As a kiwi I couldn’t resist watching to see whether you released that beast of a snapper or not. Stoked to see you let that big breeder go. So many people these days don’t and it’s really hammering the ability of the fish stocks to handle fishing pressure. Thanks for being a considerate and caring visitor Taku! If you want any suggestions of places to go fishing or things to do feel free to get in touch, I’m a tour guide and have traveled NZ extensively for work and pleasure and always happy to help :)

The best breaders are 45-65cm ones. Also that fish has bred for 50+ years. Makes more sense killing one old one compared to stopping 7 ones from 40+ years of breading.
      Personal opinion I guess.
I would just rather take one fish to feed everyone.

@@thedcash26 decades of catching snaps during spawning season. The roe is amazingly bright coloured and beautiful texture in those size fish, the 20lb / 80cm fish have a definite lack of colour and texture. Also killing one big one and stopping the future potential spawn cycles of that singular fish has way less impact then stopping the potential spawn cycles of 7 fish each one many many years younger.

Especially in a remote area like he was in, to catch one that size from shore and not on a boat, says alot of the ecosystem there. The problem is there's too many of them, you see how he caught alot of smalls and only one giant one ? You need to get rid of the small ones to produce the giants. We do it well here in texas, which is why we have big black drums and big redfish u can catch right off the jetties.

Well done Taku! This must have felt like redemption after losing the monsters previously.
Just wanna share one point though if you're reading this, circle hooks are not meant to be set violently. Yanking it hard will tend to lose you the fish as the hook may slip out of the mouth. Instead, just let the fish take the bait and reel back slowly until the tension gradually tightens and the hook will set perfectly on the mouth.
Tight lines and may you enjoy every bit NZ offers you.

I'm a grown man but I definitely teared up with joy when you landed THAT fish. So awesome. I was so stoked for you and would have reacted the same way.
I had been fishing with my Dad in Hawaii my whole life and we did a lot of shore fishing. The year before he passed, on his birthday, I had the biggest fish (I think) hooked of my life and after a long battle, I lost it. It was gut wrenching. Dad wasn't able to be on the shore with me during the fight (though I was calling for him to come down) and I remember telling him the story later and he too was both excited and disappointed.
But I also remember him sharing with me that this was all about. You try. You fight. You win some and you lose some. And though I never had the chance to fish with him again after that, I still remember that day (and all the times I fished with him) and give thanks for the memories. I still think about what it would have been like to maybe have landed THAT fish with him being there. So yeah, when you lose some of those fights, I feel that. But when you landed that beast, I couldn't help but feel that was a win for me too.
Side note: I wish your channel existed when he was here -- he would have LOVED it, especially these last two videos. He would easily have teared up too. All this to say, keep up this amazing content and adventure, living life to the fullest. Thanks for being a great role model for fisherman in lots of different ways and thanks to all the work you and Jocelyn do to provide this awesome content. Keep living stoked and with gratitude. Looking forward to your next adventure.

Lucky guy, most people fish all their lives and never catch a 10-kilo-plus snapper. You did mostly right, maybe let the big snaps run a little more before you set the hook. You went to the right place to catch big fish so you deserve some luck. Have a great time in NZ!
