great too
I think that is a Charlie Daniels Band cut, though I could be 'misremembering', either way, it is a good one !
@@charlierussell6577It’s Marshall Tucker
@@charlierussell6577 you misremembered.
Ramblin on My Mind is fire
one of the best songs ever recorded. and yes, this is southern rock done right.
Imagine growing up with music like this, something like this released every few weeks. A new album always meant descending on some buddy's house to listen to every track over and over again.
Heard it in a Love Song and Fire on the Mountain. Seriously, don’t miss these songs.
I was lucky enough to see The Marshal Tucker band and The Charlie Danials band together in the late 70’s. Absolutely incredible!
Love me some good ole southern rock
❤
This is southern rock at it's finest. The flute solo at the beginning & end is great. Love their music from the 70's. Some of their other big hits were "Fire on the Mountain" & "Heard It in a Love Song". Southern rock fiddler Charlie Daniels did quite a few collaborations with them.
Southern rock has a lot of soul, this is some of the best southern rock
I live 35 minutes from Spartanburg SC and have enjoyed listening and watching this band since 1973. Thanks for picking this band to view.
I went through a Tucker phase, and still enjoy hearing the classics. Thanks for giving them a listen!
We're just starting our Tucker phase... lol
Saw them when they were at their peak in the late 70s. They were so good live.
When they recorded their records, they basically just played 'live' in the studio and went with the take.
They loved to play.
I'm envious.
Same here! Saw them in my hometown Chicago, twice and once north in Wisconsin at Alpine Valley! Just a super great live band! My ex-wife became their "groupie for life" LOL!!
Saw them at a rock festival at White Horse mountain by mount Baker Wa. Besides going to Strurges it’s the best three day party I’ve ever been to. Good times.😎👍🏻
I’ve been listening to them since the 1970s and never get tired of them!!!
I remember vividly back in 1973 when I was in college hearing this track on the radio. I hopped in my VW Beetle and drove down to Tower Records in San Jose, Ca. to snatch me a copy. About a year later I was lucky enough to see them when they opened for The Allman Brothers Band at the Cow Palace in Oakland, Ca. Charlie Daniels was in the lineup as well. What a great show. Take care...
No. That man said, " Gonna climb a mountain, the highest mountain, gonna jump off ain't nobody gonna know."
Bro is heartbroken.
This defines my high school years. I'm sitting here reliving the best times of my life.
pure soul food. never gets old
Southern Rock at it's best.⭐.Classic.✌❤
Heard it in a Love Song - Fire on The Mountain ( great story telling in this one)
My brother used to have 2 acres surrounded by cornfields. My "city-slicker" brother in law was down for a visit. He was not familiar with TMTB. Sitting in lawn chairs, drinking beer, watching the sun set over the corn, with this band playing in the background - and he says "I've got tears in my eyes".
I saw them in the early 70's with "Heart" and "Traffic" All three bands were great!!!
That is an epic trio man! I totally envy you! Finally getting to see Heart in December. Can't wait!!
Adding the Marshall Tucker Band to your repertoire is a great move!! Try "24 Hours at a Time"
Especially the live version with Charlie Daniels on fiddle, which is arguably my favorite Tucker song, but probably kinda long for a reaction
When a song starts with a flute you know it's gonna be a banger
I think you'd love seeing the live version from the Oprey. It's in black and white and the audio cuts out briefly. But the talent of everyone in this band stands out!
Southern Rock back then was just amazing. Mixing Rock, Blues and Country the music has to come from the soul.
every time i hear this song i say oh man what a great tune and crank it up great musically and great lyrically just awesome
Same with me! Incredible tune!
hell yea, here in Spartanburg SC they are referred to as "The Home Team"
I'm up the street, in Duncan ☺️ 👋
I lived in Spartanburg (Camp Croft) back when they were there! LOVED them!
24 hours at a time, another classic by them.
Toy Caldwell one of the greatest to ever take a stage. A phenomenal guitarist
Blackfoot "Train,, Train" & "Highway Song" 🔥
A true classic... one for the ages ✌️🙂
Good ole' southern Rock-n-Roll 🤠🎸
Back in the mid '90s my band got to open for these guys twice. Really, really good and nice guys too.
Saw the world's greatest band twice. This song live with Toy on lead percussion picking with his thumb . Front row in an indoor arena on a chair. Paul and George and Tommy......Doug is the real lead singer.
You need to react to "Heard it in a Love Song". I think you'll enjoy it! Also "Fire on the Mountain"!
So many great bands in the day and growing late 60's all of the 70's and 80's it was Incredible.
Glad you guys start with album versions, thats how we learned of bands back in the day. Live performances later when they toured, videos didn't exist yet.
I can't believe no one had requested this gem of a song before but so glad you guys discovered it on your own. 👍🏼
Epic. Love this song.
You really need to see a live performance from the early-mid 1970s... the lead guitarist, Toy Caldwell, who sings lead on this song, picks his guitar with his thumb and NO pick. Most of their songs have their "official" lead singer, rather than Toy. Toy's brother Tommy is another of the band's guitarists.
A great group! Awesome song ! Awesome reactions ❤🙏
Good southern rock from Spartanburg S.C.
“Fire On the Mountain “ is another great one from this group!
Take the Highway!! This song really shows off musicality 🔥🤘✌
One of my all-time favorite songs! What we used to call southern-fried rock, back in the day. Great lyrics and instrumentation, awesome guitar work and vocals. A true banger!
Maybe check out some Outlaws, if you haven't yet :)
The flute was a wonderful instrument on this one
Lead singer Toy Caldwell has an awesome southern soulful vibe. Quite the pipes! He also served in Vietnam in the Marine Corps prior to his musical career.
24 Hours is a Great tune. Grew up with these guys, Good People..
Great instrumentals also! “Feel the same way”
Thank you so much for reacting to this song! Every time I hear it, it takes me to a very specific place and time. So many memories ✌🏻
You might also enjoy The Allman Brothers Band
And start with "Statesboro Blues"! Also Check out Larkin Poe, known as " Little Sisters of the Allman Brothers". Their live version of "Summertime Sunset", "Ex-Con" or "Trouble in Mind" are good places to start. Watch out for the rabbit hole, they have about 125+ cover songs on RUclips, just the two Lovell Sisters, in a spare room with their guitars, playing everything from Simon and Garfunkle, to Black Sabbath to Kansas to Robert Johnson to Bob Seger. A great version of Three Dog Night's " Never been to Spain" has killer slide guitar work by Megan, just the Sisters and Mark Agnessi, sitting on a couch with guitars. That one is on Julie Meyers channel.
Top notch Southern Rock musicianship.
Fire on the Mountain and Heard it in a Love Song.
Live version is a must!!!
One of my top favorite songs❤️
This is one of my all time favorite songs . It has helped me through many breakups
“This Ole Cowboy “ is a great one by them. It shows off their instrumental talents
Loved it then, love it now. Great reaction.
If you like Southern rock , check out Molly Hatchett - my favorite is "Flirtin' With Disaster"
I saw TMTB in concert when they were performing this album. Good show. You'd also like their "Fire on The Mountain" and "Heard It In A Love Song".
Such a beautiful song. Absolutely love it.
Such a great song! The live version is also great to watch.
The fact that you opt for the studio version when first listening to a 'new' group is the main reason I am a fan of you guys! Because that's the way most of their fans first heard them! Love it! Thank you! Concerts and live performances are great, but sometimes they don't sync up with the sound you first heard and what's in your memory!! Peace out...
Top ten greatest song of all time ❤
Marshall Tucker band, Just don"t get much better than that, Toy Caldwell played his guitar with just his thumb, Never used a pick!
You’re going to really enjoy the video of their live performance. ❤ Love yalls reaction!❤
I remember one week in the early '70s. I was working up near Spartanburg, SC. One Friday after work we went to some roadhouse out in the sticks. it was $5 to get in, first beer was free.
Turned out to be the first time I had ever heard of Marshall Tucker.
II It was a good night.
They were our musical heroes when I was in college. I even picked the guitar mostly with my thumb because that's the way Toy did it.
I wore this album out in the 80s. Anything you choose from them is great.
A cornerstone of Southern rock, they were one of my favorite bands growing up. Heard it in a Love Song, Fire on the Mountain, Take the Highway, Searching for a Rainbow are some of my favorite songs.. And yes the band was also known for having a flautist, Jerry Eubanks, in the band.
Maybe the best song ever!
I've seen MTB more times than I can count,my all time favorites live band, soooo much fun to see live
Guys, I love that you went the studio route, and I love you took into consideration the time and opted to go with the longer unedited version. Other reactors mostly go with the black-and-white live video while this version for me is king. While I appreciate, live carts for me, the studio version is usually my favorite. Thanks for the reactions. I’m glad I subbed a while back. This song is in my top three all-time, and I was really excited to see the thumbnail and to realize you went with the studio version.
Because she was a mean old woman. She never told him goodbye.
Excellent reaction to an excellent song.
I was a teen in the 70s and loved Marshall Tucker and this song! Seems there was a lot of Southern Fried Rock back then!! Thanks for doing this one. Take the Hwy and Fire on the Mountain are great too! They incorporate that flute in all their songs!
I saw them play at the 3 day Ozark Music Festival in '74. They were amazing!
I was there! It was crazy as hell. I loved Joe Walsh and Barnstorm. I was down front for a bit. Couldn't hear very well for a day or so. LOL
Great song , story, vocals, and instrumentals by the band. Heard It On A Love Song is their most popular tune and worth reacting to!
Another great one ! Love this band keep diving in you wont be sorry :)
I have always loved the sense of movement in their songs!
Yes! The black and white version ❤
“24 Hours at a Time” is a fantastic song and the live album version is 14 minutes with great instrumentals! You two would love every minute of it and would probably be laid back with eyes closed listening to it!
Saw them in ‘74 in Tulsa with great seats about 8-10 rows back right in front of Toy Caldwell and brother Tommy Caldwell, the co-founders! Also in 2002 in Tulsa, OK when Doug Gray was the band leader (he was one drunk cookie that night, unfortunately), but his voice was as clear as ever!
Heard it in a Love Song, Fire on the Mountain, This Ole Cowboy, and Take the Highway are other fantastic songs TMTB.
More Southern Rock! Y’all not had enough!
Fire on the Mountain
Heard it in a Love Song
To me, this is some good ol' southern rock! It's road tripping music too...❤
Good ole toe tapping southern rock.
Damn we had the BEST music!! 🤩
Great reaction, Sam and Phil!
I listened to lots of Southern Rock back in the 70s. Along with Lynyrd Skynyrd an The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker was one of my favorites. Take the Highway, In My Own Way, 24 Hours at a Time, and Ramblin' are good songs in addition to what others have mentioned.
Wow - this really brings me back! Interesting the 1970’s I went to a concert at the Meadowlands (NJ) and saw Little River Band, Journey and Aerosmith. What an awesome concert, and I was only 15 or 16 🤘
To this day....in 2024, and since 1975, this band's live version of '24 Hrs at a Time', is still my favorite song of all time. I have invited a lot of music into my life, and many many genres. Nothing has been able to topple that tune from the top of my pile. Great song here as well.....
MTB was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥!!! THANKS, YA'LL!!! HUGS!
I always thought the flute was a nod to a train horn.
This is one of those bands that you can't decide whether the studio version or the live version is better. . . .they're amazing on stage. . . . enjoyed the reaction, as always!
My favourite song of theirs is I heard it in a love song!
Great band. I've seen them live several times. They blew me away. Take The Highway is a favorite
Great song and reaction
Saw them too in the "70"s!! BEST 2 Decades of MUSIC 1960's ,1970's and I GOT TO EXPERIANCE IT ALL , IM GLAD I WAS BORN IN 1958!! 🎸🐐🔥😍😁
Tommy & Toy Caldwell were two of the original members of the band and sadly died very young in highway accidents about a year apart. They were from the Spartanburg area of S.C. and were my exes cousins. Her grand mother always talked about them and their friends sitting on their mothers front porch playing music before they ever got famous.
Tommy and Tim Caldwell (the 3rd brother, but not in the band) died in March (Tim) and April (Tommy) 1980 - one month apart on the same stretch of road.
Toy died of heart failure in Feb 1993.
