    Beginner art-canvas painting here. But lots of experience with repurposing items, furniture, paint techniques.
    With masking tutorial I thought of a couple tricks of the trade that I learned when masking that might help everyone:
    1) After laying down tape, rub your nail, or a credit card along all edges of the tape. This pushes it down tight, and seals adhesive on the edge better. Not as much bleeding of paint underneath the tape.
    If the surface underneath is textured, it will leak under, no matter what. Some brush a small amount of clear varnish/gel medium (matte is probably best) over the edges first and let dry. If that leaks under, it is clear, and seals the tape. Let dry. Then follow with your 1-2 coats of color. Extra step, but crisp lines in the end.
    2) Taking tape off. Yes, I take off when just barely dry to the touch. Sometimes if you wait too long, and have several coats on top before you pull it off, there is a flexible rubbery property to acrylic/latex paint. As you pull it off, the tape pulls off the edges in sheets. If you wait too long, and paint is dry, score the edge of the tape with a straight edge and utility knife before pulling tape off. Then remove tape.
    Also, I found that you get a cleaner edge if once you get a bit of tape loose, you pull tape back over itself, in a tight "V" direction. This pulling only disengages the tape at the point of the "V" and you get no sides pulled up with the tape. Again, a cleaner edge, no tugging of paint along the sides, just that single point, etc.
    These may not pertain as much to canvas and art paper painting, but artists who may occasionally paint on wood, or do wall murals, this definitely applies.
    The clear coat on the tape before painting is an extra step, but so worth it for great results. On canvas, paper, wood, or walls.
    Good luck everyone!

    You really should advise that wet on wet one-it isn't archival if you use too much water. Over time, it will not last, no matter how good the paint. The paint needs its binder.

    • @JenniferFunnellArt
      @JenniferFunnellArt  4 года назад +4

      Too much water isn't good, you're right. I know Liquitex has their suggestions on their website as to how much water you can add before switching to a medium instead, as you mentioned the paint needs enough binder.

      @@JenniferFunnellArt Hello, I would first like to say that I really enjoyed your video...it was very helpful. I really like your teaching style, so I subscribed to your channel and will be returning to learn as much from you as I can! I am a novice for sure...I took one painting class about 10 years ago and have only dabbled here and there over the years. One thing I remember...is my teacher telling me to seal my paintings with a spray sealant to protect and preserve them better. If you did an extremely watered down technique, to mimic watercolors...would spraying a sealant over it when you're done, help it to be archival or would it still degrade over time?
      I really like the look of this technique, but I would be disappointed if a painting was ruined down the line because of degradation.

    • @JenniferFunnellArt
      @JenniferFunnellArt  4 года назад +3

      You can use sketch paper as well, but I think with acrylic - the thicker the paper, the better. But acrylic can even hold up on printer paper, you may find the paper bends, folds or wrinkles a bit if it is thinner. Hope this helps!!

    • @Vermontist1

      I would recommend experimenting with that to see whether it suits your purpose. I do wonder whether sculpting paste will have the adhesive quality you might need to have it work like modeling paste. But as I said, experiment and have fun!
