  • We saw and heard a Kookaburra. They are famous birds only found in Australia and they have one of the craziest calls we have ever heard. They sound like a laughing child or a braying donkey. They are really cool and funny!
We loved discovering the biking trails, boardwalks, and parks nearby our house. It is such a beautiful area by the beach and along the forest and swampy areas.
We also saw some flying foxes, which are these megabats that are so cool and huge!
We enjoyed going to church and connecting with the members of our church who have been so kind.
The next day, Mom and the boys enjoyed going to a movie for the first time in a really long time. Afterward, they went to enjoy Hungry Jacks, which is like an Australian Burger King.

They used to use kookaburra noises as monkey noises in older movies (Indiana Jones for example) so it’s ironic that little miss would say they sound like monkeys.

Yep, no plastic utensils here. They are banned. Everything is bamboo, or some eco material. Takes a while to get used to it. The same goes for straws, single use bags, plates etc. All banned to stop plastic pollution :)

It does take some getting used to, but worth the efforts for our planet. ❤️

Pronounced - cook-uhh-burruh. The name kookaburra is derived from the Wiradjuri language - guuguubarra - a word that phonetically imitates the sound the kookaburra makes. The Wiradjuri are indigenous/first nations people from eastern NSW.

Burger King tried to use that name here in australia, but a company already had it, so they had to change the name, and they chose Hungry Jacks. It is basically Burger King however, just with an aussie feel.

kookaburras are monogamous and mate for life, so when you hear them "laughing" at each other it's usually husband & wife lol. They can live for about 20 years in the wild. I think the bat was a fruit bat (especially as youre in QLD), their wingspan is massive

Your family is really lovely. I watched their interaction with the kangaroos and I was impress by how respectful they were of the animals. I hope you continue to enjoy your time in Australia. Apparently, lots of American tourist think the Kookaburra call is that of monkeys. Kookaburras are members of the kingfisher family.

What a cool family, I just love how you all get along so well, a real inspiration for other families to aspire to. Just a fun fact, Hungry Jacks is pretty much Burger King except the name couldn't be used here because it had already been trademarked. I think Hungry Jacks was named after the person that franchised here, Jack Cowan, but I might be wrong. He also brought KFC to Australia as well.

Thanks for your sharing your family fun. You did hear a laughing kookaburra. There is another specie - Blue Winged Kookaburra whose call sounds like someone choking while gargling water. Quite a crazy sound. Greetings from FNQueensland.

Glad you loved them. When we were in America we saw a Bald Eagle Bird but it was in a zoo not flying around free.
The only thing we saw flying free were Seagull Birds and Pelican Birds.

I found Australia to be very safe. Walk anywhere and everywhere and you're fine. However, it comes at a cost; everywhere is expensive and the food are such small portion. Other than that, it's great.
