This was hard for me to watch because it hits so close to home. I am HH. I wear hearing aids, but I haven't always. My hearing gets worse as I age and one of my audiologists told me that brains over 35 start to process sound differently as well. So I went from being a little HH and not needing hearing aids to being pretty well deaf without them. I also never learned sign as a child and while I've picked up a little here and there - I've found it useless for anything but talking with a deaf friend of mine. Hearing people just don't know it.
Summed up, I can relate to isolating myself and being really tired of trying to teach people that I'm not broken, I just don't hear very well. I also feel like I'm between worlds, not deaf, not hearing. It's really frustrating sometimes. But you are so right. I have to pick myself up and deal with it instead of staying isolated. It's my choice, right?

Girl you are NOT ALONE! I am still facing challenges but when I wake up every morning I have to remind myself that things are not going to change over night.
Like you I to have lost more and more of my hearing over time and at the first time someone told me that it was very hard. Because I didn't have any Deaf support or access to the Deaf community that I was suppose to have. We should of had it, but we didn't. So now we have to be the ones who advocate for the younger generation so they don't have to experience this.
Truth be told it is hard, and at times it gets exhausting! But every time you teach someone something new, or every time you talk about your experiences to someone it helps... It just doesn't seem like it because the change is too small to be seen at the moment and like I mentioned, things don't change over night. I wish they did but I understand now that things take time. Most importantly remember that you are not alone and we are in this together :)

I promise you there are hearing people out there who want to learn. And our deaf friends and family are our best resource to do that.
I get so frustrated because I want to be able to talk to my friend in BSL. I want to understand everything right now. But it takes time and right now my sign vocabulary is pretty poor. I think I’m doing good and get something across in sign. Then she replies and I’m like “Nope, Sorry I don’t get it” we resort to texting most of the time but I don’t like it. I want to sign.

I felt this way before too because I started losing my hearing when I was 13 and now I'm 18 and completely deaf, but when my hearing was starting to drastically drop I was in choir and I felt really self-conscious and wanted to be alone but didn't want to be alone and then I learned ASL through my HS because I didn't have access to ASL other than that and my teacher was really helpful and made me feel full again and was great and now she's still my friend and like my second mom because my family sucks and won't learn ASL and I'm always excluded and I didn't get accommodations until now and I'm a freshman in college.

Yes! This applies to almost every disability btw. I'm not Deaf or Hard of Hearing, but I could totally relate to nearly everything you just said.

Snapple and Cats Totally! I tried to make this video apply to everyone with disabilities because, but it ended mentioning more about Deaf/HOH. I'm so glad you caught that though :)

This is a great video! You're so right about needing to explain and reexplain over and over again before someone gets it. It's worth it though.

I reached a few points in my life where I just got tired of reminding people that I was deaf and had to re-educate them about how to communicate with me. I suppose because I got so fed up I became more jaded when interacting with others because the way I saw it. If a person wasn't going to put in the same effort to communicate with me as much as I did. Then they weren't worth getting to know.
I believe what makes it worse is when you have to do this with people that you feel are important to have in your life. Reaching that point with someone you're close to makes the relationship feel much more complicated than it needs to be.
Also before I forget I wanted to say thank you Jessica Flores. Because of your advice I managed to contact the IDHS and I'm in the process of getting hearing that will help make things a bit easier for me. It's a long process and I have to be patient. But for that I can't thank you enough.

      Will do!
Right now I'm putting in the work to learn about deaf culture, the deaf community, and learn ASL. Now I am planning to take ASL classes but I'm trying to work things out at my job so I can get the free time and work schedule to do so.
At this point I'm even considering take a break from work entirely and focus more on learning ASL and attending deaf events to meet other people like me. But I worry about how that would eliminate the financial stability that I've worked so hard to build and remove my chances of living independently from my family because they worry about me and don't want me to live on my own.
But if you ever need help with a piece or brainstorming potential topics for a future video. I would like to repay you or the help you've already given me.
So please feel free to let me know.

Hey Jessica, if you're up for it, I would love to see a video talking about how the confirmation of Betsy Devos will affect Deaf/HoH students and maybe how people can advocate for these students. A lot of people don't know that most Deaf/HoH students are served by IDEA. I have been frustrated by the events of the last few weeks as well.
Thanks again for another great video!

LaLaLaura This is a good idea. It would be good to do a video to help teach people how advocate the students. I'm going to look into it :)

I at one point had to tell my hearing health teacher to face me when she is talking so I could read her lips and she rolled her eyes and got mad that she had to repeat herself if I didn't understand what she was saying and at that point I stopped telling my teachers my classmates and whoever else in my school anything about my hearing loss even though it was very very mild I still wasn't keeping up and it upsets me when I talk bc I was born hearing and I speak so well so people assume I can hear fine which such
