  • Feeding wild parrots at O'Reilly's at Lamington National Park is so awesome! It was so much fun having so many birds land on our feeding tray, arms, and even heads. Crimson Rosellas, King Parrots, and Lorikeets all come to eat. Each of the kids describe how bad the birds claws hurt as they land on their bare skin. Still, it is a magical moment as we all are surrounded by these absolutely beautiful birds all native to Australia.
As we drive to the park, it is so exciting to see a few wallabies, the first our whole family has seen here in Australia. They are just as curious about us as we are of them. The drive is beautiful and the big trees growing right along the road remind us of the big redwood trees from California. This is part one of three videos that we will produce from O'Reilly's. Next up...Tree Top Walk!

Boiling the Billy usually means to make or boil tea leaves in water in a Billy can, like a tin pot with a handle. Like if you are out camping, wish to make tea.

If you want to know more about Bernard O'Reilly you should read his book " Green Mountains". There were actually 3 survivors of the crash. John Proud had a broken leg and Joseph Binstead stayed with him while James Westray went to try to find help. Westray died before finding anyone. Apparently he had quite severe burns. Bernard found him sitting on a rock next to a creek.
Westray was buried near to where he was found. You can hike to his grave but its not an easy hike. Not far from O'Reilly's there is town called Beaudesert that has a small museum. They have many artifacts from the crash.

One of Australia's most beautiful areas. Lot's to see and enjoy. I met Bernard and he signed my copy of his book "Green Mountains". I have been there many times. I was there exactly 49 years ago, on honeymoon with my first husband, we loved O'Reilly's so much.

We used to go there all the time as kids - the feeding area used to have a treehouse for kids to play in and feed them from, but it's still pretty magical. Other than that, and the fact they are discouraging bird feeding, not a lot has changed in 30 years! Still a magical place, so glad you got to experience it!

So glad your kids got to experience this. Me and my siblings did the same thing when we went on holiday to Queensland's Gold coast. That was in the 1960s and I have never forgotten it. i was scared too, but still entranced. Memories like this last a lifetime.
