Soz about the skanky fingers! i had been fixing my car all day. you know how hard it is to get that crap off your fingers!!!
also step drill bits, yes yes yes, because i haven't got a workbench in my place its not very practical to cut big holes on flat panels with a step drill, hence using the big mumma
The extra video I shot about some more details about my experience with the build right here :- ruclips.net/video/YqV5OIyyZX8/видео.html

We want to see you write your own rhythms man. If you build it -- we will come
Those filenames are great :D
Awesome samples, thanks a lot!
4:30 He clearly is watching rick and morty haha :'D lol
I’ve always thought that the CR78 looks very nice.
"They sound like really small horses running around in there...because they're scared of the crickets". That's the money shot.
Daniel Lee
Tiny elvish folk hitting tiny drums, shaking their tiny bottoms to the tiny rhythms.
Brilliant!
I used to gig with one back in 1979. Yes, I’m that old 😭
Nice!
I was around but too young to come to your gig in 1979. but if I coulda, I woulda. I was 9 in 1979.
In 1979 I was 4, but I do remember my Dad playing Roxy Music's 'Dance Away' and a small amount of the percussion sounded like a CR-78. That's where I fit into the story haha.
EDIT: Just done a quick google and the percussion on 'Dance Away' was a Roland TR-66. I guess I'm in limbo now!
I bought my first one in 1984. It was considered junk at that time and I paid around €50 for it. I still have that same one today (and bought 3 more over the years). I love that sound (and hate the battery that was inside).
Time is an illusion my brother 🌀🌀🌀
When this machine came out, not many musicians saw the potential of this little machine and it's game changing effect on the development of making music. Before, it all depended more or less on the capability of the drummer, rather than the capability of a composer. I remember quite well, that many drummers hated this machine so much for two good reasons. First, many studios started to use it for synchronization of human drummers by being played on the headset as a click signal and this had an slight effect in the means of production, second, and this was the worst effect, the cr78 was making on some tracks of an album drummers in bands jobless. In the old days everything around "programming" was something super special, even when it was just a 4bars 4to4 basic beat. This felt really like rocket science for the society and musicians. Today, for many people its just kinda cute, but to me this little machine represents the door opener for musicians with higher capabilities in production and programming, rather in composing and conducting.
Beautiful oak finish, so it wouldn't look out of place, in your grandmothers living room.
Grandma can buy one with all her money money money.
True it looks like it should have a matching cocktail cabinet.
actually it's wallnut..
He was out of breath when he was writing this comment
Honestly, I kind of miss when drum machines looked like pieces of furniture. Hope that makes a comeback
I remember a load of CR-78 samples I got off a CD in the 90's and they were some great sounds and I spent long times trying to emulate these sounds by feeding the samples into an audio analysis and resynthesis program called SPEAR
- Sinusoidal Partial Editing Analysis and Resynthesis to understand the sounds better and how to copy the sounds make up and then used the units in Reason in a pseudo modular synth fashion and built the sounds!
I'd definitely like to see a video on creating that programming pedal for this machine.
And still excited to see you make that Power Glove controller for the GameBoy MegaMachine 🥊🎶😁
powerglove on its way! im building a robotic hand to test it its taking a while
LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER oh hell yes!
@@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER woah!! so cool!
this grandpa cr78 knows how to rock...
You couold call it a 'boomer box' ;O) (sorry)
Guiro (pronounced wiiroh) is also a slang word for a joint in Peru.
It's a percussion instrument based on taking a big fat gourd, cutting ridges into it, and then running a stick along it... So that would be one plump j!
Wey es instrumento en México 😭
Love the snare on that thing and listening to John Foxx's Metamatic where he used it on pretty much every track.
Got the Unipulse in my Roland TR-77 and it's awesome, but it doesn't do clock, just midi. Those preset rhythms are always bursting with character, would love to be able to clock them.
Anyway, enjoyed this Sam. Particularly the mangled 78 at the end. Delicious.
Good motning Sam, i used to have a cat that was infatuated with my Yamaha SY-1 and Moog Prodigy. Every time i played he would jump up and help me
haha!!! damn cats!
For years when i was a pretty awful bedroom dj a cat scratched at the door. Well, it actually screamed and hissed and tried to claw through the door to get out. It wasn't our cat.
@@sabre22b Nice one.
I have adopted a cat and every now and then, I have a "what the" moment when he runs past. Oh the second cat!
I’ve seen quite a few CR-78 videos on youtube. This has got to be by far the best one out there. Well done.
I’d be interested in a diy programing pedal, btw.
Nice mod! Phil Collins used this on “In The Air Tonight”. I’ve always found his combination of using drumcomputers and reals drums quite refreshing. A very bold thing to do for a drummer. Lots of drummer criticized Phill for it but I think it was different and creative. The drumcomputers just expanded his sonic colour palette. This drumcomputer is also used by some Roxy music song.
dykodesigns2yt Phil talks about in his autobiography. Roland offered CR78s to the guys in Genesis, Tony & Mike said “domo arigatou”, but Phil went “I’m a drummer, I don’t want no stinking drum machine”. Then he started writing the songs that ended up on Face Value, realised it could come in handy, and got back on to Roland, cap in hand.
That's what happens when cats need to go shopping on eBay...
You should see what my dog buys at 2am when I'm drunk.
Please build the box that goes with this. 15:13 reminds me of the song KITTY KITTY by De Staat
P.S. I would pay money for a song with you talking like you were while manipulating the beat. "I don't want the high hats" *high hats stop* "I want the BASS" *Bass explodes*
David L oh yeah man!

You can pull the rhythm sections out of old home organs and get useful sounds out of them. You can sometimes get old Lowery or Conn or Estey organs from estate sales for hauling them off at the end. Some have speakers that work great for guitar too.
I am all for seeing more of anything great content as always totally loved the beats going on especially that heart of glass bit. loved the retro stuff, really set the gears in my head. On a side note my girlfriend was saying that watching you is like watching me operate but with synthesizers. I asked her if that was an issue and she said "No just don't turn my Furby's into a organ." She supposedly has a collection at her parents house. XD
Hi thanks for the great video. Love it!
Always happy to see our upgrades put to good use :)
Imagine using this to do breakdown and build ups whilst you’re playing your bontempi organ at the old folks home....
Damn, those custom Electro Harmonix Effects Pedalssss! :D
sharpie!!! hahaha
You seem like you are preparing to release the world's greatest techno album. I'll be honest a bit disappointed if you don't.
As a fan of John Foxx, I have a soft spot for the sound of this drum machine. And now when I saw how it was programmed back then, my admiration for 'Metamatic' grew even more. Thank you for the video. Pity it isn't possible to like it more than once xD
The Endorphin.es Black_Noir Eurorack module is based upon this Unit. - awesome video, and shows a good alternative to the usual 808/909 sounds.
Damn. I'd consider that fuzz pedal mandatory for using that machine. It really moves the sound from "cartoon" to "caricature," in a good way. So much more depth.
Guiro is meant to be pronounced “Gweero”.
It has grooves, and you play it by rubbing it... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%BCiro
Awesome!!! Would be interesting to watch a memory pedal being created for this!
cool! ill look into it
Just fixing my CR-78 as we speak. Interested in cloning the original WS programmer, I'll probably do that next. Very cool video, thanks.
Wow, this sounds amazing! Blondie approved!:)
go to 12:40 and literally just watch the grin on your face grow with every new instrument
EXACTLY! Autonomous cheek muscle response!
1:50 slow down the tempo and you got Blonde Heart of Glass. HAH!

Tubbutec unipulse :- @t
I should totally accidentally bid on a Roland CR-78
You sir are a brilliant light in this world. Thanks for the inspiration! I lack your skill with the soldering iron.
Sam. Buddy. You really oughta put that big, tall, and heavy-looking synth rack on something that wont let it rock from side to side whenever you touch it. It looked like it was about ready to fall over on you. :-/
It's meant to do that 😅
Classic Electro Haronix pedals have a feature that I really love. The jacks are on the back! So you can em really close together on top of things> I see you leveraging that feature! You're a brave man modding a high dollar piece of kit like a CR78. Nice one
Loved this, especially you going nuts with the Balance control. 😂 I see you using the Cirklon and I'm curious if you've ever messed around with the MIDIphy MBSEQ V4+, Sam. Seeing as it's DIY it'd be interesting hearing your take on it, even just as a build/demo.
Yeah like this content. Its kinda " Look mum no computer" originals"
Some pretty aggressive sounds.
Love it!!!
rarrrrrr
Just like you did I also sold one of those years ago for about £15 because I was skint. sad mistake.
"I'm trying to think of what a sensible person would do in times like these"
Me- dump it out on the floor everywhere
"Obviuosly they would get a vacuum cleaner to do this"
Oh...
P.s love your videos you amazing Gyropean ❤
HAL called and wants his mom to come back home! Quality space age material right there.
Always makes my day to glance at the subscription page and see your videos pop up. Thanks for doing what you do, man.. cheers!
I would loveeee to see you go on Omegle and play for people
In the voice of Arnold Schwarzenegger, "15 millimeter!"
By the end you were getting into Aphex Twin and FSOL territory. We need some full songs from you that use this setup.
GARY NUMAN LOVED THAT THING I CAN TELL YA!
*Ребята давайте попросим его сделать русские субтитры!!!! Реально канал крутой!!!!!крутые видосы пилит!!!!!!*
Nothing is accidentally done on bids to a CR78... Proper old GARY NUMAN DAYS...... lovely old machine.....
gwee-ro
you should make this into a standalone song!
Wicked, our favourite drum machine right there.
:D
The price of these just jumped.
I can't stop rewatching 5:10-5:15 ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME YOU MAD SCIENTIST
LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER Is the Korg KR 55B Better or same? I have seen a new updated/clone looking version on another Moog Subharmonicon video, help/thanks?
I just watched someone demo how Phil Collins created the drumbeat for “In The Air Tonight” with one of these.
Please, make a video about the DIY programmer. The original programmers are insanely expensive right now (I swear it was less expensive before the pandemic - I've been keeping an eye on one), and using a Roland footswitch, as I've been doing, feels... wrong. I mean wrong, really: I'm under the impression that I can't ever get the tempo right. The WS-1 is meant to make programming easier and "spot-on", so a DIY alternative would be awesome.
this is the annoying drumcomputer from the chuck norris movie "missing in action",or?(when he comes to the "disco district" in vietnam^^)
whole track only drums...always the same 16 steps, felt forever!
Anybody reading this know how to repair and restore a Roland compurhythm CR-78 at all ? ? Need to hear from you..Get in touch..Leave email so can contact you. Many thanks !
Damn man, you're good, you fire that thing up for the first time and immediately it's a great track!
Hey man, I love watching your videos! I think your concept is cool... I am beginning to feel like there's no escaping the DAW! Ha
LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER correct me if I'm wrong, but this is what the Cirklon is based on>?
ISMSLOL.
What a cheese factory that thing is.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sounds like ‘2 Live Crew’ way back
Whooop whooot🤣
🤫🤫🤫🤫
Don’t tell anyone it’s CAF and I want one.....can you meet me behind the bowling alley/roller rink?
I really want to see the pedal making video! I love maker electronics and your videos so double bonus!
THIS SHIT HITS SOOO FUCKING HARD OMG.... I have the pedals, just need the unit
OMG your memory man and electric mistress are still working great !!! They look like they've been through a good life ;-)
Man this CR 78 is a freakin good add-on in your setup !!! these things are legendary , keeping one is a good investment too
CricketRhythym78... powered internally by 78 crickets!!!
Does anyone remember 7-11's Slurpy Rock Cups? "7-11's got Slurpy Rock Cups!"
it looks to me, like tub-but-ec..👈😒👺👌
you are a smart guy, you could re-design the start time issue's.👈👽
hey , I just heard a preset that Robert Smith and Steve Severin used for The Glove album , cool !! go cr78!! for the old school points
Hearing the crisp sounds of the CR78 makes wanna start up a colourful street gang that roams around with our boom boxes challenging other gangs to sick dance battles in the street, and we all end up friends in the end. Either that, or just re-enacting "The Warriors.".
I have a Roland Rhythm Arranger with no clock :[ I'm wondering if I would be able to modify it to take CV input. It's an old man
For the noobs in electronic like me... There is also the TT78. A cool modern replica made by the people behind the TT303 and 606...
lol man, love your style! no bull. Roger Linn would have a chuckle at this, he called the grass hoppers crickets hehe
I too grabbed one off ebay several years ago for about $900 USD, but I can't blame the cat - he was licking his paws at the time 🤣
They have been locked in for more than 40 years and had to follow such strict and oppressive rules! Finally you make the grasshoppers dance :)
Even if I (likely) never own one, make a video on the diy pedal. It's like a historical resource! I'd watch.
While watching this video I had the nagging suspicion I'd heard this instrument before but then the bit at 6:45-7:00 made it click: it's the drum machine used on I Am A Camera by the Buggles! This drum machine basically defines half the sound of that song; if they'd used anything else it would have been a very different song.
I wouldn't recommend a beginner in electronics doing this....The CR78 is way too expensive to try and circuit bend like this...
Can you imagine how many peeps, back in the late 70s experienced the exact feeling at 13 minutes (in this vid) when they hooked up these machines
damn once u hooked up those pedals
A Güiro is a Latin American hollow gourd thingy with notches cut in the sides. You play it by running a stick along it, making a kind of ratchet sound.
As soon as you brought in the HH/CY metallic beat… I heard the endorphin.es blck_noir!
is it stable so it could be used as main clock and use cd4013 flip flops to divide down to 24 PPQN?
like the sh-101 sub oscillator schematic from Tom.
The only thing this beauty is missing is a MORE COWBELL BUTTON!
I like you more and more - , but save a little of what youre on ,-......for ME !🧂🤴🏿
I would love to see that DIY programming pedal video, sure.... But honestly Sam, I watch all your videos... I would sure like to watch more modding / circuit bending vids, many do these, but your approach and 'punk' mentality is such a joy to watch. cheers
cool will look into it!!! i dont know wether its punk really i like to think its just not particularly precious and up for experiments :D
:D :D ill look into sorting out the pedal vid!!!
You had a bit of the drum pattern from the track ATOMIC by Blondie.
That fuckin gyro sound! That's the sound from Squeeze's Take Me I'm Yours! Great track, that.
This was the primary drummer on the Hall & Oates H2O album. Rock-1 is "I can't go for that". LOL
no can do!
if you were alive 40-50 years ago, you would have revolutionized the way people create music
Were you triggering the unipulse with the beatstep?c doesn't seem to work with electron gear. Thanks!
Your videos never fail to leave me in awe and excited to hit the work bench, great stuff mate!
My first exposure to such a device was as a kid in the late 70's. My friends mother had, in the living room (that you were not allowed to enter) with plastic-encased sofas (that you were not allowed to sit upon), one of those giant fancy multi-keyboard electronic organs that wealthy people owned if they wanted a futuristic alternative to a traditional acoustic piano. It had a mesmerizing rhythm section with all of those same wonderfully-clicky multi-colored plastic buttons for the same list of exotic beats. This machine, of course was never to be touched as well. And we, of course experimented with this thing for hours until she came home from shopping.
gwayro made me lol, Güiro is Spanish so it should be said like this in English, wii ro. Not entirely true but close
Get yourself a stepped drillbit Sam. you won't go back to drilling sheetmetal with standard bits. ;-)
Haha yes sam i have the same problem with vintage strowger gpo telephone equipment and avometers lol model 8 mk2 the Robot heads im sure you have come across them in your museum of everything lol
I usually find your jokes pretty funny but this video had me fucking dying😂
My mate has a CR-8000 that I was messing with yesterday. Man, you read my effing mind.
those ram chips can be replaced with a batteryless backup version if they are indeed 5101 ram chips. they aren't that cheap but it means you can cut the corrosive mess of a battery out of there entirely
I have heard the music of the future, and it is performed by insects and tiny horses, apparently...
