    Share your pumpkinseed bits! 🎣 Or you can just talk about my wonderfully terrible French accent. 😄

    You know how it's fascinating to watch someone who really knows and cares about their subject, even if you don't really care about the subject yourself? That's your videos. Like, wow, a RUclips video that is also an encyclopedia article. Pumpkinseeds are my favorite Leopmid, but just because they look cool. And the name is good. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

      Much appreciated! I know birds are your main passion. Very cool to know the pumpkinseed is your favorite of the common sunfishes! Cheers!

    I catch Pumpkinseed Sunfish regularly in North Alabama in waters of The Tennessee River Valley. They've been here thirty five years I know of. In Spring it's easy to find them on beds in sandy or gravel areas in the shallows. They'll hit top water as well as subsurface same as any other Sunfish. Of course the deeper down they are you have to go subsurface.

    This video helped me to realize how many different variations of the pumpkin seeds there are

    • @KNFishingSmarts
      @KNFishingSmarts  8 месяцев назад

      Yeah, variation within species and between populations can be quite extensive! Cheers!

    Stoked to see what you catch on the Mule Fishing gear! Thank you so much for the kind words and for showcasing the gear. Sorry I am just now getting to this :/ life has been so crazy.
    The day will come for us to group up and film/fish. Can't wait for that day! Hope all is well my friend.

      No worries man - totally get it! And I am behind on fully testing out your gear as I blew out my back in Michigan. I'm really loving the wiggle of the plastics so far and their durability. One day we will get together and get some good fishing in. All the best!

    I catch pumpkin seed here in central southern KY along the TN/KY border. Their range seems to be expanding.

    I think the bluegills are hybrids in Austin lakes. They clearly breed. A parks and wildlife icthylogist that lives in a community near my old home said these massive 4 lbs sunfish were bluegill hybrids that had stabilized in a spring near our house but nobody would recognize them. I catch them occasionally and they get massive. Also we get all sorts of cave minnows and tetras, and Gambusia that could be sold as high dollar bettas. I don’t tell anyone where these holes are as the locals would decimate them.

    • @KNFishingSmarts
      @KNFishingSmarts  2 года назад

      Yeah, hybrids typically have faster growth rates and can reach big sizes. And I do understand about keeping prize fishing holes a secret!

    I live up in Ontario and i must say all my biggest Pumpkinseeds came in deeper weed beds, unless during spawning season, and those pumpkinseed/green sunfish hybrids are a hell of a lot more aggressive! :O

    Certain populations of Longear sunfish (or whatever species it might might be called in the future) have in my opinion even more beautiful colors with bright red and blue

    • @KNFishingSmarts
      @KNFishingSmarts  2 года назад

      Definitely Andrew! Those longear species complex males in breeding colors can just be explosions of amazing colors.

    Great info on that rig. I had never heard of a floating jig head. What exactly is the indication that you have a fish on? Same as other techniques where you get that tap tap tap?
    Looking forward to your review on the Mule Fishing products. I still haven't bought any but your review will definitely help me make up my mind.

    • @KNFishingSmarts
      @KNFishingSmarts  3 года назад

      Hey David. Yeah on the floating jig head rig the common sunfishes all make that tap-tap-tap. Usually it's the little ones playing with the leech. When a big one has it then it's usually tap-tap-pull and that's when you make the hook set. If a bass is on it's usually a slow pull as they just kind of suck the bait in and start slowly swimming off; a hook set needs to come about a half second into that pull.
      Thanks again for watching! Good luck if ya try out the floating jig head rig.

    Very interesting thank you for dropping all this knowledge! Unrelated question... But why does it seem like bluegill seem to be the most common? Do they have an advantage in reproduction?

    • @KNFishingSmarts
      @KNFishingSmarts  2 года назад +1

      Thanks. Yeah, bluegill have a few advantages. They are overall hardier fish and can tolerate a lot of water types. They're diet is very large so they don't have to specialize. They're also very aggressive and can outcompete other lepomids to food sources.

  • @gdubbya928

      Hmm...I haven't yet seen any pop-up on iNaturalist or other refs. Wouldn't be surprised though as people introduce pumpkinseed to random places.
