In this video guitar lesson series I will show you how to play “Patience” by Guns N’ Roses in it’s entirety.
Released on their Lies EP, “Patience” went on to top the charts in with what was a surprising acoustic departure for the band.
This lesson series will be in two parts. In the first video lesson I will demonstrate how to play all of the chords and progressions as well as the intro guitar solo.
Since there are many acoustic guitars being played at the same time on the original recording, I am teaching a condensed version of the chords and chord progressions. In other words, I am sorta picking the best or most important parts and putting them into a part that can be played with just one guitar and still sound close to the original recording.
In the second video lesson I will teach you note-for-note how Slash plays his highly melodic guitar solo. Slash has two solos in this song and the first solo will be taught in the first video lesson.
I think this lesson will be a nice challenge for the intermediate guitarist. It uses mostly basic chords, but there is a lot of melody work being played within those chords that you will need to play in order to make the song sound correct. It will probably take a little bit of practice to be able to confidently have those melody notes come out over the chords.
The main solo is also a nice challenge, especially the second half of it where Slash employs many large bends in very low positions of the fretboard. Doing these bends on an acoustic guitar can be very difficult.
Alright that is about it from me. Enjoy the lessons!
Carl…
i dont understand why someone would dislike this? this is amazing
All the dislikes are from Izzy stradlin and slash. They don't like Carl showing their secrets. It's like Bruce Lee when he was teaching Kung Fu to a bunch of white boys in the 60's. Thanks for sharing Carl.
Was it Marty? Lol
@@Treetopflyer777 Haha, that what I was about to comment
You actually have a lesson for every song I wanna learn 😅😅
I’m so thankful for this guy lol best instructor
so, I was sitting in my living room for like 5 hours writing what you said in chords and tablatures, (while I was playing it on my guitar obviously, curious fact: writing it helped me to learn everything faster) so I sacrificed my low back and bed time (its 5:45a.m. where i live), but I can finally say I know how to play this song so it was all worth it, big thank you
this is so good! your lesson has inspired me again. haven't picked up my guitar for months...spent 3 hours practicing it, sore finger tips again..lol
I first visited this video about 2 years ago when I first picked up guitar and I remember struggling for hours to get the timing of the notes/ pull offs down while strumming the chords and I eventually made it as far as I could and gave up. Something inspired me tonight to try this song again and I picked it up almost immediately, so to all you new guitar players keep going, I still am not a great guitar player but the stuff that seems impossible in the beginning shouldn’t scare you away
I've played this song for years, but without all the little fills and nuances you teach in this lesson (largely because I didn't know how to play them). I've since incorporated some into my own playing, which makes the song sound more full. Thank you!
7 years ago I learnt this here..now I'm back to appreciate this legend
The real patience is required to learn the chord intro
Yes to that lok
😭😭😭😭😭 bro no way me too
Just came across this. It's infinitely better than the usual straight chords most videos use. Will be sitting down with this to work it all out.
Whenever marty cant do the proper instructions, i come here bc i know carl can
Story of my life !

Nice job copying three comments.
@@kingduncan323 my thoughts exactly...
Best explanation and demonstration on this song I found on the net! Thanks!
Hi carl been going over this lesson and prt 2 to try and nail it because its one of my many favourite songs I adore, at the part where it goes quiet and slowly progresses d with f# in base and so on isn't there a small riff / outro solo only if so pls could you add it on lesson1 or 2 I would be extremely grateful if I am wrong then I apologise and I want to make clear that i don't mean anything negative towards these lessons as they are fantastic and people like you make it possible for the likes of me to learn with a passion thank you .
What about the walkdown in the verse from C to G? Is that only the bass guitar or is there a bit of a walkdown in the acoustic guitar arpeggios as well? You say it's the same chords but more subdued, which I understand but I feel like there's a very obvious walkdown that isn't being addressed.. Am I wrong?
Dude this guy knows. Carl is one of the best on RUclips
Thanks Carl for the great cover/lesson!
Any advice please on what gauge strings to have on the guitar for the bends in Slash‘ main solo?
Really hard to bend so low down the neck on the acoustic…
Thank you for this video. You are a great teacher and a great player...
@Leah Sero put a capo on your guitar on first fret and tune it at normal tune then take off the capo
Fantastic tip! Never thought of doing that.
A lesson on estranged by gnr would be pritty cool you should a lesson on that song. :)
Ben Kerr That one is most likely on the way very soon. :)

GuitarLessons365Song Hey carl could you do nightrain? Most people teach the outro solo wrong.
Rorschachxx1985 If you're good with learning things by watching people play search in nightrain niko slash cover. You can kind of watch how he plays the outro then use youtube's slo-mo thing for the faster parts. That's how I learnt it. It takes longer but niko slash is the only guy I know who has got it completely perfect note for note :)
That is legit my favorite of all times song of GNR since i was a kid I'd love to learn it
Thanks Carl, this is a good one.
This is so good! Thanks for taking teaching❤! Can you do more on Duff bass lines on his guitar in this song (Patience)?
Hey dude, thanks much, pretty cool and useful. One question though, what's the name/brand of your acoustic guitar? Can't zoom it in, sounds pretty cool...
I love this song so much
Lile a boss. As always.
Absolutely love learning from your videos
Awesome attention to detail
You're the best fella
Excellent lesson, thank you so much and congratulations
Good lesson mate, but I would personally recommend for down tuned songs just don't bother de-tuning, it's an extra step we don't need and it seems superflous for just two acoustic guitars!
Thank's buddy!!
Thanks 🙏
Thank you so much for this excellent video
Great lesson Carl 👍
I don't always listen to G&R but when I do so does the neighborhood
my opinion about bands that don't want their music taught..is it should not be so...a real musician knows that...it some way shape or form....we as humans need music....it's a scientific fact
rather it's a person that has to be able to hear a song...or a person where listening to a song is not enough they have to be able to play it!!...either way know matter song
..no matter how popular the band that created the song...the song should be put out there for those to Learn...as much as it is for those to listen...MUSIC IS FOR ALL OF LEAST ONE THING EVERYONE AGREES WITH...WE NEED IT!!!!!!!
Bro your straight shred
You forgot the whistle
Awesome video! loved it!
Great lesson, thanks, I could never get it quite right on my own
Will you doing a whistling lesson on pt.2 also?

Thank you very much. Man you rock
At 1:22 how do I tune my strings down a half step, please. "Newbie" ;-)
(Do I need to start with something simpler? lol)
played in Eb....I'm not tuning my damn guitar damn you axl
I tune my guitar everytime for whatever song I want to play lol
literally just put the capo on the 1st fret and tune it to standard
@@ditsydaisys lol that just takes more energy 🤣

very good lesson.... whats the guitar model,
Can someone please tell me how anyone could thumbs down his lesson ,.. I thought he did an awesome job teaching this . Heck can you do better ???
Hi Carl what is tuning down a half step ? went to some other videos regarding this,,they asked to get capo on 1st fret and do standard tuning but that doesnt concur with what you said?
the capo thing is for lazy pepole. just download to phone a chromatic tuner abd tune to eb ab db gb bb eb
Thanks for sharing buddy!
Just perfect 👌
What is the make of the guitar you are using
what is the strumming pattern for patience
Nice work!
Awesome, thanks!
Please somebody tell me the tabs of the part played behind last chords after the solo
Thank you for the lesson. I’m grateful. But I really wish I could learn to play solo in tempo.
4:30... Thats where he teaches the solo, thank me later
Thx man
Daan Stoeltie he fails to
Learn the rest of the song it’s good for ya
GuitarLessons365Song In what tone is the guitar tuned, is it a low tone ... or how?
E flat tune. half step down on all strings
What about rocket queen
Good guy carl!!
Anyone know how many times you play each part before switching
Just got some daddario 9s not afraid to bend strings anymore!
Raghav Garg Don't buy those! You're destroying the sound of your acoustic guitar! Buy atleast 11s and practice bending with those. Tuning half a step down may help you too!
Please somebody tell me the tabs of the part played behind last chords after the solo
