The Blacknose or Black-Stripe Crappie | A Life-List Fish?
Is the blacknose crappie just a black crappie? What is a magnolia crappie? Why is this fish sort of a rarity in our natural waters? Well, it begins with some interesting genetics. We'll cover the basics of genetic inheritance between recessive and dominant alleles in fishes. Then we'll touch on why this melanism is fairly rare and where to find some blacknose and magnolia crappie for fishing.

Green Sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) Identification Guide | Fishing Tips
I caught a tiger muskie today! Awaesome!!!!
Just found a pond loaded with them. They are super active and fun to catch. Used an H&H spinner
I fish little Miami & mad river and catch them all day it’s crazy hybrids all around 937 rivers
Which is better carolina or this drop shot from not getting snag?
After getting back into fishing since a kid. It's been 10 years. Trout fishing was my thing on ultralight and light gear for a while. Then I started bluegill fishing a little because I knew they were also good eating. The first green sunfish I caught were on bass or smallmouth lures and they were decent size. I thought they were smallmouth bass because there mouth was so much bigger than a bluegill and they were shaped a bit differently. I caught one the other day on a top water popper .
Can you do male and female for them? Some are easy but for example black bass you can’t really tell.
dang u r friends w the fish do u bass fish? do u recommend going thru the gill plate to to remove a "guthooked" bass?
that White Sucker looks allot like a Common Barbel without the barbels
these fishes really suck lol 😂
"two of the top three largest SUCKERS in the world" What hav they done to deserve this?? 😅
"those black and smallmouth buffalo... SUCKERS" lol Poor fishes got a super cruel last name 😢
btwi hope RUclips wouldn't censored off my comment for saying the fishes' namesake
Are these guys in Iowa?
Tie a barrel swivel at the end less like to fail than a surgeons not
Math and fishing? Yep this is my guy.
Hello! I absolutely love your videos and the care you take in preserving the fish in catch and release. one question regarding hook sizes: do these sizes apply to circle hooks as well? I use them to reduce gut hooking and have been struggling to find the right size. I mainly creek fish, so I'm catching a variety of fish that are about the size of a decent sized redbreast. Any tips as well? Keep it up!
Yeah I have to agree…Well Done!
New subscriber here. Your video was very informative. I just caught a small warmouth this past week and had misidentified it, thinking it was a rockbass. I brought it home to put in my aquarium. In just a few hours, it was eating chunks of worms.
good stuff man! loved the video. That was a cool mission. I have picked up fishing for sunfish after many years off...had to relearn all the taxonomy - which led me to this guide...nailed it!
My friends and I were fishing for bluegill (in a spot we thought only bluegill lived) and were absolutely shocked when we pulled a green sunfish out of the water, had no idea what it was! Thanks for the great info on these fish!
Love the bumper music! Very 1978 of you.
ASMR voice, math, AND fishing… 🤤🤤
can you do a drop-shot rig for micro fishing ?
Pick up a fly rod bro, you’ll love it. No need for bait.
Oh god the china virus days.
Try the nishini drop shot hooks.
My biggest trout bite was on dropshot.
Your presentation is easy... and the the message is clean and direct to follow! Amazing segment bro. I smashed the thumbs up and hit the sub button to show love. Thanks for taking the time to share.
so if i send you a picture of a fish could you confirm what it is lmao
If you want a great lure to fish on a dropshot for bigger sunfish use a Pautzke trout worm. They are stretchy like mule fishing lures. You can trim it down if you like. You can catch a bunch of fish on one worm.
Watched the video this morning and went out to the stingy city lake early afternoon and hot. Usually catch 2-4 fish. Tied the knot per your instructions and baited per instructions. Wow with the hook up properly caught 22 (they weren’t very big but it’s a heavily fished lake). Number 4 Aberdeen hook worked great. No one else was catching anything. What a blast!! That was the best knot video I’ve seen (the color helped). Thanks
My neighborhood has a man made block long channel or what we all call, community pond. I’ve live in this neighborhood for 14 years. Every spring we catch anywhere from 10 to 30 daily, just about everyone does the same thing, catch and release. Way to much fertilizer runoff in nicer neighborhoods to want to eat anything caught in these waters. Anyhow, in 14 years of fishing,I have never seen anything like you mentioned. Two months ago, I caught one of those and I honestly thought it was just a freak of nature. We have blackish and white crappies in this pond, so it must be a combination of the breading.
Just for more information…I’ve caught many more black nosed crappie from a known stocked reservoir than a local natural lake I fish..the natural lake has many more natural population and I’ve caught maybye 2…I’ve caught way less number wise in the reservoir but quite a few black nose..so my guess is that stocked fish have a better chance of getting blacknose
For practical purposes as recreational fisher, could a steel leader work to hang off of a swivel with the hook work? kinda like a tokyo rig. just so u don’t have to piss around with tying knots. i know this is all about feel so wondering if it will change things too much
Nice explanation and video! I worked at a fish hatchery that raised black nose crappie and every time we had a tour folks would ask if BN were a different species. It was always fun seeing color morphs in different species, even if many weren't long for this world.
Very cool Koaw! I caught them in Maryland a few years ago in a private pond, and then later in some public ponds. I wondered what the deal with that stripe was. If I caught them prior to that, then I probably just didn't notice them. But, the genetic story makes total sense and is really fascinating. Best wishes.
Do you still plan on catching the different long ear sub species?
I do...one day. I am so busy with my PhD program at the moment that I'm not sure when I'll be able to do it. =(
We have a spot here in NC that has Blacknose naturally existing. On a good day, mostly smaller fish, we can catch around 50 fish. Of thouse, maybe 4 or 5 will be Blacknose. I'm with you that on mixed normal and Blacknose populations, there is probably a lot of dispersal of the Blacknose genetics so probably a lot of the fish are carrying the genes, but only a few fish out of every spawning a coming out with the Blacknose trait. We don't havest much from this location, but when we do we exclusively only keep the normal looking fish to try to influence the amount of blacknose left to breed back, though I doubt it's enough to really effect much. I would love to take some of these fish and stock exclusively Blacknose into confined waters and the only harvest normal looking fish out as they spawn to greater the probability of Blacknose becoming the sole dominant trait in those waters. I've only done it a couple times, but nothing is cooler than bring up a 12" + Blacknose!
Ah, very cool! Yeah, it'd be a process to selectively breed them into a mostly blacknose population...especially in a wild system.
@@KNFishingSmarts Would be awesome once it was done! But if you are coming through NC sometime maybe we can swing by there so you check our locals out.
Cool 😎
Thanks for clearing up a lot for me Koaw!
Glad it helped clear some things up!
With upturned hook eyes, if the line comes out the top/back it tends to lever the hook point away from the fishes mouth, likely to result in missed bites or the fish becoming unpinned. The line should come out the front/bottom of the hook eye which will keep the hook point going into the fishes jaw.
Nice genetics lesson.
Glad you think so!
@@KNFishingSmarts I teach high school biology.
Great to see you back my friend!
Yup, been taking a break from this for a while...work is demanding.
First! KN u rock and what a gift to the community you are!
Appreciate that axps6457! Grats on first too.
Maybe the snake could have been used for bait to catch fish⁉🤔🐍🐟
@sarahlarson8226🤗 Yeah, they're slippery when wet🐍!!
Thanks for the advice and info
They showed up here a few years ago. In my local lake Ontario tributary. They seem to be populating quick time. I seem to not be able to catch pumpkinseed and bluegill anymore in the spots I catch the greens. 🤷🏻♂️ new friend here!
Great
This is the best fishing video I've ever seen! As a beginner, I found it incredibly informative and enjoyable. I’ve downloaded the PDF to my phone and now keep a dime in my tackle box thanks to your tips. Do you have similar videos or guides for other common fish like bass and catfish?
I am very sorry about your back.. I've had a back operation... so I know what you're dealing with
