I am a professional horn player currently in my final two months of this stuff. I totally agree with everything in this video and am currently feeling your pain you felt when you were in treatment. Thank you so much for bringing awareness to this. This video means a lot to me right now, thanks Jon!

Spencer!!! Thank you for your support and I'm so glad you found this video resonated with you. I agree that people should be more aware of these struggles *especially* since so many people take these medications these days! Hold on - you'll get through this and come out even stronger. ❤️

Thanks for this video Jon. Watching this and messaging you helped me decide to go on Accutane. I just finished my second round, and was on treatment nearly all of my sophomore and junior years at Juilliard. My skin is so much better. I think something to remember is this drug effects everyone differently. I made sure to apply chapstick and sunscreen religiously. Personally, I had no noticeable side effects. The nice thing is that if you react badly to it, just stop the drug. Wishing everyone thinking about trying Accutane the best.

Good video Jon, your skin looks great by the way. I have to say though, it had the reverse affect on my playing. I started on Roaccutane whilst trying to get my range up to, and beyond, double C. I honestly had no issues and eventually got there.
I had to go through 3 courses of the drug over the years and I think the excitement of my acne finally going helped.
Everyone’s different and I wish all the new trumpet players the very best in their quest.

Not on accutane nor do I play the trumpet. Great video though very informative

Great video Jon! I feel like a lot of people will be able to get use out of this video - it's one of those things you don't really consider would affect your playing but totally does! I can relate as someone who has had to deal with eczema - making sure I really take care of myself and my skin has had a very big impact on my trumpet playing!

Thanks, Kevin! Really glad you enjoyed it. I'm glad you think people will find this video useful - when I was writing and planning it, I kept asking myself "is this something people are going to identify with or is it too niche?" but after posting I am seeing how many people really needed to hear this information and encouragement!

Jon, this video is great. I took this medicine in high school and feel like it did permanent damage to my playing. I’m still super sensitive to sun on my face, and there’s a general weakness to what my upper lip can take before it tears open. I’ve managed a great professional career despite the challenges, but it’s important to warn people what this drug can really do. I’ll probably make my own video about my experience. Loved all your suggestions for what students can do instead of practicing while on the medicine.
    Keep up the great work!

I took accutane back in HS (junior year, I think). I can especially remember some cold marching band rehearsals and football games, and a particularly cold and dry HS area audition that I folded on. Fortunately, I only experience about as much acne as you claim to now.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Nathan... it can be a really tough time while on the medication but like you indicated, it does seem to be very effective at reducing acne in the long term.

I’ve found that using even topical tretinoin as an anti aging treatment, it absolutely plummets my playing. Not because of dry lips, or any discomfort around d the mouth, but a weird mystery sense of severely lacking stamina and range. Despite playing at least an hour a day. Beware of tretinoin and trumpet playing. Even the cream just for the face.

Other medicine do have these side effects as well. What helped me was : lanolin ! It made a difference on my lips! The dry mouth is more difficult to solve.

I used to have a major acne problem. No medicine did much of anything to help. I became desperate and decided to try coffee enemas. My acne vanished within two weeks. True story.

    Hey
I really enjoyed your video. I took this medication for 9 months maybe even longer, I lost a lot of confidence in my playing, feeling unimpressed after 9 years of trumpet playing. I feel like it did permanent damage, but this can be caused due to my lack of confidence. Do you or anyone else in the comment section know a way to recover if there even is a way?

I'm principal horn of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra. I had normal minor acne as a teenager, but since I moved to Hawaii, I've had major cystic acne problems. I tried all the topical treatments, and eventually considered Accutane. In the end, I stared taking birth control instead. (Mostly because the acne appeared in line with my hormonal cycle). Sorry men, not really an option for you. 😅 The birth control works, but I do wonder how the added hormones mess with my mental game and confidence. 😬

Thanks for sharing, Anna! So many people have issues with acne at different times in their lives, and we all find different ways of managing it. I can imagine Hawaii causing worse flair ups with the very humid weather (and salty sea air?). The effects of various daily medications on playing is a pretty deep subject that probably needs more attention...
