The lucifer effect: Why good people turn bad?

- Have you ever wondered why some people can do shockingly evil things. Are they bad by nature? Could it be that good people don't turn evil?
Renowned social psychologist and creator of the "Stanford Prison Experiment," Philip Zimbardo explores the mechanisms that make good people do bad things, how moral people can be seduced into acting immorally, and what this says about the line separating good from evil.
His studies on why good people turn bad has spanned over four decades and spawned a theory called the Lucifer Effect. So what is the Lucifer effect? Let's find out.

Hello brother
as Johnny Depp once said: power doesn't change people, it reveals them.
As long as they are already formed.
True
That's the real truth.
Actually it was money he quote. And the quote was from his friend when they were talking about how people change when they get rich. Still it doesn't change much meaning of the quote if we change power to money and vice versa
Oops
I believe that some people go from good to bad as a result of being used a number of times to the point where they can't take it anymore, going unappreciated for their hard work or sacrifices, and overall retaliating towards one who has done him or her wrong or towards one whose done harm to that person's closest friends/family. I agree that constant rejection drives some people towards immorality as well.
I see this happening right before me with a friend 😢

I agree with the rejection part. In fact, I see it happening with myself. I used to be a "good boy" who was quite a pushover, and I really hated myself for it because everyone took advantage of me for it. Now I lie, steal, and cheat because it's one of the only ways I have of feeling in control.

"The line between good and evil lies at the center of every human heart." I agree with this quote. Our actions, our Art, our choices are related to our viewpoint on that line between good and evil. Our core beliefs define us, and it shows through our work.
I think it comes down to the people you surround yourself with or what environment you're exposed to, if you're a good person being that good person to people who do bad thing's or may not be good to you, you'll eventually get tired, exhausted and your good heart starts darkening because of the bad others do to you.
This happened to me and I'm still recovering from it.
People prey on the weak, kind and generous. At a certain point if a person isn't treated with enough love and respect they will 180.
This is reason why people with depression need to get out of it as soon as possible.
Being depressed isn't bad/evil ,but if you keep being depressed for a long time ,you slowly start to change...
After you start changing some people starts avoiding you ,some starts to ask ''What's wrong ?'' ,but depressed person doesn't see neither of them.
This cycle of slow madness will continue until you get ''To the bottom''.
At the bottom you have 2 options - realize something is wrong (good option) or turn 180° and become insane (bad option).
Depression is imo the WORST illnes you can ever get ,because you don't even realize it. And when you do realize it you are depressed ,you don't know where to find help. I've been through this and it's really not fun.

And now it has changed, I realize it because people don't recognize me anymore. I didn't turn into evil not at all I just don't try to be good anymore and one interesting thing is that it doesn't bother me at all, this is why people don't recognize me anymore, not because of bad or good but because I don't react anymore. The thing that has changed is my relation to evil. Evil doesn't bother me anymore I can know watch people killing themselves and I don't care. @@eclipze999 that's usually cause there helped along the way before they get to that point.
It's simple actually:
Good people do good things because they expect things to be good for them afterwards or they do it because things are or were already good for them. Good is like relationships, it doesn't work if both giver and receiver aren't winning.
But if you do good things without good things ever happening to you; you start to lose sense of what is good and will often feel obligated to do good things instead of being fullfiled to do so.
At your breaking point, good no longer means anything and you'll just try to do what you can to keep yourself whole, but when you can no longer keep yourself whole, you'll give up and become the personification of evil in order to survive or if you manage to reach the good that still exists within you before breaking, you will just kill yourself as a means to save the world from what you'd become.
TL;DR People, no matter how strong willed or virtuous, always have a breaking point. Some higher, some lower. It doesn't matter, we eventually break. And when we do, all the sadness and fear becomes hate and intolerance. If we lived in a world were people were always happy or never too sad, evil wouldn't exist. After alll, hate comes from sadness.

Luckily for me I’ve never felt the influence of peer pressure. I’m a vegetarian, I’ve never done drugs, and yes that means I’ve never drank alcohol. These character traits are all looked down on, yet I keep being myself. I think that some people are malleable to group influence, but not good people, if you’re easily influenced by a group then you’ve been corrupted from childhood. The real reason why good people turn bad is that they wake up to reality, there are people out there that want to hurt us, take from us, and manipulate us. Recoiling from the pain of having one of these things happen will eventually lead to moral sacrifices for the purpose of self preservation.
I don't think using or not using mind-state altering substances without context can be good or bad(in the general sense how "good/bad is judged). If they cause you to do bad choices/actions towards other people, then it's bad. But otherwise not. Whether you decide to deteriorate your own health by unhealthy substances is largely your own business.

Because your very definition of good is flawed. What you call as good is simply to be pure, to be ignorant of true fear and of suffering, because only then does your animalistic side awaken. If you throw dirt on a blank canvas, well then it will quickly become dirty. True goodness is like a purifier, meaning it isnt about purity and impurity itself, but more so to purify the pollution. Good people bring light to the places they go, rather than being light themselves.
i much prefer this type of explanation, thank you
Awesome!
wow, you perhaps have reached ilumination?
Good people are ignorant because they are ignorant of fear and suffering? And the reason they aren't bad is because their animalistic side doesn't awake because of their ignorance? You're speaking from a weird point of view, you think that people are one in the same, when it comes to morality anyway, the only difference is, good people are ignorant of suffering and fear. I disagree with this, people are different on the morality spectrum, most good people aren't ignorant of suffering or fear at all, what makes a good person s good person is being good in the face of fear and ignorance, they aren't ignorant, they are strong and brave.
never had thought that way... interesting
I think the real question is: what makes a “good” and “bad” person. I believe each person has their own definition of good and bad depending on their context.
I agree with this. You are always the villain in someone’s story even if you’re a “good person.” We’ve all done things we regret to friends family or even strangers and that moment or action can become how they will always remember us

The worst people throughout history always viewed themselves as the hero/good guy. That is why good and evil are tricky terms to weigh stuff against. What is good to one person may be considered evil to another and the reasons as for why as colorful and vivid as the stars in night sky. Each person on an individual level have their own ideas of right and wrong, this goes beyond religion and politics. And then there are massive swaths of people who have overlapping and shared views on good and evil in the many groups through out the world. This topic is so vivid that we would not be able to color it with all the colors we could make.
if you commit a bad deed, it means in your heart you didn't know it was a bad deed... just understanding is not enough to turn an evil person good; such person needs to innerstand that what they've done is wrong
Being evil stems from lack, insecurity, low self worth, pride, ignorance, and self hate. You cant love yourself and be cruel to others. We are all one. Always love and never Hate. Love comes more natural to the human heart than its opposite.

Most People dont know the difference between naive and good and its easy to not see the differnce, but i am very expiernced in this topic, being evil and selfish is the only conclusion if you truly see the full picture of the world and people in general, in my eyes
Not everyone deserves to die, the same goes for the opposite not everyone deserves to life, thats what i truly belive, being the one who does the dirty work would seem as an honor for me, but i will never get close to that power in my current position, its truly disgusting playing an role that will never benefit me, but this is probably life all about or its more that society wants u to belive and behave that way... no!
I have become very evil in my thinking, disregarding life for small reasons, but its seems enough for me since i cant let anyone dare to touch me and my world, but what about other people? Will I make them to belive my crap if i cant would i want to kill them? Yes, I would if I could, this alone shows what kind of monster I am, this has nothing to do with ration thinking or anything else, its pure ignorance, but this ignorance can make people obey and fear me even if its bad, it serves his purpose and my ambition, to be the best
You can see I am aware of my behaviour, but i am still going, because i know that there is no other way, depending on kindness on others? I did that since i was a child, but what did it bring me?
Fear and humiliation, that made me angry and that lead to hate and that hate brought me suffering and destroyed my former self who couldnt handle any of these emotion... no one helped me even if i would not have allowed to help me, isnt it strange that I was still able to make only, because i turned this way`???
If God exists he should truly end me already, for my own and others sake.... but there is no mercy so the answer is there, i was always told that life isnt fair, that life doesnt give a shit, people doesnt give a shit
being good never served me in any way, my family was never able to help me with all of this.... i really needed help back then, but now.... now i have no weaknesses anymore, i will kill everyone who dares to oppose me if i ever get the chance

Its alot of factors that play into why i went from good to bad. I cant just say one single event made me say fuck it im going bad but i can say it all started with basketball. I literally loved basketball to the point I practiced every day from sun up to sundown, attended basketball summer camps where you literally eat shit and breath basketball and i was very talented but for some reason my highschool coach would not put me on the team. I even had other highschool coaches trying to recruit me to play for them but my mom told me I can’t run from my problems so every year I continued to practice and practice and still never made the team and I could never figure out why, but that right there taught me hard work and dedication dont get you nowhere and that’s how its been for me my whole life. No matter how hard i try I don’t get what i want unless i take it or take the easy way out. I started to feel like why do i have to watch everyone else shine when is it ever going to be my turn. Everyone else who did wrong had all the money, cars and women but good ole me i just gotta keep my head down and keep pushing and maybe just maybe one day ill get there. Man fuck that.
I understand, sometimes you don't fit, maybe aren't liked for some reason by powerful people in your life, whatever the reason you're sidelined, eventually you learn the successful often bully their way to the top because fear motivates people like nothing else. People do not reward goodness, they reward ruthlessness. There's a reason felons have 30% more kids than non-felons, even women who say they want good men... that isn't whom they sexually reward. The incentive to be bad is everywhere and without people to guide you and reward you for the seven heavenly virtues, the seven heavenly virtues become like baggage..
Good luck, my friend.
Others just haven't the same POV as yourself. Don't expect them to understand. You are the hero of your story. Even if others see you as villain.

I used to run a group of friends back in middle school. They whispered a lot of opinions on 1 specific male student to make me isolate him. I talked to him, say how he should change from being a street dirt mama boy to a more looking fit style. He neglected the idea. I told him that was how this enviroment work and if he wanted to be up to the standard you need to change, start with doing your hair. He denied. I was dissapointed. Not just the sociopolitical and daily interctions, theres so much influence on us from the time we were concived to the time we r just infants... i read about this prison thing they studied where a portion of the criminals had a slight deformity or a few connections here and there that lead to the behaviour that is considered a crime, how do u provide justice to that person, and how do u separate the mind from the person.(ps: the book has the answer in the end but im still in the process, will take me sometime to update this comoment)

(Example)So... why does that guy have to be such an A hole? or maybe.... how did I turn out to be such a nice guy? what made me such a nice guy... was my upbringing and the learning experiences that involved to have made me that way.... SOME people actually didn't get that when THEY were young. . . and THAT is something for you to consider the next time you feel such great joy when you see the next bad guy thrown into prison for the rest of their lives. but what makes you any different than him? because only YOU and YOUR infinite idealism and knowledge of "Righteousness" just knows whats better?
Now... this isn't exactly a mutual/universal thing. SOME people are actually just BORN straight up evil... and so there is no remedying a soul like that. but for OTHERS its more like a learning experience. don't just judge as if you always KNEW what the truth was... but instead. . It’s as much your fault as it is the fault of societal pressure. Every bad deed you have done in the name of society was already something you were willing to do in the first place, just not in any other situation. Everyone is inherently evil if they are put in any kind of situation that would make them so. ‘’It only takes one bad day to make the sanest mane go mad”. That’s just human nature. An evil act is just a willingness to better our lives how we see fit.
@Tribute Doll because you still care about the outcome and think about the harm you could do to others. When you don't care no more, you mop away people out of the way. I prefer genuine good people, being good all the time though for everything can make you less valuable/more soft.
This is the nature vs nurture debate that has been going on for centuries. I still believe we are a byproduct of the environment we are raised in though. Compare a poor family in the Philippines to a middle class family in the US. A middle class child would feel horrible living in a third world country, while the poor family has no idea that they’re living in a third world country because that is all they’ve known their entire lives. This example doesn’t really relate to the subject of this video, but it’s just further reasoning that explains why humans are born a blank slate, not inherently good or evil- but the conditions that you are raised in determine the beliefs you form along with your entire concept or right and wrong
@Tribute Doll There are people that are hardly influenced by groups or others. Maybe you are one of those ? I can only speak for myself, but i get very rarely convinced by trends, media or even my friends. I am someone who can be very agressive and i can seek vengeance, but i rarely do. I am more of an individualist probably. I am in no groups and i do not participate in social media(IG,FB,SNAP, or anything like that. DO i have them ? yes, but i do not use them). I would say, that it is partly in my childhood, because i was taught to think that way. From my experience i can do very bad things, but only, if i think it is necessary to save someone or protect someone or if i find it the right thing to do at the time, but i think that people including myself can do stupid/bad things from selfishness too/social pressure(even tho as i said i do not know, what it feels like to have social pressure, because i frankly do not care about trends, media, or what others think about me.)
To clarify I’m not saying that you aren’t a product of your environment, I’m saying that you are as much a byproduct of your thoughts and feelings as you are a byproduct of your environment. Let’s say you are put in a situation where you must murder someone to survive. Most people are taught that murder is bad, their environment has shaped them to dislike killing. Your survival instinct tells you to kill in order to survive. If you kill the person, then you have done something bad, but that thing was something that you were already willing to do no matter what your environment was like. Is this making sense? I’m really bad at explaining so tell me if it doesn’t make sense.
